Road Trippin' Across the Carolinas

Nags Head Golf Links

A golf getaway across the Carolinas offers it all: From the beach (Outer Banks) to the best (eight private McConnell Golf clubs), from all golf all the time (Pinehurst/Sandhills and the Talamore Golf Resort) to the best birdie for your buck (Fayetteville)

(THE CAROLINAS) — Road trips, golf getaways, buddy excursions. No matter what you call these sporting endeavors they almost always include a couple of important ingredients: Good friends and big fun. Golf trips are built around the entire experience, particularly the bonding with pals and loved ones.

One of the critical decisions for any golf getaway is the destination and in that regard McConnell Golf members and golf aficionados traveling the McConnell Golf Trail experiencing the finest private golf clubs in the Carolinas seemingly have the best of all worlds (www.McConnellGolfTrail.com).

Anderson Creek
With Greg Norman’s gorgeous, award-winning design at The Reserve at Pawleys Island, S.C., they enjoy luxurious coastal golf. At the conveniently accessible Old North State Club in New London, N.C., hard upon Badin Lake, they enjoy the finest urban retreat with all the amenities. And last but not least, with Musgrove Mill and its legendary Arnold Palmer design in Clinton, S.C., they enjoy the quintessential “pure golf” getaway reminiscent of faraway dream destinations like Pine Valley or Bandon Dunes.

Musgrove Mill and The Reserve are the two McConnell Golf clubs located furthest from the group’s core courses in North Carolina’s Triangle and Triad — which include Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., site of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship and Raleigh Country Club, the final design of legendary architect Donald Ross.

Other times for a golf trip you might prefer to arrive at your destination, set up camp and enjoy all golf, all the time. And no better place to do just that than the Sandhills of North Carolina, where visitors to the Talamore Golf Resort can stay and play two of the area’s finest courses, Talamore Golf Club and its sister resort course Mid South Club, both located just minutes from the historic village of Pinehurst (www.TalamoreGolfResort.com).

Talamore Golf Club has been ranked in the forefront of outstanding courses in the Pinehurst area since opening in 1991. Architect Rees Jones brought his considerable talents back to the area in order to design a course that would be visually striking and exceptionally enjoyable. The result was a 7,020-yard layout that was ranked by Golf Digest among the top five new courses in America. Talamore was also made famous by instituting the first llama caddie program, which makes for an unforgettable day.

At the Mid South Club, 545 acres of longleaf pine forests, lakes and gently rolling hillsides provide a backdrop for a place of beauty and serenity. Formerly known as Pinehurst Plantation, the Mid South Club & Lodge was designed by the renowned team of Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay in 1993, and stands as one of the Carolinas’ most attractive private residential golf communities.

Then, there are the times when golf trips are combined with beach trips, and there are few better places to enjoy both than North Carolina’s legendary Outer Banks. Golfers can rent an ocean front beach house or stay on the mainland in one of the best golf cottages you will ever enjoy at Kilmarlic Golf Club (www.PlayOBXGolf.com).

Kilmarlic’s upscale Tom Steele design is more heavily wooded than the island courses and thus less impacted by coastal breezes, Kilmarlic challenges golfers with substantially more water hazards. In fact, there are only three holes on the entire course devoid of a wetland or water feature, forcing golfers to think their way around the layout that stretches a modest 6,560 yards in length and played host the 2004 and 2009 North Carolina Opens and an annual college event.

The Pointe, meanwhile, is a traditional design that spreads out across the rural Carolina mainland. Like Kilmarlic, The Pointe’s greatest defense is in the form of water with 15 holes sporting some sort of wet lateral challenge. Further north on the mainland, The Carolina Club is a big, brawny layout — particularly in relation to the others in the region — that stretches to within lob wedge distance of 7,000 yards. Designed by popular architects Russell Breeden and Bob Moore, the layout is more open than its mainland brethren making the winds more significant.

Those who prefer beach living and the occasional break for golf might prefer the Currituck Club located at the top end of the barrier island. The Rees Jones-designed layout winds through a premier gated Corolla community and features diverse coastal terrain (including sand dunes, wetlands, maritime forests and sound-side shoreline) and glimpses of the Currituck Sound, particularly on signature holes at the par-5 seventh and par-3 15th. Like all the great links courses abroad, the course can change complexion according to the wind speed and direction.

For a true seaside OBX golf experience, you can do no better than Nags Head Golf Links, located on the south end, which challenges golfers with several holes routed right along the Roanoke Sound and winds that seemingly change by the minute. The front nine’s fifth and ninth and the back nine’s 15th and 18th holes actually play right along the water in opposite directions, making club selection more art than science.

Last but certainly not least — particularly during a challenging economy — there are wonderful buddy trips for the value conscious. For instance, golfers breaking up a long road trip or seeking a nearer destination where the courses may not be quite as crowded and are definitely more affordable should try a golf trip to Fayetteville, N.C. (www.GolfOnTheReady.com). With the advent of the nation’s longest north-south Interstate Highway, I-95, in the mid 20th century, Fayetteville became more accessible than ever. Golf course expansion soon followed highway construction and eventually nearly a dozen courses within 30 miles of downtown would open their tee sheets to players. Eventually, public-access golf courses extended out from all quadrants of the city. Classic golf course design names like Donald Ross, Willard Byrd and Ellis Maples crept into the region followed by later ones like Dan Maples and Davis Love III.

What makes the Fayetteville golf experience particularly inviting is the variety you’ll enjoy across its well-manicured fairways. From the thoroughly modern Love III design at Anderson Creek on the northwest side of town to the classic routing featuring a lavish panorama of Cypress trees, ponds and natural springs at Cypress Lakes to the southeast just off I-95 and the 1967 Gates Four Golf and Country Club with winding streams and wooden bridges weaving near the city center, there’s quite a wide range of looks to be found here. Throw in one of the most well-crafted names in golf — Bayonet at Puppy Creek (located on the south side) — and you’ll discover a quartet of courses that makes for a memorable three-night, four-day golf extravaganza.

For a road-tripper seeking value and quality, Fayetteville provides great hotels and golf, plus history, heroes and a hometown feeling.

The ‘New’ Paramount CC Nears Completion

Architect Jim Urbina finishing up the restoration of this Tillinghast gem

(NEW CITY, NY) - The restoration of the golf course at Paramount Country Club — a jewel of golf’s “Golden Age” — is just about done.

Originally laid out in 1920 by A.W. Tillinghast, one of the game’s most famous course designers, Paramount is nearing the end of an 18-month-long project to return it to its roots. Under the leadership of architect Jim Urbina, nearly every one of the 18 holes was tweaked, from minor cosmetic work to the reintroduction of bunkers, shifting of fairways, and the altering and adding of angles of approach.

“We’re finishing up on the back nine,” reports Urbina, who has made regular visits to the club since spring 2011, and has worked closely with course superintendent Brian Chapin and his crew. “Generally the big stuff is done. For example, the ‘Reef Hole,’ the par-three 18th, is finished. We’re all very excited as it is now the only existing ‘reef-type’ hole in existence, a true Tillinghast original.”

Among the holes awaiting their moment are the short par-four 11th (called “The Oblique”) and the long par-four 15th (which Tillinghast explained as having many different lines of attack). Original Tillinghast bunkers, which disappeared over the years, will be reinstated, while fairway lines will be shifted slightly.

“What remains are some of the most interesting holes Tillinghast did,” according to Urbina, who has restored a number of archetypal courses, including San Francisco Golf Club (originally laid out by Tillinghast), Pasatiempo (Alister MacKenzie), Yeamans Hall Club (Seth Raynor), and Garden City (Devereux Emmet and Walter Travis) to name a few.

“I’m also putting back bunkers on the 250-yard, par-three 13th hole,” says Urbina, who noted that, “When the hole was 240 yards, Tillie talked about a one-shot hole where you had to use a wood driver that required the player to execute a long shot. He said that was a true test of golf, and that was way back in 1921! A hole with that length was unheard of but Tillinghast knew the game was changing and even in that era, the ball and clubs were traveling farther.”

Urbina—who was recently in town to showcase the changes to members of the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association—expects the work to be completed soon.

“The plan is to start October 8 and be done by Thanksgiving. Then we’ll all have something to be thankful for. Absolutely!”

Slammin’ Sam Beer Premieres at The Homestead Resort and Sam Snead’s Tavern

Smoothest Beer in Golf Inspired by Legendary Sam Snead

(PINEHURST, NC) – Slammin’ Sam Beer Company announces The Homestead Resort and Sam Snead’s Tavern in Hot Springs, VA, have joined the growing list of fine establishments serving Slammin’ Sam, a craft-brewed premium American lager inspired by the late Sam Snead, one of golf’s greatest gentlemen and champions.

Initially launched in early July at The Greenbrier Resort coinciding with the centennial of Snead’s birth, Slammin’ Sam is currently available in bottles and cans depicting vintage Snead images from the 1950s and 60s. A thirst-quenching premium lager geared toward active lifestyle consumers, Slammin’ Sam features an exceptionally balanced finish that makes it the Smoothest Beer in Golf.

“Dad would be real proud to know the place where he started caddying as a boy – and had so many great experiences – is now serving a beer with his name on it,” says Snead’s son, Jack. “If he were alive today I know he’d think this one is as smooth as his legendary swing.”

Made in Wisconsin by Stevens Point Brewery – a World Beer Cup multiple Gold Medal award winner – Slammin’ Sam showcases a proprietary recipe developed by Ray Klimovitz, recipient of the 2011 Distinguished Life Service Award from the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. It will soon be offered at renowned resorts throughout North America, as well as golf courses, restaurants, bars and other locations.

“Out of the gate, response to our beer, and the lasting resonance of the Snead name, has been off the charts,” says Casey Bierer, Founder and CEO of Slammin’ Sam Beer Company and a former producer-reporter with Golf Channel. “We’re working hard to meet demand and will soon announce a number of partnerships, including one with a U.S. Open host.”

Possessor of a prodigious, self-taught swing, Snead captured seven major championships and an all-time record 82 PGA Tour titles during a professional career spanning six decades. A player on seven and captain of three U.S. Ryder Cup teams, his countless honors include winning PGA Player of the Year (1949) and the Vardon Trophy (1938, 49, 50 and 55). Snead, who passed away in 2002 at age 89, is also a member of the West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame and World Golf Hall of Fame.

KZG Introduces New VC-420 Driver

(NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif.) - KZG, the No. 1 Custom ProLine, has introduced the VC-420 Driver. Designed for maximum ball speed, penetrating trajectory and workability, the VC-420 is a powerhouse for the better player. This aerodynamically-designed club inspires confidence at address, while delivering the ultimate in performance and value. The 420cc size clubhead allows for shot shaping for the better player while minimizing excessive sidespin. The matte black finish will certainly please the eye of the discerning golfer.

"Clubs are not a one-size-fits-all proposition" reports Jennifer King, president of KZG. "Every player's swing is unique and that is why KZG now offers 8 different driver models with a myriad of shaft options. The VC-420 is designed specifically for the better player who prefers a smaller clubhead that gives a lower, boring trajectory. The VC-420 will not disappoint."

The VC-420 Driver features a forged beta titanium face plate which delivers a dense sound and the feel that shotmakers prefer. This forged faceplate has an ultra-fine microstructure where the grain in the metal is smaller and more tightly packed than other lesser grades of titanium resulting in greater ball speed and maximum workability.

The body of the VC-420 is vacuum-cast forged titanium, a costly method in manufacturing, but assures greater durability and quality control. The smaller 420cc head with its aerodynamic shape imparts less wind resistance for greater swing speed. The minimal face progression and square face angles are designed to cater to avid golfers and touring professionals.

All KZG drivers are custom fit and built with numerous shaft options. Retail pricing varies depending on the options selected, with MSRP starting at $399.

The new interior design was crafted by nationally recognized, Club Design Associates and features upgrades to the dining facilities, boardrooms, outdoor patios, flooring, furniture and mechanical systems. The second phase will focus on the golf shop, retail environment and locker rooms.

To further elevate the pure golf experience, award-winning golf course architect David Whelchel will work closely with Escalante and Black Diamond to identify opportunities to lengthen and modernize the golf courses. The course improvements begin with the redesign and reconstruction of all 208 bunkers throughout the courses and practice facilities using the state-of-the-art Better Billy Bunker Method.

Additionally this quarter, Black Diamond Real Estate will begin construction of its first "show" home, The Augusta, overlooking the fourth hole on the Highlands Course. Architecturally appealing and energy efficient, it marks a new era of home building inside the gates.

A boutique owner/operator based in Fort Worth, Texas, Escalante purchased Black Diamond from original owner Stan Olsen in March 2011. Stonewall Orchard to Host 90th Illinois Section PGA Championship

(GRAYSLAKE, IL) - Stonewall Orchard Golf Club is proud to host the 90th Illinois PGA Championship & PGA Professional National Championship (PPNC) August 27-29. The championship is the premier member event on the Illinois PGA calendar.

Midlothian Country Club assistant pro Frank Hohenadel returns to defend his 2011 title after his a 54-hole-total of 207 (65-70-72) at historic Medinah Country Club was four strokes better than second place finisher Matt Slowinski of Glen Oak Country Club.

"Medinah was by far the biggest win of my career," Hohenadel said. "The 65 was my career low for any round. I was really playing some good golf all summer but hadn't played in many tournaments so no one really saw me coming or knew who I was."

On rotation with Medinah and Olympia Fields as IPGA Section Championship site, Stonewall Orchard is a daily fee facility that serves as a formidable host to the event. Designed by Arthur Hills and first opened in 1999, Stonewall has hosted previous IPGA Championships and has served as a final stage qualifying site for the U.S. Open.

"I played Stonewall for the first time a couple months ago, and I found the course difficult but a lot of fun," he said. "It should be a good test, and I'm looking forward to it. I have felt a little more pressure this season playing in tournaments. I feel like I have something to prove and that last year's win wasn't a fluke."

The Illinois PGA Championship returns to Stonewall Orchard GC after a two-year hiatus. In 2010, Olympia Fields Country Club hosted the event on its South Course, where Mike Small, men's head golf coach at the University of Illinois, cruised to an 11-stroke victory, firing a 3-day score of 200 (70-63-67). The last time the Championship was at Stonewall Orchard GC (2009), Small was victorious there, as well. He posted a three-day total of 9-under par, six strokes better than runner-up Jim Sobb, PGA head golf professional at the Ivanhoe Club in Mundelein, Ill.

"Stonewall Orchard continues to be one of the key facilities in our rotation of courses hosting our Illinois PGA Championship," said Michael Miller, Illinois PGA executive director. "This year's tournament will mark the fifth time we've hosted our championship there, and each time it has proven to be a great test of golf to determine our Illinois PGA Champion. I have no doubt PGA head golf professional Jeff Pajula and superintendent Larry Flament and their staff will present us with another great championship week."

The 2012 starting field will be comprised of 156 participants including six past champions. The first and second rounds will be Aug. 27 and 28, respectively, beginning at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees, followed by the final round Aug. 29.

Long-time Illinois PGA partner Nadler Golf Cars will once again be the title sponsor of the Illinois PGA Championship/PPNC. Their support as title sponsor elevated the Championship to record purse levels every year. Presenting PPNC sponsors include: Club Car, Mercedes-Benz, and Omega. Supporting PPNC sponsors include: TaylorMade/adidas, Callaway Golf, Titleist/Footjoy, Nike Golf, and the PGA TOUR.

Royal Isabela Debuts Lodging, Dining Amenities

(ISABELA, Puerto Rico) – Royal Isabela, the $100 million golf community and private membership club perched on the dramatic bluffs of Costa Isabela at the northwest edge of Puerto Rico, has opened “Las Casitas,” reserved for guest stays, and “La Casa,” the main hospitality center that houses the property’s signature restaurant.

Last year, the Golf Links at Royal Isabela, designed by Stanley and Charlie Pasarell and golf architect David W. Pfaff, opened to great praise. GOLF Magazine named it among the “top new courses to watch for” in the 2013 edition of the World’s Top 100 Golf Courses.

Located 90 minutes from San Juan International Airport and just 20 minutes from Aguadilla International Airport, the Royal Isabela community stretches along 426 oceanfront acres from ocean side to the tops of cliffs that range in elevation from 150 to 350 feet above sea level.

Guests at Royal Isabela have their choice of 20 beautifully designed one-bedroom Casitas, with expansive indoor and outdoor space, ocean views and close proximity to the golf course and other amenities. Each Casita has an outdoor patio with an ocean view, and a private terrace with its own plunge pool.

An experienced hospitality staff at Royal Isabela oversees every detail, including a courtesy call before arrival to determine transportation needs, in-room amenities, dinner and golf reservations, room service, concierge and complimentary transportation around the property.

Casitas rates range from $609 to $1409 (low to high season) per night, which includes breakfast and golf for two each day of the stay. Members receive preferred pricing.  There are no minimum stay requirements during low season; there is a two-night stay preferred during high season (November-April), and required on weekends during high season.

La Casa—the community’s “home” and nerve center—sits at one of the region’s highest points, so it is cooled by ocean breezes while offering panoramic views over land and sea. Besides check-in and other resort functions, La Casa is where guests will find The Restaurant, the comfortable Library, and the Croquet Bar, which looks over the 18th hole. In keeping with island traditions, La Casa has been designed in Spanish colonial style, from its stone tower to century-old roof tiles, as well as wrought-iron chandeliers, antique furniture, and artwork.

The Restaurant at La Casa has been created under the guidance of award-winning chef David Pasternack of New York City’s famed Esca Restaurant and noted restaurant consultant John Sergi. The restaurant offers the freshest in farm-to-table dining with the majority of the fruits, vegetables and herbs literally grown in the soil of Royal Isabela.  The intimately sized Restaurant at La Casa features eight tables inside, seating for five at the pizza oven bar, and more tables outside on the terrace.

With the benefit of Royal Isabela’s River Canyon Farm and Organic Gatehouse Garden, the executive chef can combine locally sourced ingredients with traditional European and Puerto Rican cooking techniques.  Daily menus include fresh, line-caught, local seafood such as lobster, grouper, snapper and dorado (mahi-mahi), as well as homemade pastas and an array of traditional Puerto Rican dishes. A select variety of wines from around the world complement the daily menu options.

The founders of Royal Isabela are Stanley Pasarell, President, and Charles Pasarell, both descendants of Dr. Manuel Zeno Gandia, a celebrated Puerto Rican literary figure. The brothers, who were born and raised in Puerto Rico and in the 1960’s were dominant in American tennis at the junior, college, and national levels, bring their love of the local culture and hospitality, as well as a great passion for golf and nature to the property.  Edwin Perez, a well-respected business leader in Puerto Rico, also is a partner in the project.

For additional information or to reserve rooms, access the web site at www.royalisabela.com or call (787) 609-5888 or (855) 609-5888.

Echelon Golf Club Earns Top Honors from Golf Magazine

Rated best public course in metro-Atlanta and among top 11 in Georgia

(Alpharetta, Georgia) - Echelon Golf Club has been recognized as the No. 1 public golf course in metro-Atlanta and No. 11 in the State of Georgia, according to GOLF Magazine's biennial ranking recently released.

Located in the north-Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta and managed by Affiniti Golf Partners, Echelon is a broad-shouldered, beautiful and formidable test designed by famed golf course architect Rees Jones in 2006.

The course rambles over 600-acres of rolling hills, and provides striking elevation change and dramatic views, especially on the back nine. And Echelon's 32-acre practice and training facility is one of the finest in the state.

"We are thrilled with the national-class recognition gained from Golf Magazine," says Echelon Golf Club General Manager Cary Perez. "Their evaluation echoes that of our members and daily fee players, who consistently marvel at the architectural excellence and immaculate course conditioning they encounter."

Echelon's defense against par is well-renowned in the region, and was confirmed when the Atlanta Business Chronicle's 2011 Book of Lists rated it the "Toughest Golf Course in Atlanta," with a course rating of 77.3 and a slope rating of 150. Stretching 7,558-yards from the back tees, Echelon is also the longest course on the Business Chronicle's Top 25 list. Yet, multiple sets of tees level the playing field and keep the game fun and forgiving for all.

With a monthly readership of over 6 million, Golf Magazine is the second largest golf publication in the world. Every two years it ranks the best public golf courses in America, and also ranks the best courses you can play in every state.

Golf Magazine's ranking panel consists of 100 voters from 17 countries, and includes LPGA Hall of Famers, golf course architects and photographers, and several British and U.S. Amateur winners.

According to the publication, "We have no specific criteria that our raters must follow: they tell us what constitutes "greatness" in a course. Still, among the architectural elements they consider are design rhythm, variety of terrain and holes, setting and conditioning, and how well the course tests a player's full arsenal of skills."

Echelon shared top recognition in the Golf Magazine rankings with such other elite Georgia courses as Great Waters at Reynolds Plantation and the Seaside Course at Sea Island. No other Atlanta course made the Top 15 list. Echelon started out life as the Georgia Tech Club, but has since changed its ownership and name.

For tee-time or membership information at Echelon Golf Club call the golf shop at 770.888.4653 or visit online at www.EchelonLiving.com.

EWGA Foundation Announces Women on Par Scholarship Recipients

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLORIDA) – The EWGA Foundation - the charitable arm of the EWGA dedicated to enriching the lives of women by creating and funding education and leadership programs - has announced the two recipients of its annual Women on Par Scholarship.

The woman chosen for the $1,000 award will begin her senior year this month with a major in Psychology at a California university.  Despite being a recent victim of domestic abuse currently in hiding with her young child, she is driving forward with the completion of her degree, being a full-time parent and focusing on her goal of getting into medical school.

Upon being notified of the EWGA Foundation scholarship, she expressed her gratitude and explained how timely and helpful the money has proven.

“I recently met with the university’s housing and financial aid department, which informed me that I was $1,000 short for tuition,” said the young mother, who requested anonymity due to the domestic violence she’s suffered. “This will allow me to finish school and walk across that stage to receive my diploma. This means the world to me.”

Despite battling hardship, fear and tremendous personal trauma, including living with her son in a shelter and driving more than an hour each way to attend classes, she has been able to maintain excellent grades and is expected to graduate with honors.

“My son motivates me because I want to show him what it means to be able to pick yourself up and complete your goals,” she said. “It is scary to not have a financial support system to rely on, but my advice is to try and keep pressing forward. Don’t ever quit. I know this can seem extremely hard when you don’t know where your next meal is coming from, or you don’t have a roof over your head.   It takes a lot of tears and work, and digging around in your soul to find the courage – or crazy – to take one small step at a time.  But as long as you don’t give up, eventually adversity will pass and someone will help you like the EWGA Foundation is helping me.”

The second Women on Par Scholarship recipient is Michelle Josey of Philadelphia, who enters Cairn University in Langhorne, Pennsylvania this month to pursue a B.S. in Bible Studies. After suffering an abusive marriage, a drug addiction, single motherhood and discovering her HIV-positive status, Michelle decided to move forward with her educational goals by returning to school at the age of 49 and is now working toward her undergraduate degree. Josey was previously enrolled at Lynchburg’s Liberty University before her recent move and transfer.

“Sharing my story in counseling sessions and seminars encourages people and gives them hope and belief, because it would have been so easy for me to allow my past to overcome me and for me to give up on myself,” Josey said. “But I changed my life and other people can as well.

Established in 2007, the Women on Par Scholarship Program is designed to assist women over the age of 30 in pursuit of an undergraduate degree. The scholarship provides financial assistance to “nontraditional” female students in order for them to advance themselves in their education and help them “get on par” with their peers and advance themselves professionally.

“The EWGA and EWGA Foundation help women through the game of golf, both on the course and in life,” says Nona Footz, president of the EWGA Foundation. “The E in EWGA stands for many things, things which are personally defined, and for Women on Par Scholarship recipients, the ‘E’ certainly stands for empowering, which is inspirational.”

Bubba Watson Four Long Drives Shy of Reaching Fundraising Goal with PING

(PHOENIX) – Bubba Watson needs only four drives of 300 yards or longer at The Barclays this week to reach the target of 300 drives established earlier this year with the “Bubba Long in Pink. Driven by PING” promotion. For the season, with his all-pink PING G20 driver, he has blasted 296 drives 300 yards or farther, earning $300 from PING for each one. To date, Bubba has raised $88,800 from the company as part of the promotion during PGA Tour-sanctioned events.

In January, Watson announced the formation of “Bubba & Friends Drive to a Million,” a year-long campaign to raise $1 million for charity through his own efforts and the support of his partners and sponsors. At that time, PING launched “Bubba Long in Pink. Driven by PING,” a program that pledges $300 for every drive Bubba hits 300 yards or farther (up to 300 drives). It kicked off the initiative with a $10,000 donation.

In addition, PING contributed $250,000 from the sale of 5,000 pink G20 drivers inspired by Watson’s.

“It’s been a lot of fun this year knowing every drive over 300 yards carries a little extra incentive,” said Watson. “PING’s support of my goal of raising $1 million this season has been amazing. Between this promotion and the pink G20 driver program where they donated $50 from the sale of each driver, they’ll contribute $350,000 to charity. I’m grateful for the relationship and their continued support.”

On the season, nearly 63% of Watson’s drives have traveled 300-plus yards, the highest percentage on tour. He leads the tour in average driving distance at 315.9 yards.

The official “Bubba Long in Pink. Driven by PING” tally began with the Farmers Insurance Open. Here are Bubba’s 300-yard-drive totals by tournament:
* Farmers Insurance Open: 26
* Waste Management Phoenix Open: 43
* Northern Trust Open: 35
* WGC-Cadillac Championship: 34
* Arnold Palmer Invitational: 31
* Zurich Classic of New Orleans: 36
* The Memorial Tournament: 15
* Travelers Championship: 31
* WGC-Bridgestone Invitational: 45

Over those tournaments he’s averaging nearly 33 drives of 300 yards or longer.

Dancin’ Dogg Golf Achieves Prestigious Inc. 500 Ranking for Second Consecutive Year

Maker of OptiShot Infrared Simulator Advances to No. 299 on List of America’s Fastest-Growing Private Companies

(TRAVERSE CITY, MI) – Dancin’ Dogg Golf – maker of the OptiShot Infrared Simulator, the ultimate in-home virtual golf system – has posted three-year revenue growth of 1,241%, placing it No. 299 on the 2012 Inc. 500 list of America’s fast-growing entrepreneurial companies.

This honor, as published in the September issue of Inc. Magazine, represents a rise of 59 positions from Dancin’ Dogg’s inaugural placement on the 2011 list. The ascension was spurred by rapid spikes in consumer and retailer demand for OptiShot’s easy-to-use in-home system. Fun, affordable and hyper-accurate, it allows players to practice and play using their own clubs on replicas of major championship courses.

“Our dedicated team is focused on delivering an unmatched experience for men and women of all ages who want to practice and improve their games anytime, day or night,” says Brandon Theophilus, CEO of Dancin’ Dogg Golf. “Of all the accolades we’ve received recently, this one is special since it’s an objective and overwhelming validation of the virtual golfing experience provided by OptiShot.”

Over the last 12 months, Dancin’ Dogg has grown its North American retail presence by more than 30%, adding approximately 700 golf-specialty stores to its roster of partners. Earlier this year, the company began expanding its international footprint through distribution agreements in the UK, continental Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

OptiShot (MSRP $399.95) operates via a plug-and-play interface with Windows computers. Featuring crystal-clear graphics and superb visual shot feedback of clubhead speed, face angle, swing path, distance, tempo, face contact and ball flight, it also offers users the ability to:
* Play full rounds with up to four players
* Hit all shots from tee to green
* Tune settings to specific clubs
* Practice shots from anywhere on any course
* Export detailed performance statistics
* Create multiple players and manage their settings / preferences
* Requiring only 8-½ feet of swing space, the system allows golfers to compete and practice by hitting real balls, foam balls (provided) or no ball at all off a durable swing pad with embedded infrared sensors. In addition to Core courses that come standard, users can purchase premium courses, use the par-3 option, or hit balls on a realistic driving range.
