(RELEASE) - Kiradech Aphibarnrat continued his stellar play of late, shooting a final round 65 at the WGC Mexico Championship to finish in a tie for fifth. Playing alongside three-time major winner Jordan Spieth, Kiradech surged up the leaderboard on Sunday, making six birdies in 14 holes to briefly threaten the leaders. An untimely dropped shot at the 16th forced him out of contention, but he recovered with a birdie at the 72nd hole to record his highest ever finish in a WGC event.
Aphibarnrat, who recently claimed the World Super 6s Perth title on the European Tour, was happy with the result but felt a cold putter on Saturday left him too far behind. "I was very proud with the way I'm playing and finishing top-five in the World Golf Championships is always the best. On Saturday, I didn't hole a putt, it just kicked me out of position. I played great golf today but was a little bit behind, a little bit too far." The result moves Aphibarnrat to a career-best 36th in the world, and up to fifth in the Race to Dubai standings behind fellow Fenix XCell ambassador, Shubhankar Sharma.
Sunday in Mexico was a very different story for 21-year old Sharma, who had announced himself to the world over the first three days with some flawless golf in his first ever WGC appearance. Holding onto a two-shot lead overnight, the young Indian cut a frustrated figure at Club de Golf Chapultepec as the chasing pack swiftly reeled him in. Having ridden a hot putter and exemplary short game over the first 54 holes, the putts failed to drop on Sunday as he was overtaken by playing partner and eventual winner, Phil Mickelson.
Despite falling to a tie for ninth with a round of 74, Sharma remains at the top of the Race to Dubai standings having already won twice this season on the European Tour. Like Aphibarnrat, he also moves to a career-high world ranking of 66, just outside the top-50 that is required for an invitation to the Masters next month.
