(Williamsburg, Va.) – David Newsom, PGA Director of Instruction at River Creek Club in Leesburg, Va., is the Day 1 leader of the 2013 Middle Atlantic PGA Professional Championship at Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club. Newsom started his first round on the par 72 Green Course with birdies on holes #1 and #2 and continued on that birdie train for the rest of the round. With birdies on holes #4 and #6, Newsom finished the front nine at 4-under par. He added three more birdies on the back nine at #13, #15 and #17 to complete his bogey-free round at 7-under par.

Not far behind Newsom is Dirk Shultz, PGA Head Professional at Beaver Creek Country Club in Hagerstown, Md. who shot a 5-under par 66 on the Golden Horseshoe’s Green course. Schultz is coming off a win at the Holden Cup Invitational and a third place finish in the Maryland Open.

Held at Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, the MAPGA Professional Championship is the premier event of the MAPGA and is a 54-hole stroke play competition.
