(RELEASE) - "Power to the people" say the editorial staff at Golf Magazine. Referencing a few of the design decisions made by Richard Mandell at the recently re-opened Keller Golf Course outside St. Paul, Minnesota, it is clear that one reason Golf Magazine named Mandell's work the Municipal Renovation of the Year for 2014 is because he listened to his clients. In this case, the client wasn't just Ramsey County, Minnesota; it was the throng of golfers who call Keller their home.
Against his wishes, he left two trees in play. Despite his preferences, he resisted the urge to create grass hollows around the greens because back in 1929 they weren't part of the original design. But he was able to keep the Keller character intact and modernize it for the golfers of today.
"I have been competing around the place since the early 70s, and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for keeping the feel of the old", said golfer Greg Murphy. "I loved the update."
The editors of Golf Magazine agreed saying, "Credit Mandell for balancing the desires of the regulars with a realistic look to the future."
Richard Mandell Golf Architecture has won awards in three decades, yet this particular award is special to Richard because of Golf Magazine's reach.
"To win an award in such a mainstream golf publication really is special for me. This is more of a golfer's read, not restricted to our industry. Golfers will take notice and they are who I design for." said Mandell.
