Nike Golf Finds Inspiration in Action Sports for the New Swingtip Footwear

Nike Golf’s Lunar Swingtip shoe pays homage to the wingtip design

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - Nike Golf’s non-stop innovation is in full swing as its footwear team continues to thrive on inspiration from Nike Athletes. The most recent idea born from Nike Athlete input is the new men’s Nike Lunar Swingtip shoes that pay homage to the classic wingtip design.

A team of Nike Golf engineers and designers visited Nike affiliate, Hurley, for unique athlete inspiration from skateboarders and surfers who enjoy golf and can go low on the course. The engineers and designers utilized these insights as well as those already in the Nike Skateboarding line, to create a shoe that provides stability and comfort on and off the golf course.

“Nike Action Sports has a lot of skate and surf athletes who love golf and are low-handicap players,” said Lee Walker. “When they play, they want to look the part – to wear the ‘uniform’ of golf.  But at the same time they, better than most, can appreciate the stability afforded by a low-profile cupsole construction given the performance demands of their chosen sports.  Balance and stability are critical in board sports just as they are in golf.”

The traction pattern of the outsole was derived from a pressure mapping study Nike’s Sports Research Lab (NSRL) conducted on multiple categories of Nike Athletes. These findings directly influenced the stud configuration, geometry, and heights of the lugs, resulting in a design that offers traction on demand, when and where you need it.

The lugs engage with the ground throughout the swing, providing a secure grip with hidden traction. The rubber rim around the bottom of the shoe is weight activated, working with the movements of the foot to create increased stability while concealing the traction lugs below.

A full-length Nike Lunarlon sockliner delivers superior out-of-the-box comfort while providing ground feel and support. Walker stated, “Action Sports had been utilizing this execution of Lunarlon foam in their Skateboarding line. This inspired our team to incorporate a similar drop-in Lunarlon sockliner for comfort directly underfoot.”

Wingtip upper designs are available in multiple colors and material offerings, including:  Leather (1-year waterproof), Suede and Canvas.

AVAILABILITY: July 1, 2012
Leather (1 yr WP): MSRP: $150 – MAP/STREET: $119.99
Suede: MSRP: $140 – MAP/STREET: $109.99

Stretching for golf is critical to slowing down the rapid decline senior golfer's experience, as well as reducing the stress on the muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints. The golf swing puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the body, and unless you are participating in a consistent stretching for golf program, you will be a statistic. By using Golflexx, following our simple routine and using it in your daily work out regiment will help prevent injury and keep you in better shape to play golf.

Golflexx will help you from becoming one of the millions of golfers who aren't improving and who are injured at some point every season. The golf swing is dynamic. What that means is it involves motion. This motion needs to be fluid, tension-less, and powerful. One of the only ways to accomplish this is with a good stretching routine. What are you waiting for? Don't become one of those statistics.

A smooth, successful golf swing results from having good range of motion and flexibility in your swing path. As flexibility increases, your ability to have a complete backswing and extended follow-through improves. Most golfers have a tendency to be tight in the flexor and extensor muscles of the legs and hips, but flexible in the hips and trunk from constant swinging. Therefore, these flexors and extensors should be stretched regularly. Golflexx can help with these important muscle groups used in the golf swing. Remember, muscles and tissues tend to shorten over one's lifetime, but stretching and flexibility exercises using Golflexx have been proven to prevent and even reverse this condition. Golflexx is excellent for all ages. It's never too early or too late to start a good stretching routine.

Like Rickie, we believe the Special Edition Orange AMP Driver will be a huge hit and continue to build desirability for the COBRA brand.”

After launching the first white driver in November 2010 with the ZL, COBRA is now bringing the first monochromatic, color driver to the market. “It was a lot of fun working with the COBRA research and development team on this driver,” said Rickie Fowler. “We had a few rounds of samples until we found the right Sunday Orange color and then we decided to use the same shaft I play on Tour. It has been performing great in testing and has a cool new look and edge to it. I think fans will love it.”

The Special Edition Orange AMP Driver features E9 Face Technology with dual roll, Adjustable Flight Technology (AFT), and Advanced Material Placement. These technologies combine with a Titanium 6-4 head and a semi-forged, milled titanium face to deliver blistering balls speeds, explosive distance and customized performance. E9 Face Technology with dual roll utilizes an elliptical shape face that gives the Special Edition Orange AMP Driver a 30% larger Sweet Zone, resulting in more distance, accuracy and forgiveness in shots hit from the low heel to high toe; the canted bulge with dual roll provides added distance and accuracy to the shots hit above and below the centerline. AFT lets golfers easily set the face angle to Open, Neutral or Closed to optimize ball flight and Advanced Material Placement redistributes up to 15 grams of weight to maximize distance through optimized launch conditions.

The 10 Most Impressive College Golf Courses

Taconic Golf Club is home to Williams College

No other sport can boast such breathtaking playing areas as the game of golf. Beautiful courses carefully designed by master architects become once-in-a-lifetime destinations for visitors from all over the world. Though courses on the U.S. Open tour may spare no expense in order to keep the likes of Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson coming back, college courses have to do their best with often tighter budgets. Decent enough links can be found on campuses from coast to coast, but 10 schools in particular have courses so impressive, we have to tip our plaid cap to them.

1. Taconic Golf Club, Williams College:

Created on land owned by Williams College, Taconic is not just one of the best college courses in America, but one of the best, period. Created in 1896, it has a long and impressive history, infamous for tough greens and the strategic shot placement required to make par. It’s also known for Nicklaus Rock, where the pro once hit a hole in one, and the suggestion box on number 4, located in the middle of a pond. Renovation has seen the removal of more than 1,000 trees, but there are still 5,000 more that, coupled with the gently sloping hills and vibrant grass, make this course a golfer’s Mecca.

2. Stanford University Golf Course:

Nestled in the hills of Silicon Valley lies this gem that Tom Watson called “a complete golf course.” Players are regularly treated to sightings of exotic wildlife like golden eagles, green herons, deer, and foxes. After you tee off over a road on Hole 1, you’re treated to scenic views of the famous Stanford barn, San Francisquito Creek, and on a clear day, San Francisco and Oakland from Number 18. Players rave about the challenging course layout, with its dog-leg par 5s, long par 4s, and those beautiful oak trees.

3. Seven Oaks Golf Club, Colgate University:

The maintenance crew is to be commended for keeping the golf course here on Colgate’s campus in beautiful, pristine condition. Though at 6,900 yards its length is not overpowering, the water hazards on 12 holes and the thick roughs provide a stiff challenge to players young and old. The greens are some of the best in New York, large but quick. In the fall, the changing colors of the trees in the surrounding forests make the course look like a Hallmark card, and you’d be forgiven for holding up play to enjoy the view.

4. Birdwood Golf Course, University of Virginia:

Spread out on 500 acres of lush Virginia land, Birdwood is owned by UVA and is home to the men’s and women’s golf teams. Located just a mile west of campus, everything is scenic here, from the driving range, which players say makes you feel like you’re hitting balls off a cliff, to the cobblestone bridge to the green at Hole 14. A member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program, maintenance helps keep chemical use low to protect wildlife. But there’s no mercy for players, with elevation changes, high roughs, and slick greens that will challenge even scratch golfers.

5. Scarlet Course, Ohio State University:

In 2005, OSU brought in hall of famer and alum Jack Nicklaus to oversee restoration of the course originally built by renowned architect Dr. Alister MacKenzie in the early 1930s. The result is this impressive 7,455-yard gauntlet with newly restored bunkers that forces players to bring their A-game or spend the day hacking their way out of the sand. If you’re lucky enough to hit the narrow fairways, you’ve still got the well-guarded, severe MacKenzie greens to deal with. Fun fact to remember if you find yourself in the left-side bunkers on 9: they spell out “OSU.”

6. The Course at Yale:

Praising Yale for its golf course has become almost cliche, but there’s no denying that this is a fantastic set of links. Course architect Charles Blair Macdonald transformed a 700-acre area of swamp and woods into one of the best-designed courses around. The 6,700 yards are loaded with hills, lakes, and deep bunkers, with huge fairways and even bigger greens. Rounds begin with an intimidating tee-off from high above Griest Pond, and things only get trickier from there. The ninth hole is considered one of the toughest in America and is capped off by a gigantic 12,000-foot green with a gulley running right through the middle.

7. Orchards Golf Club, Mount Holyoke College:

In 2004, the U.S. Women’s Open could think of no better course than The Orchards. As the home base of the golf team for the all-women’s school Mount Holyoke, the course is truly a hidden gem here in South Hadley, Massachusetts. The gently undulating holes buffeted by tall trees make this 90-year-old course an iconic spot for lovers of the game. Players often must drive through a corridor of trees to the fairway, helping give this course this cozy, quaint feeling of playing the gentlemen’s game in New England.

8. Karsten Creek, Oklahoma State University:

Golf Digest called it the best new public course in 1994, and with good reason. Karsten Creek stretches 7,400 yards and was designed by celebrated architect Tom Fazio. As the course was forged in the heart of oak forests, players see nothing but the hole they’re currently on from the first tee-off to Number 17. The course earns its five-star rating with lush zoysia grass fairways and some of the finest bunkers in the country. The lovely Lake Louise caps off the back nine, eating up errant shots and reminding players why this is one of the toughest yet most beautiful courses in America.

9. The Rawls Course, Texas Tech University:

“The most sophisticated irrigation system ever devised” helps make this course on the dry Texas panhandle an oasis for Red Raider golfers and members of the Lubbock public. Consistently rated one of the top collegiate courses in the country, Rawls’ 7,200 yards cover what was once ultra-flat cotton fields. But while the constant West Texas wind and 80-plus bunkers provide the challenge, the sprawling, open fairways provide the scenery and remind you you’re in the plains of the Lone Star State. And if you forget, just check the flag pins: they’re Texas flags, of course.

10. University of Michigan Golf Course:

Ohio State and Michigan agree on one thing at least: Alister MacKenzie can make a fine golf course. The legendary architect actually completed this course before beginning work on OSU’s project, and a multi-million dollar renovation in 1994 returned it to world-class status. Located right next to campus, the course boasts lush, green hills and beautifully-maintained, criss-cross-patterned fairways. The course has hosted numerous junior and amateur championships, but usually the clientele are Wolverine students who come to enjoy a round in their down time on one of the best courses in the state.

Frys.com Open to Lead 2013-14 FedEx Cup Season

The PGA TOUR Policy Board has approved a reconfigured FedExCup season beginning in October of 2013. The Frys.com Open will become the first event of the season.

The Fry's Electronics sponsored tournament will be played in Silicon Valley the week of October 7-13, 2013, immediately following The Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The events formerly known as the Fall Series will be incorporated into the FedExCup with full points.

"The PGA TOUR is pleased that the Fall Series tournaments will lead off the FedExCup season. The Frys.com Open has been successful since its inception, and with it becoming the first event of the season, we are certain that Fry's Electronics and their tournament staff will elevate the event even further," said Commissioner Tim Finchem.

Tournament Chairperson Kathy Kolder, an Executive Vice President and Co-Founder of Fry's said: "Duke Butler, Tournament President, and I have been striving for this change of schedule for two years, so this is great news. It should help grow our event in stature, player field, Golf Channel audience, and attendance, therefore increasing net contributions to charity."

The Frys.com Open became an Official PGA TOUR tournament in 2006. The first two events were played in Las Vegas, NV followed by three in Scottsdale, AZ. The October 8-14, 2012 event at CordeValle Golf Club near San Jose will be the third tournament held in Silicon Valley.

The tournament awarded proceeds of $1,000,000 to various charities last year. Bryce Molder is the Defending Champion.

Second Annual Ryder Cup Junior Academy Welcomes 83 Junior Golfers at PGA Village

U.S. Ryder Cup Legends Billy Casper & Dow Finsterwald Featured Presenters

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) — Junior golfers representing 40 PGA Sections and select charitable associations will participate in the 2012 Ryder Cup Junior Academy, developed in response to recommendations from past United States Ryder Cup Team Captains, and part of the 2010 Ryder Cup Outreach program. U.S. Ryder Cup Legends Billy Casper and Dow Finsterwald will serve as featured presenters.

After a successful debut in 2011, the Academy returns July 1-8, at the PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with 83 juniors participating.

“We had a tremendously successful first year of the Ryder Cup Junior Academy,” said PGA of America President Allen Wronowski. “It was wonderful to see first-hand the impact this initiative had on a special group of junior golfers from across the country. The wonderful input of our past Ryder Cup Captains will give junior golfers a rare opportunity to learn more about the game of golf and its values beyond the competitive arena. We are confident that the Academy will continue to offer positive impressions to help build our great game.”

The Ryder Cup Junior Academy is a week-long program that emphasizes the PGA Sports Academy in a variety of skills, including playing and competing in both stroke- and match-play formats, swing mechanics, competitive course management, as well as fitness and physical assessments. Highlights of the week will include a Captains' Clinic, Captains' Dinner and golf instruction from award-winning PGA Professionals.

Ryder Cup Captains Casper and Finsterwald, each who have etched their names in golf history and provided support to both golf’s premier spectacle and PGA of America programs, will share their experiences with the junior attendees.

The 1977 U.S. Captain, Finsterwald won the 1958 PGA Championship, the first conducted in a stroke play format. A member of the PGA Professional Hall of Fame, Finsterwald compiled a 9-3-1 record while competing on the 1957, ’59, ’61 and ’63 U.S. Teams.

Casper, the 1979 U.S. Captain and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, is the all-time U.S. leading point-winner in Ryder Cup competition. He earned 23 ½ points, while competing on eight U.S. Teams in 1961, ’63, ’65, ’67, ’69, ’71, ’73 and ’75. Casper captured three major championships, including the 1959, ’66 U.S. Open, and the 1970 Masters.

The Ryder Cup Junior Academy is designed to expand the outreach of the Ryder Cup and provide aspiring young players an opportunity to experience an elite player development academy, while targeting those who may not have the resources or means to attend. It will also offer the juniors expert instruction from past U.S. Ryder Cup Captains and award-winning PGA Professionals.

As part of the 2010 United States Ryder Cup Team’s commitment—which has already impacted U.S.-based charitable organizations and students at colleges and universities nationwide—the team designated a total of $650,000 to create and support the Ryder Cup Junior Academy.

Each of the 41 PGA Sections nationwide were given the opportunity to nominate one boy and one girl each, with the remainder of the juniors selected through an at-large process. Also receiving invitations were boy and girl participants from the Notah Begay III Foundation, Lorena Ochoa Golf Foundation, Bill Dickey Scholarship Association, Pan-American Golf Association, and the AJGA Ace Grant Program.

Starting Time announces growing interest in their patented Fix with Mix, sand and seed dispensers

The Fix with Mix was Starting Time's first product nearly 10 years ago according to Hugh Penton, President.

"I was playing at our club and preferred walking using a push cart, but always a little disturbed that there was no way for a player using a push cart to easily fill their fairway divots," Penton said. "My partner was equally perturbed and carried around a used tennis ball can filled with sand suspended from the handle of his cart to solve the problem. A lot of the other walkers just ignored filling the divots or tried to fill with a piece of sod that they pushed in place with their foot. That type of "repair" would soon die and turn brown, and leave an ugly spot on the course. So, that began the birth of Starting Time and Fix with Mix."

Hugh Penton, who golfed regularly decided that a sample could be made to take down to the PGA Show in Orlando and had a prototype made up. He spent a week talking to distributors and other golf product accessory companies about the need, design and pricing. Frankly, according to Mr. Penton, the interest varied, but it was good enough to decide to go into production. Push carts were fairly new on the golf scene and most of the manufacturers and distributors were not as interested in course maintenance as in selling their clubs that were causing all of the fairway divots.

The tooling was first made in China and then moved to San Diego, where the molds were substantially improved upon and a better product design developed to United States standards. A handsome stand was developed from plastic wood and a return box developed to hold the dispensers after the players’ rounds. The hanging clip was strengthened, caps and lids redesigned and the injection molding process brought up to U.S. quality standards to make the total product higher quality and longer lasting.

Starting Time reps started selling them to hang on the bags on the back of the electric carts which eliminated the high cost of the heavy bottles and expensive brackets. This opened up a whole new market for "cart" use and saved the club that hidden expense. Golfers found that on "cart path only" days that they had a lightweight dispenser to take with them to their ball and use rather than taking a heavy bottle of sand to do the same job as the Fix with Mix. Club owners save money and the course definitely looks far better and plays better too according to Club executive Ted Axe, Regional Manager of American Golf.

A new program of re-packaging for the retail market is underway now. The dispensers are seen by the pro shop and the retailers that the market is now growing for such a handy dispenser. Most golfers like to keep their courses in the best shape possible and this is an easy way to do it, whether you walk or ride. The idea of using an old tennis ball can has grown now to a product line that should continue to grow and keep our courses playing and looking better as the golfers make the filling of their divots a priority on their rounds.

The Links at Stono Ferry Awaits PGA Championship Spectators

South Carolina’s reigning 'Golf Course of the Year' promises to provide golfers in the Charleston area a stunning excursion in Lowcountry lore

(HOLLYWOOD, S.C.) — The haunting beauty, native lore and historic tradition of South Carolina’s Lowcountry will surely bask in the world’s spotlight August 9-12, when the PGA Championship is contested on the Ocean Course on Kiawah Island.

As assuredly, PGA Championship spectators wishing to play golf when they are not watching it could not find a golf course more representative of the Lowcountry’s look and feel than The Links at Stono Ferry (www.StonoFerryGolf.com).

This renowned Ron Garl-design located less that 30 minutes from downtown Charleston hearkens back to both the Civil and Revolutionary Wars, while offering golfers a spectacular setting along the pristine Intracoastal waters and salt marshes of South Carolina.

In 2011 alone, the Golf Course Owners Association named The Links at Stono Ferry “Charleston Area Golf Course of the Year” — an award it previously captured in 2003 — along with South Carolina’s “Golf Course of the Year,” and Stono Ferry was nominated for “National Golf Course of the Year Award” as well.

Tracing its roots back before the Revolutionary War and offering the type history golfers would expect to find in Charleston, the actual Stono Ferry site was used by plantations to ferry their goods across the Stono River, and as a redoubt and battery site in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

On The Links at Stono Ferry’s 12th hole, there is a cannon pointing at the old ferry landing, and one bunker on the course was part of a Revolutionary War battlefield. Meanwhile, part of the 13th hole is laid out where an old railroad line ran from Charleston to Savannah from the 1850s all the way up to the 1960s.

Stono Ferry’s owners have set out to preserve and protect the environment with respect for the poignant reminders of its rich and storied past, and an appreciation of unique Lowcountry cultural traditions.

“The total Stono Ferry experience, and our commitment to making it the best it can be, reach far beyond tees, greens and fairways,” said Stono Ferry club manager Greg Wood, 2010 Carolinas PGA Section Merchandiser of the Year and Regional Ping Clubfitter of the Year.

Stono Ferry opened in 1989, giving the Charleston area a beautiful golf course enjoyably manageable from the championship tee yardage of 6,814, with four other sets of tees all the way up to 4,966 yards.

“Our golf experience reflects our dedication to consistently provide superior course quality and playability for our members and guests,” said Wood, “while simultaneously fulfilling our responsibilities of environmental stewardship and historic preservation.”

Check out new flyovers of the course from The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge’s Website.

4th Hole, Mount Kidd Course:  This 197-yard par-3 hole is Kananaskis Country’s most photographed hole.  The backdrop to your tee shot is the impressive Mount Kidd to your left and directly in front is Mount Lorette, the namesake for the other 18 holes at Kananaskis.  To the right of the tee is the crystal clear, fast flowing Kananaskis River and further right is the snow covered Mount Evan Thomas.

18th Hole, Silvertip Resort:  The par-4 finishing hole sums up your Silvertip experience, with tees sitting at the highest point on the golf course.  A dogleg-left orientation drops dramatically to the Timbers Clubhouse below, allowing both golfers and diners on the outdoor patio with a view of great golf shots, the breathless Bow Valley and towering peaks of the Rocky Mountains. An online webcam gives travelers a wide-angle view of the hole each day.

Canadian Rockies Golf courses are easily accessible via Calgary International Airport, with service by most major air carriers.

About Sun Valley Golf Courses
* Trail Creek is one of Golf Digest’s “Top 75 Resort Courses” in North America.  Consistently delivering enjoyable and challenging rounds for golfers of all abilities, the Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed traditional alpine layout features a full complement of stream carries and ominous bunkers well positioned to catch errant shots.  Crystal blue skies and majestic views of the surrounding mountains throughout the 18-hole, 6,968-yard par-72 course also keep golfers returning.

* White Clouds opened in 2008 to rave reviews.  In contrast to Trail Creek, the nine-hole, 3,605-yard, par-36 course of alpine-links style tests golfers’ mettles with sand trap shots, side-hill lies, risk-reward decision-making and blind shots – not to mention the 637-yard, par-5 No. 5 hole.  Adding to the drama, White Clouds is perched at 6,000 feet for stunning, 360-degree views of Pioneer, Boulder and Smokey mountains. Ernest Hemingway’s house can be seen along golfers’ journeys.

The course also overlooks the 58,000-square-foot Sun Valley Club that is open to the public with a restaurant, bar, wrap-around terraces, pro shop, locker rooms, club storage, club rental and indoor golf simulators.  A new 25-acre, state-of-the-art practice facility, the wildly popular 18-hole Sawtooth Putting Course and PGA instruction augment golfers’ memorable experiences.

* Elkhorn was created in 1974 by the famous father-son design team of Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and Robert Trent Jones, Jr.  After an extensive renovation in 2004, the club re-opened as private.  Upon Sun Valley’s acquisition last July, members as well as resort and select other guests enjoy the large, undulating greens, a front nine renowned for its hills and a back nine for water hazards on eight holes.  Despite its 7,214 yards from the championship tees and more than 100 sand traps and bunkers, the par 72 Elkhorn provides the perfect blend of bark and benevolence for experienced and novice golfers, respectively.  An upscale, 16,000-square-foot clubhouse boasts a restaurant and bar with patio seating and large TVs for game-day cheer as well as relaxation.

Starting Time Announces Anniversary of My Mini Golf Program

Starting Time celebrated the second anniversary of the My mini Golf program into the United States and Canada.

Exclusive distributors of this exceptional product to make golf fun for both kids and adults, Starting Time, a 10 year US Golf accessory manufacturer, is very proud of being a part of the success of this unique line that is finding its way into so many areas of junior golf, according to Hugh Penton, Starting Time President. "Starting Time" is a great name for the company as distributors of this program says Penton. It's time to start more young kids into golf and this is a perfect product to introduce kids to playing golf with a fun, yet instructional game.

The first presentation of My mini Golf was in Milan, Italy in January of 2008. It was developed in Munich, Germany by Georg Pal and Hannes Webber, two German Industrial Designers who loved playing miniature golf with their friends and felt that there was a need to design something for a mobile society. They decided at an outdoor barbecue party in 2005 to go ahead and instantly started building cardboard models of Mi mini Golf obstacles which they tested in the in front of the house, in complete darkness to find out if the shapes that they had developed would work. They then decided to produce them themselves as no other company was set up to take their designs and build them into perfect injection molded parts. They were convinced that the time was right for this brilliant idea for a new recreational product. They found that there wasn't a single product on the market like it, or that could be purchased at a reasonable price.

They started with cardboard models and then built full sized clay models with styling clay, a versatile material used in automotive design studios to produce full scale models used in automotive design. Georg Pal, as a designer with Audi was fully familiar with this material and the injection molding process for high grade plastic parts. Hannes Weber was the designer handling the graphic design, logistics, manufacturing and global marketing. Together they built a prize winning new golf friendly game, that is now available in the US and Canada, through Starting Time. (www.startingtimegolf.com.)

As a crossover between golf and miniature golf it can be played on a variety of surfaces. Additionally you can arrange the obstacles one after the other to get totally new courses, either indoors or out, regardless of the weather or season. My mini Golf is not limited to just kids, as families can enjoy it together and club activities built around it for golf events or charity events.
