Product Review: Chromax M1x and O.V.

At first blush, Chromax golf balls look like something from a disco-themed mini golf course. However, upon further review, the M1x Distance and O.V. (Optimal Visibility) styles pack a lot of punch.

So, what’s different about Chromax balls? A lot. First, a patented “inner-illumination” between a reflective inner layer and a translucent outer layer provides high visibility in all light conditions. Not only are these balls easier to spot on the ground, but also in flight.

Another big difference is the compression. Typical balls on the market today are 90 compression. That’s because they’re geared toward an average male with average swing speed (roughly 85-99 mph). The M1x and O.V., however, have a compression of 75. If you swing a little slower, you’ll want a lower-compression ball. Simply, the lower numbers are easier to compress, which results in greater distances for slower speeds.

Side note: You may wonder why someone who swings harder wouldn’t switch to a lower-compression ball if it, in fact, adds distance. In a word - control. Swing hard at a low-compression ball and you’ll find it harder to control. Bombers often struggle with accuracy to begin with. There’s no need to add in LESS control to the equation.

Disclaimer: I’m one of the average, male golfers who should play a 90-compression ball. So why would I - or others like me - consider a Chromax? I’ll give you two reasons, and they both have to do with the beginning of the season.
Much of the country is coming out of winter’s deep freeze. Play a harder-compression ball on a cool spring day and it’ll likely feel like hitting a rock. A 75-compression option will provide added flexibility coming off of the club.
Like most of us in the Northeast, I haven’t hit a ball in anger in more than three months. It would be wise to swing a little easier until I get my game back in shape. Assuming I can convince myself to swing easier and not let the excitement of actually playing golf again get in the way, a Chromax will give me back the yards I’ll lose.

Traditionalists will scoff at the idea of any colored golf balls, let alone one with a reflective inner layer and translucent outer layer, but Chromax is far from a gimmick. These balls have chops and may be exactly what your game is missing.
