(Bellaire, MI) — The Legend, Shanty Creek’s masterpiece golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, is among four golf courses vying for the 2015 National Golf Course of the Year award.
Given annually since 2003 by the National Golf Course Owner’s Association, the award recognizes facilities that excel in four categories: course quality, quality of ownership and management, contributions to the community, and contributions to the game.
“We’re thrilled, and quite frankly, humbled to be among the finalists,” says Chris Hale, vice president of Shanty Creek Resorts. “To represent northern Michigan at the national level is an honor and something we are certainly proud of.”
The Legend GC in Bellaire is among four distinctly different golf courses operated by Shanty Creek. The Legend helped launch the northern Michigan region as a legitimate golf destination in the mid-1980s. Arnold Palmer predicted it would be popular for golfers of all abilities, not just low-handicapped players. His sentiment still rings true today as The Legend remains the most played of SCRs four courses.
The other finalists include Haggin Oaks (Sacremento, CA), Atkinson Resort & Country Club (Atkinson, NH), and Currahee Club (Toccoa, GA). The winner will be announced on February 25, 2015 in San Antonio, Texas at the NGCOA Annual Conference.
Shanty Creek was also recently named among the “Top Golf Resorts in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler (April, 2012). For more information about Shanty Creek’s four golf courses or to view 2015 golf packages, visit shantycreek.com.
