Tim Rosaforte Becomes First Journalist Elected to Honorary PGA of America Membership

Former Print and Golf Channel/NBC Reporter honored by vote of PGA Delegates for his outstanding contributions to the game of golf

(PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla.) – Tim Rosaforte of Jupiter, Florida, whose award-winning coverage from print to television promoted the impact PGA Professionals make in growing the game of golf, has been elected the first journalist to receive Honorary Membership in the PGA of America. He is just the 12th person ever to receive the designation of PGA Honorary Member.

Tim Rosaforte
Rosaforte, 65, a former senior writer for Golf World/Golf Digest and “Mr. Insider” as an analyst for Golf Channel/NBC, was recognized during the 104th PGA Annual Meeting, which was conducted virtually due to COVID-19. Rosaforte retired in December 2019 and has battled early onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

“Tim Rosaforte’s passion for getting to the heart of a story matched his admiration for the PGA Professional,” said PGA Honorary President Suzy Whaley. “His career journey was one of love and devotion to this great game. Tim earned the title, ‘Mr. Insider,’ for his attention to detail and dogged pursuit of the facts that often resulted in his ‘scooping’ his peers. He also earned a rightful place among the PGA family for the care he put into his work about our Members. It is with great pride that we welcome him as an Honorary Member of the PGA of America.”

The son of a mechanic for the highway department in Bedford, New York, Rosaforte received discarded wooden clubs from his father and later took lessons at age 6 from a caddie with an inspirational name, Billy Graham. Rosaforte excelled in football and baseball in high school and attended the University of Bridgeport (Connecticut) before transferring his junior year to the University of Rhode Island, where he started his senior season as an outside linebacker and also excelled on special teams. He was a two-time member of the dean’s list and graduated with a degree in journalism in 1977.

Rosaforte credited Wilbur Doctor, a former Providence Journal editor turned University of Rhode Island professor, who was “as blunt as any position coach in football,” for “turning me around in my attempt to build a writing career.”

Rosaforte’s journalism career began with the former Tampa Times in 1977, where he was mentored by Tampa Tribune Sports Editor Tom McEwen. Rosaforte said McEwen recommended that he start playing golf to help his work because, said McEwen, “‘You can learn far more about someone in a span of five hours on a course.’” Rosaforte called it “the epiphany of my career.”

Rosaforte began to find his stride as a reporter, working from 1981-87 at the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida; the Palm Beach Post in West Palm Beach, Florida, from 1987-93; and on to Sports Illustrated from 1994-96. While at Sports Illustrated, Rosaforte served as president of the Golf Writers Association of America (GWAA). Rosaforte joined Golf Digest in 1996, and blended his work between the parent magazine and as a senior writer for Golf World.

In 2003, Rosaforte was named co-host of the USA Network’s “PGA Tour Sunday,” providing early-round coverage of Tour events, the Masters and the Ryder Cup. In 2007, Rosaforte joined Golf Channel, and was a fixture as a contributor to NBC’s PGA Tour and Ryder Cup coverage through to his retirement.

On Feb. 17, 2013, Rosaforte became the sole reporter gaining access to “scoop” the White House press corps on the first meeting between then-President Barack Obama and Tiger Woods for a day of golf at The Floridian in Palm City, Florida.

Rosaforte was recipient of the 2014 PGA Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism. He has won more than 40 writing awards, including a GWAA “Grand Slam” for first-place magazine coverage in features, columns, event coverage and special projects.

Since 1980, Rosaforte has covered 147 major championships and 17 Ryder Cups. Rosaforte has written five books: “The PGA Tour” (1990); “Heartbreak Hill: Anatomy of a Ryder Cup” (1996); “Tiger Woods: The Makings of a Champion” (1997); “World Golf Hall of Fame Yearbook” (with Jaime Diaz, 1998); and “Raising the Bar: The Championship Years of Tiger Woods” (2000).

PGA Honorary Membership is determined by a vote of PGA delegates that recognize individuals for their outstanding contributions to the game of golf.

Honorary PGA Members include former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gerald R. Ford and George H.W. Bush, who were recognized for service to the United States of America and the game of golf; along with professional golfers Gary Player and Dennis Walters; and entertainer Bob Hope.

Honorary PGA Membership includes recipients who were long-tenured staff that distinguished themselves as national representatives of the Association; as national and international business leaders providing volunteer service to the PGA of America; as professional golfers whose lack of U.S. citizenship or disabilities precluded their acquiring membership; and as entertainers or sports figures who generated charitable support for the sport or by their endeavors strived for inclusion and diversity in the game and business of golf.

Rosaforte and his wife, Genevieve, live in Jupiter, Florida, and are parents of daughters, Genna and Molly.

V1 Sports Partners with Foresight Sports to Bring Industry-Leading Launch Monitor Data into V1 Pro Video Analysis Platform

(Novi, Mich.)
— V1 Sports (V1) producer of the industry-leading golf swing analysis software and apps for teaching pros and golfers, is proud to announce a partnership with San Diego-based Foresight Sports, creators of the industry’s most trusted launch monitor technologies, to integrate data from Foresight Sports’ “Game Changer” launch monitors into the V1 Pro interface. By combining detailed, real-time launch monitor data with V1 Pro video feedback, golf instructors can now factor in Swing Speed, Ball Speed, Launch Angle, Push/Pull, Back Spin and Side Spin as they determine how to help their students improve.

“We’re excited to work with technology leader Foresight Sports’ to integrate their rapid and robust launch monitor data into the V1 feedback loop. Marrying accurate swing data with state-of-the-art video capture allows an instructor to see all the fine details video provides along with the DNA-level facts on every swing. This is another way that V1 is helping instructors yield better golf lessons and faster game improvement,” says V1 Sports CEO Bryan Finnerty.

V1, who recently saw users surpass the four-million mark in online lessons earlier this year, has made significant upgrades to it V1 Pro software and mobile platforms, including a sleek, efficient user interface, dynamic integration of V1 Pressure Mat data and the ability to record real-time tips and drill videos with audio using their live cameras and microphone.

Meanwhile, Foresight Sports’ has made a huge impression on the golf industry with its Infrared photometric (camera-based) GCQuad model, which boasts automated ultra-high-speed Quadrascopic cameras that provide exceptional accuracy and insight on every swing captured. The GCQuad offers no fewer than 13 club and ball data points, from azimuth and spin-tilt axis to angle of attack, impact location and closure rate. Equipped with an infrared light source array, built-in barometer, and self-leveling system makes it simple to pick up and play in any conditions with no calibration required.

“Instant video feedback from the V1 Pro system paired with accurate data from our Foresight Sports launch monitors can greatly accelerate golfers’ improvement and the depth of understanding shared between golf instructors and their students,” says Rick Cuellar, director of sales for Foresight Sports. “By combining V1 Pro video technology and the expertise of the instructor to diagnose a student’s swing issues with launch monitor data that precisely characterizes why and how a golfer produces certain shot patterns, you have a sort of double validation of how the golfer needs to improve. Setting goals and benchmarks is much easier with this integration because the data explains the shot shapes and misses so well.”

Instructors who already use both technologies will be able to take advantage of the Foresight integration into V1 Pro software today by contacting sales@v1sports.com. Others interested in taking advantage of this powerful partnership can learn more at https://v1sports.com/coaches/v1-pro.

Steiner is excited to help hotel guests get their golf games to the next level in a unique environment. he takes a hands-on approach that makes lessons fun and educational. “I like to talk to the golfers before they get here, so I get a good feel of where they are with their golf game, what their experience has been with lessons, and why they are coming,” says Steiner. “I want to know how I can help them become better and enjoy themselves more on the course. The actual instruction is different for each person in your group. And it doesn’t matter if your skill levels are the same or not, I tailor the instruction to each person, and teach all facets of the game.”

According to Steiner, this getaway package is ideal for couples-- regardless of if their skill sets are identical or differ by a large margin -- or for pairs of buddies or women who want to enjoy some time together and share an amazing experience. “And of course, you still get to play some golf while you’re here,” adds Steiner, who has more than 20 years of golf instruction experience at nationally renowned golf schools. “If you go on a trip and just play golf, it makes for a great vacation but you sort of leave it there. But if you incorporate golf lessons into your getaway, then the benefit of that vacation lingers on way after you get home. Horseshoe Bay Resort is such a wonderful place. It’s one of the most beautiful settings in a special part of the world. And I’m thrilled we’ve started the Stay, Play & Learn Package. Desert Highlands Designated a Top-15 ‘Platinum Club of America’ Golf Club

Club Leaders Forum Ranks Scottsdale Club Best in Arizona, 14th Overall for 2021-22

(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) – Desert Highlands – the acclaimed luxury golf club and community in the stunning Sonoran Desert of North Scottsdale – ranked among the top-15 of 'Platinum Clubs of America' golf clubs for 2021-22 by the Club Leaders Forum, a leading source in the private club industry and publisher of The Forum Magazine.

The famed Scottsdale club finished 14th overall in these rankings, and was the only golf club in Arizona to be listed in the top-25. Every two years, a preliminary ballot is circulated to private club managers around the country to nominate clubs for a final ballot. Once complete, the final ballot is distributed to club managers, presidents and owners of America’s finest private clubs. These club officials then rate clubs based on the Platinum Club Advisory Board’s seven selection criteria: Universal Recognition; Excellence in Amenities and Facilities; Caliber of Staff and Professional Service Levels; Quality and Commitment of Membership; Governance and Fiscal Management; Adapting to Changing Times; and Overall Experience.

The Club Leaders Forum ranked Augusta National as the top golf club for 2021-22. Seminole Golf Club in Florida rounded out the top-10, while San Francisco Golf Club finished at No. 11, Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland was 12th and Chicago Golf Club ranked 13th.

“Being selected by the Club Leaders Forum’s esteemed panel as a top-15 Platinum Club of America golf club is truly an honor,” says Monty Becton, General Manager / COO of Desert Highlands. “Our staff does a remarkable job of upholding Desert Highlands’ championship caliber conditioning and impeccable service standards, making it an amazing place to live and play golf. Our members, who are the ambassadors of the golf club and community, are extremely proud of this prestigious accolade.”

Desert Highlands’ energetic lifestyle consistently draws discerning families and active Boomers in equal measure – golfers, tennis enthusiasts, pet lovers, and health and wellness enthusiasts. A full social calendar allows residents to fully enjoy this peaceful community.

Stretching to over 7,100 yards, the Desert Highlands golf course recently re-opened after a $7 million renovation project that included refurbishing every bunker, restoring the 13th hole to its original design, installing a new irrigation system and updating cart paths. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course offers a challenging, but fair test, and striking views of Pinnacle Peak and the lights of the Valley spread across the horizon in the distance below. Desert Highlands was Nicklaus’ first design in Arizona, and immediately set the bar for desert golf experiences, not only in Scottsdale but statewide and nationwide.

Just as impressive is Desert Highlands’ Racquet Club, which sports 13 tennis courts featuring all three Grand Slam surfaces – grass, clay and hard. Noted ATP player Nick Kyrgios considers Desert Highlands’ grass courts “better than Wimby [Wimbledon].” The Racquet Club also added two regulation-size pickleball courts earlier this year.

Earlier this month, Desert Highlands unveiled Jack’s, a lively gastropub inside the clubhouse named after Nicklaus, to its members. Led by award-winning architect Erik B. Peterson of PHX Architecture, Jack’s is a high-energy gathering space that diversifies Desert Highlands’ dining options. A large custom communal table commands the room and provides a custom bar experience for up to 22. Jack’s also features high tops, flat-screen televisions and images that pay homage to the influence that Nicklaus and other golf legends have made.

In addition, Desert Highlands boasts a 7,700-square-foot Wellness Center, an 18-hole professionally designed putting course and a spacious dog park. Inside, the club provides residents peace of mind with a state-of-the-art security system, professionally trained security personnel, visitor control and access, and other protection amenities. Among the acclaimed residential services that truly pamper residents and meet their specific needs – shipping and transportation assistance, pool and spa maintenance, auto detailing and other customized services.

Inrange Co-Founder Nick Longley Joins Panel on ‘Advancing Technology in a Traditional Game’ at Golfzon Leadbetter University Virtual Summit

Free Session Held Live on October 30 at Noon EST

(LONDON, England) – Inrange – the industry’s most advanced ball-tracking system that turns driving ranges into exciting environments for practice and entertainment – announces Co-Founder Nick Longley will join a unique panel of experts for a one-hour session on technology’s impact on golf at the 2020 Golfzon Leadbetter University Virtual Summit, held online October 30 at Noon EST.

The discussion is free to attend and will be broadcast live. Longley will be joined by representatives from Golf Digest, Golfzon and Rapsodo for a conversation on how technology is pushing accepted norms to help grow the game, and how it is better connecting coaches to their students. The two-week summit runs from October 26 – November 7 and features a variety of special programs and speakers, including Nick Faldo, Dave Pelz, Chris Como, David Leadbetter and more. Each live session grants MSR credit to qualified PGA Members.

The Inrange system, which is used at the Leadbetter Golf Academy in Orlando, consists of radar sensors placed in and around a driving range that create a series of interlocking radar fields. Once calibrated, they can determine the origin of each ball (which bay it was hit from), and track its entire flight, no matter how long or short, in real time. The resulting data is relayed either to an in-bay touchscreen or via the cloud to the Inrange app on the player’s mobile device.

“Participation and interest in golf is booming, and various technological applications like ours ensure that new players have a great first experience with the game, while also helping avid golfers lower their scores,” says Longley, Inrange Co-Founder and Commercial Director. “Facilities are turning to us to create an ROI generating platform that excites customers and attracts new golfers, by providing a stress-free environment where all can improve and have fun.”

Easily covering a range of 100 bays or more, Inrange’s sensors can track dozens of balls hit simultaneously, each from a different origin, and provide detailed data on speed, trajectory, path, landing point and more, to within a yard. Unlike competitor’s systems, they are impervious to all ambient conditions such as darkness, rain, mist and audible noise.

Beyond its advanced hardware, the company is focused on providing the best user experience possible through its interactive app and in-bay displays. The goal when developing the system was to provide golf’s newcomers an experience that would leave them hungry for more, while giving serious players a focused way to improve their handicap with every session. This is achieved through a variety of fun games enjoyable for all skill levels.

Facilities using Inrange report dramatic increases in secondary revenue streams, as patrons naturally want to spend more time at the facility, order more food and beverages and return often with friends. With quick installation and continuous customer service, Inrange works closely with properties of all shapes and sizes to provide a custom-tailored solution for specific needs and budgets.

The company offers a variety of unique ways for facilities and customers to experience the system. A free-to-download app available through the App Store and Google Play lets users track data and play games on their smartphones at Inrange facilities either solo or with others. Inrange+® is the ultimate multiplayer experience, where bays are equipped with display monitors and seating, ideal for challenging friends and enjoying a fun day at the range.

Ballpark Blueprints offers a variety of gift ideas at every price point: from high-end framed, canvas, and metal art ($80-$195), museum-quality unframed art prints ($60), and wall murals ($150), to golf headcovers ($85), fleece stadium blankets ($70), t-shirts and hoodies ($32-$42), ceramic mugs and metal travel mugs ($23-$40), and more.

“The idea for Ballpark Blueprints came about while we were looking for a blueprint-style print of Fenway Park, and realized there was nothing commercially available,” said Thomas Young, Owner & Art Director of Ballpark Blueprints. “My co-founder and I were huge baseball fans and loved the aesthetic of blueprints. We found similar prints for the Golden Gate Bridge and Empire State Building, but no sporting venues. So, in 2002, we decided to create original ballpark art ourselves and the line has since grown to more than 140 stadiums, arenas, ballparks and golf courses.”

In fact, Ballpark Blueprints has expanded its golf line to more than 40 golf courses, including architectural art of such renowned courses as Bandon Dunes, Pinehurst Resort – the first "anchor course" for the US Open – and the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland, the Home of Golf. “It’s an honor to be recognized as a preferred vendor of these legendary golf courses,” shared Young.

College GameDay Built by The Home Depot to Originate from the Masters Tournament in Augusta

(RELEASE)
— ESPN and Augusta National Golf Club are bringing two sporting event traditions together in a unique way, as College GameDay Built by The Home Depot is set to originate from the Masters Tournament, which was postponed from its traditional April date due to the pandemic, on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Augusta, Ga. The 11-time Emmy Award winning traveling pregame show (9 a.m. – noon ET) will emanate from the Par 3 course, the site of the Masters Par 3 contest.

“Anytime College GameDay travels to a new destination it’s special, and the opportunity to be on the grounds of Augusta National Golf Club during the Masters is extraordinary,” said Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman, ESPN and Sports Content. “As this iconic event coincides with the college football season for the first time, we look forward to getting fans ready for a football Saturday, while also showcasing the Masters and the greatest golfers in the world.”

Longtime ESPN host Rece Davis, who is in his sixth season hosting the show, will be joined on-site by five time Emmy Award-winning analyst Kirk Herbstreit, Heisman Trophy winner and Super Bowl MVP Desmond Howard, College Football Hall of Fame inductee and former Georgia All-American David Pollack, researcher Chris “The Bear” Fallica, who is in his 25th year on the show, former two-sport student-athlete (basketball and volleyball) and Georgia undergraduate and MBA alum Maria Taylor, and Tom Rinaldi – who will balance dual roles as he reports on the Masters for the 13th year, as well as contributing to College GameDay’s storytelling. Analyst Lee Corso, a staple on the show since its inception, will be live from his home in Orlando, Fla. Additional contributors include Jen Lada, Pat McAfee and Gene Wojciechowski.

While the show proceeds with no live spectators, ESPN debuted a ‘virtual pit’ this season that gives fans across the country – from all schools, conferences and divisions (even if their team isn’t playing this fall) – the opportunity to be part of College GameDay each week. Fans can register at www.collegegameday.com for a chance to join the live show.

Golf fans will have more ways to watch the Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club on ESPN and ESPN+ than ever before this year with new offerings and expanded coverage during the week of Nov. 9-15.

In its 13th year at the Masters, ESPN will again televise live play of the first and second rounds of the Tournament from 1-5:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 12-13. Expanding the coverage this year will be new, supplemental live streams on ESPN+, including exclusive practice round programs on Nov. 10-11. Also, viewers will be able to watch Featured Holes coverage on ESPN+ of Holes 4, 5 and 6 for all four days of the Masters Tournament, the first time the three holes have ever been highlighted in special coverage, and other live streams including Amen Corner, Holes 15-16 and Featured Groups during Tournament play. SportsCenter also will have dedicated coverage from the Masters all week.

While College GameDay is making its first trip to Augusta National, the show has previously welcomed PGA Tour players Rickie Fowler (former Oklahoma State golfer) and Justin Thomas (former Alabama golfer) as guest pickers in 2015 and 2019, respectively.

2020 U.S. Women’s Open at Champions Golf Club to be Conducted Without Spectators

Ongoing COVID-19 health and safety concerns guide decision for Dec. 10-13 championship

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) — The USGA announced that due to ongoing health and safety concerns from the COVID-19 pandemic, the 75th U.S. Women’s Open Championship, scheduled for Dec. 10-13 at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas, will be conducted without spectators on-site.

“Following extensive consultation with health officials, we have decided that hosting the U.S. Women’s Open without spectators will provide the best opportunity to conduct the championship safely for all involved,” said John Bodenhamer, the USGA’s senior managing director of Championships. “While we are disappointed that we won’t be able to welcome fans and their unmatched energy at Champions Golf Club, we know this is the right decision for the community and players.”

The USGA announced on April 3 that the 75th U.S. Women’s Open, initially scheduled for June 4-7, would be moved to Dec. 10-13. To account for reduced daylight, the Jackrabbit Course at Champions Golf Club will be used in conjunction with the Cypress Creek Course, which was originally slated to host all four rounds of championship play. In June, it was announced that the championship would be conducted without traditional qualifying.

"We are thankful to Champions Golf Club for its continued flexibility and dedication to making the 75th U.S. Women’s Open possible,” said Bodenhamer. “Jack and Robin Burke and the rest of the club have been true partners as we navigate these unprecedented times.”

Tickets purchased directly through the USGA will be automatically refunded to the method of payment used to purchase the tickets. Additional information on U.S. Women’s Open ticket refunds can be found here.

“While 2020 has brought unique challenges to conducting the U.S. Women’s Open, we have used it as an opportunity to innovate and find new, exciting ways to bring the championship to life for fans around the world,” said Craig Annis, chief brand officer of the USGA. “Through our partnership with NBCUniversal and our digital platforms, fans will have unparalleled access to the championship and players across all their devices.”

Fans will be able to experience the championship by watching on NBC/Golf Channel, following along on uswomensopen.com, downloading the U.S. Women’s Open app, following @uswomensopen on social media and downloading the USGA streaming app for connected devices.

Legendary Champion Mickey Wright Bequeaths Estate, Extensive Artifact Collection to USGA

Acquisition marks a milestone in USGA’s efforts to chronicle the history of women’s golf and preserve the legacy of one of the game’s most important figures

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – In support of its mission to champion and advance the game of golf and in appreciation of its continued preservation and celebration of her legacy, the USGA announced that late four-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Mickey Wright has bequeathed her estate and possessions to the USGA.

Wright, who died on Feb. 17 at the age of 85, was the defining female player of the 1950s and 1960s. The preservation of her story is imperative to the USGA’s mission to chronicle the history of women’s golf and share it with generations to come.

The massive collection of more than 300 artifacts related to Wright’s professional career and personal life includes correspondence, photo albums, scrapbooks, equipment, medals, awards, films and videos, as well as her personal writings, library, record collection and other materials that highlight Wright’s diverse interests, such as sculpture, fishing and the stock market. The collection will be housed at the USGA Golf Museum and Library in Liberty Corner, N.J., alongside the collections of many of the game’s greatest champions.

Coupled with the more than 200 artifacts that Wright donated to the Museum in 2011, the USGA has solidified the collection as the world’s greatest related to Wright’s incomparable career in golf as well as her life outside the game.

“We are honored that Mickey Wright has entrusted her legacy to the USGA,” said Hilary Cronheim, director of the USGA Golf Museum and Library. “We strive to preserve each champion’s story in a multi-dimensional way, speaking to the breadth and depth of an individual’s life, character and impact. The story of golf cannot be told without Mickey Wright, and this collection ensures that future generations will appreciate her not only as a defining character in the game’s history, but as an individual with diverse interests, passions and pursuits outside of golf.”

Specific highlights from the latest acquisition include:

- 1955 LPGA card, Wright’s rookie year on the LPGA Tour

- Medal from the 1964 Tall City Open, where Wright recorded the largest final-round comeback in LPGA Tour history (10 strokes)

- 1973 Colgate Dinah Shore first-place trophy from her last professional victory

- 2010 Bob Jones Award, the USGA’s highest honor

- Practice mat used by Wright at her home from 2011 until her death

- Approximately 10 scrapbooks and nearly 20 personal photo albums

- Thousands of pages of correspondence with family, friends and other golfers, as well as personal writings about her golf game and legendary swing

- Formica desk, lamp and adding machine with homemade sewn cover from her home in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

-Fishing rods, tackle boxes and lures

- Pottery wheel, self-hardening clay, sculpting tools and sculptures

- Materials from the life and playing career of Wright’s companion, Peggy Wilson

Wright’s initial collection has been on display at the USGA Golf Museum and Library since 2012, when she became the first woman – and fourth player – to be honored with her own exhibition room, joining Ben Hogan, Bob Jones and Arnold Palmer. Artifacts displayed in the Mickey Wright Room include the putter she used in 81 of her 82 professional wins, the complete set of clubs used throughout her career, and her champion’s cups from multiple USGA victories.

Earlier this year, in recognition of Wright’s exceptional competitive career, the USGA forever linked her name to the U.S. Women’s Open Championship by naming the gold medal presented each year to the winner in her honor. At the 2020 championship in December at Champions Golf Club, the first since Wright’s passing, the USGA will also recognize her contributions by displaying selected memorabilia and using a commemorative flag with her silhouette on No. 18 during the final round. Wright and Betsy Rawls are the only four-time winners of the championship.

In addition to the bequest of her estate and possessions to the Museum, Wright’s final wishes included being interred outside the Mickey Wright Room on the USGA campus. The USGA plans to honor those wishes with a celebration of her life to take place at a later date.

The USGA Golf Museum and Library is the nation’s oldest sports museum and the world’s leading institution for the collection, preservation, interpretation and dissemination of golf history. It is the most trusted repository for preserving the legacies of the game’s greatest champions.

Lauren Waidner, JP Roller Receive Sixth Annual Tom Cousins Award

Award Recognizes Outstanding Collegiate Golfers Who Excel in Academics, Are Engaged in Their Community

(ATLANTA) — The recipients of the 2020 Tom Cousins Award were announced Monday night in conjunction with the East Lake Cup in Atlanta, as Lauren Waidner (University of Florida) and JP Roller (Texas Tech University) received the sixth annual presentation of the award.

The honor recognizes a female and male collegiate golfer who best represent the values of the award: excelling in academics and engagement in the community.

Waidner (Fleming Island, Fla.) earned the distinction for her selfless commitment to several charitable causes, and she also took part in an internship last summer centered around pediatric hospital care. The experience ultimately led the senior psychology and biology major to join a volunteer program that includes weekly hospital visits to mentor critically ill youth.

Roller, a freshman for the Red Raiders, has taken part in several service projects in his hometown (Jenks, Okla.), utilizing golf as a fundraising vehicle for helping others in need. Roller’s efforts also led to him being awarded the Jerry Cole Sportsmanship Award in 2019, presented by the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA).

The Tom Cousins Award is named after developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, who laid out an aspirational blueprint to revitalize the East Lake community of Atlanta by providing cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness to break the cycle of poverty to create a holistic environment. East Lake now acts as a national model for community redevelopment through Purpose Built Communities for transforming a struggling community into a thriving neighborhood.

The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men’s and women’s golf national championships. On Monday, the eight teams competed in individual stroke play competition to determine the individual men’s and women’s champion and to seed for two days of match-play competition. Today and tomorrow, two match-play tournaments are being hosted simultaneously for the men’s and women’s divisions, with the semifinals taking place today and the finals and consolation matches on Wednesday.

Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and help children reach their highest potential. The East Lake Cup is one of the largest contributors to the East Lake Foundation, having raised more than $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since the tournament’s inception in 2015. ZipRecruiter and Uber Eats are the co-presenting sponsors of the East Lake Cup, with Bridgestone Golf, Mercedes-Benz and Topgolf serving as additional sponsors of the event.

Designs on a Better Golf Course released, providing “Practical answers to common questions for Green Committees”

New book from ASGCA Foundation addresses 50+ topics with engaging and entertaining information

(BROOKFIELD, Wis.) — Designs on a Better Golf Course: Practical answers to common questions for Green Committees, in now available on Amazon from ASGCA Foundation. The book, conceived and edited by ASGCA Past President Jeff Brauer, provides information on more than 50 topics over that may be raised by Green Committee members and other golf course decision makers as they consider improvements at their facilities.

The easy-to-read chapters in Designs on a Better Course are divided into 11 sections, including Renovations, Tees, Greens, Fairways and Roughs, Hazards, and Construction.

Designs on a Better Golf Course: Practical answers to common questions for Green Committees can be purchased on Amazon at https://tinyurl.com/y6yym523.

“This book provides helpful information for those making decisions about golf facilities,” said Brauer, who has written for numerous publications, including Golf Course Industry magazine. “Whether a Green Committee member, Superintendent or Course manager, having a basic understanding of how golf course architecture affects all aspects of your course and operation is a first step to a finished product that is more playable and profitable. That’s where this book comes in.”

Besides text, the book features a number graphics and charts, including the Life Expectancy for a course’s infrastructure, Maximum Slope for Green Speeds, suggested size for Tees and much more.

Author JJ Keegan previewed Designs on a Better Golf Course: “There were many fabulous things in this tome and some that surprised me,” he said. “The insights that ‘every design is a compromise’ and ‘The focus of some architects is to prevent what golfers want – a good score’ are among the candid comments that make this book a valuable resource. By itself, the charts on ‘Green Slope vs. Speed’ and ‘The Appropriate Size of the Green based on the Length of the Approach Shot,’ create fabulous guidance that validates why purchasing this book is a wise investment.”

Following is a brief sample from the chapter, “How do we Implement a Forward Tee Program or other Systems?” “Try to resist targeting any specific total course yardage over designing each hole for how different players really play golf and/or lengthening holes based on tradition or ‘gut feeling.’ Yes, the holes may become much shorter, but they probably need to, and that is the point of the program!”

“The information included in Designs on a Better Golf Course meets the ASGCA Foundation’s mission to ‘support the health of the game of golf by funding and administering programs that grow the game,’” said Foundation President Lee Schmidt, ASGCA. “Jeff was assisted on this project by a committee of ASGCA members who provided content, comment and perspective, including Nathan Crace, Richard Mandell, Greg Muirhead and John Sanford.”

Emirates Golf Federation Selected by IGF Membership to Host 2023 World Amateur Team Championships

(LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND)
– The International Golf Federation has announced that the Emirates Golf Federation will host the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships, as voted upon Tuesday during the IGF biennial meeting, which was held virtually.

This marks the first time the event, which dates back to 1958, will be held in the Middle East. The Emirates Golf Federation was selected over the Singapore Golf Association after the two were identified as the finalists by the IGF Bid Panel from an initial group of eight National Federation members that had expressed interest in hosting the biennial team event for men and women.

“Both candidates provided exceptionally strong bid proposals, which was duly noted by both the IGF Administrative Committee and the IGF Bid Panel,” said Antony Scanlon, Executive Director of the IGF. “We greatly appreciate the interest and strong case presented by the Singapore Golf Association. At the same time, the Emirates Golf Federation made a compelling case that resonated with our member organisations and we’re very excited to be holding our first World Amateur Team Championships in the Middle East region. We look forward to working with the Emirates Golf Federation to deliver a memorable event and experience for the athletes in 2023.”

The Emirates Golf Federation presented the Greg Norman-designed Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai as the host venue.

“It is an honor for the United Arab Emirates [UAE] and the Emirates Golf Federation to win the election for the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships,” said H.E. Shaikh Fahim Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Emirates Golf Federation. “We would like to thank the International Golf Federation and their team for working tirelessly with us on the bid application. We would also like to thank all of the IGF members for their votes and giving us this opportunity. We look forward to welcoming all of the delegates and athletes into the UAE. Golf in the UAE and region is continuing to grow and this event will further push our vision in golf development. We are excited to work with the IGF and our partners in making this championship a successful reality.”

In addition to being the first World Amateur Team Championships held in the Middle East, it also will be the first to be held with a reduced scope of one golf course and a maximum of 36 teams to lessen the cost and complexity of hosting the event, as approved at the IGF’s 2018 biennial meeting. Further, it will be the first to be held on an odd year to avoid same-year conflict with future Summer Olympic Games and Youth Olympic Games, following a decision by the IGF Administrative Committee to hold every future World Amateur Team Championships beyond 2022 on odd years.

Consequently, the World Amateur Team Championships will be held one time in consecutive years, with the 2022 Championships scheduled for two courses near Paris. Le Golf National, host of the 2018 Ryder Cup Match and future host of the 2024 Olympic golf competition, and Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, host of 33 editions of the Lancôme Trophy as well as other esteemed international tournaments, will host the men’s and women’s championships.

Dubai will represent the 30th women’s championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy and the 33rd men’s championship for the Eisenhower Trophy, in light of the cancellation of the 2020 World Amateur Team Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May, the IGF announced the cancellation of the event, which was scheduled for this month. That decision followed the IGF’s announcement in February that the event, originally to be held in Hong Kong, China, was moving to Singapore due to ongoing social unrest in Hong Kong.

First held in 1958, the World Amateur Team Championships include up to 72 countries competing in 72 holes of stroke play competition. Each country fields two or three players with the two lowest scores counting per round.

Get the gear you need to extend your season and play more golf in any condition

(RELEASE) — FootJoy, the #1 Outerwear brand in Golf, continues its commitment to Make Every Day Playable by offering golfers the best gear for staying dry, standing up to the elements and keeping you comfortable.

FJ offers the most complete rainwear lineup in golf, proven in the harshest conditions so you can perform your best.  The new HydroSeries line of rain jackets, featuring DryJoys Waterproof Technology, includes several options that provide the ultimate protection wherever you’re teeing it up this Fall.

The newest introduction to HydroSeries is the all-new HydroTour rain jacket, designed to withstand the most extreme weather conditions, featuring the proprietary DrySeal Technology.

DrySeal Technology is designed to withstand the most extreme weather conditions that you will find on a golf course.  Comprised of a double collar, DrySeal utilizes an inner collar system with a stay dry cinch cord that keeps rain out, as well as drainage grommets to move water away from the collar opening, delivering maximum waterproof protection.

Designed as FJ’s most innovative rain jacket, HydroTour features a 3-panel construction with fewer seams and premium, multi-directional stretch fabric, providing full range of motion throughout the golf swing while delivering maximum protection in cooler conditions.  The minimalist, yet highly protective jacket defends in cool, wet conditions and boasts a waterproof rating above 20,000mm of water column pressure, making HydroTour the perfect Spring or Fall rain jacket.

“We wanted to design a rain jacket that was the ultimate seal from the elements,” said PJ Skurla, Senior Apparel Designer.  “The combination of 3-panel construction with the DrySeal Technology collar minimizes any chance of rain water reaching the body, keeping you dry and comfortable in the worst conditions.”

PGA TOUR names Hyperice Official Recovery Device of the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions

Hyperice becomes first sponsor of PGA TOUR Active; will activate on course at TOUR events

(PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA) – The PGA TOUR and Hyperice, the industry leader in recovery technology and pioneer of percussion, vibration, dynamic air compression and thermal technology, announced a new multi-year partnership designating Hyperice as the “Official Recovery Device of the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions” and a “Sponsor of PGA TOUR Active.”

As part of the TOUR’s Official Marketing Partner program, Hyperice will activate and create custom content within PGA TOUR Active (www.pgatour.com/active), a new TOUR initiative highlighting health, fitness and lifestyles of professional golfers, where fans get an inside look into the techniques and activities helping the world’s best perform at their peak. The partnership will also introduce Hyperice’s range of products and technologies into the Player Performance Centers, state-of-the-art mobile fitness centers that travel with the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions to provide fitness equipment and care through its recovery technology to players on-site at tournaments throughout the season.

“As an industry leader in recovery technology, we couldn’t be more pleased to introduce Hyperice to the PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions players and trainers,” said Brian Oliver, PGA TOUR Executive Vice President of Corporate Partnerships. “By developing products inspired by professional athletes, and making recovery technology and education accessible to all, Hyperice will help ensure our elite athletes recover effectively to perform at their best each week over a long season.”

Founded in 2010, Hyperice has always centered its product development around the needs of athletes to aid in their pursuit of excellence by optimizing performance and expediting recovery, making innovative handheld percussion massage devices, vibrating foam rollers, heat and vibration wraps and ice compression wraps for training, faster muscle and tissue recovery.

Beyond this new partnership with the TOUR, Hyperice has also been heavily touted by professional athletes, recently welcoming professional golfer Rickie Fowler to join the lineup of influential, high-performing athletes who serve both as investors and ambassadors. The company is set to provide its flagship product, the Hypervolt, to TOUR players at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP @ SHERWOOD as well as every golfer on the PGA TOUR Champions and Korn Ferry Tour.

“Our partnership with the PGA TOUR is truly the first of its kind. In addition to delivering Hyperice recovery technology directly to players during tournaments to optimize performance, we’re able to give fans behind the scenes access to their favorite players’ health, fitness and recovery routines,” said Jim Huether, CEO of Hyperice. “Hyperice is committed to helping athletes worldwide move better and recover faster. Today’s announcement demonstrates the PGA TOUR’s commitment to elevating the sport and performance of its athletes. We’re also excited to have golf superstar Rickie Fowler join Hyperice as an ambassador and investor to help further advance our global health and wellness mission.”

"Hyperice has long been a part of my daily routine, so I’m very excited to have easy access to technology during play,” said Rickie Fowler, PGA TOUR Professional. “With fitness and body maintenance being a huge trend amongst us pros - especially during the time off at home - I love that the PGA TOUR has chosen the best in the business to share the importance of proper recovery to players, trainers and future generations of pros."

Throughout the partnership, PGA TOUR and PGA TOUR Champions players and trainers will receive the latest products, research and hands-on training from Hyperice to aid their recovery, enhance their performance and improve health and movement. Furthermore, the TPC Network will become a Hyperice retail partner, selling products on-site at its 16 owned and operated TPC courses around the United States.

In addition, this partnership will increase brand awareness for Hyperice’s newly launched App, powered by HyperSmart technology, which seamlessly blends physical and digital activity to create an experience entirely customized to the user. With its new Bluetooth and artificial intelligence platform, it can recommend routines for body maintenance, recovery and performance goals by analyzing users’ wearable data.
