Sweetgrass Golf Club Highlights Michigan's 2008 Season

The 2008 golf season was highlighted by the introduction of Michigan’s most-anticipated golf course – Sweetgrass Golf Club at the Island Resort & Casino.

Set amongst the pristine landscape of the Upper Peninsula, Sweetgrass is owned and operated by the Hannahville Indian Community, a band of the Potawatomi Nation. The wind-swept fairways are lined with flowing fescues and the namesake herb sweetgrass – an aromatic, sacred plant used in Indian peace and healing rituals can be found throughout the property.

The Paul Albanese design stretches to 7,300 yards from the tips and challenges the top golfers from the back tees, while four forward tee boxes are in place to accommodate any level of golfer. Albanese drew inspiration from the tribe's heritage and incorporated it into the championship course’s design. From bunkers named after tribal elders to areas reminiscent of long-forgotten fortress ruins, Sweetgrass offers legend and inspiration on every hole.

Known as the Keepers of the Fire, the Tribe also honors legend by featuring a fire pit next to the 10th tee box. An island green – which jibed with the resort's name and fit within the parameters of the land's dictated design – also meshes with Potawatomi legend, which holds the turtle and its wisdom in high esteem. The challenging par-3 island green is surrounded by a bed of rock outcroppings and resembles the renowned creature.

In addition, a pair of majestic waterfalls split the fairways of the ninth and 18th holes, bringing the round of golf to a breathtaking close and providing ample fodder for discussion, whether stopping at the turn for a refreshment or reminiscing over a gaming table in the resort’s Island Casino.

Off the golf course, the resort recently unveiled its Palm Tower, which adds 162 spacious, well-appointed rooms and luxurious penthouse suites to the existing Sun Tower's 113 rooms. When complete, the Palm Tower will boast 210 rooms, bringing the resort's total to more than 320.

The addition is part of a multi-million-dollar expansion project at the Island Resort & Casino. Also new to the resort is the 1,327-seat Island Showroom which has hosted such national acts as the Blues Brothers, Martina McBride, 3 Doors Down and Gretchen Wilson.

Discerning, Experienced Golfers Rave about Longaberger Golf Club

Acclaimed Arthur Hills Design Collects Praise from Ohio’s Golf Magazine Readers
(NASHPORT, Ohio) – A recent Ohio’s Golf Magazine poll asked readers and area residents to pick their favorite golf course in the Buckeye State and in resounding fashion Longaberger Golf Club led the way.

The poll asked readers to "pick your favorite Ohio golf course” from a list that included 15 of the state’s best public access golf courses. Longaberger commanded 38 percent of the more than 1.200 votes, leaving 62 percent to be shared by the other 14 courses (an average of 4.5 percent per course).

The poll is a precursor to the new golf course ranking system to be unveiled by Ohio's Golf Magazine in the January 2009 issue. The rating system will use Buckeye icons and will bestow anywhere from two to five Buckeyes per course.

This “best-of” poll continues a tradition of honors for Longaberger Golf Club and is particularly special because it comes from those who routinely play the state’s finest golf courses.

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Celebrates Soft Opening

(MAUNA KEA RESORT, Hawaii) - The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel celebrated a soft opening marking the return of the Laurance Rockefeller-built beachfront hotel and one of the world's most revered resorts on the Big Island's Kohala Coast.

Two years after being forced to close due to earthquake damage, The Mauna Kea reopened with a traditional Hawaiian blessing and welcomed its first guests to experience a multi-million dollar investment in redesigned, spacious guest rooms, new restaurants, a new spa, and an extensive makeover of the legendary golf course complete with a new clubhouse.

The flagship property of the Prince Hotels and Resorts international portfolio, Mauna Kea will have its "official" Grand Opening in March.

"The soft opening serves as a final staff dress rehearsal and an opportunity to ensure that everything is working before we really go out there and celebrate," said Takahashi.
General Manager Jon Gersonde added that the excitement among employees is palpable. "We are welcoming back many old friends who loved coming here each year. This weekend will be like a homecoming as they become reacquainted with the hotel and greet the many former workers who have also returned. Many long-time employees jumped at the opportunity to come back to Mauna Kea, so the reopening has the feel of a family reunion," said Gersonde.

The hotel's classic exterior architecture design remains the same as before, with the most dramatic changes taking place inside the guestrooms. The total room and suite count has been reduced from 310 to 258 due to the enlarging of rooms in the main building.

The Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa suites are a spacious 1,610 square feet (including lanai) and the Junior suites measure just under 1,000 square feet, while the regular guest rooms on the remodeled floors have been expanded to 550 square feet.

With luxurious interior furnishings, upgraded bedding, oceanview bathrooms, and a host of the latest in entertainment amenities, the guestrooms have never been more comfortably modern while staying true to Rockefeller's vision of "understated elegance."

The Territory Continues to Garner Acclaim

Pocono Mountains Stand the Test of Time

Like a classic piece of art, the Pocono Mountains of Northeast Pennsylvania – a must-visit destination for generations – have stood the test of time. While the grand resorts of an earlier time remain and stand watch over the four-county region, new resorts have joined the mix. Visitors returning after years away will recognize the quaint charm of this mountain setting, but many properties have undergone a reinvention to meet and exceed the needs of today’s savvy traveler.

Home to hundreds of holes of golf by legendary, Golden Era designers such as Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast, as well as the modern master – Jack Nicklaus – the Pocono Mountains golf properties are plentiful and as varied as any destination in the country.

Whether searching for a challenging course that will test the lowest handicapper or a beginner-friendly track with equally budget-friendly prices, the Pocono Mountains offer something to match any level of play. A similar dichotomy exists in design – from tight, tree-lined fairways and postage-stamp greens to wide open layouts with expansive putting complexes and long views of Mother Nature’s beauty.

Split Rock Resort & Golf Club in Lake Harmony continues work on the new nine holes with an expected opening of 2009, bringing the total number of holes to 36. Like many Pocono Mountain properties, the resort has introduced new value-laden midweek specials. Likewise, Hideaway Hills Golf Club in Kresgeville is catering to the 60-and-over crowd by extending its “Senior Day” to days – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

The Country Club at Woodloch Springs in Hawley and Fernwood Hotel and Resort in Bushkill are also in the midst of enhancements designed to improve the overall golfing experience by widening select fairways and increasing landing areas.

Beauty, Serenity of Circling Raven Golf Club Enhanced

U.S. Highway 95 Route Now Connects Resort from Opposite Side, Well Away from Circling Raven.

(WORLEY, Idaho) – When a course like the one at Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort & Hotel’s Circling Raven Golf Club wins as many awards as it has – 35 since opening five years ago (see the partial list below) – it reinforces the resounding quality found there. While many would be hard-pressed to envision how the Circling Raven experience could be made better, that’s precisely what has happened thanks to U.S. Highway 95 having been rerouted.

The road used to pass along the 18th fairway and across the land of the Coeur d’Alene tribe, which owns and operates Circling Raven (http://www.circlingraven.com/, 800-523-2464). The new highway and interchange now provide access to the casino resort hotel and golf club from the resort’s west side. The old highway has been deeded over to the CDA Tribe.

Renowned for its peaceful, pristine setting, the proximity of the old highway next to the last Circling Raven fairway was considered a minor item for an otherwise unanimously acclaimed course. It was akin to a rock group’s CD cover being placed next to Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa” in the Louvre Museum – you wouldn’t like to see it there but the masterpiece remains the masterpiece.

With the bypass in place Circling Raven is unspoiled from start to finish.

“Now that the road is gone it’s clear how much more tranquil the 18th hole is and in line with the rest of the course and resort,” says Circling Raven Director of Golf Tom Davidson. “This is particularly gratifying as we continue to implement a comprehensive ‘green program’ here at the resort. The Coeur d’Alenes place great emphasis on caring for their land, and this helps ensure its legacy will be preserved for generations to come.”

A convenient, scenic drive from Spokane (WA), the casino resort and golf club are nestled on a reservation covering 345,000 acres of mountains, lakes, old-growth forest and farmland. The resort spans the western edge of the northern Rocky Mountains.

Designed by golf course architect Gene Bates, Circling Raven was created amid a unique blend of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands. Tethrow Named Best New Course of the Year

David McLay Kidd named as 'Architect of the Year'

(BEND, Oregon) - Tetherow Golf Club in Bend, Oregon was ranked as the No. 1 "Best New Course of The Year" in the just released January issue of Golf Magazine. The visually striking Tetherow Golf Club is a par 72, 7298 yard layout that was designed by David McLay Kidd (the same world renowned architect who designed Bandon Dunes and the new Castle Course, the seventh course at St. Andrews, Scotland) and topped all others in this annual ranking of the "top 10 new courses you can play."

"It is a true honor for Tetherow to receive such an impressive accolade from Golf Magazine," stated Orinn Vincent, C.E.O. and founder of OB Sports, the management company overseeing operations at Tetherow. Tucson's First Nicklaus Golf Course Since 1984 Ready To Debut


Non-Member Play To Be Available Exclusively During 2009

(MARANA, Ariz.) - The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain, home of the Tucson area's first new Jack Nicklaus golf course in 25 years, is destined to set the standard for championship golf in a luxury high-desert setting when it is unveiled in 2009.

A reflection of the Sonoran Desert's lush, mountainside terrain, the original 27 holes of this Jack Nicklaus Signature Design present unique challenges and distinct character, blended naturally among noble saguaros that line the surrounding Tortolita Mountain Range.

The private courses strike a balance between fulfilling the desired resort experience and meeting club membership standards. Colligen Restores Tillinghast Course

(ARLINGTON, Texas) - The Municipal Golf Association San Antonio acquired the services of Colligan Golf Design for the restoration of Brackenridge Park Golf Course in September 2007. "Old Brack" was designed in 1915 by AW Tillinghast and is the first municipal course in Texas. In addition it became the original home of the Texas Open until the tournament was relocated in 1959.

As native Texans, John Colligan and design associate Trey Kemp felt added pressure to restore Brack to its original Tillinghast style. Golf course architect John Colligan stated, "If we do our job no one will know we were involved, they will think that Tilly has just finished the project."

Brack is the latest of CGD's historic renovations. Others include, Rockwood Golf Course a 1938 John Bredemus; Colonial Country Club a 1935 Perry Maxwell/John Bredemus collaboration; Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club a 1926 Alister Mackenzie/Perry Maxwell joint venture; and River Crest Country Club a 1911 Tom Bendelow course.

An original routing of the course with all the greens, tees and bunkers was found in the Brackenridge Clubhouse. Kemp scanned this layout and transposed it onto a 2007 aerial photo of the course. This was the beginning of what can be found on the 113.6 acre site today.

Colligan Golf Design presented two concepts to the MGA-SA, the first was the routing of the course as it was in 1915, and the other used a routing that had been changed in 1968 due to the construction of highway 281. The MGA-SA voted unanimously to take Brack back to its hay day.

Colligan and Kemp began the process of researching the many Tillinghast design characteristics in books, pictures and from Tillinghast courses they had visited. Once the documentation process was completed it provided an array of Tillies design features which were incorporated onto the original layout. These include greens with rectangular shapes, flat bottom sand bunkers with steep grass faces and fairway mowing patterns with traditional straight lines and a basic design philosophy as stated by Tillinghast, "He who plans any hole for golf, should have two aims: first to produce something which will provide a true test of the game, and then consider every conceivable way to make it as beautiful as possible. He should have in mind not only the skill and brawn of the golfers but their eyes as well."

Golfworks, the contractor, started the $4.5 million dollar project in January 2008 and completed it in July 2008. Slated to open in Mid October, Brackenridge is to be the lead horse for the Alamo Golf Trail, which will include the cities six other golf facilities.

Colligan Golf Design is contracted to assist with improvements on these courses now that Brack is complete. In the minds of Colligan and Kemp, San Antonio is the most historic city in Texas and Brackenridge is the most historic course. Their intention was to make the course a Tillinghast museum, a living museum that can be experienced and enjoyed by golfers from around the world.

Willow Crest Golf Club Earns Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Status

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel Reopening Nears

(MAUNA KEA, Hawaii) - Following an extensive multi-million dollar restoration, The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel will reopen its doors on Dec. 20. The hotel originally opened in 1965.

"The 'Grand Dame' of the Big Island of Hawaii will continue to perpetuate the true Hawaiian traditions of aloha, coupled with the classic elegance of the Hawaiian Islands that it has been known for," says the resort's new General Manager, Jon Gersonde. "The goal of the restoration has been to update and refine The Mauna Kea's reputation as a sophisticated and intimate luxury beachfront resort. Gersonde says the December 20 date represents a soft opening to ease the hotel back into operations after two years of being closed. New amenities at The Mauna Kea Beach Hotel include a spa offering an array of exotic treatments; exciting new culinary experiences stewarded by Executive Chef George Gomes; and newly refurbished guest rooms. The total room and suite count has been reduced from 310 to 258 as a result of rooms being enlarged in the main building. Play Golf America Programs Still Going Strong after Five Years

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) - Play Golf America was launched in 2004 as an industry-wide marketing campaign designed to introduce people to golf, plus improve their ability to play and enjoy the game. As a result, millions of players nationwide have taken advantage of free and low-cost Play Golf America programs delivered by PGA and LPGA Professionals.

More than 3.4 million people have participated in group instruction at the grass-root level, for an average of 678,000 students per year over Play Golf America's five-year history. Branded Play Golf America programs have reached 1.28 million consumers since 2004 through participation in Play Golf America Days, special events and National Promotions such as PGA Free Fitting and Trade-Up Month, PGA Free Lesson Month, American Express Women's Golf Month and Family Golf Month with Take Your Daughter to the Course as its cornerstone. In addition, an average of 5.5 million golfers participated in leagues and outings per year during that same time frame.

"We are certainly excited that so many golfers, including families are taking advantage of the programs that Play Golf America offers," says PGA of America President Jim Remy. "Play Golf America provides fun, flexible, and affordable golf options for all, and the opportunity to get outdoors, spend time with family and friends, and experience this wonderful sport. • Since 2007, National Promotions have accounted for a $37.5 million impact to the golf economy over the last two years

• 7.3 billion media impressions were made with a value of $138 million in the last five years

The national player-development program is reaching consumers and bringing business to local golf facilities. It is projected that Play Golf America National Promotions, such as PGA Free Fitting & Trade-Up Month, PGA Free Lesson Month, American Express Women's Golf Month and Family Golf Month have accounted for a $20.7 million impact in 2008 and $16.8 million impact in 2007 to the golf economy. On the local level, program coordinators reported that hosting National Promotions generated a gain in their revenues. Based on 2008 surveys, host facilities generated combined median gains of $3,870 following Free Fitting & Trade-Up Month; $2,560 following Free Lesson Month, $3,320 following American Express Women's Golf Month and $4,740 following Family Golf Month.

More than 75 percent of new golfers report that one year after participating in a Play Golf America experience, they played an average of 17 rounds over that 12 month period spending $1,695 on golf-related items. Existing golfers reported playing 44 rounds per year, spending $3,559 on golf-related items.

Over the last five years, 235 Play Golf America Days have been held nationwide reaching more than 85,000 people. Of those participants, 36 percent were new or former golfers, 25 percent were women and 23 percent were minorities. These free golf festivals held at golf courses and ranges across the country feature PGA and LPGA Professional instruction, golf clinics, equipment demos, contests and other activities designed to introduce the game to new golfers and make existing players more excited about the game. Play Golf America Days expanded from just three events during its first year in 2004 to more than 90 events in 2008.

PlayGolfAmerica.com, the ultimate resource for new and occasional golfers to find free and affordable programs in their area, has seen an increase in visitor traffic each year with the 2008 calendar year projecting a 165 percent increase over the inaugural year (2004). In 2008, more than 4,600 facilities used PlayGolfAmerica.com to promote their player-development programs throughout the year, a 520 percent increase over the Play Golf America total in 2004. Over the five-year history, more than 40,000 unique programs have been promoted on www.PlayGolfAmerica.com.

Efforts to grow the popularity of golf among women are also paying off big for the game. It is projected that nearly 100,000 women participated in a variety of 2008 Play Golf America initiatives, including branded National Promotions, Play Golf America Days, special events and programs targeted specifically for women.

Play Golf America also had another strong year in terms of reaching consumers through public relations, advertising and promotions bringing the five-year total to 7.3 billion media impressions for a value of $138 million.

Established as a comprehensive marketing campaign in 2004, Play Golf America has evolved into a multi-dimensional initiative, including various programs, resources, and educational tools as well as a marketing campaign to increase participation among new and existing golfers.
