The Three Greatest Golf Movies Ever Made

By the time the credits roll, these films prove golf is anything but a quiet game.

Golf has a reputation problem. To outsiders, it’s slow, polite, maybe even a little sleepy. But Hollywood has spent decades trying to rewrite that narrative—and at its best, it’s succeeded. The greatest golf films don’t just capture the sport; they bottle its obsession, its absurdity, and its occasional magic.

Here are the three movies that define golf on screen—and why they still matter.

1. Caddyshack — Chaos Wins

If golf has a comedic soul, this is it.

Released in 1980, Caddyshack didn’t just poke fun at country club culture—it detonated it. The film is less about competition and more about class clashes, ego, and pure nonsense. Chevy Chase plays it cool, Rodney Dangerfield plays it loud, and Bill Murray… well, he plays it completely unhinged.

And yet, beneath the anarchy, there’s something true about golf here. The game has always been a social battleground as much as a sport. Status, money, belonging—it’s all in play before the first tee shot.

Four decades later, Caddyshack remains the most quoted golf movie ever made—and arguably the most influential.

2. Tin Cup — The Beauty of the Blow-Up

Where Caddyshack is chaos, Tin Cup is heartbreak.

Kevin Costner stars as Roy McAvoy, a gifted but self-destructive golfer chasing one last shot at greatness. Unlike most sports films, this one understands the quiet cruelty of golf—the way a single decision can define everything.

The film’s climax is legendary: a final-hole gamble that turns into a slow-motion unraveling. It’s not just drama; it’s psychology. Every golfer who’s ever refused to “lay up” sees themselves in that moment.

Tin Cup doesn’t just show golf—it understands why people can’t quit it.

3. Happy Gilmore — The Game Gets Loud

Golf had never seen anything like Happy Gilmore—and it hasn’t since.

Adam Sandler plays a failed hockey player who stumbles into golf with a slapshot swing and a short fuse. It’s ridiculous from the opening scene, but that’s the point. Happy Gilmore drags golf out of its quiet, buttoned-up world and injects it with chaos, noise, and attitude.

Purists rolled their eyes. Everyone else loved it.

More importantly, it brought new fans into the game—kids who didn’t see themselves in country clubs but suddenly saw golf as something they could crash.

Final Word

Together, these three films tell the full story of golf:

Caddyshack shows its absurdity

Tin Cup reveals its obsession

Happy Gilmore proves it can evolve

Golf may be played in silence—but on screen, it’s never been louder.

“Loopers: The Caddie’s Long Walk,” Narrated By Bill Murray, Debuts in U.S. Movie Theaters June 7

(CLEVELAND, OH) – “Loopers: The Caddie’s Long Walk” (www.loopersmovie.com, @loopersthemovie), the most thorough feature-length film documentary ever developed on golf’s historic caddie profession, will make its nationwide theatrical debut on June 7, with more than 75 locations across the United States.

The film, narrated by actor and former caddie Billy Murray, has drawn critical acclaim in early 2019 with positive reviews and best documentary awards from the Cleveland International Film Festival in early April and the Newport Beach (CA) Film Festival in early May. The film continues on the film festival circuit through the first week of June, with the Greenwich, CT, International Film Festival on June 2.

The “Loopers” U.S. theatrical release begins on Friday, June 7 – the week before the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach – and includes theaters in 25 states. A listing of locations, to be continually updated in the coming weeks, is included at https://www.loopersmovie.com/see-the-movie.

Reviews of the film have touted the film’s accuracy and interest beyond just golf:

“… wishing ‘Loopers’ could be a series with each vignette an episode. Better yet, with striking panoramics of St. Andrews, Pebble Beach, Bandon, Carnoustie and other world-renowned courses, “Loopers” is reminiscent of the BBC’s “Planet Earth” series, educating while aesthetically captivating.” – Golf Digest (March 2019)
“This weaves history with personality in telling a handful of specifically amazing golfer-caddie pairings, and is great even for those who hate golf.” – Santa Barbara Independent (January 30, 2019).
“I’ve only played a handful of rounds of golf in my life, and I don’t particularly care about the sport. Still, I found ‘Loopers: The Caddie’s Long Walk’ compelling. Any time you get somebody talking about their life’s work you’re probably going to get some good stories.” – Filmthreat.com (February 15, 2019).
“Loopers charts the history of golf from its origins in Scotland to modern times. Traditionally, the caddie’s mantra was to ‘show up, keep up and shut up.’ They were banned from the clubhouse and treated poorly. However, they became an important part of the sport, acting as the player’s technical adviser, psychologist and confidant.” – Sunday Times, Ireland (February 2, 2019).

The film also includes interviews with World Golf Hall of Famers Sir Nick Faldo, Tom Watson, Ben Crenshaw, Lee Trevino, Curtis Strange and former Masters Tournament and U.S. Open champion Fuzzy Zoeller. Professional caddies who participated include Steve Williams (Tiger Woods’ former caddie), Carl Jackson (Crenshaw), Fanny Sunesson (Faldo), Pete Bender (Greg Norman and others), Michael Greller (Jordan Spieth) and Jariah “Jerry” Beard (Zoeller at the 1979 Masters). Longtime golf journalists Rick Reilly, Michael Collins and Ward Clayton are also interviewed.

The unknown stories are revealed, such as Greg Puga, who grew up in East Los Angeles, went on to caddie at Los Angeles’ Bel-Air Country Club and qualified as an amateur to play in the Masters Tournament. Another is the compelling legacy of caddie master Mike Kiely, who has been the caddie organizer at historic Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland for a half-century and guided many caddies toward successful lives.

“Loopers” was filmed at some of the more iconic locations in golf such as the Augusta (GA) National Golf Club, Pebble Beach (CA) Golf Links, The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland, numerous other vaunted courses in Scotland and Ireland such as Carnoustie, Prestwick, Ballybunion and Lahinch and Bandon Dunes (OR).

“Loopers” is directed by Southern California filmmaker Jason Baffa, who has directed successful independent films on the global surfing sub-culture, including “Bella Vita,” “One California Day” and “Singlefin: Yellow.” Baffa’s first film on golf harkens back to his days growing up when he played golf with his father and uncle.

Also, private viewings for clubs or organizations can be made by going to www.loopersmovie.com/request-a-screening. An international debut in Europe is scheduled for mid-June.

Watch Award Winning Documentary about Women & Sports THE FOUNDERS

Available On Demand Everywhere – June 20

(Los Angeles) – Level 33 Entertainment and levelFILM, announce the On Demand & Digital release of the feature film THE FOUNDERS featuring rare archival footage, historical reenactments, and current day interviews with leading tour players and the four surviving founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association:  Marilynn Smith, Shirley Spork, Louise Suggs, and Marlene Bauer Vossler. Reenactments star Bella Lotz (Fox’s “Star”, The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries”, & One Last Thing), Parker Sack (Bobbi & Gill, Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors, and Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors), Bryn Vale (AMC’s “Red Band Society”, War Time Falcon, & I Am Cortona), and Caleb Messer. The film will be available via all On Demand & Digital platforms including Amazon Instant Video, iTunes Movies, iNDemand, Comcast Xfinity, DirecTV, Verizon, Frontier, Hoopla, Dish, Microsoft, Sony, Google Play, and Vudu.

In THE FOUNDERS, they were not supposed to be athletes. They were not supposed to get paid to play. They were not supposed to call the shots. But in 1950, 13 amateur women golfers battled society, finances and sometimes even each other to stake their claim to become professional sportswomen. Over time, these women would be recognized as true icons of sport and equality. This is the story of The Founders.

Official Trailer: https://vimeo.com/213155368

THE FOUNDERS chronicles the stories and impact of the founding 13 members of the Ladies Professional Golf Association as they fought to overcome incredible odds in 1940’s America to form the longest running women's sports organization in the world. Although fierce competitors in an intensely individual sport, The Founders worked as a team to shift the public's perception of what it meant to be a lady on the links. While their male counterparts drew adoring crowds and handsome purses for their athletic achievements, The Founders used money from their own pockets to stage tournaments in small, far-flung towns that questioned whether female golfers were even worth watching.

In the face of criticism, these women broke boundaries, set records and built a family. Today, the LPGA is the oldest continuing female professional sports organization in the United States, and through golf clinics, scholarship programs and thriving charitable foundations, The Founders still work to ensure that women have a lasting place on the green.

THE FOUNDERS was written and directed by Charlene Fisk and Carrie Schrader. THE FOUNDERS won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at the Atlanta Film Festival, Best Sports Documentary at the La Costa Film Festival, and Visionary Award at the Lake Champlain International Film Festival.

Roadside Attractions will release TOMMY’S HONOUR in theaters on April 14, 2017

(RELEASE) - Set against the early days of the sport and stunning landscape of Scotland, TOMMY’S HONOUR is based on the intimate and powerfully moving true story of the challenging relationship between “Old” Tom Morris (BAFTA winner Peter Mullan) and “Young” Tommy Morris (Jack Lowden, DUNKIRK, '71, DENIAL), the dynamic father-son team who ushered in the modern game of golf.

As their fame grew exponentially, Tom and Tommy, Scotland’s Golf Royalty, were touched by drama and personal tragedy. At first matching his father’s success, Tommy’s talent and fame grew to outshine his father’s accomplishments as founder of the Open Championship in 1860, his stellar playing record, and his reputation as the local caddie master, greenskeeper and club & ball maker. In contrast to his public persona, Tommy’s inner turmoil ultimately led him to rebel against the aristocracy who gave him opportunity, led by The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews chief Alexander Boothby (Sam Neill, JURASSIC PARK, THE PIANO), and the parents who shunned his passionate relationship with his girlfriend-then-wife Meg Drinnen (Ophelia Lovibond, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, MAN UP).

The film is directed by Jason Connery (THE PHILLY KID, 51, THE DEVIL’S TOMB). Pamela Marin and Kevin Cook wrote the screenplay, an adaptation from Cook's acclaimed book of the same name, which won the United States Golf Association's Book of the Year award in 2007. Keith Bank of KB Partners (HEAVEN IS A PLAYGROUND) serves as producer along with Bob Last of Holdings Ecosse (L’ILLUSIONISTE, SUNSET SONG), Jim Kreutzer of Wind Chill Media Group (JUST WRITE, LAST GREAT RIDE) and Tim Moore of Top Dawg Productions (SULLY, AMERICAN SNIPER, GRAN TORINO, INVICTUS). Tony award-winner Kenneth Whitney executive produces with Keith Bank. The film is rated PG and will be released theatrically on April 14 2017.

Stunning Night Golf Movie by Audemars Piguet

(Le Brassus, Vaud, Switzerland) – Ten professional golfers belonging to the Audemars Piguet family of brand ambassadors have become the Midnight Masters in this funky night time video. Darren Clarke, in full Captain mode, trains and leads what the Swiss watchmaker likes to refer to as its “Dream Team of Golf Ambassadors” - in order of appearance: Ian Poulter, Henrik Stenson, Bernd Wiesberger, Lee Westwood, the recently crowned Major Champion Danny Willett, Keegan Bradley, Byeong Hun An, Emiliano Grillo and Victor Dubuisson.

At night time, on a course artistically lit for this unique occasion, camaraderie and friendly challenges lead the way. The film captures humor and warmth from this exclusive group of golfers, before they take up a final putting challenge, all perfectly in line with Audemars Piguet’s motto “To Break The Rules, You Must First Master Them.”

Within each golfer beats the heart of a watchmaker. Self-control, meticulous time management, love of perfection: whether on a green or in the universe of Haute Horlogerie, it is always a question of precision and elegance, the beauty of both gesture and performance. In addition to the ten players featuring in “Midnight Masters,” Paul Dunne, Branden Grace, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Renato Paratore and Peter Uihlein complete the brand’s Dream Team.

A private screening of the Midnight Masters video took place on May 23rd during Audemars Piguet’s latest Golf Invitational, its first in London after New York, San Francisco and Dubai, in the presence of Danny Willett, Victor Dubuisson and Bernd Wiesberger. At the historic Walton Heath Golf Club, Sarah Stirk, golf expert and presenter on Sky Sports, challenged each ambassador during the morning clinic and entertained the esteemed guests coming from 15 different countries worldwide.

'DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend' DVD Released

(RELEASE) - The legacy of the prolific golf course architect Donald Ross has been brought to life in “DONALD ROSS: Discovering the Legend” a documentary film by Boston-based filmmaker Cob Carlson. The film is one hour and 55 minutes in length, and the DVD also contains 30 minutes of bonus scenes.

The second edition of the film has just been released and contains new graphic elements, and never seen before film footage and photos.

Donald Ross is the greatest golf course designer of all time. He is directly responsible for the creation of four hundred of the most splendid and challenging courses in the world. As the patron saint of golf course architecture, he is widely known for his beautiful, deceptively simple designs that harmonize with the surrounding environment. Ross turned golf course architecture into an art form.

The film, “Donald Ross: Discovering the Legend,” is about a man who left Scotland for America without enough money to buy his second meal, but who became one of the most respected and best paid individuals in all of sports. It features not only the great Ross courses that have hosted major championships, such as Pinehurst #2, Interlachen, Inverness, and Essex, but also lesser-known gems that are revered by their members for their playability and charm.

Viewers will see what the courses look like now, and what they looked like years ago. Clips from archival films, still photos, and architectural drawings are featured. Interviews with renowned golf course architects, professionals, writers, historians, course superintendents, and amateurs critically enrich the film, and explain why Ross’ classic designs have stood the test of time. Jack Nicklaus, Ben Crenshaw, Mike Davis, Tom Doak, Rees Jones, Peggy Kirk Bell, Brad Klein, Jim Dodson, and Kyle Franz all appear in the film.

The DVD retails for $20. It makes a wonderful Christmas gift.

Visit www.donaldrossfilm.com for more details, trailers, bonus film scenes, and ordering information.

'The Squeeze' to Premiere on Golf Channel Nov. 10 at 8 p.m.

Based on a True Story, New Golf Movie Showcases a Young Prodigy Caught in the Middle of High Stakes Gambling Matches

(ORLANDO, Fla.) - Golf's latest Hollywood foray, "The Squeeze", centers around a gifted young golfer who crosses paths with an obsessive gambler willing to resort to whatever means necessary to win a bet. Directed by former ABC Sports golf producer/director Terry Jastrow, the film will make its television premiere on Golf Channel, Nov. 10 at 8 p.m. ET (encore at 10 p.m.).

The movie is based on a true story and was written and directed by Jastrow, who produced or directed coverage of 62 major championships (U.S. Open, Open Championship, PGA Championship), and was a seven-time Emmy winner over the course of his 22-year career. For the movie, Jastrow made it a prerequisite to cast a lead character with a legitimate golf acumen in order to ensure an authentic storyline that golf-enthused viewers would take seriously. The cast features Christopher McDonald - known among golf circles for his memorable role playing Shooter McGavin in "Happy Gilmore" - who plays the cunning gambler, starring alongside Jeremy Sumpter - a scratch golfer - who plays the young golf prodigy.

Notable Industry Accolades for "The Squeeze"
- "I watched 'The Squeeze' with Barbara and really enjoyed it. It's a fun movie that tells an interesting story, and the golf elements are so real you actually believe it could happen." - Jack Nicklaus, 18-time major champion

- "'The Squeeze' is a wonderful golf movie because it's so authentic. It hooks you in the beginning and stays interesting and entertaining right to the end. I'm looking forward to seeing it again." - Phil Mickelson, five-time major champion

- "'The Squeeze' depicts actors who are truly believable as pro quality golfers. Jastrow's true understanding of the game (with 22 years directing sports) injects reality into the scenes with a stream of golf humor that golfers will find both familiar and believable. 'The Squeeze' is indeed an enjoyable adventure into golf and big time gambling." - Tom Watson, eight-time major champion

The film centers around Augie Baccas (Sumpter), a blossoming golf phenom from a rural town who gains the attention of the cynical gambler, Riverboat (McDonald), after winning a citywide championship by a stunning 15 shots and breaking the course record in the process. When Riverboat offers a cut of the winnings from the cross-country high stakes matches he's proposing to line up, Augie - with his family's financial and emotional strains squarely on his mind - reluctantly obliges, ignoring the cautionary advice from his longtime girlfriend Natalie (Jillian Murray). When the stakes get higher and higher, the unlikely tandem set off for Las Vegas for a $1 million match against a man with mob connections, leaving Augie with the ultimate conundrum, caught in "the squeeze" of how to escape from the hole he's dug himself into.

"The Squeeze" is Jastrow's feature film directorial debut, created from his screenplay based on a true story. Along with Jastrow, the movie was produced by George Parra, Anne Archer, Michael Doven, and Brian McCormack.

Movie Review - THE SQUEEZE

One perk of being a golf blogger is having the opportunity to test some of the latest equipment and share my thoughts. As a (high) single-digit handicapper, I can speak from the perspective of many golfers - as opposed to just reading results from the perfect swing of a robot.

A unique opportunity recently popped up - review an advance copy of the upcoming golf movie, THE SQUEEZE. While I’m far from a movie critic, I do watch a lot of movies. What could be better than pairing my love of golf with a love of movies?

Written and directed by Terry Jastrow, THE SQUEEZE stars Jeremy Sumpter (J.D. McCoy in Friday Night Lights), Christopher McDonald (Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore) and Michael Nouri (Nick Hurley in Flashdance).

Jastrow’s character, Augie Baccas, is very likable - loving son, good big brother and terrific friend - and seemingly content in his small town. McDonald’s Riverboat is the perfect fast-talking, somewhat slimy gambler to pique the interest of young Baccas. Nouri as Las Vegas gambler Jimmy Diamonds will make you think twice about crossing anyone on The Strip. He’s excellent.

A critical component of the movie, in my opinion, was the on-screen playing ability of Sumpter and his competitors. There were some sweet swings. I can forgive poor acting, but even good acting would be ruined by any lack of ability (think Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf, Noonan’s arch-nemesis D’Annunzio in Caddyshack or John Goodman as Babe Ruth to name a few). Jastrow’s swing made you believe he could be a golf phenom.

While I enjoyed the entire movie, the best part for me was the twist at the ending. Mix it with a little mystery and I’m hoping for a sequel.

Don’t take my word for it ... Jack Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Bob Costas, Jim Nantz and Al Michaels all enjoyed it, as well. That’s good company to keep.

THE SQUEEZE is released April 17 (Friday after The Masters). See it.

Groupon Offers Its First-Ever Digital Download Movie 'The Squeeze'

(LOS ANGELES) - Groupon, the global leader in online local commerce has entered new territory by offering its first-ever digital download movie, "The Squeeze."

The offer is available in two separate packages. Customers can either order the movie plus Tom Watson's "Lessons of a Lifetime" DVD set, the most popular golf instructional video ever, for $19.99 (a $47.95 value), or the movie plus a tee time in their area via EZ Link, America's largest tee time company, for $13.99 (a $28 value).

"We're very excited about partnering with Groupon," says Terry Jastrow, seven-time Emmy award winner and legendary sports producer who wrote and directed this highly anticipated film. "The movie business is forever looking for robust new distribution outlets. History informs us of the huge impact new technology has made on movie consumption...from theaters to television to video cassettes, DVDs, Video On Demand, etc. And now Groupon, with its large saturation of customers in North America, is offering a movie for the first time as a digital download. If this Groupon campaign with 'The Squeeze' works, it could create another huge marketplace for movies."

While Groupon has previously offered movie tickets to buy and use at the local cinema, this is the first time it's offering a first-run movie as digital download for the general public to buy and screen at home. "The Squeeze" -- an ARC Entertainment release -- is a caper about a humble young man from a small rural town who gets caught in between two notorious gamblers in high stakes golf matches until the stakes become life and death. It's sort of "The Sting" meets "Tin Cup" with a dollop of "Caddyshack". The film stars Jeremy Sumpter ("Friday Night Lights", "Peter Pan"), Christopher McDonald ("Happy Gilmore"), Katherine LaNasa ("The Campaign"), Jillian Murray ("Bad Ass"), Michael Nouri ("Taken Away"), and Jason Dohring ("Veronica Mars").

Groupon customers can look for this special offer April 16th in selected cities. There will be an even broader offering a few days later. Those not currently Groupon users can simply go to Groupon.com, follow the instructions, and become a member in 60 seconds or less. There is no obligation, just a first look at some of the best bargains imaginable.
