Sectional Qualifiers to be Held at 34 Sites in 26 States Between May 21-June 11
(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – The United States Golf Association announced sectional qualifying sites for the 39th U.S. Senior Open Championship, to be held at The Broadmoor Golf Club’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28-July 1. The Broadmoor is hosting its second U.S. Senior Open and its eighth USGA championship.
Conducted over 18 holes, sectional qualifying will be held at 34 sites across the United States between May 21 and June 11. Online entry applications are available now and continue through Wednesday, May 16, at 5 p.m. EDT (www.usga.org/champs/apply).
“We are pleased to return to The Broadmoor, on the occasion of the club’s centennial, to conduct senior golf’s most prestigious championship and award the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy to the champion,” said Stuart Francis, USGA Championship Committee chairman. “The support of Allied Golf Associations allows sectional qualifying to be held across the nation and is important to the championship’s success.”
The Broadmoor’s East Course, which opened for play in 1918, will also host Colorado’s sectional qualifier for this championship on Monday, May 28. This is the fourth time in U.S. Senior Open history that the championship course will also serve as a sectional site. Oak Hill Country Club, in Rochester, N.Y., hosted in 1984 and Scioto Country Club, in Columbus, Ohio, was a site in 1986 and 2016. Eduardo Romero, of Argentina, won the 2008 U.S. Senior Open at The Broadmoor, and the East Course has previously hosted the championship’s sectional qualifying three times.
The Warren Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind., the site of the 2019 U.S. Senior Open Championship, will serve as a sectional qualifying site for a second time on Monday, June 4. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, the Warren Golf Course is on the campus of the University of Notre Dame and will be the first college course to host a U.S. Senior Open.
Sectional qualifying for the U.S. Senior Open will be held on The Omni Homestead Resort’s Cascades Course, in Hot Springs, Va., for the 15th time in 2018. The club is the site of eight USGA championships, including the 1967 U.S. Women’s Open and 1988 U.S. Amateur. Sam Snead, a four-time U.S. Open runner-up, was The Homestead’s golf professional for nearly six decades.
Waverley Country Club, in Portland, Ore., is hosting Senior Open sectional qualifying for the ninth time. The club hosted the 2017 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur, its eighth USGA championship. Waverley was the site of the 1970 U.S. Amateur, won by Lanny Wadkins, and the 1993 U.S. Junior Amateur, won by Tiger Woods.
Waialae Country Club, in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Dallas Athletic Club were among sectional qualifying sites for the first U.S. Senior Open in 1980. Waialae, which will host a sectional for the 13th time, has been the site of the PGA Tour’s Sony Open for 53 years. Dallas Athletic Club’s Blue Course will host sectional qualifying for a fifth time.
Additionally, five other clubs have a long history of hosting U.S. Senior Open sectional qualifying. Quail Ridge Country Club, in Boynton Beach, Fla., is a host site for the 15th time. Diablo (Calif.) Country Club and Hillwood Country Club, in Nashville, Tenn., are hosting for the 12th and ninth times, respectively. Crystalaire Country Club, in Llano, Calif., and Fairbanks Ranch Country Club, in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., are both sectional sites for the seventh time.
California has the most sectional sites with five. Three sectional qualifiers are scheduled in Florida, while Texas and Pennsylvania will host two qualifiers. There are qualifying sites in 26 states.
Don Pooley (2002) is the lone player to win the U.S. Senior Open after qualifying through sectional play. Last year, 14 players who advanced through sectional qualifying made the 36-hole cut in the Senior Open at Salem Country Club, in Peabody, Mass. Glen Day was the top finisher from that group when he placed sixth behind champion Kenny Perry with a 72-hole score of 6-under-par 274. Day was a co-medalist (69) in sectional qualifying.
The 2018 U.S. Senior Open will be the 32nd USGA championship contested in Colorado. To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 3.4, or be a professional, and be 50 years of age at the start of championship play.
