While Asia has recently taken center stage in golf course development, Gary Player Design continues to build upon its impressive global portfolio as European projects push forward in Cyprus and Italy.
The Mediterranean island of Cyprus will soon feature the first ever Gary Player Signature Course as the Limni Golf Resort, located in the mountainous town of Polis on the northwest coast, has formally moved into the detailed design phase.
The Shacolas Group, the largest private commercial group in Cyprus, recently hosted a design workshop together with Gary Player Design and representatives of acclaimed architect Sir Norman Foster, who has been engaged to design residential and resort amenities.
The Limni Golf Resort will prove to be one of the most intriguing courses in the ever-expanding Gary Player Design portfolio. Built upon what was once an operating copper mine, the 800 meter-wide quarry crater has been filled with over eight million cubic meters of earth to make way for the championship course.
“We have nine holes of the course that will be woven through the area that was formerly the copper mine where there will still be about 30 meters of quarry walls exposed,” said Scott Ferrell, President of Gary Player Design. “The course landscape is sure to offer a unique and dramatic experience.”
Situated in the coastal hills, the site offers dramatic elevation changes that will not only add to the character of the championship course, but offer countless views of the Chrysochou Bay.
“This is one of the most unique and challenging sites that we have ever worked with, but I am confident that this is going to be one of the most special courses in our portfolio,” said Grand Slam champion Gary Player. “I am most excited to see the former ecological eyesore turned into a beautiful, green space for visitors and local golfers to enjoy.”
In addition to the Gary Player Signature Course, the resort will feature an 18-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus, high-end residential villas, a luxury boutique hotel, sports facilities, and wellness center. As the first and only Player-Nicklaus development in the whole of Europe, Limni Golf Resort will undoubtedly be in a class of its own.
From one stunning location to another, construction has now commenced on Gary Player Design’s newest Italian project, Manzano Golf Resort in Tuscany.
The Gary Player Design project will be the first golf resort in the Tuscan village of Cortona, Italy and will offer a true Tuscan experience with the course routing surrounded by vineyards among the rolling colorful landscape.
The Manzano Golf Resort will also feature a luxury, full-service boutique hotel for the discerning traveler.
The Manzano project will complement the existing Gary Player-designed courses in Italy, including at Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa, which hosted the 2011 Sicilian Open and was also recently named one of the top courses in the country. The firm also has future plans to design a new course at Is Molas, the popular resort in Sardinia, Italy.
