Independent Study Reveals Truth About Exercise on the Golf Course

Using an electric caddie or push cart is just as good for you as carrying clubs

(Gloucester, U.K.) – A new independent study has debunked the myth that carrying a golf bag for 18 holes provides a greater workout than using an electric caddie or push cart.

The study, led by Graeme Close, Professor of Human Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University, focused on 16 elite college golfers using three different modes of transporting their clubs around the course: carrying, using a push cart, and using a Stewart Golf Q Follow electric caddie.

Speaking on the study, Close said, “What I would really want to emphasize is don’t think you’re losing your health benefits by putting your clubs on an electric caddie. The benefit is coming from walking.”

Close, who heads up nutrition for the DP World Tour and is a Nutrition Consultant to both the European Ryder Cup Team and England Rugby Union, among others, also said, “In my role with the DP World Tour it is vital that elite golfers can efficiently fuel performance. This study is the first of its kind to accurately measure the physical effects of golf on the body.”

The study, published in the European Journal of Sports Sciences, was centered around comparing the Total Energy Expenditure (TEE) and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) of all three modes of transport, with findings showing there was no meaningful differences in calories burned/TEE during a round for all three modes. Close said, “By far the major contributor to the energy expenditure of golf is walking itself. The act of striking the ball or carrying the clubs is a much more minor contributor than walking.”

However, Close found significant differences when analyzing RPE, which in simple terms is a measure of how a person feels as opposed to their actual physical response. Carrying the bag had the highest RPE, meaning golfers felt like they were working much harder and burning more calories, even though they weren’t. The Stewart Q Follow electric caddie gave the lowest RPE and was also the only mode of transportation that participants found “very easy” when asked to rate the perceived level of exercise for each round.

“The perceived effort of the electric caddie was much lower, and I guess that makes sense because you know if you walk a course and you’re not having to actually think about either pushing a cart or carrying clubs then of course it feels easier and that’s what we measured in this study,” said Close.

The study also found that carrying produced the highest overall heart rate and heart rate fluctuation, a factor that could adversely affect match performance: Lining up a crucial putt with an increased heart rate is not an ideal scenario for most golfers.

The results of this study offer a fresh perspective. By debunking the myth of carrying versus using an electric caddie, this research shows that the real health benefits come from walking and not how the clubs are being transported. Golfers now have a scientifically backed approach to optimizing their experience on the course, enhancing their overall health, and ensuring peak performance.

GOLFFOREVER Launches Strategic Partnership with Invited

Leading golf fitness brand to provide education, tools, and training products to an esteemed network of golf clubs nationwide

(Aspen, Colorado) — GOLFFOREVER, the industry-leading at-home golf fitness training system that helps golfers play without limits, is pleased to announce it has partnered with Invited (the company formerly known as ClubCorp), the largest owner-operator of private clubs in the world with more than 200 golf, city, and stadium clubs across the country.

Invited will offer special access to the 4.9 App Store-rated GOLFFOREVER app and GOLFFOREVER training and recovery products, such as the GOLFFOREVER Swing Trainer, in 12 premier golf and country clubs before expanding into additional Invited clubs nationwide. These pilot clubs will also feature GOLFFOREVER warm-up and post-round recovery stations, as well as workout stations in their gyms. All will prominently feature the Swing Trainer, which pairs the first-ever multi-use golf fitness and warm-up tool with video-streaming routines for flexibility, speed, power, and recovery in the GOLFFOREVER app. Additionally, Invited teaching pros, club fitters, and trainers will integrate GOLFFOREVER into their lessons, fittings, and training sessions.

“We’re honored for this incredible opportunity to impact the fitness, performance, and longevity of Invited Club members on and off the golf course,” says Stacy Borkowski, GOLFFOREVER VP of Sales. “Invited clubs represent some of the most engaged golfers in the country, and our training system will raise their level of play and enjoyment of golf more than ever. Ultimately, in addition to helping improve members’ flexibility, power, and ability to stay pain-free, our alignment with Invited’s forward-thinking leadership is about improving lives, which is at the core of their mission and ours.”

GOLFFOREVER is the first golf-specific home training program to embrace the approach of home exercise equipment paired with streaming video instruction from the world’s leading experts in golf performance and pain relief. GOLFFOREVER customizes each golfer’s exercise routines specifically for them, based on a proprietary strength and flexibility test. It is safe and highly effective for any golfer.

The Invited-GOLFFOREVER relationship, in addition to two visionary businesses aligning philosophically, has an authentic connection that’s personally impacted Invited CEO, David Pillsbury. In recent weeks, Pillsbury was referred to GOLFFOREVER’s Director of Strategic Initiatives, Dr. Troy Van Biezen, for relief of sciatic pain, which he had unsuccessfully sought from several other sources. Van Biezen, who is also a PGA Tour performance coach and trainer to Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Ryan Palmer, and other professional athletes, quickly observed Pillsbury had pelvis misalignment, hip instability and limited hip and mid back rotation which was causing extreme stress on his low back and enough pain to affect his daily activities and sleep. So, he treated Pillsbury and encouraged the use of GOLFFOREVER to address the issue. To Pillsbury’s amazement, he was soon hitting balls at the range and sleeping completely pain-free.

“The fact that David was able to experience the benefits of our program firsthand has been a great way for Invited to envision just how much we can positively impact the lives of their membership,” Van Biezen says. “It’s exciting to think of how many more golfers we can help through this relationship. It doesn’t matter if you’re Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour or the average golfer looking for some extra yards and playing without pain. GOLFFOREVER helps your body turn and move more easily in your swing, and you’ll play better because of it.”

“GOLFFOREVER is truly a game-changer and has helped me immeasurably,” said Invited CEO David Pillsbury. “The mobile app is completely intuitive, and the exercise content is designed for on-the-go people who don’t have time to spend hours in the gym every day. We are excited to add GOLFFOREVER to our comprehensive health and wellness offering to help our members play better and more often.”

Scheffler, the 2021-22 PGA Tour Player of the Year who is one of over 100 PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, and LPGA Tour pros using GOLFFOREVER, started working with the groundbreaking Swing Trainer weeks before winning four PGA Tour events, including the Masters, which catapulted him to World No. 1. The Swing Trainer is a first-of-its-kind golf training tool that combines a patent-pending cord-driven asymmetrical training bar with an interchangeable D3 Swing Weighted heavy warmup club. Both uses are powered by hundreds of warm-up, flexibility, and strength-building routines in the GOLFFOREVER app.

“We’re proud to see Scottie Scheffler reach so many of his goals during his historic run on the PGA TOUR. He had one of the greatest seasons in modern golf history, and we’re very proud to have played a part in it,” said GOLFFOREVER founder and CEO Dr. Jeremy James. “Scottie’s impressive character and total commitment preparing his swing, mind and body for competition make him even more deserving of these incredible achievements. It’s a privilege to be affiliated with him and witness these great heights, which are only the beginning for this incredibly talented player.”

Scheffler, who ascended to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings in late March, has collected the first four victories of his professional career since he began regular use of GOLFFOREVER’s groundbreaking training system that pairs the first-ever multi-use golf fitness and warmup tool with video-streaming routines for flexibility, speed, power and injury recovery in the 4.8 App Store-rated GOLFFOREVER app.

His $14,046,910 million in 2021-22 on-course season earnings is the most ever collected by a single player in a PGA TOUR season. Between Official Money and bonus programs, Scheffler earned a total of $24,796,910. In addition to his four victories, Scheffler also finished runner-up four times and had 10 top-10s and 18 top 25s in this incredible run. He is the first golfer to ever to be named Player of the Year on the Korn Ferry Tour, PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year and win the Jack Nicklaus Award as PGA TOUR Player of the Year.

“It’s been an unbelievable ride this year and part of my success is no doubt due to the hard work I’ve put in with GOLFFOREVER. It’s a tool and approach that is critical to my preparation for the PGA Tour, and I respect GOLFFOREVER’s mission of helping all golfers improve their bodies and play their best with the same scientific approach as mine. I’m proud to be their ambassador and appreciate the great relationship,” Scheffler said.

SCHEFFLER’S COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

GOLFFOREVER is the first golf-specific home training program to embrace the approach of home exercise equipment paired with streaming instruction. GOLFFOREVER customizes each golfer’s exercise routines specifically for them, based on a proprietary strength and flexibility test. GOLFFOREVER is safe and highly effective for any golfer.

Dr. Van Biezen, a marquee instructor within the GOLFFOREVER platform, has worked with top players on the PGA Tour for the past 20 years like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, GOLFFOREVER ambassador Ryan Palmer and Zach Johnson. He introduced Scheffler to the GOLFFOREVER product during its soft-launch in November, and the pair have since developed a variety of pre-round warmups, flexibility routines and strength workouts that Scheffler follows religiously, including during the week of his three-stroke victory at Augusta National.

Now, they’ll get a closer look at the breakthrough golf fitness process that has helped him achieve great heights on the PGA TOUR in 2022, including his four victories and record-breaking prize earnings for a single season (just shy of $13 million).

GOLFFOREVER’s groundbreaking training system pairs the first-ever, multi-use golf fitness and warm-up tool, the GOLFFOREVER Swing Trainer, with video streaming routines for flexibility, speed, power and injury recovery in the GOLFFOREVER app. Scheffler appears in GOLFFOREVER exercise and stretching videos on the app, using the GOLFFOREVER Training System in a similar capacity to how he uses it in his own daily routines.

“I never really thought I was that good at golf, so I just kept trying to improve,” Scheffler says in a GOLFFOREVER 30-second ad spot. “When you're able to have a workout routine and gradually build up to where you're training your body to move properly, you're going to get a lot of big dividends on the golf course. You'll have mobility in your hips (and) more mobility in your spine. And, when you go out to hit golf balls, you'll feel more fluid and, all of a sudden, you're going to see a few more yards and distance off the
tee, as well. For me, GOLFFOREVER is something that's worked, and I'm going to continue to do it because I've seen the real benefits.”

Scheffler has worked closely over the past decade with key GOLFFOREVER contributor Dr. Troy Van Biezen – a top PGA Tour chiropractor and fitness expert. The ad spots were filmed at Van Biezen’s Chirosport Specialists of Dallas training facility. Van Biezen is a marquee instructor within the GOLFFOREVER app and for the past 20 years has worked with top PGA Tour players like Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas and Zach Johnson. He introduced Scheffler to GOLFFOREVER during its soft-launch in November, and the pair have since developed a variety of pre-round warm-ups, flexibility routines and strength workouts that Scheffler follows religiously, including during the weeks of his three-stroke victory at The Masters and the U.S. Open, where he tied for second.

“We’re overjoyed at the epic success Scottie continues to have during this historic season,” says GOLFFOREVER founder and CEO Dr. Jeremy James. “His impressive character and total commitment to preparing his swing, mind and body for competition make him all the more deserving of these incredible achievements. It’s a privilege to be represented by him and witness these great heights in his blooming career.”

The 25-year-old Scheffler joins four-time PGA Tour winner Ryan Palmer and GOLFFOREVER’s original PGA Tour ambassador Justin Leonard, who makes his PGA Tour Champions debut next week at the Bridgestone SENIOR PLAYERS at Firestone Country Club in Akron – illustrating the versatility of GOLFFOREVER products that can help golfers of any age or skill level.

Watch for the GOLFFOREVER 30- and 60-second commercials featuring Scheffler over the next several weeks, throughout golf and sports programming on an array of national networks. You may also view Scheffler’s “Winning Championship Warmup Routine” on GOLFFOREVER’S YouTube Channel.

GOLFFOREVER Signs PGA TOUR Veteran Pro Ryan Palmer as Brand Ambassador

Four-Time winner joins Masters champ Scottie Scheffler and Hall of Famer Justin Leonard

(Aspen, CO) – GOLFFOREVER – the leading at-home golf fitness training system that helps golfers play without limits – has signed 18-year PGA TOUR veteran Ryan Palmer as its newest brand ambassador.

The four-time winner on the PGA TOUR, who has been using GOLFFOREVER since last year to optimize his performance and stay injury free, will appear in fitness training videos in the GOLFFOREVER app and in advertising videos and materials for the brand. He and GOLFFOREVER spokesman Scottie Scheffler are close friends who frequently train together under the guidance of key GOLFFOREVER contributor Dr. Troy Van Biezen.

While the World No. 1 Scheffler inspires golfers to strive for peak fitness and maximum gains, the 45-year-old Palmer brings the story of having overcome injury and using GOLFFOREVER to extend the time table of his success on the PGA TOUR. Most golfers older than 40 understand the frustration of playing with pain and limitations. Palmer speaks directly to those who want to play pain-free and increase mobility they might not have realized they were capable of achieving. Whether it's gaining 10 extra yards or finishing rounds with more stamina and no pain, Palmer resonates with aging golfers who want to play the game comfortably and successfully for many years to come.

“GOLFFOREVER is a platform that I truly believe in and use on a regular basis,” says Palmer. “My workouts with the GOLFFOREVER Swing Trainer have been an integral part of my tournament preparation and my day-to-day fitness routine. At 45, I feel as good as I've ever felt swinging a club since I started using this system and I’ve even gained clubhead speed. I hope to serve as an example for all golfers that, just because you’re getting older, it doesn’t mean your golf game has to decline.”

The GOLFFOREVER team will shoot new member content with Palmer this summer around flexibility, mobility, core strength and recovery, targeting key routines for golfers of any age and skill level.

“Ryan is one of the most down-to-earth and relatable personalities on the PGA TOUR, and we're excited to have him be a part of the GOLFFOREVER family,” says GOLFFOREVER founder Dr. Jeremy James. “His longevity and sustained success on Tour, as well as his full-out commitment to training his body for the long haul in his professional career, is amazing. He’s going to help us inspire a lot of over-40 golfers who need to believe their path to pain-free golf, better balance, flexibility, power and, even a few more yards off the tee, is attainable with the right fitness plan.”

GOLFFOREVER’s groundbreaking training system pairs the first-ever multi-use golf fitness and warmup tool with video-streaming routines for flexibility, speed, power and injury recovery in the GOLFFOREVER app. The GOLFFOREVER Swing Trainer, a key component of the GOLFFOREVER Training System, combines asymmetrical bar training with an optimized weighted warmup club and expert instruction in the app from top PGA Tour trainers, doctors and physical therapists.

'Iona Investigates' Golf's Health Benefits in New Video Series

(St Andrews, Scotland) — Golf’s widespread physical, mental and social health benefits have been brought to life in a new video series from The R&A in which broadcaster and presenter Iona Stephen uncovers how playing the sport can help you become fitter, healthier and happier.

Iona Stephen
At a time when record numbers are now playing golf worldwide, ‘Iona Investigates’ is a three-part series where Stephen learns how people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds are reaping the rewards of playing the sport.

Stephen speaks with famous faces from other sports – including former Liverpool and Republic of Ireland footballer Jason McAteer and ex-England cricket international James Taylor – leading medical professionals, fitness instructors and club golfers to understand how golf improves general fitness, eases stress and anxiety, and offers social interaction.

The first episode covers mental health and well-being, the second on physical health, and a final show on strength and balance.

“Working on this series has been a hugely rewarding experience,” said Stephen. “I’ve discovered more about golf’s wonderful health benefits and helped to highlight them by speaking to people from many different backgrounds.

“When I’m playing golf I feel uncomplicated, it’s like your mind is focusing on one objective – to get the ball from A to B. That focus brings you into a place of mindfulness and flow, where there isn’t space for the complications and pressures in our daily lives.

“Golf is for people who are busy working, who have young children, and for those who have retired with more time on their hands. Golf is for absolutely everyone, young and old, and wherever they are from and whatever they do.”

Former footballer McAteer has been instrumental in talking about mental health, especially for young people, and he outlines how he has used golf for his own benefit in recovering from depression.

McAteer, who has been playing golf for around 12 years, says, “Golf has been amazing, certainly from a mental health aspect. I was probably in a bad place when I finished playing football. It left a massive void and my mental health spiraled out of control. I was having a difficult time and I found golf. Golf probably saved my life.”

Taylor’s thriving cricket career was sadly cut short by a life-changing heart condition aged just 26 in 2016, but he also reveals how golf has since benefitted his physical and mental health.

“To have to retire when you are at the top of the game was incredibly hard to take – my life changed forever,” he admits. “The doctor in hospital told me I couldn’t exercise like I used to, but I could play golf. As soon as I took it up I was hooked, what a sport it is. Golf from then changed my life. It gave me a purpose, a technical challenge, the mental stimulation, the exercise and allows me to be competitive.”

St Andrews-based Stephen also tells her own story of coming late into golf and how the sport started to have a positive impact on her life after discovering Ranfurly Castle Golf Club when a student at The University of Glasgow.

In recent years, The R&A has strived to communicate golf’s health benefits to a global audience and underline the role the sport plays in health and social well-being.

Working with organizations such as the World Health Organization, the DP World Tour, other golf bodies and respected medical professionals such as Dr Andrew Murray, The R&A has been involved in various scientific research studies to make the sport more appealing to all.

Research has revealed that, on average, golfers live five years longer than non-golfers while golf, as a physical activity, can help prevent and treat 40 major chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, breast and colon cancer, depression and dementia.

Speeding Up Play Can Lead to a Longer Life

(RELEASE)
— Do you want to speed up the pace of play and add years to your life? Well, researchers at the University of Leicester have found the perfect combination that allows golfers to do just that!

In a study of over 400,000 adult U.K. participants, researchers found that “…as little as 10 minutes of brisk walking a day is associated with longer life expectancy, and that brisk walkers have up to 20 years’ greater life expectancy compared to slow walkers.”

Rick Oldach, U.S. CEO of European push cart market leader BIG MAX spearheaded the brand’s global Walk, Play Golf campaign. With the publication of this research Rick is excited to see evidence of the campaign’s aims, plus the additional benefit to pace of play. He said, “There’s a growing bank of evidence showing that playing golf, and particularly walking the course, has a positive impact on physical, social and mental health. But to see that brisk walking between shots can add so significantly to a golfer’s life expectancy and speed up play, is a double win for the game.”

The study looked at the relationship between walking pace and Leucocyte Telomere length – an indicator of biological age. The build-up of these senescent cells is believed to contribute to a range of symptoms we associate with aging, such as frailty and age-related diseases.

Tom Yates, the Senior Author and Professor of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Health at the University of Leicester and NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre, wrote, “Whilst we have previously shown that walking pace is a very strong predictor of health status, we have not been able to confirm that adopting a brisk walking pace actually causes better health. In this study we used information contained in people’s genetic profile to show that a faster walking pace is indeed likely to lead to a younger biological age as measured by telomeres.”

“BIG MAX has long argued that walking the course is beneficial to health, social interaction and performance,” concludes Oldach. “That we can now officially add life expectancy to the list can only be a fantastic thing for getting more people walking the course and improving the pace of the game.”

Neuropeak Pro Launches Precision Breathing Platform Used Backed by Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau

Precision Breathing and Heart Rate Variability Training Traditionally Reserved for Elite Athletes Now Available for Anyone Seeking to Improve Performance Under Pressure

(GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.) – Neuropeak Pro, a Precision Breathing, Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and brain performance company that trains elite athletes to enhance performance under pressure, introduced today the first-of-its-kind mobile, real-time precision breathing training device and performance app designed to unlock optimum performance.

Wearable “trackers” are everywhere. Neuropeak Pro’s NTEL BELT is different. It’s a real-time training device designed to align diaphragm-based performance breathing and HRV. Each training session is scored, enabling users to track their performance gains through the App. The wearable Bluetooth device (MSRP $399) is positioned around the torso, while the app and instructional videos guide users through training sessions designed to optimize an individual’s ability to respond to stress and unlock “zone-like” performance potential.

“Neuropeak Pro has helped me understand my breathing and brain performance on a level I never thought possible,” said 8-time PGA TOUR winner Bryson DeChambeau. “Along with my physical training, Precision Breathing and brain performance training have been a key reason for my continued success on the course.”

PGA TOUR stars like DeChambeau and Jordan Spieth along with Pro Bowl Quarterback Kirk Cousins are among an expansive list of professional and amateur athletes adding Neuropeak Pro’s Precision Breathing training to their workout regimens.

“For the past two decades athletes have transformed the way they eat and train physically. Unlocking the ability to function optimally while under pressure is the next great advancement in athletic training and performance,” said Rick Kuiper, CEO of Neuropeak Pro. “Our clients have the same commitment to Precision Breathing, heart rate variability, and brain performance training as they do to physical training and healthy eating.”

The device, mobile app for iOS and Android, and accompanying video content from Director of Golf Performance and former professional golfer Andy Matthews, work together to train the user to better manage stress and help achieve optimal performance under pressure.

Precision Breathing and HRV training improves performance with a “bottom up” approach that syncs the rhythm of the user’s heart with their breathing structure. The approach is backed by scientific evidence which demonstrates a connection between intentional breathing practices and management of the Autonomic Nervous System, your body’s “fight-or-flight” and “rest-and-recovery” responses.

“For years, our clients have carried a cumbersome briefcase filled with overcomplicated training equipment so they can train their breathing and heart rate variability while on the road,” said Matthews. “Now the foundational elements of our tour-proven training can be achieved with a streamlined chest strap, sensor and the mobile app. We have taken 15 years of training experience and scientific insights and condensed them into a wearable training device available to everyone.”

For more information on Neuropeak Pro, please visit Neuropeakpro.com. For the latest updates please follow us @neuropeakpro on Twitter, @neuropeakpro on Instagram and /neuropeakpro on Facebook.
