Flying High to Hilton Head Island

Playing golf on Hilton Head Island keeps getting easier. With Hilton Head Island Airport’s recent runway extension, there are more ways than ever to arrive on the Golf Island in style.

(HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC) — Enjoying a round of golf on one or more of Hilton Head Island’s 16 renowned area courses keeps getting easier.

Located at the southernmost tip of South Carolina about 20 minutes off I-95 — with gorgeous vistas of the Lowcountry’s natural beauty along the way — Hilton Head Island has always been a convenient drive destination for many from the North, South and Midwest.

Now, with new daily non-stop flights from major cities across the U.S., flying to Hilton Head Island is even more of a breeze.

For decades, two airports have serviced the southern neck of South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) is about 45 miles south of Hilton Head, just across the South Carolina-Georgia state line. The regional Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH), meanwhile, is mere minutes from all island resorts.

Centrally located mid-island, Hilton Head Island Airport allows visitors and residents to enjoy the luxuries of a "big city" airport without hassles such as traffic jams when looking for a parking space, mile-long hikes from a parking garage to the terminal and long lines at the ticket counter.

In 2018, Hilton Head Island Airport completed a $27.5 million expansion project, lengthening the runway from 4,300 feet to 5,000 and allowing larger jets to land.

Three major airlines are now servicing Hilton Head Island Airport with non-stop flights to and from more than a half-dozen hub cities, including:
American (3 daily flights to Charlotte and weekend service to Washington National)
Delta (3 daily flights to Atlanta starting May 23 and Saturday flights to New York LaGuardia starting June 8)
United (2 daily flights to Washington Dulles and weekend service to Chicago O’Hare and Newark)

Previously the only carrier flying onto Hilton Head Island, American Airlines began jet service immediately upon completion of the runway extension.

United Airlines recently began seasonal service in and out of the Hilton Head Island Airport to hub airports in Washington, D.C., Chicago and New York City. The airport held an official ribbon cutting and inaugural water cannon salute to the new flights.

United operates non-stop flights from Hilton Head to Washington Dulles International Airport two times a day; flights to Chicago O’Hare International Airport two times a week; and flights to New York/Newark Liberty International airport once per week.

Not to be outdone, Delta Air Lines announced it would be servicing Hilton Head Island Airport again. Starting May 23, Delta will run three daily flights between Hilton Head and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. On June 8, Delta will begin Saturday-only flights between Hilton Head and New York City’s LaGuardia Airport.

And, there are numerous additional flights into Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport with Allegiant Air, American, JetBlue, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United all offering flights from multiple gateways.

Hilton Head Island has earned its reputation as one of the world’s finest golf destinations, because of its award-winning public and resort courses.  The island is also home to the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage tournament held at the famed Harbour Town Golf Links. This event was voted the second favorite stop on the PGA Tour by its players.
