Kapalua Golf's Plantation Course Growing Closer To November Reopening

(Maui, Hawaii) – Work and grow-in continue on Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course ahead of the award-winning course’s scheduled reopening in November 2019. Home of the PGA TOUR’s Sentry Tournament of Champions and one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, the Plantation Course closed in February to undergo a multi-million dollar enhancement project aimed at refining and revitalizing the 28-year-old golf course. The project is being led by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw; Troon’s Design, Development and Agronomy team; as well as long-time Maui resident and Golf Channel personality Mark Rolfing.

As of mid-July, course shaping and the installation of irrigation equipment have been completed. All 107 acres have been grassed with Celebration bermudagrass, with 15 of the 18 fairways being mown daily. All 18 greens are growing-in with TifEagle bermudagrass and are also being cut daily. A capillary concrete liner system has been installed in all 92 course bunkers, allowing the bunkers to better weather heavy rain events. Sand has been added and spread into bunkers on 14 of the 18 holes. The Plantation Course’s practice green and chipping green areas have also been rebuilt and TifEagle bermudagrass is currently growing-in. The practice range tee area has been laser leveled and was recently sprigged with Celebration bermudagrass. Crews are now installing new concrete cart paths throughout the course.

In addition to on-course work, the Plantation Course golf shop closed on July 29th for clubhouse enhancements and the Plantation House Restaurant (also located in the Plantation Course clubhouse) will be open for dinner service only through the end of August. On August 31st, the Plantation House Restaurant and clubhouse will close for refinements. The entire Plantation Course clubhouse, including the golf shop and restaurant, will reopen in November 2019.

“We’re excited by the progress and about the enhancements on the Plantation Course,” said Alex Nakajima, general manager, Kapalua Golf & Tennis. “We remain on schedule for a soft opening of the golf course in November, with the course in pristine condition by The Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.”
