Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy Wins Honda Classic, Achieves World No. 1 Ranking
(Fairhaven, MA) - To be the world's best takes superior talent, burning desire and complete trust in your equipment. At the Honda Classic, Titleist Brand Ambassador Rory McIlroy relied upon the Pro V1x golf ball and a full bag of Titleist equipment to earn his sixth career win, and fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming the world’s top-ranked player.
McIlroy ascended to World No. 1 following his two-shot victory, where he closed with a 1-under 69 en route to a 12-under 268 total. The win was McIlroy's sixth as a professional and third on the PGA TOUR.
Fellow Titleist Brand Ambassador Tom Gillis (Pro V1, 910D3 driver, 910F.d fairway metal, CB irons, Vokey Design approach and lob wedges and Scotty Cameron Newport Beach 2 putter) also closed with a 69, including a birdie on the final hole to tie for 2nd, his best career finish. Gillis led the field in Strokes Gained - Putting (2.489) and finished tied for 3rd in Greens in Regulation (69.4%). Lee Westwood (Pro V1x) fired a final round 63 to finish alone in 4th.
"My short game all week has been very good, and it's what you need on a tough golf course like this," McIlroy said. "I was able to do that, especially on 15 and 17. My short game felt good all week, and it definitely saved me today."
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING: McIlroy’s statistics backed up his statement, as he led the field in the Scrambling category, converting 83.3 percent (21 of 25) of his up-and-down opportunities. While he credited his short game prowess for his victory, McIlroy also trusted his Titleist equipment to finish among the top 10 in five other key tee-through-green statistical categories. Off the tee, he was 8th in Driving Distance (297.6 yards), tied for 10th in Greens in Regulation (66.7%), was 8th in Sand Saves (77.8%), tied for 6th in Putts Per Round (27.3), and finished 5th in Strokes Gained-Putting (1.566).
WHAT'S IN RORY McILROY'S TITLEIST BAG?: Titleist Pro V1x golf ball, 910D2 (8.5) driver, 906F2 (13, 18) fairway metals, MB (3-9) irons, Vokey Design SM4 pitching (46.08), sand (54.08), and lob (60.04) wedges, Scotty Cameron GSS Newport prototype with deep milled face putter.
PLAYERS’ CHOICE: Titleist was the top choice of the field in the golf ball (91), iron (37), wedge (121) and putter (55) categories.
NATIONWIDE TOUR: The Pro V1x was also the golf ball of choice for Edward Loar, who broke a five-way tie with a birdie on Sunday's 16th hole and parred in to win the Panama Claro Championship. It marked the first career Nationwide Tour title for Loar, who posted a 4-under par 276 victory total. He finished one shot clear of four players, including fellow Titleist golf ball loyalists Cameron Percy (Pro V1) and Ryan Armour (Pro V1x). Titleist was the top choice of the field in the golf ball (90), iron (36), wedge (120) and putter (43) categories.
WORLDWIDE WINS: A two-tour sweep this week improves Titleist’s year-to-date golf ball victory total to 25, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 3.
