Tom Fazio Part of Group to Purchase Forest Creek Golf Club

Fazio’s North and South Courses at highly regarded Pinehurst real estate community have both been ranked among the country’s Top 100

(PINEHURST, N.C.) — World-renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio has joined Colony 9, LLC as an investor to purchase Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst. The transaction was completed on December 28, 2017 for an undisclosed price.

One of only two residential golf course communities in the United States to feature two Golfweek “Top 100” golf courses, Forest Creek Golf Club’s North and South Courses are distinctly different, but both are championship caliber gems.

Fazio’s ownership stake in Colony 9 is the first time in his long and illustrious career that he has invested in one of his own designs. No living designer has more credits on Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses and Golfweek’s collection of America’s Best.

“Forest Creek is one of the truly elite golfing experiences in this country,” said Fazio. “I was given carte blanche to adapt the two courses to the majestic, rolling North Carolina Sandhills topography and the result was that the layout of each challenging but playable course does not resemble the other.”

Fazio joined two other long-time Forest Creek Members in forming Colony 9, which has initially committed at least $2 million in golf course enhancements in the next two years. “I have always considered Forest Creek at the top of my accomplishments as a golf course architect and look forward to spending more time there while personally overseeing the renovation programs of both the North and South Courses,” said Fazio.

In addition to the two golf courses and related facilities, Colony 9 acquired 112 undeveloped lots in the 1,265-acre master-planned community, which is platted for 750 residential lots. All current members in good standing at the private club were invited to join the new club without any additional fees, and the ownership group has committed to never assess the membership nor increase dues for at least two years.

Team Secret Golf’s Patton Kizzire Wins Sony Open In Hawaii

Rising Star’s Player Channel to Debut on Next Month
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.) – Winning is becoming a habit for Patton Kizzire. Two months after claiming his initial PGA Tour title at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico, the lanky Alabama native added a second career victory last Sunday, outlasting James Hahn on the sixth hole of a sudden-death playoff at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

A former Tour Player of  the Year, Kizzire’s recent win came in just his third start after his victory in Mexico last fall and now gives members of the Team Secret Golf staff three titles early in the 2017-18 PGA Tour season. Kizzire’s victory in Hawaii also made him the first player to claim multiple events this year. Fellow Secret Golf staff member Pat Perez won the CIMB Classic in Malaysia shortly after the Tour’s wrap-around season got underway last October. 

Kizzire’s win in Honolulu virtually assured him of a spot in The Tour Championship, the season-ending finale for the top-30 on the FedEx Cup points list, and also jumped him into the top 60 in the Official World Golf Rankings. “The first win was big, and this one is even bigger,” Kizzire said following his recent victory. “Our ultimate goal is to be No. 1 at the end of the year. We have a long way to go but a fast start is always positive.”

Payne, Lewis and Els honored by Golf Writers Association of America

(HOUSTON) – Billy Payne, who retired last fall as chairman of Augusta National Golf Club after 11-plus years of progressive and dynamic leadership, has been voted winner of the Golf Writers Association of America William D. Richardson Award for outstanding contributions to golf.

Payne will be joined by LPGA star Stacy Lewis and Hall of Famer Ernie Els as award winners at the 46th ISPS HANDA GWAA Annual Awards Dinner presented by The PGA of America and USGA Wednesday April 4 in Augusta, Ga.

Lewis will receive the organization’s Ben Hogan Award given to an individual who has overcome a physical handicap or serious illness. Els will receive the ASAP Sports/Jim Murray Award for his long-time cooperation with the media.

During his time as chairman of Augusta National, Payne was a leader in expanding the game around the world while continuing to enhance Augusta National and the Masters tournament. He joins Clifford Roberts as the only former chairman to win the Richardson Award. Augusta National Founder Bob Jones was also honored with the Richardson in 1958.

Under Payne’s leadership, the Asia-Pacific Amateur and the Latin American Amateur were created and became significant global events. Payne also was instrumental in the creation and success of the annual Drive, Chip and Putt Championship which culminates on the Sunday before the Masters at Augusta National.

Payne also led the club and the tournament into new digital ventures while continuing the mission of Augusta National’s founders, expanding the club’s facilities and improving the patron experience at the Masters.

“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to the entire Golf Writers Association of America for this amazing honor. So many of this award’s recipients were an inspiration to me, especially Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts,” Payne said.

“Like these two great men, I believe golf teaches so many important and rewarding life lessons. Their commitment to the game motivated me every day I was privileged to serve as Chairman of Augusta National. Whatever successes occurred during my tenure were a direct result of the pursuit of excellence they alone established.”

Lewis overcame long odds to become the No. 1 ranked women’s player in the world and a two-time LPGA player of the year.

When Lewis was 11, she was diagnosed with scoliosis and she wore a back brace for seven years. She wore the brace for 18 hours a day, taking it off only when she played golf.

Lewis eventually had back surgery to have a rod and five screws implanted. She gradually returned to competitive golf and went on to win the 2007 NCAA individual championship and 12 LPGA tournaments, including two major championships. Lewis lives in the Houston area and when she won the 2017 Cambia Portland Classic a week after Hurricane Harvey hit, she donated her winner’s check to hurricane relief efforts.

“It’s a real honor to win an award with Ben Hogan’s name on it. I always felt like what I went through was for a reason, that there was always a purpose. While I wouldn’t wish what I went through on any other kid, I wouldn’t change what happened to me,” Lewis said.

Els was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2011 for a sparkling worldwide career. A four-time major champion, Els has won 19 PGA Tour events and 71 tournaments worldwide. He was also honored by the GWAA in 2010 with the Charlie Bartlett Award for his commitment to Autism through his foundation and The Els Center of Excellence.

A former No. 1, Els has been named European Tour player of the year three times and has developed an open and long-standing relationship with the media.

“Thank you to everyone at the Golf Writers Association of America and ASAP Sports for this honour. What a nice gift to start the New Year,” Els said.

“Jim Murray was a brilliant, funny writer and obviously a legend in his field, so it’s nice that this award is named after him and, from my point of view, it makes the award more special.

“I’ve always enjoyed a good relationship with the golf media. In fact, many of the writers, pundits and commentators that travel the world with us have become good friends of mine. They have a pretty tough job and I have a lot of respect for what they do. That’s why I’ve always tried to be honest and ‘give it straight’ in press conferences, which I think they’ve appreciated over the years.”

Out is In for 2018 Outer Banks Golf

(OUTER BANKS, NC) – Those looking for an ideal 2018 golf escape should get ready to bask in Coastal Carolina warmth and sunshine — with a wee bit of influence from ocean breezes. In recent years, North Carolina’s fabled Outer Banks (OBX) have begun to transform themselves into a true golf destination offering an array of courses more closely tied to nature’s coastal elements than most along the East Coast.

“The Outer Banks has everything a golfer is looking for when going on a golf vacation – well-manicured courses, great restaurants, a variety of housing options and unique activities other than golf,” says long-time Kilmarlic Golf Club Director of Golf Bryan Sullivan, a former North-South Amateur champion and an All-American at the University of North Carolina.

Sullivan’s Kilmarlic Golf Club is a popular Tom Steele design nestled along the marshland of the Albemarle Sound and host course for both the 2004 and 2009 North Carolina Opens. The wonderful mainland course provides a pure OBX layout with water and wetlands virtually in play at all times.

Host to an annual autumn collegiate event, Kilmarlic is also ideally located just five miles west of the bridge that connects the mainland to the barrier island.

“In 10 minutes,” Sullivan says, “I can have my feet in the Atlantic Ocean.”

In terms of its setting, with several holes playing along a rugged coastline Nags Head Golf Links is one of the most exposed golf facilities to the wind along the state’s coast. A Scottish-style course, Nags Head GL is also considered one of the finest. The capricious breezes off sound-side waters create different challenges every time you play it.

Designed by Bob Moore — who clearly followed the adage “don’t mess with Mother Nature” when crafting this gem — the Nags Head layout incorporates the best of links-style golf against a backdrop as dramatic as you’ll find anywhere up and down the Atlantic Seaboard.

The front and back nine closing holes along the sound are particularly spectacular. Nags Head’s bar and restaurant, not surprisingly, is home to the most dramatic sunsets in town, with views not only across the immediate Roanoke Sound, but towards three other sounds (Albemarle, Croatan and Pamlico) that flow into it from the north, west and south as well.

Currituck Club is “sculpted on the type of land where golf began,” says its architect, the renowned Rees Jones, who designed a 6,800-yard masterpiece among 600 acres of dunes, wetlands, maritime forests and sound seascapes. There is, not surprisingly, plenty of water on the course, most of it on the front nine, but unlike Nags Head, most of the water at Currituck Club comes in the form of marsh and wetlands.

Jones is known for moving large amounts of dirt during construction, which is part of the reason his finished product offers a true, championship feel. You won’t find a weak hole at Currituck and the par-3s are particularly stunning, including two that play over water. The best is arguably the signature sixth, located at the hub of the front nine where four holes converge, which plays anywhere from 150 to 200 yards over water, with stunning views of the sound off in the background.

Currituck Club is demanding from tee to green, with undulating fairways that require an accurate tee shot and large, contoured greens that make lag putting among the most challenging elements of the design. Like its OBX brethren, Currituck Club plays longer than its yardage might indicate, as it is designed directly at sea level and is bolstered by constant wind especially along the homeward stretch, where the breeze is almost always in the golfer’s face.

The Pointe Golf Club is located on the rural mainland side of OBX and across the four-lane highway from Kilmarlic. A traditional Russell Breeden design, the course is also said to be the first in the country to have the A-1 bentgrass — a dense, disease-resistant strain — installed across its corridors.

This, of course, is only natural given that the site is a former turf farm combined with rolling farmland. In addition, the management at The Pointe has always devoted itself to providing the finest course conditions imaginable.

The Pointe is also the area’s most player-friendly design and features a peaceful setting with no houses. In fact, it is the only course in the area that is not in a residential community. At a par of 71 with five par-3s, The Pointe can usually be played in four hours, which means more time back at the beach.

Meanwhile, the seventh hole at The Carolina Club is one of the most memorable offerings along the entire North Carolina coast. An island green aged to perfection can create that kind of legend. The 166-yard one-shotter features a TPC Sawgrass-type island green with water, water everywhere. It’s truly an experience to be had.

Still, The Carolina Club is more than a one-hole wonder. As the longest OBX course, it will delight you with liquid challenges that are often compounded by ever-shifting ocean breezes. The Pointe’s sister course features a strong mix of holes with several scenic par-3s (in addition to its signature island green No. 7) and two good risk-reward par-5s to complete each nine.

The Carolina Club’s positioning as the first course heading into town from the north and last one on the way out makes it the ideal play on either side of your OBX golf vacation.

U.S. Open’s Long Island Return Highlights 2018 USGA Championship Schedule

Women’s Open Moves to May; Inaugural Senior Women’s Open Slated for July

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association (USGA) confirmed the sites and dates for its 2018 championship schedule, which includes 14 annual championships and four international competitions. The season begins with this weekend's fourth Latin America Amateur Championship, which will be played from Jan. 20-23 at Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile.

Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., will host the 118th U.S. Open from June 14-17, the club’s fifth U.S. Open. The 73rd U.S. Women’s Open moves in advance of the U.S. Open and will be played May 31-June 3 at Shoal Creek in Shoal Creek, Ala. The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., will host the 39th U.S. Senior Open from June 28-July 1. The inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open is slated for July 12-15 and will be played at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill.

“The courses hosting in 2018 are excellent partners and we appreciate their efforts in preparing to conduct exemplary championships,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “The USGA has always honored the history of the game, so it is fitting that we are returning to two of the Association’s five founding clubs. Shinnecock Hills is the lone venue to host U.S. Opens in three centuries and Chicago Golf Club was founded by Charles Blair Macdonald, a major figure in early American golf.”

This will be the 10th time the U.S. Open has been played on Long Island. Shinnecock Hills hosted the second U.S. Open in 1896, with James Foulis defeating defending champion Horace Rawlins by three strokes. In 1986, Raymond Floyd shot a final-round 66 to break out of a tightly bunched field to win by two strokes. In 1995, Corey Pavin clinched his two-stroke victory over Greg Norman with a memorable 4-wood approach to the final green. In 2004, Retief Goosen outlasted Phil Mickelson by two strokes to claim his second U.S. Open title.

The U.S. Women’s Open will begin in the month of May for the first time since 2001 and is part of a reorganization of the USGA’s championship schedule. Designed by Jack Nicklaus, Shoal Creek will host its third USGA championship. It previously hosted the 1986 U.S. Amateur and 2008 U.S. Junior Amateur championships.

The inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open will be the 12th USGA championship at Chicago Golf Club. The championship is open to both female professional and amateur players with a Handicap Index® not exceeding 7.4 who have reached their 50th birthday as of the first day of competition. The format for the 120-player field will mirror the other USGA Opens. Chicago Golf Club, the oldest golf club in the U.S. in continuous use at the same location, was renovated in 1923 by Seth Raynor and remains largely unchanged today.

The Broadmoor will host its eighth USGA championship with the U.S. Senior Open and the sixth on its East Course, originally designed by Donald Ross. Eduardo Romero became the second Argentinean to win the Senior Open in 2008, while So Yeon Ryu won the 2011 U.S. Women’s Open in a playoff. In 1959, Jack Nicklaus won the first of his two U.S. Amateur triumphs, while Annika Sorenstam claimed the first of her three U.S. Women’s Open titles in 1995. The East Course also hosted the 1962 Curtis Cup Match.

The 40th Curtis Cup Match, a biennial competition between female amateur teams from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland, will be contested at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y. The USA Team will look to reclaim the Curtis Cup June 8-10, in between the U.S. Women’s Open and U.S. Open.

Pebble Beach (Calif.) Golf Links will host the 118th U.S. Amateur from Aug. 13-19 with Spyglass Hill Golf Course serving as the stroke-play co-host venue. The two courses also combined to host the U.S. Amateur in 1999. The Golf Club of Tennessee will be the host site for the 118th U.S. Women’s Amateur, the 16th USGA championship in the Volunteer State.

The 71st U.S. Junior Amateur and 70th U.S. Girls’ Junior championships will be played the same week, July 16-21 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., and Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach, Calif., respectively. The 38th U.S. Mid-Amateur and 32nd U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur will also be held the same week, Sept. 22-27 at Charlotte (N.C.) Country Club and Norwood Hills Country Club in St. Louis, Mo., respectively. Ak-Chin Indian Community to Host 'Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun' World Long Drive Association Event in May

(Maricopa, Ariz.) – The Ak-Chin Indian Community has partnered with the World Long Drive Association (WLDA) to host the “Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun” on Monday and Tuesday, May 14 and 15, 2018. A portion of the officially sanctioned WLDA event will be televised in primetime on Golf Channel on Tuesday, May 15th. The Ak-Chin Smash in the Sun will take place adjacent to Harrah’s Ak-Chin Casino on a natural grass golf range (with stadium seating) being constructed for the event.

The event will feature a 32-man field competing in the Open Division based on World Long Drive rankings, along with a Women’s Division field of 16 competitors. Qualifying rounds will narrow the field to eight men and four women advancing to take part in the televised portion of the competition on Golf Channel. As part of the WLDA tour event festivities, there will be two-days of open qualifying on May 11-12. In addition, a World Long Drive Pro-Am will be held on Tuesday, May 15 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
