Troon Selected to Manage Alpine Country Club

(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Troon, the leader in upscale golf management, development and marketing has recently been selected to manage Alpine Country Club in Cranston, Rhode Island. The nearly half-century old private country club began as a men’s social club back in 1946 and was originally called the Cranston Alpine Country Club.

Over the next 15 years the men’s association moved to various locations to conduct their business meetings until the membership decided to build a golf course and unanimously voted to purchase 205 acres of land on Pippin Orchard Road from Basilio and Amelia Macera.

Designed by golf course architect Geoffrey Cornish and building designer D. Thomas Russillo, Alpine Country Club’s golf course officially began play in 1961 with the Clubhouse opening a year later on Easter Sunday.

“Alpine has a rich and colorful legacy and is one of the premier country clubs in Rhode Island,” said Ryan Eckroat, interim general manager of Alpine Country Club. “It provides a wonderful lifestyle experience for individuals and families and we take a great deal of pride in the amenities that we are able to offer our membership.”

Those amenities include an 18-hole championship golf course, full driving range and practice putting green, Pro Shop, Bag Room, private men’s and women’s lockers rooms, indoor and outdoor dining, adult and children’s swimming pools. On the culinary side at the Club, Alpine is well-known locally for having an exceptional array of menu selections in each of their dining rooms.

“We are truly excited to be partnering with a world-class company like Troon who will strategically improve our overall Club operation and greatly enhance the lifestyle amenities we offer our members and their guests,” said Frank Connor, Club President.

Alpine Country Club is also environmentally-conscious having been certified by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management. The Club consistently reduces water usage, chemical usage for fertilization and pest control, energy consumption, solid waste and air emissions.

“By going green, all of us at Alpine strive to make a positive influence on the community, by making the right decisions when it comes to the environment and to better prepare our future generations,” added Eckroat.

Over the years, Alpine Country Club has fostered strong family values as many members have had their children grow up and become members themselves.

“For nearly 50 years, Alpine Country Club has been a marvelous addition to the Cranston community and all of us at Troon are excited to be able to implement our management principles, thereby providing an enhanced lifestyle experience for all of Alpine’s members and their guests,” said Rob DeMore, vice president of operations for Troon Privé, the private division of Troon Golf.

Nexbelt Partners with Folds of Honor Foundation

(Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) - Nexbelt, The Belt With No Holes, has partnered with the Folds of Honor Foundation to provide quality belts for staff, members and as a fundraising effort.

The Folds of Honor Foundation is rallying a nation to ensure no family is left behind in the fight to preserve American freedom. Through scholarships and other assistance, they give back to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or disabled in service to our country. The Folds of Honor Foundation provides healing, hope and an opportunity for dreams to be realized.

As part of the newly-formed partnership, Nexbelt co-owners Eddie and Francis Rowland presented customized belts bearing the FOH Foundation logo on both the buckle and ball marker to FOH staff members at the Patriot Cup held on Memorial Day, May 26th at The Patriot Golf Club in Tulsa, OK.

The custom FOH belts will be sold at fund raising golf tournaments and other events throughout the year. Nexbelt will be donating 20% of all FOH belt sales directly to the Folds of Honor Foundation. FOH Foundation custom belts are available for purchase on the Nexbelt website www.Nexbelt.com.

"We've partnered with foundations in the past," said Nexbelt Owner Eddie Rowland, "but never with a foundation as important and meaningful as this one. The men and women who put their lives on the line every day to ensure our freedom here in the U.S. deserve our utmost respect and support. We are honored to be working with The Folds Of Honor Foundation and we encourage everyone out there to support this great cause."

Known for its innovative technology, Nexbelt's Go In! Golf Series of belts feature a unique ratcheting system called PreciseFit that allows the wearer to adjust his or her belt in quarter-inch increments, providing the best fit, feel and fashion available, as well as the convenience of a hidden ball marker located behind the face of the belt.

Folds of Honor
The Folds of Honor Foundation was founded in 2007 by Major Dan Rooney, a former F-16 pilot, golf course owner, PGA Professional and USGA member. A Major in the Air National Guard and a decorated military aviator, Rooney has served three combat tours in Iraq. After returning from his second tour, Major Rooney witnessed a profound situation that drove him to create the Folds of Honor Foundation.

Over 700,000 soldiers have been killed or disabled in the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan--Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. These service members' families exceed the national average of 2.5 dependents per household. As of January 1, 2014, over 1.4 million dependents have been adversely affected by multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. More than 87% of the dependents affected by the recent wars do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. While the federal government provides some support for these families, it cannot succeed alone without proactive civilian organizations to assist.

The need is great, and, to paraphrase the words of Patrick Henry, their battle is ours. As Americans, we feel a collective duty to honor those who have sacrificed by serving the families they leave behind.

Stock Exchange

Headed by the reigning Mrs. South Carolina — a Myrtle Beach-based golf instructor who solicited the help of many Carolinas PGA members — the Junior Golf Exchange is an innovative non-profit designed to help put golf clubs in the hands of more juniors, while at the same time helping grow the game

(GREENSBORO, NC) – Meredith Kirk, Executive Director of the Junior Golf Exchange, is an LPGA golf instructor living and teaching golf around Myrtle Beach, S.C. Winning the 2014 Mrs. South Carolina America Pageant helped raise awareness of Kirk’s innovative, not-for-profit program. She also enlisted the support of various Carolinas PGA (CPGA) members to participate in the program and serve on her Board, including new Board President Paige Cribb, PGA and also CPGA Section Secretary, recently becoming the first female officer in section history.

Other CPGA members represent Blackmoor Golf Club (Paul Fastenau); Caledonia Golf & Fish Club (Marc Guertin, Eltoria Renwick, Bob Seganti); Indigo Creek Golf Club (Chapman Hutchinson, A.J. Sawyer); Monroe Country Club (Nick Jacobi); Patriots Point Links on Charleston Harbor (Brad Parker, Brandon Ray); The Traces Golf Club (E.B. Bell, Ryan Bell); and True Blue Golf Plantation (Bart Pomano, Bob Seganti).

What follows is a question-and-answer exchange with Meredith Kirk:

Who came up with the idea for a Junior Golf Exchange (JGE)?

I came up with the idea when I was the Myrtle Beach coordinator of the PGA Junior League. I noticed a lot of families wanted to get involved but they didn’t have the junior golf equipment to get their children started in the sport.

How does the program work?

It operates through a golf course or a facility [such as the YMCA]. That means someone who donates the clubs and those who get them – so there’s a middleman [a golf course or host facility]. The reason why there needs to be a middleman is because the children need to be club-fitted appropriately for their new set of junior clubs. As a Certified TaylorMade Club Fitter, I understand the importance of proper clubs for an individual. You do not just want to give any child just any set of clubs. They need to be custom fit for the closest possible fit for the child. Gender, height, and skill level are criteria for this process.

How is JGE important?

The decline of junior golf, I feel, isn’t with the instructional programs – there are a lot of great ones out there – but it is in part due to people who are struggling to make the initial investment in equipment for their kids. I think it’s the initial cost of getting started in golf that is hindering its development of junior golf.

That’s what is keeping kids from golf.

I said at the time, ‘I would love to start a program that would supplement all of the different programs out there that are awesome like LPGA Girls Golf, Play Golf America, PGA Junior League, Get Golf Ready, First Tee, among others.’ The idea came about from issues I was seeing from these programs not be able to retain a high number of junior golfers.

So tell us how your vision grew from there.

Well, that’s why I entered the Mrs. South Carolina America pageant.  I thought if I could win it, it was the first one I had ever entered I would be able to gain attention for the Junior Golf Exchange and hopefully spread the word about this unique program that could possibly supplement the established teaching and competitive junior golf programs.

After I had won it [it was the first pageant she had ever entered!], I went ahead and formed the non-profit organization and got the ball rolling … literally. I even was fortunate enough to film an endorsement with the legendary PGA superstar, Larry Nelson.

We launched the program last December and it’s been operating for a solid six months now. We’ve already had 50,000 people visit the website, which tells me it’s a good idea and that the idea is resonating with families.

So in essence, when you put a golf club (or a facility such as a YMCA) in the middle of the process, it creates a new dynamic for golf.

Yes, it not only gets the club into the junior golfer’s hands, but it helps grow the game of golf. This is also an incentive for a golf course to participate. The course receives advertising on JGE and will be able to retain more junior golfers at its facility. Some courses right now are offering discounted rates on range balls, memberships, course play, and lessons. This is a great opportunity for courses to reach the next generation of golfers.

Are there enough clubs to go around?

No, right now we need inventory. The minute clubs comes in, they are gone.

We need people to go into their garages and see if they have complete sets of kids clubs: criteria for donating are that the clubs are not older than five-years old, grips are in fair condition and that the set is a true junior golf set and it is complete and ready to use. Also, we have store on JGE website which people can go and order clubs online to donate to participating facilities. It is a great way to give to give the game of golf to a child. We are having a text-to-give campaign. Text the keyword GOLF to 41444 and make a donation of $11. Every little bit helps to grow the program. We are in need right now and the demand for clubs is high. Proceeds go to purchasing equipment.

What about sponsorships for JGE?

Right now we are also looking for national sponsorships. We’ll need a company to help drive this initiative. We want our logo intertwined with their’s. We need a company that understands the importance of this program and the need for it.

That’s the goal. I believe it will come in time. It’s just getting the word out there and having faith that others will recognize that this is a major issue in the development of junior golf right now.

Finally, how does the program work?

This is an exchange program. It not just giving away free sets of clubs. The junior golfers are encouraged to use the clubs for a year, then after a year, to turn them back in and get a new one. There is an inspection process involved also. In essence, a youngster can actually upgrade his or her equipment every year up to the age of 14.

I know from personal experience how this works. I have three sons, and every year they grow another 2-3 inches and get stronger. I’ve had my own junior golf exchange going on for years now, but there have been times that I still have to fill in the gaps and go out and buy new clubs.

The program is not just a giveaway. The goal is to get a somewhat fitted set of clubs into the hands of a junior golfer year after year up until his or her 14th birthday. As the golfers grow in height and skill level, it’s important that they have the right equipment to fit their growing needs. Ultimately, the goal of the program is to take the burden off the parents and guardians to provide golf equipment. If the program is utilized by a child from the time he or she starts JGE up until they program cut off age at 14 ... any child could potentially have had 10-12 sets through the program saving thousands of dollars.

I think it is a pretty cool deal.

Talamore Resort's Open Pig Pickin'

The battle of East vs. West in the world of North Carolina barbecue has gone South — to Talamore Resort, just in time for the Pinehurst area’s historic summer doubleheader

(SOUTHERN PINES, N.C.) — While the debate around the Tar Heel State rages between the vinegary, eastern-style barbecue and the western, tomato-based, “Lexington Style,” through the years many other barbecue influences have found their way into the state via Texas, St. Louis, Kansas City — even Jamaica. Though these additions may not be a part of North Carolina’s cultural history, they certainly give it flavor.

Adding to the most recent flavor burst is the “Pavilion at Talamore,” located in the Southern Sandhills on Midland Road and mere minutes from the Pinehurst Resort.

Suffice to say, the golf lifestyle among the pines just got a wee bit tastier.

For years now, Talamore Golf Resort has been one of the Pinehurst area’s top stay-and-play destinations with 36 outstanding holes designed by two legends, Rees Jones and Arnold Palmer. The Talamore Resort Course and the Mid South Members Course continue to receive high acclaim, and the resort also offers its guests two unique lodging opportunities at the Talamore Golf Villas and The Lodges at Mid South.

But on a Thursday night, with the sun setting after another stellar day of golf at Talamore or Mid South, nothing goes down better than the taste of freshly cooked pork at the resort’s newest amenity.

“The ‘Pavilion at Talamore’ formally opened May 1,” says John McDougald, PGA Director of Golf Operations at Talamore Golf Resort.

Located in the villa complex on the Talamore side of the resort, the pavilion is available to all resort guests on a first-come-first-serve basis. It is a large, covered facility — with covered seating for up to 70 that serves first and foremost as a gathering place.

“It’s a great place to get outside and meet and greet rather than sitting in your room, unit or in a hotel lobby,” McDougald says. “The facility is designed for shared activities and is not to be reserved.”

The only planned event at the pavilion is a series of Thursday night “Southern-style pig pickins” — with true Southern sides — designed to give Talamore guests traveling from all compass points an authentic North Carolina experience. It’s a party open to Talamorians, courtesy of the club.

“We interact with guests from all over the country but we are in Carolina,” McDougald adds. “We are not on the coast doing seafood; we are not in Maryland doing crabs; we are not in Texas doing steaks; nor are we in Boston doing lobster. We are in North Carolina doing barbecue. It’s quite an eye-opener for many — to open the cooker and see a whole pig cooking in it. A lot of folks haven’t had that experience. We try to make it educational.”

After cooking for 10 hours, the pork, forked right off the cooker, is ready to be enjoyed. But there’s even more to be enjoyed at the pavilion, including continual golf coverage during the dual U.S. Opens in June.

“We’ll have TVs out there for the Opens for guests to watch the events,” says McDougald. “There’s also a fireplace for the fall and winter.  It’s becoming a great meeting place for guests when coming into town. It’s a great place to say hello to long-time friends. It’s a great way to start the day or end an evening.”

Like the Pinehurst area experience itself, the pavilion and the Thursday night get-togethers have, according to McDougald: “Added to the hometown feel everybody is in search of when they visit the destination. We are excited about that.”

Charitable Impact of Nicklaus Golf Balls to Receive Support from Buffalo Communications

Raising Funds for Children’s Charities Through Promotion of Innovative, Premium Product That Simplifies Ball Selection Process

(VIENNA, VA) – Buffalo Communications has been selected by Nicklaus Companies to help the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital raise funds for pediatric programs through sales of the new, innovative Nicklaus Golf Balls; designed, tested and perfected under the active supervision of the legendary Jack Nicklaus.

Available exclusively at www.nicklaus.com and through pro shops at the more than 200 Nicklaus Design courses in the U.S., a percentage of the sales price is donated to the charities.  Consumers using nicklaus.com to purchase balls at essentially a wholesale price also receive free shipping.  If via FedEx delivery services, an additional donation is made to St. Jude.

Available in three specially-designed models, each golf ball accommodates a specific player type.  A color-coding system makes the selection process extremely easy.  The Nicklaus White ball is designed for golfers who typically tee off from the forward or white tees; Blue is for those who prefer the middle or blue tees; and Black is for lower-handicap golfers who might use the back or black tees.

“By simply knowing the tees golfers play, we can estimate swing speed ranges,” says Nicklaus, winner of more than 120 professional tournaments, including a record 18 majors and 73 PGA TOUR events.  “So, we conceived the balls based on each golfer’s unique ability, be it an everyday player or professional, to score better and enjoy the game even more. All you need to know is the tee you play from.”

The Nicklaus team assembled experts in materials, technology, engineering, design and manufacturing to develop the product.  Launched roughly seven months ago, the high-performance, made-in-the-USA Nicklaus Golf Balls have already won media-bestowed awards for providing golfers with exceptional control, feel, spin and distance.

Online sales save golfers money because distribution costs typically built into product sold through traditional retail channels have been reduced.  This allows Nicklaus Golf Balls to be priced attractively at $28 to $32 per dozen and generate greater charity donations. Visitors to nicklaus.com can also make voluntary contributions; to date, nearly 80 percent of consumers have opted to make a donation.

“We wanted to reduce consumer confusion associated with selecting a ball, create high-quality options for all players, and give back to those in need in the process,” says Howard P. Milstein, Co-Chairman of Nicklaus Companies.  “Buffalo Communications is an ideal partner to spread the word about the golf balls’ performance and inspire altruism.”

“The R&D that goes into Nicklaus Golf Balls is extensive, so it’s no wonder they’re rapidly gaining in popularity” says Rich Katz, Managing Director of Buffalo Communications.  “Color coding according to skill level or handicap means golfers playing the proper ball speeds the pace of play and increases engagement with the sport.”

Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Announces Major Renovation

Enhancements Designed to Improve Playability for Leisure Players While Maintaining the Challenge for Advanced Golfers

(Maricopa, Ariz.) – Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, named among the “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” by Golf Magazine, has announced plans for a significant renovation project aimed at improving the course’s playability for leisure players while maintaining the challenges and shot-values enjoyed by experienced golfers. The enhancements include a complete bunker renovation, additional tee boxes, expanded landing areas, and other design improvements on several holes. Plans also include a hybrid conversion of the practice facility to serve as a six-hole short course in the afternoon and a traditional driving range during peak times of the day.

With the project scheduled to start May 27 and be completed by September 2014, the changes at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes make a major statement in the industry by taking action to make the golf experience more enjoyable for a broader range of golfers and creating an environment suited for juniors and players who are new to the game. When complete, the course will be ideally suited to appeal to both resort-style play and competitive tournaments.

“The Ak-Chin Indian Community is proud of its involvement with the Southern Dunes course since acquiring ownership in 2010,” said Louis J. Manuel, Jr., tribal chairman. “We are pleased to be working with Troon and the course architects to make these very important enhancements to our already beautiful course.”

To ensure the integrity of the award-winning design at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, original course architects of Schmidt-Curley Design and Fred Couples were brought in to lead the project that involves a complete bunker renovation. In all, 83,000-square-feet of bunkers will be removed from the course’s current total of 480,000-square-feet.  Major improvements also include significant turf expansion between many of the forward tees to eliminate unnecessary forced carries for those choosing to “tee it forward” or are still learning how to consistently hit shots in the air.

“This facility enhancement project is a game-changer for Ak-Chin Southern Dunes on a local, regional and national level, said Brady Wilson, general manager. “The project addresses every spoke of the wheel with regards to improved playing conditions, better playability for core golfers, more challenge for accomplished players and growth of the game options.”

Additional enhancements include re-vegetation of native grasses and many transitions between bunker edges and native desert. A new back tee will be added on No. 1 (a change made with the experienced golfer in mind) while new forward tees are added on holes 5, 8, 12, 15 and 17. Improvements on No. 17 also include a nearly full-redesign with an expansion of the green, reshaping of a large dune to open sightlines to the hole, and changes to the bunker complex around the green.

For more information on Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club, visit www.golfsoutherndunes.com.

The Ak-Chin Indian Community, which owns the nearby Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino and the UltraStar Multi-tainment Center at Ak-Chin Circle, has brought together championship-style golf and world-class gaming and entertainment. Gaming and golf packages are now available through Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, creating a truly exciting and multi-faceted destination, pleasing to a wide range of visitors. The course sits on 320 acres of land that was once a part of the Ak-Chin's original May 1912 reservation before it was removed by Presidential Executive Order in late 1912. Nearly 100 years later in 2010, the Community recovered its sacred land when they purchased Ak-Chin Southern Dunes after it was originally developed as a private club. The course currently boasts several coveted accolades that include Golfweek’s list of the “Top 100 Resort Courses,” “Best Courses You Can Play,” and “Top Casino Courses,” as well as Golf Magazine’s list of “Top 100 Courses You Can Play.”

GolfTalk Live Is Growing the Game with New Sponsor PGN+

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) - GolfTalk Live, the award-winning radio show hosted by Tony Leodora, has entered into a new partnership with The Professional Golfers Network (PGN+) and recognizes a common effort to grow the game of golf.

The Professional Golfers Network (PGN+) was founded earlier in the year. PGN+ is an elite network of PGA Professionals, country club members and top tier golfers, looking to play the best courses the area has to offer - and offer skilled golfers access to private clubs.

This new idea of revenue generation allows the courses to release tee-times that are otherwise not being used. The course sets the time and price to be listed on the platform, which is then open to the PGN+ community (www.pgnplus.com). This not only adds another platform to capitalize on down time at the course, but it brings new potential members and avid golfers through the door.

In addition, PGN+ has entered into a partnership with the Philadelphia Section PGA, as part of the governing organization's Growth of the Game initiative.

"There is no doubt the state of the private club is in jeopardy," explains GolfTalk Live host Tony Leodora. "PGN+ is a breath of fresh air to an environment that needs to adapt or die. With the Philadelphia Section PGA partnership, the standards have been set higher than any program before it."

"PGN+ is your exclusive golf passport to access the courses of your dreams," says Jake Wagner, CEO and Co-Founder of PGN+. "Strategically partnering with GolfTalk Live and the Philadelphia Section PGA is a perfect step for providing the much-needed revenue and support for the golf industry."

The GolfTalk Live radio show, hosted by Tony Leodora, is the award-winning weekly radio show that was named No. 1 Golf Radio Show in America by the International Network of Golf at the PGA Merchandise Show in three of the last six years. The show airs 52 weeks a year from 7 to 8 a.m. each Saturday on WNTP 990-AM and on www.wntp.com. The show also has gone into syndication, with the first affiliate being WOND 1400-AM in Atlantic City. It airs there at 3 p.m. on Saturday. GolfTalk Live also can be heard any time following each show on its official website, www.golftalklive.net.

To join the PGN+ community, go to www.pgnplus.com.

Experienced, Beginner Golfers Attracted to Program Now Operated by Billy Casper Golf

(VIENNA, VA) – Women on Course – the nation’s premier golf-lifestyle networking organization – has tripled membership since being acquired Billy Casper Golf (BCG) in September 2013.

BCG expects membership to grow by 400 percent in 2014 over 2013.  Year to date, about half the new members are either “returning” or first-time golfers.

Company management cites several contributors to the dramatic growth:
* A new, compelling value proposition for new members in partnership with brand-name golf and lifestyle product manufacturers and service providers
* Addition of exciting signature, weekend resort destination and custom events (more than 2,000 at 200 “official sites” in 25 markets) for members
* Participation in Women on Course golf and non-golf (social) events is up by more than 150 percent as women, no matter their skill levels, are increasing looking to play golf with other women
* The addition of 150-plus private and public BCG-managed properties attracting female golfers and non-golfers in their respective communities
* BCG’s marketing bandwidth and customer-relationship management programs reaches millions of golfers nationwide

* Women comprising nearly 20 percent of the active golf population is holding steady, and 33 percent of new golfers are women (source: National Golf Foundation)

“The scale and connections of Billy Casper Golf are powerful,” says Donna Hoffman, President of Women on Course which she founded in 2005.  “Our membership growth affirms that females are responding exceptionally well to our welcoming social and business networking environment.”

“Women on Course typifies the short- and long-term vitality of the game,” says Peter Hill, Chairman and CEO of BCG, the largest owner-operator of golf courses, country clubs and resorts in America. “By introducing and keeping women connected to golf, we aim to meaningfully lift the U.S. female participation rate in the next three years.”

Women on Course removes intimidating barriers causing females to overlook the game.  It provides fun, supportive and interactive settings for business and stay-at-home women to experience the golf lifestyle without primary focus on competition and score:
* A “Play Your Own Way” mantra means beginners and course-ready golfers learn fundamentals and etiquette
* A “Score 5 to Survive” rule – tee shot, fairway approach, chip, two putts – promotes practice without slow play

Fashion, fitness, travel and luxury components surrounding the world of golf are incorporated into Women on Course programming.  Members enjoy free gifts; special access to private clubs; discounts on greens fees, apparel, equipment, wine and other products; golf and educational resources; contests; and forums.

International Golf Spotlight Turns to Atlantic City

ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer boasts impressive field featuring the world’s Top 10 ranked female golfers playing the newly renovated Seaview Bay Course

(ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.) —The unofficial start to the summer golf season begins this week near Atlantic City’s world-famous boardwalk — on the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club’s newly renovated Bay Course, in what is popularly known around South Jersey as “A Shore Tradition,” the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer.

Defending champion Karrie Webb joins fellow Hall of Famers Juli Inkster and Se Ri Pak, who are set to tee it up with future legends of the game like teen phenom Lydia Ko and major winner Lexi Thompson. Additionally, the field features fan favorites such as Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis, as well past champions of this event like Stacy Lewis, Cristie Kerr and Brittany Lincicome.

The May 30 to June 1 LPGA event features the world’s Top 10 ranked players in the Rolex Rankings and reigning champions of all five LPGA majors — along with 94 out of the top 100 players on the LPGA’s money list.

“Atlantic City Golf is the best-kept secret on the East Coast and this week’s tournament certainly brings worldwide attention to one of our member courses and our entire destination,” said Greater Atlantic City Golf Association President Tom Sullivan.

New Jersey’s entertainment capital offers golfers 18 world-class courses designed by the likes of Donald Ross, Tom Doak, Willie Park, Jr., William Flynn and Hurdzan & Fry among others. From Cape May National in the south to Sea Oaks Golf Club in the north, the likeable layouts offer everything from traditional parkland style to true links land, highlighted by views of untouched wetlands, stately pine forests, wildlife preserves and working vineyards.

“We are thrilled to have the best professional women golfers in the world commit to our tournament,” stated Tim Erensen, executive director for the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. “It speaks to the quality of this tournament, the spectacular course and supportive fans that flock to this golf-rich destination each year.”

In addition, Atlantic City Golf includes plenty of historical significance as well. For starters, the term “birdie” originated at Atlantic City Country Club, which has played host to six USGA events. In addition, Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club is the site of Sam Snead’s first PGA Championship title and started hosting the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 1986. Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen fine-tuned their games at The Links at Brigantine Beach before heading across the Atlantic to the play the Open Championship.

Murray State Alum Jared Wolfe Takes Inaugural Bluegrass Open Presented by Lucky 8 Stables

Kentuckians sweep top three spots with Owensboro’s Matt Atkins and Prestonsburg’s Ryan Martin tying for second

(Shelbyville, Ken.) – Perhaps, in a bit of foreshadow, Louisville native Jared Wolfe showed off his power hitting capability by winning the Martinrea Heavy Stamping Long Drive competition earlier in the week at Shelbyville Country Club. The power hitter, who has status on the Web.com Tour this season and nine starts on the number two tour, outdrove the competition on the way to his first ever NGA Tour Pro Series win at this year’s Bluegrass Open presented by Lucky 8 Stables at the championship Shelbyville Country Club in Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Ironically, for the veteran of two NGA Carolina Series wins, it was his putter that may have led to his victory on Sunday. After struggling with putts for much of the first three days, Wolfe made a 20 footer to save par on 18 at the end of his third round, giving him a 2 stroke lead heading into Sunday and perhaps some needed momentum. That momentum led to another putt on 18, this time a ten footer for birdie after sticking the pin on Sunday’s final round, leaving him with three putts for the win. All Wolfe could think of, as his birdie attempt barely slid to the side, was his missed opportunity to shoot 29 on the back nine final round. He tapped in for par to close out the win and got a congratulatory hug from his caddy, who also happens to be his wife Kelsey, as they celebrated their 10 month anniversary in dramatic style.

The day was filled with drama as Wolfe’s two fellow Kentuckians, Ryan Martin of Prestonsburg and Matt Atkins of Owensboro, each made a run at him. Martin, who played collegiately at Morehead State and was in the final pairing with Wolfe, erased the two stroke difference that separated the two by shooting 3 under par on the front nine and actually headed to the back nine with a one-shot lead. His back nine 33 just wasn’t enough to overcome Wolfe’s amazing 30. Martin did chip in for birdie on 18 which gave him a share of second with Atkins. Atkins, who started the day in 3rd, charged all day but could never get closer than a stroke to Wolfe. The former USC Aiken star, who was part of the NGA Tour’s winning Cup team the week before, shot a final round 65 to finish in a tie with Martin for second giving the home state Kentuckians the top three spots in the inaugural event.

Recent US Open local qualifier, Pete Skirpstas out of Medina, Ohio, started the day tied for 3rd and, after shooting two under par Sunday, finished in solo fourth. The Mount Olive alum, who was also paired in the final group with Wolfe and Martin, shot a solid 3 under par 33 on the front but two bogeys on the back would knock the big hitter out of contention for the win. Two-time Georgia Tech All-American and former Missouri star Jace Long matched Atkins low round of the day 65 to help them move from tied 12th into a tie for 5th with 2012 NGA Tour Player of the Year Brandon Brown. Brown, the Shelbyville native who starred at Eastern Kentucky and played in last year’s US Open, was playing his first competitive golf in 8 months due to injury. After shooting par first day, Brown came back with three sub 70 rounds to climb back into contention in front of the hometown crowd. UK alum Andy Winings, a member of the Web.com Tour the past two years, and Ohio State alum Kevin Hall finished in a tie for 8th with former PGA TOUR member Michael Letzig and White’s Georgia Tech teammate Jason Hak. Hak, once the No. 1 ranked amateur in the world, broke Sergio Garcia’s record by becoming the youngest player to make a cut in a European Tour event. Brown’s Shelby High teammate Derrick Bohannon, who went on to play collegiately at Midland, finished at one under par for the event and tied 15th. Former University of Louisville star Daniel Iceman, who once called Shelbyville Country Club home, finished 24th.

The NGA Tour would like to thank Greg Gibson, Bobby Newberry, Brett Lafferty, and the entire Shelbyville Country Club staff, membership, and volunteers for conducting such a great event during the 2014 Bluegrass Open presented by Lucky 8 Stables. The tour resumes play May 28th at Three Ridges Golf Club in Knoxville, Tennessee for the 4th annual Three Ridges Golf Classic. Spectators are welcome and, as always, admission is free to the public.

But after a bogey-free 65, Korda found herself in the winner’s circle for a second time this season with a one-stroke victory over Nordqvist (who finished solo second) at the Airbus LPGA Classic.

Korda played the new Tour Preferred MC irons, which feature the renowned Speed Pocket technology for increased ball speed and higher launch, to hit wonderful approach shots and set up the six birdies carded on her closing nine. Her win marks the fourth consecutive week that TaylorMade’s acclaimed Tour Preferred irons have won on a worldwide professional Tour.

In addition, Korda also played the recently-launched Tour Preferred wedges, featuring the most aggressive groove TaylorMade has ever produced for exceptional spin and control on all shots.

While striding with confidence on the fairways of RTJ Golf Trail in Mobile, Ala., Korda wore the new adidas climachill apparel, which feature aluminum welds inside the back neck for a cooling sensation.

With the win, Korda moves into the top 10 in the LPGA Race to the CME Globe. It is her third career victory.

Triangle Business Journal Lists Old Chatham Golf Club atop Triangle’s Private Golf Courses for 2014

Prestigious Golf Club Previously Recognized by N.C. Golf Panel as Region’s Top Course

(DURHAM, N.C.) – Old Chatham Golf Club, a prestigious golf club based in North Carolina’s Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill Triangle area, has announced its ranking as the Triangle’s top private golf course in 2014 by Triangle Business Journal. The publication’s Book of Lists provides readers with the essential information on the leading buyers, businesses and employers in over 60 of the United State’s most dynamic markets.

“We are extremely proud of our listing atop Triangle Business Journal’s list of private golf clubs,” said John Marino, club director of operations. “Old Chatham is surrounded by several great courses and clubs in the area, and to receive top billing from both Triangle Business Journal and the North Carolina Golf Panel is a true accomplishment. It is also a testament to what our club has strived for since our founding more than a decade ago.”

The list also includes information about rounds played at each of the Triangle’s private golf club. Old Chatham’s members played 12,000 rounds of golf in 2013, a number purposefully kept to a minimum in order to enhance the member experience. The club is known for providing its members with the highest level of service and providing the best golfing experience available.

“This ranking comes as no surprise, as the club honors the history and traditions of golf and places good manners and quality service above all else,” said Allen Wilson, Old Chatham president.

Old Chatham has come a long way since its founding in 2001. This year, in addition to the Triangle Business Journal ranking, the club received top marks from the North Carolina Golf Panel. The 2014 Panel ranked Old Chatham’s golf course top among all Triangle region golf clubs, as well as having the area’s best greens complexes and best 19th hole. The Panel rated Old Chatham as the No. 18 overall golf course in North Carolina.
