(Hilton Head Island, S.C.) - Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of all time, has long been known as the “Golden Bear” for his blond locks, hefty build, and ability to terrorize golf courses—at least in his prime.
It turns out Jack isn’t the only beast in golf’s menagerie and that the game is crawling with critters. This Friday—while the PGA Tour plays the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego, home of the world-famous San Diego Zoo — LINKS Magazine will debut its picks for the top-10 animal nicknames in the game.
Every week, the website of LINKS—the freshest and most exciting magazine in golf—presents an original top-10 list. Sometimes it chooses great courses, other times it’s great players or the best golf-vacation options at that moment. And then there are times when the editors can’t resist having some fun with the greatest game of all.
Among the other creatures joining the Golden Bear are “The Duck,” “Pink Panther,” “Hawk,” even “Shrek.” Don’t know who those are? LINKS Magazine’s editors will tell you who as well as why some of golf’s greatest players acquired their ferocious sobriquets.
“The 10 Best Animal Nicknames in Golf” list will appear exclusively on the LINKS Magazine website (linksmagazine.com). Also on the website are descriptions of more than 350 of the greatest golf courses in the world, profiles, travel features, equipment reviews, and much more, including the greatest photography that the game has to offer.
