‘From Many, One’ USGA Unveils New U.S. Open Brand Platform

(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – As part of the United States Golf Association’s ongoing commitment to invest in the U.S. Open and elevate the championship experience for players and fans, the Association today proudly unveiled its new U.S. Open brand platform, “From Many, One.”

“Our goal was to develop a distinct and powerful brand platform that allows us to celebrate what makes our championship unique and to tell the stories that drive our audiences to attend, watch and engage with the U.S. Open year-round,” said Craig Annis, chief brand officer of the USGA. “Given that the U.S. Open drives nearly 75 percent of the USGA’s revenue, the success of the championship directly impacts the work we do to support millions of golfers who enjoy the game.”

To help frame the creation of the brand platform, the USGA engaged key stakeholders over the course of the past year. Players (including some USGA champions), fans, media members, partners, representatives of host sites and volunteers were asked to share their thoughts on what makes the U.S. Open a one-of-a-kind major championship.

These constituents provided unique insights that included identifying the “open” nature of the championship, the grit and determination it takes to become a U.S. Open champion and the triumph of the human spirit as key attributes. Their insights led the USGA to the foundation of the platform, “From Many, One.”

‘From Many, One’: U.S. Open Brand Platform

The U.S. Open brand platform was developed in partnership with Culver City, Calif.-based Zambezi and is centered around a campaign line “From Many, One;” a new take on the motto “E Pluribus Unum” that will celebrate the nearly 10,000 golfers who will try to qualify for the championship, the 156 who will play and the one who will be crowned U.S. Open champion.
The premise of “From Many, One” is not a new one for the U.S. Open. It is something that was present at the first U.S. Open in 1895 and will be there in the future. It is the embodiment of the openness of the championship and a powerful connection to American values. It’s more than just a tagline, it’s the USGA’s guiding light, helping to provide our major championship with gravitas and focus.

“The most challenging assignments often turn out to be the most rewarding and this was no exception,” said Gavin Lester, chief creative officer of Zambezi. “To balance the heritage of a 120-year-old major championship, a modern audience, mental challenge, athletic triumph and American heritage in a campaign wasn't easy, but to see it all come to life has been unbelievably rewarding.”

“From Many, One” will extend far beyond television commercials, print and digital advertising as fans begin to “live the brand” through the U.S. Open. USGA social and digital platforms will feature videos, testimonials and other content that documents golfers’ journeys and allows fans to experience their hard work, grit and determination.

Fans on-site at Winged Foot Golf Club for this year’s U.S. Open will be immersed in the brand and the organization’s integrated approach to showcasing the championship as a glory-filled spectacle that the world is invited to see, feel and experience.

“The U.S. Open is more than a golf event, it’s more than a test or evaluation, it’s an experience that brings people together to share in the electricity that comes from players pushing themselves beyond their limits to achieve their dreams,” said Mike Davis, CEO of the USGA. “The brand platform will be the perfect vehicle to share the story of the U.S. Open, a celebration of the accomplishments of the players who compete for the championship and everyone who makes the event so special.”

Creative Work

Television Commercials and Print/Digital Advertisements:
Viewers of the NFL playoffs, NCAA basketball and NASCAR on Fox Sports enjoyed a preview of the brand campaign with the airing of a 15-second U.S. Open tune-in advertisement featuring actor Don Cheadle.

The Oscar-nominated Cheadle, who serves as a U.S. Open brand ambassador, lends his esteemed voice and stature to a variety of video content, including multiple U.S. Open brand television spots.

The first spot, “E Pluribus Unum, Baby,” is told from the perspective of a television viewer who is watching the greatest players in the game push themselves beyond their limits. E Pluribus Unum, Baby

Television and digital video viewers will be treated to multiple ad spots throughout the U.S. Open qualifying process, which begins in April. A series titled “From the Many: The U.S. Open Is…” features amateur golfers discussing their qualifying stories and the path that the “many” will take to get there. “From the Many: The U.S. Open Is…”

Vignettes featuring Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods, among others, highlight a series titled “From the Ones: The U.S. Open is…” These videos showcase past champions as they reflect on the significance of the U.S. Open and the moment that they became the “one.” “From the Ones: The U.S. Open is…”

Accompanying the television spots, the U.S. Open brand campaign will be highly visible to golf and sports fans in the United States where it will run on print and digital platforms. Centered around the ethos, “From Many, One,” the creative shares the tone of the television advertisements with a focus on the hard work and effort it takes to qualify for the U.S. Open and the odds stacked against becoming the U.S. Open champion. The creative will feature a competitive and gritty aesthetic and take on a sharp and witty tone. "From Many, One" creative assets.

Tickets and information for the 2020 U.S. Open Championship, scheduled for June 15-21 at Winged Foot Golf Club, in Mamaroneck, N.Y., can be found at usopen.com.

The 152nd Open To Be Played at Royal Troon

(St Andrews, Scotland) — The 152nd Open will be played at Royal Troon from 16-23 July 2023.

The occasion will mark the 100th anniversary of when The Open was first played at Royal Troon in 1923, which saw Arthur Havers defeat Walter Hagen by one stroke. It will also be the tenth time that golf’s original championship has been played over the famous Ayrshire links.

The Open was last held at Royal Troon in 2016 when Henrik Stenson memorably shot a superb final round 63 to hold off the challenge of Phil Mickelson in an unforgettable duel and win the Championship on a record 20-under-par total of 264.

Stenson joined a celebrated list of golfers who have lifted the famous Claret Jug and been crowned Champion Golfer of the Year at Royal Troon, including Havers, Bobby Locke, Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf, Tom Watson, Mark Calcavecchia, Justin Leonard and Todd Hamilton.

Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, “Royal Troon is one of the world’s greatest championships links. It has produced many memorable moments throughout the history of The Open including the dramatic duel between Henrik Stenson and Phil Mickelson that captivated millions of fans around the world in 2016.

“We are very much looking forward to celebrating another milestone in the cherished history of The Open when we mark the 100th anniversary of the Championship first being played at Royal Troon. It will be fascinating to see who will emerge from the world class field to lift the Claret Jug in 2023.”

The Captain of Royal Troon, Des Bancewicz, said, "We are delighted to welcome the return of the world's oldest major golf championship to Royal Troon and regard this as confirmation of the wonderful condition to which our historic links are maintained.

“The 152nd Open will also provide an excellent opportunity to celebrate 100 years of the Championship’s history at Royal Troon which commenced with Arthur Havers' victory in 1923."

Joe FitzPatrick, Minister for Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing, said, “I am delighted that The R&A has decided to hold The 152nd Open in Scotland, the Home of Golf, in 2023.

“Royal Troon will also play host to this year’s AIG Women’s British Open, further emphasising our strong relationship with The R&A and our collective support for women’s golf.”

Recent Acquisition by Concert Golf Partners Puts Award-Winning Club on Solid Footing

(Roswell, GA) – If there were ever a club reflecting the changing trends of the golf industry, it’s The Country Club of Roswell (CCR), a private club in this northern Atlanta suburb recently acquired by Concert Golf Partners. With more than 600 kids and a growing junior member population, CCR is the top-rated family club in Fulton County—and poised to get even better.

The club’s Vision 2025 plan includes a new children’s activities club, a splash pad for the kids and an adult bar at the pool, a golf simulator, new tennis court LED lights and clay court resurfacing, an outdoor dining courtyard, a refresh of the member lounge and ballroom, and a new irrigation system for the golf course. The recapitalization afforded by Concert Golf Partners will allow these projects and more to become a reality.

“With Concert Golf Partners’ ownership and financial resources, the club will be operated without assessments to future members,” said John Spiess, General Manager.  “This fact, coupled with the planned property improvements places the Country Club of Roswell in an enviable position of strength in this marketplace.”

The club’s robust schedule of ongoing events, children’s camps, and weekly activities is geared to all members of the family.  Among the more popular pursuits are an active swim team, extensive golf instructional programs, USTA and ALTA tennis leagues that dominate 13 lighted tennis courts, along with pickleball events. In addition, CCR offers a Kid’s Corner for drop-off childcare.

The 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Randy Nichols and voted best golf course in North Atlanta in 2018, is situated among rolling hills, lakes, streams and elegant homes.  With Bermuda grass fairways and Champions Ultra Dwarf Bermuda grass greens, the course plays 6593 yards from the tips, but has five sets of tees to appeal to golfers at all levels. The Club offers space for intimate gatherings of up to 400 for stand-up cocktail receptions. Venues include ballroom, full clubhouse and a garden, which doubles as a popular and photogenic wedding ceremony location.  The Club is perfectly situated for corporate meetings, weddings, bat and bar mitzvahs, holiday parties, family and school reunions.

“There’s something to engage every member of the family at our club,” added Spiess. “The best compliment we can receive from our members is when they tell us their children ask when they can go back to the club?”

VIDEO: Putting with the Wilson Duo Soft+

I posted a video of me chipping with the Duo Optix from Wilson Golf and was asked how the Duo Soft+ felt on/around the green. In a word: soft.

Both balls feel great and are worth a try. I always recommend buying several sleeves of balls and taking them out on the course for a personal test. After all, what works for Tiger, DJ or Rory, won't necessarily work for your game. The best part of these two options from Wilson ... They're only $19.99 a dozen. If nothing else, they're worth a try.

Check out www.wilson.com to learn more about both balls.

Swing Align Short Game Device Makes Consistent Scoring Shots a Lock

Innovative Swing Training Aid Promotes Better Form, Solid Contact and More Control

(Oceanside, CA) – To have excellent short game skills, golfers must hit shots around the green that have consistent contact and fly and land with quality distance control. Putts must be hit on the correct line and at proper speed to give them a chance to drop in the hole. To improve your short game, a consistent and connected swing, or stroke, is a must. With the help of the new wearable Swing Align Short Game training aid, any golfer can hit these critical shots effectively and repeatably.

Designed by the makers of the original breakthrough Swing Align training aid (which helps golfers improve and maintain alignment, rotation, swing plane and connection in the golf swing), Swing Align Short Game teaches golfers to maintain proper arm spacing and the all-important-triangle formed by the arms and shoulders.

Swing Align Short Game helps synchronize the arms to move at a consistent speed, allowing the bigger muscles to control shots for more repeatable results. Golfers prone to using their arms or hands to flip or swipe at the ball can quickly feel what it’s like to make well-struck wedge shots, pitches, chips and putts.

Swing Align Short Game fits easily across your chest and uses a highly-visible alignment rod with adjustable O-ring stops to create different arm-spacing options. The flexible cuffs are mounted with their openings facing out. Using light pressure to push the arm cuffs together against the stops helps you stay connected with your arms in a perfect triangle, producing a more controlled short game swing or putting stroke.

“So many golfers, even really good players, struggle with consistency in their short game. Swing Align Short Game is designed to help golfers remove the guesswork from scoring shots and replace it with consistent, repeatable techniques you can trust when it matters most,” says Chris McGinley, Swing Align co-founder and 30-year golf industry veteran. “Once you start hitting crisp shots and solid putts with better distance control, your confidence will soar and your scores will improve.”

Swing Align Short Game arm cuffs are secured with capture screws on either end of the rod to keep the cuffs from sliding off. This feature allows golfers to use Swing Align Short Game to hit full wedge and short iron shots, training you to control the length of your backswing and make well-connected swings.

“Repeatable distance control is the key to a great short game and lower scores. Swing Align Short Game is easy to use at home or at the golf course to develop consistency in your short game shots. You’ll soon trust your more controlled technique and see more shots land closer to the pin and more putts roll into the hole,” McGinley says.

Swing Align Short Game:
- Grooves a more repeatable short game swing and putting stroke
- Teaches short game connection, control and consistency
- Promotes better distance control on and around the green
- Helps all golfers learn, improve and maintain skills through a simple process
- Works for all short game shots: from full swings to pitches, chips and putts

AVAILABLE MARCH 2020

Easy to use at home or on the golf course, Swing Align Short Game teaches repeatable short game connection, control and consistency, which leads to more consistency in the scoring zone. Swing Align Short Game comes in two sizes and features adjustable foam pads to fit most golfers. The Short Game Rod can be purchased individually for golfers who already own a Swing Align device.

Swing Align Short Game is available for $124.95. For more information on Swing Align Short Game and to order the most versatile swing training device in golf, visit https://swingtrainer.com/products/swing-align-short-game.

Swing Align and Swing Align Short Game have been developed by golf industry veterans with more than 60 years’ experience, and with input from PGA Tour players as well as top golf instructors. Each device provides instant visual feedback and uses muscle memory to ingrain good habits.

A Golf Channel product, Golf Advisor has received more than 825,000 reviews of 14,000-plus golf courses.

Designed by Gene Bates, many who play Circling Raven equally enjoy the off-course accents. These include a vast, 25-acre driving range, a nationally honored golf shop, and the excellent Twisted Earth restaurant with bar at the clubhouse. Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort amenities and activities include the full-service Spa Ssakwa’q’n (SOCK-wah-kin); a variety of hotel rooms and suites; bars, restaurants, lounges, and eateries; cultural immersion options, and more. The casino completed a multi-million-dollar renovation nine month ago.

Traveling golfers often play Circling Raven and Coeur d’Alene Resort Course, located roughly 45 minutes apart. CDA Resort Course was ranked among the Top 5 in Idaho by Golf Advisor community members.

Circling Raven has garnered numerous best-in-kind honors since opening, including being rated as a Top 100 Resort Course, Best in State, and a Top U.S. Casino Course. Its golf shop has won national and regional awards for its excellence and its variety of products, displays, and performance.

(Los Angeles, CA) – TGA Premier Sports (TGA), the go-to brand for introducing children to the sport of golf and the nation’s most prolific provider of in-school- and community-based youth golf enrichment programs, has been named to Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 ranking, a distinction that the publication says indicates TGA is among companies “that continue to evolve to keep going strong year after year.”

The 41st annual Franchise 500 appeared in the January 2020 issue of Entrepreneur with TGA Premier Sports at No. 460 on the list. More than 1,100 companies applied for Franchise 500 consideration, which made the selection process the most competitive to date. Using a proprietary ranking formula called its “Five Pillars of the Franchise 500”, Entrepreneur analyzed key business factors when evaluating franchise opportunities, including costs and fees, size and growth, support, brand strength and financial strength and stability.

According to Entrepreneur, “More than forty years after the very first Franchise 500 ranking, the franchise industry is still going strong and more competitive than ever.” TGA was also listed among companies included in Entrepreneur’s list of “Hottest Franchise Categories for 2020,” in the Fitness Businesses category.

“Golf participation is grown at the local grassroots level through scalable, replicable and self-sustaining programs. TGA’s business model in the golf industry checks off all those boxes and it’s an honor to be recognized on Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 list. At No. 460, it makes us work even harder to climb the ladder businesswise while impacting more youth and families in their communities through golf,” says Joshua Jacobs, CEO of TGA Premier Sports.

The accolades continued to roll in with TGA’s recent inclusion in Franchise Business Review’s list of the “11 Top Rated Youth Sports Franchises Worth Investing In.” TGA came in at No. 2 on that ranking. Franchise Business Review surveys hundreds of franchisees, every year, from dozens of youth sports franchise brands. FBR then rates the top brands in the category based solely on franchisee satisfaction.

THE GOLF STORY AT OMNI LA COSTA RESORT & SPA

It all began in the early 1960s when a real estate developer from Las Vegas discovered an equestrian ranch nestled in the coastal foothills of Southern California. Originally conceived as a residential resort offering activities and instruction for all ages, La Costa’s 40 units were available to guests for $22 per night which included green fees, as well as access to tennis, horse stables and the pool.

La Costa’s original 7,200-yard, par-72 golf course was designed by renowned architect Dick Wilson. It covered 215 acres and cost $1.5 million to build. By the time the resort opened, it had already been selected to host the made-for-TV CBS Golf Classic. The greatest professional golfers of their day graced the links at La Costa, including Sam Snead, Ray Floyd, Arnold Palmer, Bobby Nichols, and Jack Nicklaus. Dick Wilson’s partner Joe Lee added nine holes in 1973 with the final nine holes opening in 1984.

The PGA TOUR’s Tournament of Champions (later called the Mercedes Championship and the Sentry Tournament of Champions) was hosted at La Costa from 1969 until 1998. The tournament included some of the greatest players in history like Phil Mickelson, Gary Player, Tom Watson and Tiger Woods. It also included some of the greatest moments in golf, like when a then 21-year-old Tiger Woods beat Tom Lehman with a near-ace on the first playoff hole, preceded by four consecutive closing birdies on the “Longest Mile” to get in to the playoff.

In 1999, the WGC Andersen Consulting World Match Play Championship was played on the original course layout with the opening nine composed of holes 10 through 18 on the Legends Course while the closing nine consisted of holes one through three and 13 through 18 on the Champions Course. The five-day televised event raised more than $500,000 for local charities.

Today, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa is a golfer’s paradise for members and resort guests and one of the ultimate vacation getaways in Southern California.

AHEAD, Nicklaus Companies Unveil Play Yellow Styles to Support Children's Miracle Network Hospitals

(New Bedford, Mass.) — Building on the resounding success of the inaugural Play Yellow campaign, AHEAD, the golf industry's leader in quality and creative headwear, and longtime partner Nicklaus Companies, will launch the 2020 Play Yellow headwear campaign coinciding with this year’s Honda Classic (February 24 to March 1).

The assortment will include a new, limited edition Play Yellow performance cap for which AHEAD collaborated with Jack Nicklaus to design. The hats, featuring the iconic Golden Bear logo and signature, as well as the Play Yellow logo, will be available for purchase at several PGA Tour events, selected Nicklaus courses, and online.  A portion of every sale will be donated to support Jack and Barbara Nicklaus's efforts helping pediatric care nationwide through the work of Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.

"There was such an overwhelmingly positive response the inaugural year of Play Yellow headwear that we certainly wanted to continue to support this campaign,” said Anne Broholm, CEO of AHEAD, which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2020.  “We wholeheartedly support Jack and Barbara’s passion for helping children. The Play Yellow campaign has inspired thousands and we are honored to play a role in its success.”

The inspiration for Play Yellow stems from the yellow shirts Jack often wore in the final round of tournaments in honor of Craig Smith, the son of a close Ohio family friend who was battling a rare bone cancer. Craig passed away in 1971 at the age of 13. Fifteen years later, on the morning of the 1986 Masters, Jack, at age 46, once again wore a yellow shirt, playing one of golf history’s most iconic rounds and winning his record sixth Green Jacket.

"Barbara and I are grateful to the team at AHEAD for joining us, the PGA TOUR, and many others in the Play Yellow effort to help make a difference in the lives of children, through Children's Miracle Network Hospitals," Nicklaus said. "Like us, AHEAD cares about giving back to children and families in need. They are not simply the best headwear company in golf, they are an organization of people with big hearts. Hats off to AHEAD!"

Barbara and Jack have a long history and close ties to a number of CMN Hospitals, most notably Nationwide Children’s Hospital in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio, and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami. The Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide has benefited Nationwide Children’s Hospital since its inception in 1976, and it was The Honda Classic’s move to Palm Beach County near their home base that inspired the Nicklauses’ to create the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation in 2004.

'The Dye' National Junior Invitational Tournament to Honor Legacy of Pete and Alice Dye

Crooked Stick Golf Club – home to the Dyes and their “firstborn” championship course – to stage inaugural event May 25-27, 2020

(CARMEL, IND.) – Members of Crooked Stick Golf Club today announced they will stage a boys and girls tournament to honor the lives and legacies of its founders, champion golfers and world-renowned course designers Pete and Alice Dye. The unveiling of the event – a year in the planning – comes just weeks after the January 9th passing of Pete Dye at the age of 94.

The inaugural Pete and Alice Dye Junior Invitational – “The Dye” – will be contested May 25-27 at the famed Dye-created and designed Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., an Indianapolis suburb. Top-ranked junior amateurs – a field of 33 boy and 33 girl junior players from across the U.S. – will compete for the championship in 54 holes of medal play and for points from World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), National Junior Golf Scoreboard (NJGS) and Golfweek Sagarin Junior Rankings.

The field of 33 boys and girls is a nod to the number of cars in the Indianapolis 500, which is being staged a day ahead of The Dye and just a few miles south of Crooked Stick. Top juniors (aged 18 and younger in 2020) from 15 states have accepted invitations and are scheduled to compete. Players include Michael Brennan, John Daly, Jr. (son of ’91 Crooked Stick PGA champ John Daly), Alexa Pano, Katherine Schuster and dozens of other top junior players.

“Pete and Alice Dye were both elite level amateur players and began winning tournaments as juniors,” said Wayne Timberman, tournament chairman. “The Dye is the only national invitational where elite boy and girl golfers play for a major title on the same Top 100 course at the same time,” he said. “Crooked Stick members are thrilled to honor the Dyes with a world class tournament in a unique format. ‘The Dye’ is truly one-of-a-kind, just like Pete and Alice!”

Details about the inaugural Pete and Alice Dye Junior Invitational at Crooked Stick can be found at the championship website: www.dyejuniorinvitational.com and on the event’s social media channels: @TheDyeJunior (Twitter), thedyejuniorinvitational (Instagram) and @TheDyeJuniorInvitational (Facebook).

Cordillera Ranch Golf Course Re-Opens Following Greens Resurfacing Project

Jack Nicklaus Signature Design the First 18-Hole Layout in Texas with Pure Distinction Greens

(BOERNE, Texas) – Cordillera Ranch – the acclaimed and top-rated luxury golf club and community in the Texas Hill Country –  re-opens its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course following a greens conversion to Pure Distinction bentgrass.

The project, which began in September, included re-sodding each putting surface with the innovative Pure Distinction bentgrass. Developed 15 years ago, Pure Distinction is fast becoming the premier strain, offering the exceptional roll unique to bentgrass, enhanced traits that tolerate heat, humidity and disease more effectively, and a density so tight it mitigates encroachment from other aggressive and unwanted grasses such as poa annua.

Through the re-surfacing, Cordillera Ranch becomes the only Lone Star State layout with Pure Distinction on all its greens. Other elite private clubs with Pure Distinction putting surfaces include major championship venue Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa and Essex Golf and Country Club in Canada, often considered one of the top-100 courses in the world.

“We first witnessed the superb conditions of Pure Distinction on a putting green at Vaquero Country Club in Southlake where they have been testing the turf’s qualities,” says Charlie Hill, President and CEO of DH Investments, the developer of Cordillera Ranch. “The turf looked and rolled so exceptional it almost didn’t appear to be real.

“We then tested it by installing Pure Distinction on two holes on the course that have some of the tougher microclimates this past August, which, given the extended summer last year, put the grass’s tolerance to a tough early test. The turf passed with flying colors – it looked incredibly healthy even after two months of above-average heat and humidity. It’s a super-aggressive growing grass, hardy, has strong roots and tolerates the summer heat better than other bentgrass.”

During the course’s closure, Cordillera Ranch tackled other projects such as drainage improvements, tree trimming and clearing. These projects will help improve the grass-growing environment and playability of the course for many years.

“With a project like this, we wanted to be sure we encompassed everything – from the soil below to the grass on top – and that we did it right,” Hill adds. “The new greens will enhance the golf experience for our members and their guests, and enhance our standing as one of the best courses in Texas.”

Stretching to over 7,400 yards for those wanting the ultimate test or 6,800 yards for the member looking to enjoy a challenge while soaking in the Texas Hill Country views, Cordillera Ranch’s golf course meanders along ridges and through valleys and oak-covered terrain. Many holes offer long views of the Guadalupe River Valley and feature strategic bunkering, craggy limestone outcroppings and canyons, winding creeks and thought-provoking risk-reward shots. The Dallas Morning News consistently ranks the Cordillera Ranch golf course in the top-10 of its Texas Golf ranking of the state’s best layouts, and lists the par-3 16th hole among the state’s “Best” and “Most Beautiful” golf holes.

Re-sodding its greens with Pure Distinction is another example of Cordillera Ranch setting the standard for upscale private golf clubs and communities. Cordillera Ranch pioneered the on-site, resort-style clubs and amenities that is now prevalent among the newer clubs, and was one of the first in Texas to feature the drought-tolerant Zeon Zoysia on the golf course’s fairways and tees.

“Traditionally, clubs that resurface the greens elect to go the more cost-efficient route of seeding them; however, we evaluated the options and determined that we wanted to get the course re-opened as fast as possible,” says Marc DeWall, General Manager of the Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. “We felt we could open in 2-3 months, if we re-sodded while seeding it would have probably taken 5 to 7 months. Despite the significant additional investment, it was worth it to get the course back in play quickly for members and their guests.”

In 2019, the community unveiled several new or updated amenities for its members. Situated on the third hole of the golf course and a short golf cart ride from its award-winning clubhouse, The Lodges at Cordillera Ranch opened this past August and provide upscale accommodations for members and their guests.

The newly opened Golf Performance Center at Cordillera Ranch offers two hitting bays, one featuring a Flightscope Launch Monitor and a three-camera system. The Golf Performance Center at Cordillera Ranch also is one of the few facilities in Texas to feature the Swing Catalyst 3D Motion Plate.

The club’s fitness center was recently renovated, complete with a reconfiguration of the facility, new program offerings and updated exercise equipment. The Vista Office and Visitor Center, housing the offices of Cordillera Ranch Realty, DH Investment Company, Pasadera Builders and the Cordillera Ranch Property Owners Association, also recently opened.

Cordillera Ranch has earned a reputation as one of the country’s finest upscale communities. Nearly 800 homes are completed (and more than 1,300 lot sales) in the community. At final build-out, Cordillera Ranch will total approximately 2,500 homes and preserve 80% of the land in its natural state.

Ranch San Lucas GC Opens in Cabo

Multi-themed Greg Norman Signature design is a lay-of-the-land gem

(LOS CABOS, Mexico) – Centerpiece of an 834-acre resort and residential community fronting a pristine stretch of beach on the Pacific Ocean 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas, the Greg Norman Signature golf course at Rancho San Lucas has opened for play.

Known for his ‘least-disturbance’ design approach, Norman has created a low-profile, links-style layout that features sweeping ocean views from every hole. Earthmoving was kept to a minimum: the site’s contours and topography, Norman said, were ideal for the routing of a world-class course.

Spanning three different ecosystems, the 7,210-yard, par-72 golf course rambles through huge windswept dunes at the start, climbs through a thick cactus forest creased by meandering arroyos in the middle of the round, and returns players to the beach and sea on the back nine.

Tailored to the site’s terrain, Norman and his design team integrated indigenous landscapes and grass varietals that use the least amount of water, creating an eco-friendly golf experience that flows naturally with the dune and desert landscape. The club has applied for enrollment in Audubon International’s Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses.

“Rancho San Lucas is the most spectacular piece of oceanfront property I’ve seen in a long time, so to have the opportunity to build a course on this site was truly once-in-a-lifetime,” Norman said. “My goal was to keep it as natural as possible while showcasing the site’s arroyos, dunes and view corridors. We wanted to build a sustainable course that is playable from all perspectives, including the forward tees. We’re committed to making a global impact by creating courses that withstand the test of time, and I truly believe this golf course is one of the best we’ve ever built.”

The layout’s defining characteristic is its revetted pot bunkers. These sharp-edged, steep-walled sandy pits were constructed from recycled artificial turf and are nearly identical to the natural sod-walled bunkers found on British links courses. Resistant to washouts, the club’s synthetic, low-maintenance bunkers are a first in Mexico. Norman used them sparingly.

Tees, greens and fairways at Rancho San Lucas are surfaced in paspalum, a salt- and drought-tolerant cultivar that uses a fraction of the insecticides and fertilizer required by normal grasses.

The versatile, well-groomed layout has five sets of tees and offers exceptional pace and variety. The par 5’s are brawny, the par 3’s are varied. The par 4’s, angled to all compass points, range from long and stout to short and fun.

Featuring a dramatic 300-foot elevation change, the well-strategized course has a handful of holes on the beach, notably the par-3 third, which parallels the sea and will give players fine views of breaching whales during the winter months. There’s also a signature island green at the par-3 17th hole. Corridors are wide and targets are generous: four of the putting surfaces exceed 12,000 square feet.

Mindful of the seasonal windy conditions, Norman devised a 12-hole ‘course within a course’ at Rancho San Lucas. This innovative 4,964-yard, par-49 layout consists of low-lying holes sheltered by the dunes and shielded from Pacific breezes. It promises a pleasant outing on a windy day in May.

Rancho San Lucas is a private club with exclusive access available to guests of Solmar Group hotels, including the new on-site Grand Solmar Rancho San Lucas Hotel & Resort.
