El Macero Classic to Feature UC Davis Aggies

El Macero Country Club to Host Prestigious Golf Tournament on April 10-12

(El Macero, CA) – Some of the country’s finest college golf programs, including UC Davis will hit the fairways and greens at picturesque El Macero Country Club on April 10-12 for the El Macero Classic.

Along with the host Aggies, the El Macero Classic will feature squads from Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Sacramento, Fresno State, Grand Canyon University, Marquette, University of Nevada and Utah Valley University.

“This tournament consistently draws some of the better college golf teams in the country and we are once again fortunate to have a stellar field,” said Cy Williams, Head Men’s Golf Coach at UC Davis, who’s in his 20th year of coaching for the Aggies.

In early November, El Macero Country Club unveiled a $300,000 state-of-the-art practice facility that has been drawing rave reviews since its opening. Featuring two large putting greens, two deep bunkers outfitted with two types of grass – rye and bermuda, the practice facility will help players chip from varying surfaces.

“Our short game facility is spectacular and a lot of players are taking a more serious look at the UC Davis golf program because of it,” added Williams. “We have an impressive 2015 recruiting class committed and it’s in large part due to our short game facility.

The John and Diane Watson Short Game Training Center is a public-private partnership between UC Davis Athletics, El Macero Country Club and Troon Golf and was funded by alumni, families and friends of the UC Davis golf program. John Watson, currently the CEO of Chevron was a third team All American golfer at UC Davis in 1978 and a four-year letter winner on the team.

“We are so blessed to be able to call El Macero Country Club one of our home courses. It stands up with all of the best golf courses we play on the college tournament circuit,” said Williams. “The greens for last year’s El Macero Classic may have been the best greens we played on all year!”

Currently, the top ranked Big West Conference golf team, the Aggies are ranked 68th in GolfStat which puts UC Davis right on the “bubble” for an NCAA berth.

“We are truly excited about this year’s El Macero Classic. It will be our first major collegiate golf event showcasing our new short game facility and the overall condition of our golf course is simply remarkable. All of us associated with our Club take a great deal of pride in maintaining a golf course that is second to none in the area and we are anxious to show it off to golfers from other parts of California and beyond,” said David Knox, General Manager of El Macero Country Club.
