Former Olympian, NBA Coach Doug Collins to Join Feherty Monday at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel

Collins Reflects on a Career in Basketball, & Being on the Wrong End of the Controversial ‘72 Munich Olympics Gold Medal Game

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – A former Olympian, first overall pick in the draft, and a journeyman head coach in the NBA, current TV analyst Doug Collins joins Feherty to reflect on a life and career in basketball, Monday, August 1 at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. Feherty – the Emmy-nominated Sports TV personality – meanwhile is set to return to late night television this evening, where he’ll be a guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET. Feherty will join other guests appearing tonight, actor Matt Damon and musical guest Sturgill Simpson.

Among topics discussed over the course of the interview, Collins recounts having been on the losing end of the controversial 1972 Munich Summer Olympics gold medal game between the United States and the Soviet Union. Collins made two free throws in the final minute of the game to give the United States a one point lead. When officials botched the game clock in the closing seconds to give the Soviets two chances to take the lead, they converted a layup attempt that resulted in a one point win and the first-ever Olympic loss for the United States basketball team.

In speaking with Feherty, Collins reflects on the decision that he and his teammates made at the time to refuse to accept their silver medals in protest of the game’s contentious outcome. Other topics discussed include:
- His head coaching roles with the Chicago Bulls (1986-’89), Detroit Pistons (1995-’98); Washington Wizards (2001-’03) and Philadelphia 76ers (2010-’13)
- Reflecting on his years coaching the biggest icon in the sport’s history – Michael Jordan – as head coach of the Chicago Bulls
- Recollections of learning he had been drafted first overall to the 76ers in 1973, and how the draft has evolved in the decades since
- The influence of Illinois State head basketball coach Will Robinson on both Collins’ playing and coaching career
- Admiration for the young crop of PGA TOUR stars
- His injury-shortened playing career and stepping away from his playing days years before he had hoped to
