(RELEASE) - The PGA Tour extended its stay in California this week, making the short trip down the coast to Los Angeles for the Northern Trust Open. Famed Riviera Country Club played host for the 53rd time. Voted "best course on TOUR" by players in a 2015 Golf.com poll, the 7,322-yard par-71 George C. Thomas design is definitely a shotmakers' playground, requiring players to use every club in the bag as they shape and flight shots to challenge Riviera's elusive pins.
Titleist golf ball loyalist Bubba Watson (Pro V1x), who won this tournament in 2014, won it again this year with a two-putt par on the 72nd hole.
Just how challenging is Riviera? Consider this: the tournament record at Riviera is 20-under-par, a mark that has stood for 31 years. Last year's winner John Hahn was asked if this would be the year that the record is eclipsed.
"Assuming that the weather cooperates with us, you're going to see some good scores out there."
After a brief pause, Hahn added, "I think 20's pushing it. I don't think 20-under is going to be touched for a long time."
BY THE NUMBERS
A total of 94 players trusted a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success at the Northern Trust Open, more than six times the nearest competitor with 15 and more than all competitors combined.
Titleist is also the top choice in hybrids (20) and tied for first in the irons (42) category. Vokey Design Wedges topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (176) category and Scotty Cameron putters were the top choice in the putter (65) category.
