Deerwood Country Club in South Jacksonville will undergo a year-long redesign of its 65-year-old golf course, closing in October 2026 and reopening in October 2027. The equity member-owned club spans more than 180 acres, with the original course designed by George Cobb.
Ahead of the renovation, a new six-hole short course called The Approach will debut, offering members a more casual and social way to enjoy the game. The project will be constructed by Jacksonville-based MacCurrach Golf Construction and will include upgraded irrigation and drainage systems.
The redesign of the main course will feature dramatic updates, highlighted by a shared double-green complex for the par-3 12th and par-4 14th holes. Architect Erik Larsen of Larsen Golf, who has designed more than 100 courses worldwide and previously served as Arnold Palmer’s project architect, is leading the project. His design includes large, strategically placed white-sand bunkers, a swale on the 12th hole, and multiple risk-reward opportunities such as a drivable par-4 at the 11th and a par-5 at the 10th wrapping around the lake. The course will stretch to 7,350 yards.
Deerwood’s enhancements continue a trend among Jacksonville-area clubs. Glen Kernan Club reopened earlier this year after a two-year renovation that included a new clubhouse, while Jacksonville Golf and Country Club will close in late 2027 for course and facility upgrades.
Deerwood has already invested in numerous member amenities since 2022, including a resort-style pool, expanded fitness and wellness complex, pickleball courts, upgraded locker rooms, and new dining options such as 1960, a family restaurant honoring the club’s founding year.
The course, once host to the PGA Tour’s Greater Jacksonville Open between 1967 and 1975, will provide reciprocal playing privileges at other area clubs during the closure.

Deerwood is proud to keep our members playing on property during the full-course renovation. We’ve introduced “The Approach,” a six-hole short course so golfers can maintain their routines and stay connected to the club while the championship course is transformed.
This strategic enhancement ensures our members won’t miss a beat, keeping them on property and engaged, rather than relying solely on reciprocal play and limited tee times at other area clubs.
When construction is complete, Deerwood will offer the finest golf experience in the greater Jacksonville area, a fully renovated PGA Championship course, a premier short course, and world-class instruction led by Travis Fulton.
