PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship Honored

Tournament Named Champion of Economic Impact by Sports Destination Management Magazine

(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) – The PlayGolfMyrtleBeach.com World Amateur Handicap Championship has been named a Champion of Economic Impact by Sports Destination Management, the leading publication with the largest circulation of sports event planners and tournament directors in the sports tourism market.

The world’s largest single site golf tournament, more than 3,200 players participated in the 35th annual World Am, which was played August 27-31. The economic impact of the event was estimated at $14,300,000.

The World Am is always held the week before Labor Day, historically a soft spot in the Grand Strand’s tourism calendar, providing a late summer economic surge.

“The World Am was founded in 1984 to help stimulate the local economy and that remains a primary goal of the event,” said Scott Tomasello, the tournament director for Golf Tourism Solutions, the company that manages the event. “We are honored to be named a Champion of Economic Impact. The award and the financial impact the event has on the area is a byproduct of the tournament’s commitment to providing the best possible experience for our players, who are incredibly loyal to the event.”

After 72 holes of competition, all flight winners and ties advanced to the Flight Winner’s Playoff at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club, where Greg Williams became the first South Carolinian in 21 years to be crowned World Champion. The World Am featured 66 flights and 55 of Myrtle Beach’s best courses hosted the event.

As appealing as the competition was, it was only half the fun at the World Am. Each night players gathered at the World’s Largest 19th Hole, which consumed all 120,000-square-feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, to enjoy free food and drinks, a 70-exhibitor golf expo, live entertainment, demo areas, celebrity appearances and more.

The World’s Largest 19th Hole also featured a jumbotron that displayed the scores from each flight, allowing players to see their name on the leaderboard.

VIDEO: A Different Kind of Golf Trip to Aiken, South Carolina

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) – One of the most alluring attractions about the game of golf is the golf trip. Put together a group of golfers – whether it is four or 44 – pick a destination, line up the golf courses, find a comfortable place to stay … and enjoy.

It’s what keeps bringing us back, year after year.

Most avid golfers have been on a golf trip – to the Jersey Shore, to Myrtle Beach, to Florida, to the islands, to Arizona. Only the more adventurous attempt a golf trip to lesser known destinations.

Aiken, South Carolina is one of those “roads less traveled." But, after the latest episode of the Traveling Golfer television show, it may have heightened status on the golf trip bucket list.

Blending the small town charm of Aiken, with the outstanding golf that is available in the surrounding countryside is the magic that brings the December episode of Traveling Golfer television show to life.

“Not only did we shoot this show in the Aiken area but we brought 16 golfers on a golf trip during the shooting” explains Tony Leodora, host of the Traveling Golfer television show. “It was sort of a field test for this different kind of golf trip. And Aiken passed the test with flying colors.”

The Carriage House Inn, situated conveniently in the heart of Aiken’s quaint downtown area, was the base of operations. It allowed golfers to walk to nightly restaurants and sports bars. During the day, it was a short drive to quality golf courses such as Aiken Golf Club, The River Golf Club, Mt. Vintage Golf Club and The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation.

“It is definitely a slightly different type of golf destination,” comments Ricky Saucier, owner of Golf Packages of South Carolina (www.golfpackagesofsc.com). “You are totally immersed in the culture of the Deep South. At the same time, you are right across the river from Augusta, Georgia. The people in this area settle for nothing less than first-class golf experiences.”

Those golf experiences are not only first-class, but quite varied. The Aiken Golf Club dates back to 1912 and is a wonderful mix of quirky, charming golf holes. The River Golf Club, as the name suggests, is dominated by water features, as it runs along the Savannah River. Mt. Vintage Golf Club sits in a spectacular country setting, with elevation changes, enormous green complexes and turf conditions that are reminiscent of Augusta National. And The Reserve Club at Woodside Plantation is a private club, with limited outside access. It was designed by the Jack Nicklaus Design team and boasts championship conditions all year long.

The December episode runs throughout the month on the Traveling Golfer network of websites ... including The Golf Director Network (see full list of sites on travelinggolfervideo.com). It also will air a number of times in the month of December on “Rivertalk” on HTC-4 in Myrtle Beach. The Traveling Golfer also airs as a scheduled weekly feature show on NBC Sports and NBC Sports + throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. NBC Sports airings are 10:30 a.m. Sundays, 11 p.m. on Tuesdays and 11 a.m. Thursdays. NBC Sports + airs the show at 6 p.m. Mondays and Fridays.

As part of every Traveling Golfer show there is the additional feature, "Tech Talk", hosted by Tour Edge Golf experts, such as President Dave Glod. With years of experience as a club maker, Glod presents an inside look at the research and development of high-quality golf equipment.

Responding to golfers' never-ending demands to learn more about interesting golf courses and golf resorts across the country and around the world, well-traveled host Tony Leodora created the Traveling Golfer so he could take viewers on video trips to some of the most exciting golf locations. The show repeated for an unprecedented third straight year as the No. 1 Golf Television Show in America in the prestigious International Network of Golf Awards, presented at the PGA Merchandise Show in January.

The Traveling Golfer is a series of monthly shows hosted by Leodora, who has 17 years of experience in televised golf. The featured destination stays on the website for one month, before being replaced by a new show. Alternate shows also air in a two-month rotation. All old shows are archived for continued viewing on the YouTube Network and on the home website, www.travelinggolfervideo.com.

Product Review: Dune Jewelry Divot Repair Tool

Dune Jewelry has introduced some truly unique pieces into the golf community in time for gift-giving season. The divot repair tool, for instance, is designed with sand or elements from your favorite beach or golf course. Want to forever remember that round of golf at Bandon Dunes or Harbor Town? You can with the golf collection from Dune.

There are a couple dozen awesome course from which to choose, or many more famous beaches from across the world. I chose crushed shells from Waikiki Beach to commemorate a wonderful vacation I just took with my family. Our daughter surfed in the ocean while my son and I snorkeled in a lagoon, searching for fish.

From this day going forward, every time I repair a ball mark on a green, I’ll be reminded of that incredible trip to Hawaii. You can further personalize the divot repair tool with engraving (I have my initials). Choose up to three lines with 12 characters per line.

But wait, there’s more … The divot repair tool from Dune Jewelry doubles as a handy bottle opener for a refreshing break during your round. Crack open a cold one and make your playing partners jealous with stories of that memorable round or day at the beach!

You may already be familiar with Dune Jewelry as the company partnered with sports radio / TV personality Ann Liguori. The author / golf correspondent has collaborated on a special collection of jewelry - The Hamptons Rope Collection. This collection was inspired by Liguori’s love of travel, sports, animals and connecting with people all over the world.

The Hamptons Rope Collection currently consists of six items including a necklace, earrings, cuff bracelet, cufflinks and statement ring. Like the divot repair tool, each design can be customized with a sentimental element or actual sand from your favorite beach or travel adventure.

In addition to the Divot Repair Tool ($25), other items in the golf collection include a Ball Marker ($22), Golf Ball Bangle ($115), Golf Ball Stationary Necklace ($115) and a Golf Ball Wine Stopper ($38).

Golf Channel Greenlights 2nd Season of College Docu-Series Driven, Featuring Alabama and Auburn

PGA TOUR Superstar Rickie Fowler (Main Event Productions) Returns as Executive Producer,
Taps Major Champion and Former World No. 1 Justin Thomas as Co-Executive Producer for Season Two

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – Golf Channel’s Golf Films unit announced today a greenlight for a second season of Driven, a four-part documentary series executive produced by PGA TOUR superstar Rickie Fowler (Main Event Productions) that follows the competitive journeys and storied rivalries of college golf’s top programs.

Described as “Hard Knocks with golf clubs” by USA Today and “reminiscent of Friday Night Lights” by Golfweek, Driven’s second season will premiere in the spring of 2019 on Golf Channel and NBC, profiling University of Alabama men’s golf team and their “Iron Bowl” rivalry with Auburn University. The series will follow their journeys to return to the 2019 NCAA Golf National Championships in May, and also will track reigning National Champions Oklahoma State University (Fowler’s alma mater), featured on Driven’s inaugural season along with their “Bedlam” rivals, University of Oklahoma.

Fellow PGA TOUR superstar Justin Thomas, a member of the 2013 Alabama Crimson Tide national championship team, will partner with Fowler as co-executive producer. Driven is written and produced by Ollie Stokes, a 20-time Emmy Award winner who also wrote and produced Showtime’s ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. McGregor.

“Driven is a passion project of mine, and I’m proud to partner with Justin this season to highlight the intense Alabama-Auburn rivalry within the world of college golf,” said Fowler. “The first season of Driven was exciting to make as my Cowboys clinched our 11th national championship, ironically by beating Alabama in the finals. And we expect to capture all the drama as this season plays out by continuing to follow the reigning champions at Oklahoma State, but now also going behind the scenes with Alabama for our second season of Driven. Go Pokes!”

“I watched every episode of the first season of Driven and I told Rickie that Alabama would be great for a future season,” said Thomas. “I’m excited about the opportunity to team up with Rickie and showcase Alabama’s golf program like never before. And it’s weeks like this with the Iron Bowl that remind me why college sports are so great and how much fun I had playing golf for Alabama. Roll Tide!”

“Rivalries and traditions are synonymous with college sports. When we created Driven with Rickie Fowler, our aim was to help showcase those rivalries, traditions and college golf,” said Mike McCarley, president, Golf, NBC Sports Group. “The series provides PGA TOUR superstars the opportunity to connect with a broader fanbase who follow their college programs. Justin Thomas is the perfect partner for season two. There may be no larger and more rabid fanbase right now than Alabama, riding high going into this week’s Iron Bowl with the No. 1 football team in the nation. Similarly, Driven will capture how Alabama’s men’s golf team has national championship aspirations of their own after last year’s runner-up finish.”

Leading up to Golf Channel’s coverage of the 2019 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, Driven is scheduled to air on three consecutive Mondays starting May 6 on Golf Channel, with the final installment premiering on NBC following the championships. Driven will feature exclusive footage from production crews embedded with Alabama, Auburn and Oklahoma State’s men’s golf programs over the course of the 2018-19 season, culminating in Fayetteville, Ark., with the University of Arkansas hosting the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships at The Blessings Golf Club from May 24-29. Golf Channel will air live coverage of the championships Monday-Wednesday, May 27-29.

Alabama, currently the No. 4 ranked team in the country following the fall season, finished runner-up at the 2018 NCAA Championships, falling to Oklahoma State in the championship match. Auburn, the reigning SEC champions who advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Championships before falling to Oklahoma State, defeated Alabama in the championship match at the East Lake Cup in early November, the final event of the fall season for all three programs.

One of Oklahoma State’s most-decorated players as the nation’s former top-ranked amateur, Fowler was the first freshman in NCAA history to win the Ben Hogan Award as the NCAA’s top men’s golfer in 2008. Fowler, who turned professional in 2009, has recorded eight international wins in his career, including four PGA TOUR victories, led by the 2015 PLAYERS Championship, and has contributed to winning U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams and represented Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

PGA Catalunya Resort Cements Position As One of Europe’s Premier Golf Venues

(Girona, Spain) – PGA Catalunya Resort, near Girona, continues to win critical acclaim, being crowned Spain’s Best Golf Course at the 2018 World Golf Awards and placing 4th in National Club Golfer’s Top 100 Golf Resorts in Continental Europe.

The two accolades close a year that has seen the European Tour Destination affirmed with the No.1 Course in Spain by top100golfcourses.com and ranked No.2 in Golf World’s Top 100 Golf Resorts of Continental Europe 2019-2020.

2018 has also seen the resort’s 5* Hotel Camiral commended at the prestigious European Property Awards for its interior design, created by the Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio, to win the ‘Best Hotel Interior Spain’ category, while its clubhouse upgrade was named Clubhouse Renovation of the Year 2018 by Golf Inc magazine.

Chris Frost, Managing Director at World Golf Awards, said: “It was with great pleasure we presented the Stadium Course as the winner of Spain’s Best Golf Course at this year’s ceremony. Its layout is, without doubt, the best Spain has to offer and a challenge to all level of golfer.

“Set among towering pine trees and beautiful lakes within truly fabulous grounds, to stay and play at PGA Catalunya Resort should be on every golfer's bucket list.”

The venue’s €53 million investment programme, which kicked off in 2016, has seen significant developments across the resort, both on and off the fairway: the opening of a second hotel, the seeding of a new vineyard, the implementation of ecological conservation programmes, numerous course improvements and residential developments, and, soon to come, an upgraded golf academy and a man-made recreational lake for water sports.

David Plana, CEO of PGA Catalunya Resort, said: “Spain is blessed to have a great number of exceptional courses and venues, so it is tremendously encouraging to see PGA Catalunya Resort consistently ranked so highly by many of the biggest media brands in golf.

Connecticut’s Keney Park Golf Course Selected to Host 2019 Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championships

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) – The PGA of America announced today that Keney Park Golf Course in Hartford, Connecticut, will host both the Boys and Girls Junior PGA Championships in 2019. The Girls Junior PGA Championship will be contested July 9-12, while the Boys will tee it up July 30-August 2. Each event features 144 players in a four-round, 18-hole stroke play format.

“It is a thrill for both Championships to be held in Connecticut for the first time,” said Suzy Whaley, a longtime Connecticut resident who recently became the PGA of America’s first-ever woman President, a position she assumed at the PGA Annual Meeting on November 9 in Palm Springs, California. “Both Championships continue to reach new heights each year. We are excited to partner with Keney Park, the Connecticut PGA Section and the City of Hartford to showcase the game’s brightest junior players competing at the highest level.”

Keney Park opened in 1927 with a nine-hole course designed by Devereux Emmet; the Robert “Jack” Ross-designed back-nine opened four years later. In 2014, the Connecticut PGA Section signed an agreement to serve as consultants to help Hartford regain operational ownership of Keney Park and oversee a course restoration to enhance the facility’s level of sustainability.

“This will be the maiden voyage for the Connecticut PGA Section with respect to hosting PGA of America championships, and we cannot be more excited to welcome the nation’s most talented girls and boys,” said Thomas Hantke, Executive Director of the Connecticut PGA Section. “We’re not only proud that we’ve been chosen to host these prestigious championships, but we’re equally appreciative to be able to showcase the restoration of Keney Park as part of the revitalization efforts ongoing in the City of Hartford. It has been one of the original and central purposes to re-establish a first-class golf experience to help lead the way to improving the quality of life.”

“Next summer will be exciting as local spectators will have the opportunity to see some of golf’s brightest future stars play on the Keney Park Golf Course,” Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin said. “We look forward to these young competitors and their families visiting our City. Golf has a long tradition in the city of Hartford, and these two premier events will add to our story.”

Keney Park is led by PGA Director of Golf Peter Seaman, who has been on the staff since July of 2015. The golf course was recently ranked by Golfweek as the No. 2 place to play in Connecticut, as well as tied for first on Golf Inc.’s 2016 Public Renovation list.

Both Championships have been springboards for many of the PGA and LPGA Tours’ most accomplished players. Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Phil Mickelson have competed on the Boys side, while the list of past Girls Junior PGA winners includes Major Champions Inbee Park, Ariya Jutanugarn and Lexi Thompson.

Yealimi Noh captured the 2018 Girls Junior PGA with a dominating, record-setting performance at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Kentucky, while Akshay Bhatia became the first two-time winner following his victory in the 2018 Boys Junior PGA, which was secured with a greenside chip-in eagle on the 72nd hole at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Bhatia also won in 2017. This past September, both players teamed up on the triumphant United States Team in the 2018 Junior Ryder Cup at Disneyland Paris.

Sports Streaming Platform DAZN Claim Aerial Stunt During Tiger v. Phil Event in Las Vegas

Global sports streaming platform DAZN has come forward to claim the aerial spectacle that left sports fans stunned

(LAS VEGAS) – The tiger is out of the bag, after global sports streaming platform DAZN came forward to claim the aerial writing display that lit up the Tiger v. Phil golf event at Shadow Creek.

The Thanksgiving stunt was organized by global sports streaming platform DAZN, in retaliation to overpriced pay-per-view, and restricted access to the event for sports-hungry fans.

At approximately 1:30 p.m. local time, with the players heading down the sixth hole, a squadron of six aircrafts entered the airspace above Shadow Creek Golf Course, and left a series of cheeky written messages in their slipstream.

The stunt saw DAZN drop 20 messages between 7-15 characters in the sky, that poked fun at the ludicrous price of PPV, and also teased the golfers as they made their way around the iconic course. All good fun. The spectacle lasted almost two hours, much to the amusement of the fans and players.

DAZN, which has shaken up the live and on-demand sports broadcasting industry since it launched in the U.S. in September on a global mission to bring premium sporting events to the masses, for a fraction of the cost of traditional PPV platforms.

A company spokesperson, said:
“Pay-per-view is a bad deal. We wanted to make a big statement to sports fans and show them that DAZN is on their side. We’re extremely proud to bring a global live and on-demand sports streaming service to the masses for just $9.99 per month. And with our one-month free trial, the Dec. 15 matchup between Canelo Alvarez and Rocky Fielding will be delivered to fans at no cost.

Last month, DAZN announced a ground-breaking partnership with boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions that will take the Mexican sports icon off of pay-per-view for his next 11 fights and make him widely available on the DAZN platform for a low monthly subscription cost. Fans can download the app and tune in to see the first fight on Dec. 15 – Canelo vs. Rocky.

DAZN burst onto the scene in 2016, debuting in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Japan. Its early success across Europe and Asia spawned launches in Canada (2017), Italy and the U.S. (2018). Just this month, DAZN announced plans to expand to Spain in 2019.

Limited-Edition PXG Darkness Operator Putter Unveiled on Black Friday

PXG Introduces New Putter Face Technology with Gripping Benefits

(Scottsdale, AZ) - PXG continues its Darkness Friday tradition with the release of the limited-edition, serialized PXG Darkness Operator Putter. Tailored to suit any stroke, this blacked-out, mallet-style putter sets up beautifully and provides maximum forgiveness across the entire face.

“This year, the introduction of PXG’s limited-edition Darkness Putter is more than the reveal of a sleek new, murdered-out finish with a sick insignia,” said PXG founder and CEO Bob Parsons. “It is the introduction of our game-changing new face technology.”

Milled from 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum, the PXG Darkness Operator Putter present an innovative, new variable-sized, pyramid face pattern that offers gripping benefits. The small pyramid structures bite into the golf ball cover to create more consistent launch and roll characteristics, as well as an improved feel and sound.

The size of the pyramids varies across the putter face with the greatest pattern density around the center. This is designed to offset ball speed loss typically experienced on mishits, and ultimately leads to more consistent distance control across the entire face.

The PXG Darkness Operator Putter comes standard with five 10-gram weights in the sole, at a finished head weight of 375 grams. The weight kit included not only enables golfers to adjust the overall head weight of the putter but also to finely-tune the dynamic close rate of the head. This helps offset either a push or pull miss tendency.

Each limited-edition putter is emblazoned with the Darkness skull insignia and the number 26, representing the 26th Marine Corps Regiment that Bob Parsons served with during the Vietnam War. The PXG Darkness Operator Putter comes with an exclusive Darkness grip by Super Stroke, Darkness Weight Kit, a signature PXG Darkness head cover and is uniquely numbered according to the order it was milled.

Available until they’re not, visit www.PXG.com to learn more and purchase PXG’s Darkness Friday special release.

Washington State Golf Association Developing New Brand and Website

Buffalo.Agency to Support Evolution with Fresh Visual Identity, Digital Presence

(FEDERAL WAY, Wash.) – The Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) – a non-profit organization representing over 675 clubs and nearly 70,000 golfers statewide and in Northern Idaho – is partnering with Buffalo.Agency (Buffalo) for strategic branding and website consultation.

Buffalo will work closely with WSGA leadership to refine its brand strategy as well as develop a new identity, creative marks and materials. This will culminate with the March 2019 launch of a re-imagined website to engage even more current and future golfers throughout the region. Recently, Buffalo led similar brand transformations for the Massachusetts Golf Association (Mass Golf) and The First Green, with Colorado Golf Association currently in development.

“This is a unique opportunity in our organization’s history to evolve our brand and reinforce our commitment to core amateur golfers, while promoting an even more welcoming and enjoyable experience for new and prospective golfers,” says WSGA CEO and Executive Director Troy Andrew. “Buffalo’s deep industry expertise will help solidify the new WSGA as a leader in the golf community at the local, regional and national levels.”

As completion of its five-year strategic plan nears (2020) as well as its centennial anniversary (2022), the timing is ideal for WSGA to further enhance its image across both internal and external communication channels including digital, social media and marketing collateral.

In addition to a visual refresh, WSGA and Buffalo will collaborate to modernize the purpose, importance, integrity and progressiveness of the WSGA brand to engender relevance while activating new revenue streams for the organization.

“There are an estimated 500,000 golfers in the Evergreen State and we know WSGA has dynamic programming and exciting events to engage these golfers,” says Glenn Gray, Vice President of Buffalo.Agency. “The WSGA and its meaning are the first impressions to creating authenticity with new or lapsed audiences to further amplify its value proposition throughout the region.”

WSGA provides golfers significant resources including handicapping, GHIN services, volunteering opportunities, industry recognition and junior golf programs like Youth On Course. As the region’s representative of the United States Golf Association, WSGA’s mission is to “enrich the lives of people in Washington and Northern Idaho through the many social, recreational and lifetime benefits of the game of golf.”

New Global Ranking for Golfers with Disabilities to Launch in 2019

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. AND ST. ANDREWS, Scotland) – The USGA and The R&A will administer a global ranking for golfers with disabilities, which will help to grow participation and competition around the world and to promote inclusivity within the sport.

The World Ranking for Golfers with Disability will launch on Jan. 1, 2019 and will be administered in tandem with the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) for both men and women via www.WAGR.com.

The USGA and The R&A will assume responsibility for the ranking following agreement with EDGA, which created the comprehensive and independent Ranking for Golfers with Disability in 2014.

Further information for golfers and tournament organizers wishing to register their details with the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability will be made available later this year.

“One of golf’s best benefits is that it can be played by everyone, and it can be played for a lifetime,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA Senior Managing Director of Championships.

“We are pleased to administer this ranking in partnership with The R&A, as it elevates an important population of the golf community that clearly loves the game and enables a variety of competitive opportunities around the world. Together with the modifications to the Rules of Golf for golfers with disabilities and the USGA’s work to make golf courses more accessible, we are working to create meaningful and lasting change to make golf more welcoming.”

Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development and Amateur Events at The R&A, said, “There is an accelerating growth in the number of events around the world for golfers with disabilities to compete in so it makes absolute sense that there is a global ranking to provide a robust measurement of an individual’s skill and ability.

“It is another important step towards ensuring that golf is more inclusive of people of all ages and abilities. Along with our colleagues at the USGA we will continue to support EDGA’s drive to grow participation and competition in the sport among all disability groups.”

Tony Bennett, President of EDGA and Director of Education for the PGAs of Europe, said, “This is a crucial step forward for the growth and development of the sport for golfers with disabilities and we believe it will act as a catalyst for encouraging more people into playing golf, both competitively and recreationally, around the world.”

Tripp Davis and Associates Prepares to Transform Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club

(Norman, OK) — Tripp Davis and Associates (TDA) has been retained by Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club in Nichols Hills, Oklahoma, to direct the extensive renovation and restoration of the Perry Maxwell and Alister MacKenzie designed course that opened in 1929.

The TDA plan will renovate drainage, cart paths, the structure of tees, greens and bunkers, and re-grass most of the course, to include using Latitude 36 Bermuda for tees and fairways, and 007 Bent Grass for the greens.  Work will include restoring the original rounded/irregular shape of the tees, returning strategic widths in fairways and removing many introduced trees, plus restoring the strategic intent and style of the bunkers and the size of the original greens.

The work to the greens also will include preserving the existing contours, mostly original, while making minor changes to enhance them for modern play.  All greens had the existing contours scanned and each layer of the rebuilding of the greens will be carefully monitored with GPS equipment to make sure the important contours are artfully preserved.  TDA is also working with EC Design of West Des Moines, Iowa, to plan a completely new irrigation and pumping system.

“Being given the responsibility to renovate and restore the Maxwell/MacKenzie course at Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club is uniquely exciting for me given my history there and the many friends I have there,” said Tripp Davis, lead golf course architect.  “I first played the course in 1985 as a freshman on the University of Oklahoma golf team, and it has since been one of my favorite courses in the world.  Being able to bring the golf course back to more what it was intended to be by Mr. Maxwell and Mr. MacKenzie will be one the greatest thrills of my professional career.”

The Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club was one of only a few courses that Maxwell and MacKenzie collaborated on, with Crystal Downs in Michigan, and the Ohio State University Scarlett Course being two of the more high profile courses they did together.  Davis has limited his workload so he can be on site, 30 minutes from his home, on an almost constant basis.

TDA Shaper Jason Gold, who has been a TDA staff member for over 10 years, will be on site to shape the course, while Davis will personally oversee the shaping of the surfaces of the greens to preserve the existing character.  “Jason and I will be working to make sure every detail is right and that every strategic element is pure to how Mr. Maxwell and Mr. MacKenzie wanted the course to play.  They were extraordinary at making everything they did look like a natural part of the land, and using that to create beautiful strategic variety and interest, highlighted by the angles they created and the importance of precision when playing into the greens,” stated Davis.

Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club will close its golf course for construction this winter and there are plans for a limited reopening in December 2019, with full play in Spring 2020.

Lexi Captures 10th Career Victory with the Bridgestone Golf TOUR B X Ball

Lexi Thompson’s CME Group Tour Championship Victory Totals 3 Wins in a Row for the Bridgestone Golf TOUR B X

(COVINGTON, GA) – Bridgestone Golf Tour team member Lexi Thompson ended the 2018 LPGA season in style, using Bridgestone’s Tour B X ball on her way to victory at the 2018 CME Group Tour Championship. Thompson won in dominating fashion at Tiburon, recording a 4-round total of 18-under par for an impressive 4-shot victory over one of the LPGA’s most competitive fields of the year. Thompson’s win is the 10th of her career and vaults her to #5 in the world.

Joining fellow Bridgestone Tour Team members Bryson DeChambeau and Matt Kuchar, Thompson’s win was the third in the last three weeks for Bridgestone’s TOUR B X golf ball.  The TOUR B Series golf balls represent Bridgestone’s most technologically advanced models to date. During development, company engineers used data from nearly 350,000 in-person ball fittings, combined with insights from leading third-party industry sources, to identify needs of specific player types. They then drew on more than 800 golf ball patents to determine which proprietary technologies would most benefit each type of swing characteristics identified.

Returning to the scene of a crushing loss that ended her last season, Lexi carded rounds of 65, 67, 68 and 70 for a tournament best 270 (18-under par) total to take the title.  In testing the TOUR B X ball with the Bridgestone R&D team, Thompson optimized her fit and acquired an additional 5 yards off the tee with improved accuracy. In addition, Thompson’s approach shots benefitted from her adoption of the TOUR B X as well, seeing a more preferred penetrating ball flight.

“Lexi is one of the most exciting players to watch on the LPGA Tour, or any Tour for that matter, and we’re glad she has chosen to trust her game to the Bridgestone TOUR B X ball,” said Dan Murphy, President and CEO of Bridgestone Golf. “Her combination of power off the tee, laser-like approach shots and incredible finesse around the green is really unmatched in the women’s game. We are excited to see her win her first ever Tour Championship and we know this will build some important momentum for her going into the 2019 season.”
