(Scottsdale, Ariz.) — National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has awarded the Seven Desert Mountain clubhouse with the 2019 Best in American Living Platinum Award for best community facility.
The state-of-the-art, 8,900-square-foot clubhouse is a stunning sculpture of steel, stone, masonry, and pocketing glass. Set against a magnificent high desert backdrop with heated patio floors, 40-foot cantilevered hemlock overhangs with evaporative cooling, indoor-outdoor gastropub and bar areas, five fire pits, two fireplaces, and two bocce courts create a family-friendly community gathering place.
“These design features, such as the radiant patio heating and overhead misters, extend the Arizona shoulder seasons so our members may enjoy the clubhouse and golf course nearly year-round,” said Bill Brownlee of The M3 Companies LLC, the project’s developer.
Drewett Works was the architect/designer whose vision was executed by Newman Commercial Builders for developer The M3 Companies. Greey |Pickett served in the dual capacity of land planner and landscape architect/designer.
The clubhouse is intended for year-round enjoyment and is surrounded by the highly acclaimed No. 7 at Desert Mountain golf course. This USGA-rated, championship par-54, 18-hole course is the only one in the United States. The course was designed by Brownlee and Wendell Pickett of Greey|Pickett, both of whom are Desert Mountain Club members.
Hefty stone tablets were constructed using locally sourced field stone and antique-style grout, exposing aggregates within and providing an aged-in-place sense to the modernist building. To create a complementary material hierarchy and with the goal of appearing layered rather than modular, masonry head joints were brushed and bed joints were tooled. Interior designer Ownby Design specified warmly hued concrete floors, rich wood paneling, zinc countertops, and leather-wrapped handsets provide consistent elements of natural materials.
The Best in American Living Awards (BALA) is the nation's premier award program continually redefining design excellence for the entire residential building industry. It spotlights the most creative and innovative builders, remodelers, architects, developers, land planners and interior designers in the nation.
Judging is conducted by eight industry experts, including builders, architects, designers and land planners, from across the country. Among their comments about the Seven Desert Mountain Clubhouse were, “Beautiful, spectacular—so well done. The firepits are gorgeous.”
