International Golf Spotlight Shines on Atlantic City

ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer boasts impressive field playing the famed Seaview Bay Course

(ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.) —The unofficial start to the summer golf season begins this week near Atlantic City’s world-famous boardwalk — on the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club’s renowned Bay Course — in what is popularly known around South Jersey as “A Shore Tradition,” the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer.

The May 29-31 LPGA event features 19 of the world’s Top 20 ranked players in the Rolex Rankings and reigning champions of all five LPGA majors (Michelle Wie, Brittany Lincicome and Inbee Park) — along with 94 out of the top 100 players on the LPGA’s money list.

Crowd favorites such as Paula Creamer, Morgan Pressel and Natalie Gulbis, and past champions like Stacy Lewis and Cristie Kerr are among the 144 players who will compete at this year’s tournament. The field also features 21 players who have won a combined 52 major championships, as well as eight of the top 10 players on the all-time LPGA money list. That group is highlighted by three Hall of Famers and past champions of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer – Juli Inkster, Se Ri Pak and Karrie Webb.

“On an annual basis we attract one of the best fields on the entire LPGA Tour,” said Tim Erensen, executive director of the ShopRite LPGA Classic Presented by Acer. “We’re extremely excited to see commitments from the greatest golfers in the world and we look forward to hosting them in South Jersey.”

“Atlantic City Golf is gaining more and more positive notoriety and this week’s tournament certainly brings worldwide attention to a member course and our entire destination,” said Harry Bittner, President of the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association.

New Jersey’s entertainment capital offers golfers 18 world-class courses designed by the likes of Donald Ross, Tom Doak, Willie Park, Jr., William Flynn and Hurdzan & Fry among others. From Cape May National in the south to Eagle Ridge Golf Club in the north, the likeable layouts offer everything from traditional parkland style to true links land, highlighted by views of untouched wetlands, stately pine forests, wildlife preserves and working vineyards.

In addition, Atlantic City Golf includes plenty of historical significance. For starters, the term “birdie” originated at Atlantic City Country Club, which has played host to six USGA events. In addition, Stockton Seaview is the site of Sam Snead’s first PGA Championship title and started hosting the ShopRite LPGA Classic in 1986. Harry Vardon and Walter Hagen fine-tuned their games at Brigantine Golf Links before heading across the Atlantic to the play the Open Championship.
