Golf Legend Gary Player Hosts Clinic and Plays Inaugural Round
(Greenville, SC) – The Cliffs, a collection of seven communities spanning from Greenville, SC to Asheville, NC, celebrated the September 27th Grand Opening of The Cliffs at Mountain Park Golf Course with more than 600 members and guests in attendance. Course designer and nine-time Major champion Gary Player hosted a morning clinic and grand opening tournament for members of Mountain Park as part of the opening festivities.
“We are thrilled to unveil the Mountain Park course,” said Gary Player. “I am confident its unique character will be well received. It is a stunning setting, and we are extremely pleased with the course from a design perspective.”
One of only a handful of courses opening in North America in 2013, The Cliffs at Mountain Park features an 18-hole championship layout tucked into a stunning wooded valley along the North Saluda River in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Cliffs invested $7.5 million to complete the course, which also includes the Mountain Park Golf Cabin and a multi-purpose facility designed for both cart storage and as a venue for informal events.
“Our purpose with Mountain Park was to create a golf experience that offers a wide range of playing scenarios unique to The Cliffs’ compendium of world-class courses,” said Scott Ferrell, President of Gary Player Design. “Members and guests will experience an environmentally friendly landscape, with native grasses incorporated to create a 'links' feel. Players of all skill levels will have a wonderful array of shot options, particularly around the greens.”
The course is highlighted by two main water features: a 12-acre lake that runs along holes 11 and 12, and the North Saluda River, which plays into the design of eight holes. The 7218-yard layout offers a variety of playing scenarios along its wide fairways, including playable native landscapes, large, gently contoured greens and generous collection areas. An additional attribute to The Cliffs at Mountain Park Golf Course is the border of towering trees, which provide a scenic backdrop, rich color and natural texture. Due to short distances between the greens and tee boxes, Mountain Park offers exceptional walkability, appealing to golf purists.
“The Cliffs provides one of the most extensive golf offerings in the country and the Mountain Park Golf Course is the perfect complement to our diverse portfolio of championship courses,” said Brian Peeples, Director of Golf for The Cliffs Clubs.
The Cliffs at Mountain Park Golf Course joins the other six championship golf courses, as well as clubhouses, state-of-the-art wellness centers, hiking trails, tennis courts, an equestrian center, beach club, marina and selection of restaurants that attract members from across the United States to enjoy the unique lifestyle at The Cliffs.
