Golfweek, Golf Channel and S.C. Golf Course Rating Panel Heap Praise on Lowcountry Destination
(HILTON HEAD, S.C.) – Hilton Head Golf Island (HHGI) – featuring more than 30 courses on Hilton Head and Fripp Islands, as well as Bluffton, Beaufort and Jasper counties – is enjoying a banner year for rankings with accolades pouring in from Golfweek, Golf Advisor, the South Carolina Golf Course Rating Panel and the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO).
Golf Advisor, the online golf course rating service of The Golf Channel, lists seven of the state’s top 15 courses in the Hilton Head / Bluffton area including: Harbour Town Golf Links (The Sea Pines Resort); The Robert Trent Jones Course (Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort); Heron Point by Pete Dye (Sea Pines); Old South Golf Links; Hilton Head National; Cupp Course (Palmetto Hall); and Dolphin Head.
Harbour Town is No. 2 in Golfweek’s “Best: State-by-State You Can Play,” while the Robert Trent Jones Course ranks No. 9. The South Carolina Golf Course Rating Panel – inclusive of public, private and resort facilities – ranks Harbour Town No. 2 and Heron Point No. 47.
In late 2015, Hilton Head was also named the International Association of Golf Tour Operators’ Golf Destination of the Year for North America for 2016. In bestowing the award, IAGTO cited that “Hilton Head Island’s golf courses attract both amateur and professional golfers with certified lessons and renowned tournaments. The island’s subtropical climate and lush fairways attract golfers from around the world resulting in 700,000 rounds played annually.”
Featuring world-class courses, exceptional value, pleasant weather and direct flights from major cities, Hilton Head Island is one of the most accessible golf destinations on the East Coast. GOLF Magazine named it one of the “Top 10 Most Dreamed about U.S. Golf Destinations” in its inaugural “Golfers’ Choice Awards, and Golf Digest ranked it in seven of eight top categories for golf destinations.
“We appreciate the recognition from these respected media outlets and industry insiders, as their readers and constituents know their golf inside and out,” says Cary Corbitt, President of the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association and Vice President of Sports and Operations at Sea Pines Resort. “Our eclectic mix of courses, golf course architects, stunning Lowcountry setting and world-class dining makes this a golf destination unlike any other in North America.”
