Meadowbrook Country Club Raises $150,000 for Four Detroit Area Charities to Mark Its 100th Anniversary

(Northville, MI)—As part of its centennial year celebrations, Meadowbrook Country Club, one of suburban Detroit’s historic private golf clubs, launched an initiative to raise $100,000 by the date of its August gala party. The club believed that the best way to commemorate its 100th anniversary was to give back to others in the community, and to that end four area charities were selected for members to choose to support with donations.

So popular was the challenge that the goal of $100,000 was exceeded by almost $50,000.

The benefitting charities included:  CATCH, a children’s charity founded by the late Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson that seeks to improve the quality of life for pediatric patients; Bridgepointe, whose mission is to bring together kids from Detroit and the suburbs to provide enrichment and educational opportunities;  the Angela Hospice, a premier hospice care provider in southeast Michigan; and Main Street League, a volunteer organization of women that provides time, talent and financial resources for those in need.

“Meadowbrook Country Club is well-known in the community for its generosity, and I am pleased that in raising almost $150,000 for our four local charities we continued a remarkable tradition of giving,” said Meadowbrook Country Club president Joe Vig. “No one was pressured to contribute and our members are proud that we made this commitment as part of our centennial celebration.”

Meadowbrook also is one of the largest annual contributors to the Evans Scholars Foundation, which awards college scholarship grants to caddies. In 2015, Meadowbrook Country Club donated $152,500 to the Evans Scholars Foundation, which ranked them 9th in the nation. Former Meadowbrook caddie (and longtime club member) Walter Ickes was the club’s first Evans Scholarship recipient in 1955. Mr. Ickes was honored at the centennial gala event, as was Michigan native and one of the LPGA’s founders, Shirley Spork. Meadowbrook gave teaching legend Spork an honorary membership in 1947 which enabled her to compete in significant tournaments in Michigan and elsewhere. She is a member of the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame.
