Patriot Golf Day Kick-Off with President George W. Bush

For the seventh consecutive year, thousands of PGA Professionals and USGA members are participating in Patriot Golf Day this Labor Day Weekend (August 30-Sept. 2) collecting donations and raising awareness for the Folds of Honor Foundation, a national non-profit organization that provides educational scholarships and other assistance to the families of service men and women killed or disabled while serving our great nation.

More than 4,900 golf facilities across the country are registered to participate in Patriot Golf Day. Visit  PatriotGolfDay.com to find a participating facility near you.

There are more than one million dependents of fallen and wounded military service men and women from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts alone and 87 percent do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance (as of January 2012). The Folds of Honor Foundation wants to help ensure that no family is left behind in the field of battle, making sure that we honor their sacrifice and educate their legacy.

Below are photos from this morning's official kickoff of Patriot Golf Day with President George W. Bush, honorary chairman, Major Dan Rooney, PGA, creator of Patriot Golf Day, Wesley, Ryann and Ellie Bauguess, Lee Trevino and FOX & Friends host Brian Kilmeade.  Ryann and Ellie are Folds of Honor scholarship recipients.

TaylorMade Golf Unveils New Ghost Tour Series Putters

Emphasis on Craftsmanship and Detail in Seven Tour- Proven Shapes

(CARLSBAD, CALIF.) – TaylorMade Golf announced an entirely new collection of Ghost Tour Series putters with the release of seven Tour-proven shapes – each one a work of art engineered to deliver great feel, alignment aid and a smooth, accurate roll.

The Ghost Tour Series line-up, already in play on tours worldwide, consists of three blade-style putters (Daytona 12, Daytona 62 and Sebring 62) and four mallets (Maranello 81, Fontana 72, Monte Carlo 12 and Corza 72).

TaylorMade designers and product development experts have seen great results with high-MOI and counterbalanced putters. The Ghost Tour Series was created to appeal to golfers who prefer traditional putter shapes and weighting – a group that accounts for at least half of all players.

At the same time, TaylorMade has created a line-up that is aesthetically pleasing in its detailed design.

“We spent a full year perfecting every detail on our Ghost Tour putters, making each one a thing of beauty, elegance and excellence,” said Brian Bazzel, TaylorMade’s director of iron, wedge and putter development.  “Golfers will be blown away when they set each of these putters down for the first time, and again when they experience the performance.”

Aesthetically, golfers will notice the craftsmanship that each Ghost Tour Series model provides.  All models feature a premium black ion plating on the sole as well as a coat of durable white paint to provide contrast benefits against the green. The strong black parallel lines on the trailing edge form the first and second read alignment system to further reinforce accurate alignment.

Additionally, each model features a chrome stepless shaft and a tour-preferred TaylorMade rubber grip – two small additions rarely found in a putter under $150. For the first time, golfers have the option to upgrade to the same shaft in matte black for an additional $40, a finish used by players on the PGA Tour to help reduce glare.

Yet another new feature in this series is a multi-material 8020 PureRoll insert (80% Surlyn/20% aluminum) to promote smooth roll, keen distance control and a profound feel.

Ghost Tour Series putters are priced at $149 each and offered in lengths of 33”, 34” and 35”. Retail availability for the Ghost Tour Series begins Sept. 1. The Corza 72 model is available 11/1. For more information, visit taylormadegolf.com.

Mizuno Boosts Shotmaking Capabilities with New 'Pure Muscle' MP-4 Iron

Delivering the purist looking muscle back design, these 'player' irons offer decisive feel and incredible ball control

(Norcross, Ga.) - Mizuno USA, a world-class leader in golf technology and development, has officially released the highly-touted MP-4 irons to market, the company's purest "player" iron to date. Designed to deliver a longer, softer sense of impact for unparalleled playability in the long irons and maneuverability in the short irons, the Grain Flow Forged® MP-4 is the purist forged muscle back on the market.

The "pure muscle" design of the MP-4 iron is a perfectly balanced geometric design that keeps the thickness behind impact to deliver a crisp, solid feel. The high-quality 1025E Pure Select mild carbon steel and Mizuno's patented Grain Flow Forging process combined further enhance the iconic Mizuno feel that is a shotmaker's dream.

"The MP-4 is a pure 'players iron' that is expected from Mizuno with a few surprises," said Chuck Couch, VP of Product Management, Golf Division. "Simple, smart shifts in design and the muscle bulge provides golfers ultimate control of their ball flight while offering an extremely 'pure' feel at impact as any iron we've developed. If you're in the game of shotmaking, the MP-4 irons are the right irons for you."

Incorporated in the new "pure" design are proven Mizuno technologies:
- H.I.T. (Harmonic Impact Technology) for precise control of vibration frequencies at the point of impact
- VMT (Variable Muscle Thickness) measured to create a consistent height in the sweetspot for easier workability in the short irons and optimal launch trajectory in the long irons.
- Tour-proven sole design, also featured in past models, offers subtle relief areas with a rounded leading edge and cambered trailing edge to ensure perfect turf interaction.

A double-nickel chrome plating underscored by an assertive Mizuno "Run Bird" in the center of the muscle pad, provides an elegant and durable finish

"We dissected the MP-4 iron like the MP-4 player dissects the game," said Couch. "The insights we uncovered delivered an unmatched better player's tool and ultimately resulted in an iron that will knock down flags."

Troon facilities join together to help fight cancer

(SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.) - Troon the leader in upscale golf course management, development and marketing is pleased to announce that Troon-managed facilities will join the effort in fighting cancer by raising awareness about the importance of early detection.

During the entire month of September, which is officially National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Troon daily-fee and private facilities will fly a light blue checkered flag on every 18th green to remind golfers about the importance of detecting prostate cancer early. Likewise in October, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink pin flags and cups will be used to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention screening exams.

Organized through Troon Drives H.O.P.E., which empowers Troon’s facilities and associates to make a positive impact on their communities, the effort is designed to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of prostate and breast cancer. The American Cancer Society reports that 77% of all cancers are diagnosed in those who are 55 years and older, making the message of early detection especially relevant to golf’s core demographic.

“Nearly everyone has found themselves faced with challenges brought on by cancer, whether battling it themselves or standing beside a friend or loved-one who has,” stated John Easterbrook, executive vice president, operations, Troon. “We believe this collective effort by Troon facilities will serve as a powerful reminder about the importance of detecting cancer before any symptoms are noticed.”

The American Cancer Society also claims that cancers found as a result of their symptoms are often larger and more likely to spread. Early detection exams can catch cancer before symptoms start, and are believed to save thousands of lives each year. Doctors believe that even more lives could be saved if more people took advantage of these exams.

Atlantic City: Time to Play, Time to Pause

Atlantic City affords golfers a cornucopia of fall fun, challenging layouts, famed history and jaw-dropping scenery

(ATLANTIC CITY. N.J.) — Golf is a one-shot-at-a-time, stay-in-the-moment endeavor — or at least, it would appear that way on TV. Yet, while focus almost assuredly helps your game, sometimes the recreational golfer benefits more by diverting attention away from the task and soaking up the surroundings instead.

When it comes to surreal surroundings, rest assured — there is no better place than “down the shore” in New Jersey. Indeed, across the wide range of courses that make up the Greater Atlantic City Golf Association, distraction comes in a wide variety: It can be skyline vista; a setting sunset; a blue heron standing guard over a natural wetland; an old fishing boat dry-docked in a waste bunker.

Three of the more iconic vantage points along the Jersey Shore are found at any time of the day along the closing stretch of holes at Atlantic City Country Club, on the green of the par-4 second hole at the Stockton Seaview Resort and Golf Club’s Bay Course and — when the sun starts to fall — from one side of the par-5 ninth hole at Twisted Dune Golf Club.

And make no mistake, as vibrant as golf in and around Atlantic City can be during the spring and summer months, it can be just as exhilarating — perhaps more so — in the autumn. Maybe it’s the shortening days and the sense of urgency to squeeze in a few more rounds. Maybe it’s the turning colors on the leaves. Or maybe it’s just the crisp, cool air blowing across still-warm waters that makes the fall a great time to get away and golf.

For those looking for a fun escape at value-laden package prices, here is sampling of the more colorful golfing options awaiting you in the Greater Atlantic City region:

Harbor Pines – Linked to the Future

Developed with homes, nature and golf in mind (125 acres are protected for wildlife), Harbor Pines Golf Club & Estates is the ultimate in land and residential planning.

“We refer to it not as links golf, but ‘linked up’ golf,” said the club’s vice president, Mitchell Gurwicz. “Harbor Pines is a resort-style course with wide fairways, trees, well-manicured corridors and not a lot of forced carries. There are 13 ponds, 120 bunkers and the tees are set up to across five sets.”

But the real fun of Harbor Pines starts on the greens.

“They are the great equalizer on this course,” added Gurwicz. “They average 6,500 square feet. Once you think you have a hole licked, you land on the green and you have to think it all through again. That’s what makes it fun. These are not postage stamp greens.”

Developed with the upscale, daily fee golfer in mind and designed by Stephen Kay, Harbor Pines still provides a private club experience with a Carolina feel to it.

Ballamor – At Home in the “Pods”

Just a few years removed from its private club upbringing, Ballamor Golf Club is poised to shed its hidden gem designation. A traditional parkland-style course, Ballamor was built into the woods with no houses surrounding golfers on the course. In the fall, this is particularly important as the layout actually reminds some players of Carolina’s Pinehurst courses.

With its unique “pod” setup (four different sections characterize the layout), there’s a lot of wooden bridgework to be negotiated on the Dan Schlegel (then with Ault, Clark & Associates) design.

“[Ballamor] is very nice,” said one recent golfer soon after his inaugural round on the course. “I’ll definitely be back.”

On your way into the region, golfers should also make time for a round at Scotland Run, Ballamor’s sister course located in Williamstown. Of note, both likeable layouts rank among Golfweek’s Top 10 Best Courses You Can Play in New Jersey.

Blue Heron Pines – The Golfer’s Sanctuary

Not one but two replica holes from famed Pine Valley, the New Jersey icon consistently ranked among the world’s best, can be found at Blue Heron Pines Golf Club. Architect Stephen Kay patterned Blue Heron’s No. 14 off Pine Valley’s seventh and he similarly replicated a PV hole on his No. 10 offering.

Opened in 1993, Blue Heron Pines’ mature layout is tree-lined, sports some nice water holes and has its share of strategically placed bunkers. The back nine is considered the more challenging of the two, though it is also the more secluded and makes for an extremely pleasant and peaceful conclusion to a round of golf.

Kay also planned Blue Heron as a good walker’s course — more like a private club experience. Hole No. 14 is popular, with almost 100 yards of waste area lining the par 5 from 280 yards out. This one-acre sand hazard is a highlight to a four secluded-hole string beginning on No. 13 all the way to No. 16. According to Kay, A.W. Tillinghast was the inspiration for the sand hazard, having called one a “great hazard.”

A certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, Blue Heron is currently celebrating its first year under the ownership of Ron Jaworski, famed Philadelphia Eagles quarterback now NFL analyst for ESPN. Nicknamed “Jaws,” his roots in golf course ownership and management also run deep and include another Atlantic City offering in Running Deer Golf Club.

Hamilton Trails – Happily Rolling Along

As a nine-hole course normally played in less than two hours, Hamilton Trails Golf Club may not have all the bells and whistles of others in the Greater Atlantic City region, but that doesn’t mean it is short on challenge. It is certainly light on the wallet with nine-hole rates ranging from $14 to $18 the remainder of the year.

Coupled with one of the best practice ranges in the area, Hamilton Trails is an ideal venue for novice golfers or players interested in a quick round. Routed across a former blueberry farm, the track is sporty and fun. It is also heavily tree-lined, producing an especially colorful challenge as the season begins to wind down.

“There are a lot of unique holes out here,” said owner and operator Andrew Bucceri, who also serves as the course superintendent. “It is pretty flat, so the locals like to walk. The highest point is on hole No. 4.”

As the only regulation length nine-hole course in South Jersey (it is also centrally located in Mays Landing), Hamilton Trails can also serve as a nice add-on to any one of several nearby 18-hole courses. Together, they would make for a varied and fun-filled 27-hole day of golf — and ideal for any autumn getaway.

Carolinas PGA: Giving Back to the Game

Carolinas PGA (CPGA) Section raised more money for Patriot Golf Day than all its national peers a year ago

(GREENSBORO, N.C.) — John Faidley’s stomach still knots up thinking back to four years ago, in the days and weeks leading up to his very first Celebrity Pro-Am fundraiser. Forsyth Country Club’s head golf professional remembers like yesterday saying to his wife, “Well, we’ve made the commitment. Now we’ve got to pull this thing off.”

Faidley, PGA, and his team have more than “pulled off” the two-day pro-am over the Donald Ross design at Winston-Salem’s Forsyth CC, where Faidley has served as head golf professional for 12 years. They have turned the Forsyth Country Club Celebrity Pro-Am — featuring numerous ACC and local sports legends and other celebrities — into the biggest fund-raiser of the year for the First Tee of the Triad, which teaches children about golf while also imparting life lessons.

The now four-year-old event has helped raise nearly $400,000 for First Tee of the Triad. “Without what Forsyth Country Club does with this fund-raiser,” says Mike Barber, president and CEO of the First Tee of the Triad, “we wouldn’t be able to do what we do.”

“There are numerous examples of good deeds being quietly performed by golf professionals around the Carolinas, who use their positions and venues as a springboard for giving back to the game they love,” says Ron Schmid, PGA, executive director of the Carolinas PGA (CPGA), the largest of the PGA’s 41 sections nationwide.

In 2012, the CPGA raised a record-breaking $515,000 for the Folds of Honor Foundation through various Patriot Golf Day activities — which will again take place this Labor Day Weekend — and the section received the prestigious Freedom Warrior award for those efforts. These are just a few of the many ways the CPGA is helping give back to the game of golf.

Caring, Giving, Golfing

The truth lay in a clubhouse room full of silent auction items and door prizes for the annual Richard L. Byrne Memorial Golf Tournament held each spring at Scotch Meadows Country Club in Laurinburg, N.C.

Somewhere.

Oh, there it is, among the golf collectibles table. The sign reads: “Time spent golfing is not deducted from one’s lifespan.”

That being the case, then all of those participants in this heartwarming two-day charity event are sure to live even longer and more fruitful lives than they are due.

“It’s really a huge event,” says PGA head golf professional Chip Wells about the tournament, which has raised more than $3 million in donations since its inception 28 years ago. “I don’t know of anything/anywhere quite like this in the Carolinas.”

Even Wells, who has helped run every Byrne tournament to date, has a hard time comprehending its success. When asked, he recalled this past spring’s contributions were in the $135,000 neighborhood.

The event – sponsored by the Eaton Golf Pride Company – actually raised almost $154,000 for a team of experts committed to providing excellent medical care for area patients and families through the Hospice of Scotland County.

“See, it’s always bigger than even I can believe,” Wells adds when corrected. “It really has become a big event for our community.”

Wells became head golf professional at Scotland Meadows in 1985 and a year later Byrne — an employee at Eaton Golf Pride — went to work rounding up sponsors for a charity, fund-raising event. Five or six years into the tournament, Byrne passed away. Still, his legacy lives on in ways he probably never imagined.

“He probably secured $80,000 to $90,000 in sponsor money before we ever hit a golf ball,” adds Wells. “It’s crazy. Golf Pride’s connection with its vendors is one way to make money during the silent auction. It’s really a huge event.”

The tournament also gets a wealth of support from the Hospice headquarters.

“The donations go to Hospice, and so we get a lot of volunteer help from its office,” Wells says. “They also go out and round up sponsors, trips and door prizes.”

And, of course, they all do a wonderful job on the days of the actual tournament itself — making everyone’s life involved in the event a touch more meaningful.

Back on Track

Greg McBride, PGA golf professional at Northwood’s Golf Club in Columbia, S.C., possesses a rather “eclectic” circle of friends and acquaintances.

Some of the more colorful characters include the “Ball Coach” Steve Spurrier from the nearby University of South Carolina, the “Designer” P.B. Dye, and the newest member of McBride’s inner circle, PGA Tour player Tommy “Two Gloves” Gaine. But of all the people he runs across in his day-to-day world, it is one of McBride’s earliest connections that is buzzing the loudest around the Carolinas these days.

This past year, George Rogers – the University of South Carolina’s only Heisman Trophy winner back in 1980 (not counting Spurrier’s from 1966 while playing at Florida) – asked him to help tighten up operational components for his George Rogers Celebrity Golf Tournament held at Fort Jackson Golf Club in Columbia.

“Greg stepped in and got it back on track,” says Mike Casto, the PGA pro at Fort Jackson Golf Club, who credits McBride for “saving the day” for the tournament.

Though McBride downplays his involvement — recognizing that it takes an army of organizers to pull off such an event — he said he was more than happy to help out with several behind-the-scenes needs like ordering hats and towels; working with vendors; organizing check-in and registration; helping with the pairings; and overseeing other tournament set up niceties like breakfast, balls on the driving range, and tee gifts.

“They all sound like such easy things,” says McBride, “but if you are not ready for everything, it doesn’t look so good.”

With McBride’s “Gamecock Pride,” the latest George Rogers Tournament must have looked pretty smooth. The tournament, in conjunction with an auction, raises money for the George Rogers Foundation, which provides financial assistance to students, and financial support to Youth Development Nonprofit Organizations in the Carolinas.

You see, McBride, now entering his 23rd year as the head pro at Northwoods (a P.B. Dye design), first met Rogers the year he was a freshman on the golf team at USC and Rogers was carving up defenses as a senior.

“Me being a freshman and he being a senior, we really didn’t pal around,” says McBride. “But George was best friends with teammate [talented free safety] Robert Perlotte who I knew back in high school. Neither one had a car – so they would borrow mine.”

When McBride returned to Columbia as a golf professional in 1990, he rekindled his relationship with Rogers through various golf-related adventures, among them playing in Rogers’ celebrity tournament.

But it wasn’t until this year that McBride’s keen eye for detail really became vital.

“I helped out because [Rogers] is such a nice guy,” says McBride. “He does charity things for me and he’s just an awesome guy. I’ve got a golf course and am in the golf business and so I can give something back. I guess you could say I’m just an ‘Old Gamecock.’ I really just helped him as a friend.”

According to McBride, the fact that the event was not held at his home course made his role a lot easier — for both him and Casto.

“Being independent of all the other people made my job pretty easy,” says McBride. “That way I could just become a helper and take a little pressure off Mike. It made it easier for both of us the way it was arranged. Mike then could be more of an overseer rather than having to resort to panic attack. That was my focus for both Mike and George – to help them be a little more organized on the golf side of things. Still, everyone did a great job around me too.”

For Rogers a properly run tournament means the world — especially one that has been around for moving on a quarter century.

“After I got out of the NFL, I tried to figure out a way that I could give back,” says the former New Orleans Saint and Washington Redskin. “I wanted to be able to give money back. So we started playing golf. Through the tournament and the foundation, I’ve been able to help these kids go to school and that’s what it is all about, making sure these kids get an education. Because, you know, if they don’t have that education, they have lost.”

As McBride likes to put it: “We are Gamecock people.”

Refusing to Coast

Teaching golf to kids takes a special individual — one with an intricate blend of knowledge, passion, discipline, a fun loving nature and reflexes to get out of the way of an occasional reckless swing of the club or a wayward golf ball.

As they say in the business: “Always keep your head on a swivel.”

Seems to have been the exact mold from which Perry Green was cut.

“I began the PGA apprentice program right out of college after getting a job as second assistant at Rockford (Illinois) Country Club in 1976,” says Green. “No one else wanted to run the junior golf program so it was placed in my lap as low man on the totem pole. I loved it and kept myself in charge of junior programs everywhere I went.”

Now as the PGA Director of Instruction for Wescott Plantation Golf Club in North Charleston, S.C., Green has seen some of those first students go on to become state high school champions, some go on to play college golf, and more than a dozen go on to become PGA or LPGA teaching professionals all around the country. One of those first juniors even became a community leader in his hometown of Rockford and led an effort to recruit Green back to the Midwest after having migrated south for his first stint in South Carolina. In 2002, he became the Director of Instruction for the Rockford Park District’s five golf courses.

One of the ongoing projects at was the creation of a First Tee program — the success of which would eventually lead him back to the Carolina coast.

“Our community leaders raised a lot of money and bought an entire inner city block in a tough area of town, knocked down houses that were known for drug trafficking and built a netted and fence-enclosed green space junior practice facility,” says Green. “In coordination with the park district, we revamped one of the driving ranges so it could also serve as a junior golf course and short game practice center.
“I was the first programming director for The First Tee of Greater Rockford from 2003 to 2006. During that time I attended several First Tee coaches training classes around the country. With the Rockford programs expanded and running, I decided to move back to the Charleston area.”

And Green, a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., where he played both basketball and golf, has been continuing his drive along the Atlantic Coast ever since. In addition to his duties at Wescott Plantation, he is a coach at the First Tee of Greater Charleston where he arranged for his club to become an affiliate site for the program in 2008.

Another accomplishment of his includes the founding of the Charleston chapter of the LPGA/USGA Girls Golf that rapidly grew into the largest in the state from 2007 to 2008. To further illustrate his influence, the Wescott First Tee classes have grown from one class per week with four participants to today where eight classes are offered per week benefiting more than 70 participants.

“The kids learn life skills taught seamlessly with golf skills,” says Green.

In early 2014, Green will be attending Level III First Tee coaches training, the last level before the title of Master Coach, the highest level for the First Tee. So the beat goes on for the tireless instructor, whose impact still resonates across two contrasting yet golf-rich portions of the country.

“I began teaching golf to kids because no one else would do it,” adds Green, who in 2010 was named the Carolinas PGA Junior Golf Leader along with other accolades. “I’ve turned it into my life's work. I wouldn't want it any other way.”

General's Ridge Golf Course Installs Forward Tees for Faster Play

(MANASSAS PARK, VA) - General's Ridge Golf Course - owned by Prince William County Park Authority, managed by Billy Casper Golf and located in Manassas Park VA - has installed a new set of forward tees to encourage faster play.

Based on the TEE IT FORWARD program jointly supported by The PGA of America and USGA, the new Napoleon Tees at General's Ridge are causing golfers to have more fun by playing from tees that better align with their ability.

The initiative reminds beginners and seasoned golfers alike that "teeing it forward" makes the course more playable and enjoyable, while also making it possible to play faster, score better and hit more lofted clubs into greens.

"The reaction to the new tees is amazing," says Dan Wagner, General Manager of General's Ridge. "Instead of being intimated or frustrated by the game, golfers in some instances are shooting career rounds."

One of the most challenging courses in the Washington, D.C. region, General's Ridge Golf Course is an 18-hole, par-72, 6,651-yard championship layout in Manassas Park, VA and named for the area's rich Civil War history.

Nestled among a forest of oak, beech and poplar trees, the course rambles over rolling hills and spectacular scenery, grabbing golfers' attentions form the first tee. Described as North Carolina mountain style, General's Ridge is a secluded retreat in thriving Northern Virginia and home to local hawks, deer, fox and other wildlife.

A driving range with 10 covered hitting bays, large putting and chipping green, and instruction ensure golfers hone their game between rounds.

Golfers take their post-round tales to the clubhouse and its restaurant serving lunch and dinner daily. A fully-stocked pro shop satisfies golfers' apparel and gear needs. General's Ridge is popular for business and social functions.

Bernhard Grinders Helps Showcase PGA TOUR FedExCup Sites

Blade Sharpening System Key to Ensuring Turf Conditions Optimized for Events at Liberty National, TPC Boston, Conway Farms and East Lake Golf Club

(RUGBY, U.K.) – Bernhard and Company – manufacturer of Bernhard Grinders, the world’s finest blade sharpening systems for turf cutting machines – announces its involvement with the PGATOUR’s FedExCup tournament sites.

Course maintenance teams at Liberty National (The Barclays), TPC Boston (Deutsche Bank Championship), Conway Farms (BMW Championship) and East Lake Golf Club (TOUR Championship by Coca Cola) rely on Bernhard Grinders to help ensure mowers and other machines maintain surgically-sharp blades. The resulting scythe-like cut promotes healthy turf crucial to presenting world-class playing surfaces.

All courses benefit from Bernhard’s Express Dual reel and Anglemaster bedknife grinders throughout the year to keep equipment in ideal condition. Bernhard experts have also been onsite at Liberty National, TPC Boston and East Lake to offer the company’s Tournament Support service. While there, they share insights accumulated through years of event-preparation experience and assist with sharpening, setting and preparing cutting units to promote utmost effectiveness.

“We’re long-time partners with all four venues and honored to help them present the finest course conditions possible during the FedExCup,” says Peter Wood, Chief Operating Officer of Bernhard and Company. “We have a proud heritage of aiding with major tournament preparations thanks to our unmatched product quality.”

Bernhard’s Express Dual grinds reels without requiring disassembly of the mower. Its membrane touch control panel, speed loading system and automatic traverse guarantees rapid turnaround and improved work shop safety. The unique auto relief eliminates the need for lapping, producing a more accurate finish and reduced maintenance costs.

The company’s Anglemaster bedknife grinder emphasizes speed and accuracy. Using a simple protractor with “auto-cue” to find any desired angle, it can sharpen bedknives to within one thousandth of an inch. Independent end-feed, a single-point advance and central-grind position make it the easiest-to-use bedknife grinder on the market.

Golfsmith, Nike Golf Partner with Spaulding Adaptive Golf Program to Help Marathon Bombing Survivors

Disabled Heroes to Receive Custom Fit Golf Gear through Deutsche Bank Championship

A number of survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing and others who have suffered severe physical and traumatic injuries are being given a chance to return to a game they love: golf. In conjunction with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and its Back in the Swing Adaptive Golf Program, tournament sponsor Golfsmith is partnering with Nike Golf to custom fit and provide golf clubs, apparel and gear to these courageous individuals so they can make further strides in recovery through golf.

The donation is part of the Deutsche Bank Championship Community Appreciation Day, with the tournament taking place this week at the TPC Boston in Norton, Mass. Today those who have lost limbs and suffered other serious injuries were presented with clubs and the opportunity to test Nike Golf equipment at Golfsmith’s interactive Swing Zone at the TPC Boston. Survivors shared their stories at a presentation ceremony and explained how golf is being used as a way to transition to their new life.

Mery Daniels, of Boston’s South End, lost her leg as a result of the Boston Marathon bombings. Since April, Mery has focused on her recovery through athletic activities. She commented, ”Golf is a game I’ve always wanted to play. I realize the dedication and challenges I’ve overcome, and despite my injuries I’m eager to use adaptive golf as a way to rehabilitate and move forward.”

Likewise, former University of New Hampshire star football player Muji Karim is determined to not let his injuries slow him down. After barely surviving a fiery car crash on Boston’s Storrow Drive in August 2011, Muji emerged from three weeks in a medically-induced coma to find he had sustained burns to 31 percent of his body, resulting in the loss of both of his legs and the four fingers of his left hand, as well as a myriad of additional injuries.

“Golf was something that I always loved to do but I thought I would never play again,” he said. “All the support I have been given helps me and allows me to do something that I never believed I would be able to do again and for that I’m grateful.”

Muji, who is committed to reaching out to help others who also have undergone traumatic injuries, has also met with survivors of the Boston Marathon bombings who will now rehabilitate themselves through golf.

Said Richard “Rick” Johnson, PGA Golf Professional and Spaulding Adaptive Sports Instructor: “In my work with those recovering from serious injuries, social rehabilitation is just as important as physical rehabilitation, due to emotional and mental stress. For me, golf provides a 360-degree approach that encompasses all aspects of life. It provides me the chance to constantly build on the future as well as an outlet for emotional and physical energy.”

For Golfsmith, the world’s largest golf retailer, helping people enjoy the game of golf is a welcome opportunity.

“We’re thrilled to partner with The Deutsche Bank Championship, Nike Golf and the folks at Spaulding who have played such an integral role in helping these survivors recover and rehabilitate,” said Golfsmith President and CEO, Sue Gove. “Everyday in our stores, our goal is to inspire people to enjoy golf. These courageous individuals, however, are the real inspiration. Through their amazing spirit and determination, they show us that golf can have a profound impact both on and off the course.”

Mountain Air: First in Flight

Perched a mile high in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Mountain Air Country Club was one of the earliest premier golf course developments to include an airport

(BURNSVILLE, N.C.) — Back in the late 1980s when a pair of families initially began development of the private real estate community Mountain Air — to be anchored by its own landing strip — nearly a mile above sea level in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, many wondered if the developers might literally have their heads in the clouds.

Undaunted, Mountain Air’s open-minded and visionary development team worked diligently toward its aeronautic goal atop Slickrock Mountain — albeit following a cautious and deliberately thoughtful pace, always keeping safety first. Today, nearly three decades later Mountain Air’s 2,875-foot airstrip has become as iconic as the community’s world-class golf course and its equally impressive array of amenities.

Yet, what many don’t know is exactly how instrumental Mountain Air’s runway was during the community’s earliest days — providing a considerable portion of the central driving force behind the development’s maiden success.

It was the ability of Mountain Air’s member-pilots to fly into their dream community from all reaches of the country that lured many initial investors. Their capital infusion provided an early cash flow and prevented financial turbulence — helping the community “get off the ground,” so to speak.

Meanwhile, the Mountain Air Pilots Association (MAPA), which was formed in 1995 to promote aviation safety at Mountain Air and contribute to the education and welfare of the local community, would later provide seed money to build the community’s gorgeous clubhouse.

Fort Walton Beach, Fla., orthopedic surgeon Bill Marshall, an avid pilot, first visited Mountain Air in 1992. One of his doctor-pilot friends who had already purchased property at Mountain Air had raved about it to Marshall for two years, “You have got to come up here,” he said. “It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen. I think you’ll love it.”

His friend, Dan Roper, advised Marshall, “Don’t fly up here and land [at Mountain Air]. I want you to land in Asheville to get a feel for the place and make the 30-minute drive up here, so you can fully appreciate the surrounding area.”

After one visit, said Marshall: “It was hook, line and sinker for us.”

As Marshall and all of Mountain Air’s vibrant pilot community are aware, mountain flying is substantially different than the usual experience of landing at a conventional “flatland” field. Pilots coming into Mountain Air for the first time are provided a safety manual as well as a video about landing on the runway. The detailed safety manual was compiled by Mountain Air’s roster of experienced pilots as a way to review the process for landing and taking off in the mountain environment — in particular at Mountain Air — at the same time adding extensive risk management.

“You land at Mountain Air weather permitting, which means proper visibility and wind conditions,” explained Marshall. “The conditions have to be right to come in there and land. You need to be a prepared, experienced pilot and you need to be on your toes.”

Mountain Air’s airstrip can handle most shapes and sizes of aircraft, everything from a single engine Cessna to a small Citation jet. The runway was constructed uphill, allowing pilots to decelerate as they land. Mountain Air residents on the ground, meanwhile, are made aware by a pilot landing warning system that alerts residents of approaching aircraft. Also, there is a pair of cameras positioned to provide real time images for runway safety and to observe the visual weather conditions along with runway markings to assist landings.

In addition, Mountain Air’s airstrip provides year-round access that allows Mission Memorial Air Ambulance Service to reach critical care patients in the area when access to the valley is denied because of foggy conditions. Under those conditions patients may be transported by ambulance to the Mountain Air airstrip and retrieved there by Air Ambulance. The runway has also been used for military training such as mountain night approaches.

MAPA is a 501-C3 serving not only as advocate for safety, but also to help foster community relationships by providing scholarships and grants to community organizations. The association works with area rescue squads and EMF personnel. In addition to raising funds for charities, MAPA holds seminars on flight safety and conducts regular safety improvements to the Mountain Air airport.

A number of Mountain Air’s pilots participate in Angel Flight, an organization that flies patients to get health care and flies donor organs to places where they are needed. MAPA also plays host to an annual Airway-Fairway Golf Tournament, where pilots, controllers, Mountain Air residents and guests participate in the largest fundraiser each year to support the charitable work of MAPA. The 2012 tournament produced a net profit of almost $11,600, the largest ever.

Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course Facility Now Complete

Clubhouse Opening Marks Final Stage

(Laredo, Texas) — The Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course, designed by
world-renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., enjoyed a soft opening last October.  Now with the completed clubhouse the facility is 100 percent open for business.

The City of Laredo’s significant new golf course project is poised to achieve national and international recognition. A special event with Hall of Fame golf legend Nancy Lopez will be the crowning touch on a project spanning almost four years.

The Max A. Mandel Golf Course occupies a 270-acre dream site along the Rio Grande and
Jones brought his celebrated design team’s genius to transform a landscape that features two deep arroyos, a rich variety of mesquite trees and river vega flora into a spectacular 18-hole layout that already has captivated and attracted golfers from not only Texas and Mexico, but also outside the region.   Seven of the holes on the course incorporate memorable vistas of the majestic Rio Grande, notably as the par-3 15th whose green is perched some 60 feet above the river.

Jones said of the new course:  “The City of Laredo graciously provided us with the latitude to let our imagination roam free across a rare piece of land that exuded the rugged essence of this storied region.   For the one-time capital of the Republic of the Rio Grande, we have created a golf experience that we hope will be a source of great pride and satisfaction for the public.  We believe the City of Laredo’s inaugural public golf course is destined to be regarded as one of the best public golf courses in Texas.”

The Robert Trent Jones II firm, which has designed 273 courses in some 44 countries on six continents, credits four previous Texas courses in its portfolio.  The esteemed architect’s reputation for honoring the cultural, geographical and historical aspects of each project coupled with a sensitive respect for the environment lends an invaluable luster to the City of Laredo’s impressive undertaking to deliver an unmatched golf experience in Texas.

“The City of Laredo is proud of this very special golf course that will rate as one of the very best public access facilities in the state of Texas,” said Horacio De Leon Jr., Assistant City Manager and project manager for the golf course.  “The City expects the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course to put Laredo on the map as a golf destination for tourists and the business community.  Hopefully, this will be the start for several more courses, which ultimately would position Laredo as the next great golf mecca.  We expect that this course will appeal to experienced golfers throughout the world, as well as sparking an interest with youth and aspiring new golfers in our community, thus generating more excitement for this wonderful sport.”

The golf course is named in honor of one of Laredo’s most prominent and highly respected citizens.  The late Max A. Mandel was a successful bank executive whose 45 years of service to the community is legendary.  His vision helped put the City of Laredo on a strong economic foundation.  The course sits on Mandel’s farm, named Las Islitas (Spanish for “little islands”), and the Mandel family generously donated a total 390 acres of land, $1 million for the construction project and water rights for irrigation purposes to the City of Laredo to commemorate Max’s philanthropic spirit and civic legacy.

The challenging par-72 course will cater to golfers of all ability levels, with five sets of tees available and yardages ranging from 7,069 from the back tees to 4,897 for the forward tees.
A provision has been made for competitive tournament tees to be extended to 7,297 yards,
and a dedicated “juniors” teeing area on each hole is incorporated to increase enjoyment for family play.

Key community and third party partners who are closely involved with the Max A. Mandel Municipal Golf Course include:  the Mandel Family, land donation and benefactor; Foresight Golf, the lease operator; Landscapes Unlimited, the construction firm; and architectural firm RTJ II.

Bettinardi Golf on Tour

Bettinardi had a lot of exposure on the PGA and Champions TOUR this weekend. Here is a brief update.

Matt Kuchar played great and had a share of the lead going into Sunday but an untimely triple bogey on his 9th hole set him back. Kuchar is still ranked 4th in the FedEx Cup Standings with lots of golf to be played over the next few weeks, look for Matt to have a strong comeback the Duetsche Bank.

We made a putter for Freddy Couples and shipped it to him Friday of last week where he received it on Wednesday. Freddy liked it so much he kicked out his putter of six years in exchange for the Bettinardi Tour Proto. Freddy birdied 4 out of his last 5 holes to finish in solo 3rd at 11-under par at the Boeing Classic.

KJ Choi made the cut this week at the Barlcay’s and put our putter into play for the first time this year after months we spent working with him. Hopefully KJ has similar success that Kuchar has had this year and can sneak a win out over the next few weeks.

Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design Announces Successful Reopening of Columbia Country Club

(DUBLIN, Ohio) – Fry/Straka Global Golf Course Design (www.frystraka.com), a partnership with worldwide reach in award-winning golf-course design, announces a highly successful reopening of the golf course at Columbia Country Club, in Columbia, Mo. Columbia Country Club, a private club managed by Dallas-based Eagle Golf, reopened July 27 to rave reviews by its membership.

“The comments by the membership and guests of the club have been incredibly complimentary,” said Jason Straka, a Fry/Straka principal who oversaw the project. “If they enjoy the course now, they will fall in love with it as it matures over the next few years.”

Ten holes were rebuilt or rerouted, and the remaining eight holes and the practice facility were renovated. In addition, 2,000 feet of Army Corps of Engineers jurisdictional stream were restored on two holes, adding to the environmental benefits of the renovated golf course.

Since the course reopened, Columbia Country Club has increased its membership by nearly 10 percent. On Aug. 3 it hosted the first round of play for the inaugural Columbia Women’s City Golf Championship, where a new women’s course record of 72 was set.

“You can get a risk-reward shot or you can play it safe – nearly everyone says the redesigned course is beautiful and extremely fair,” said Brett Bieske, PGA, general manager and director of golf at Columbia Country Club. “It now has the look and feel of a Lake-of-the-Ozarks course.”

Enhanced aesthetics and playability were two central goals of the redesign project, both of which were achieved in great measure. Among the many changes were the removal of a number of trees and invasive vegetation, which previously had restricted imaginative and challenging shot making on certain holes. The resultant new vistas opened up the par-71 course in many spots to views of Hinkson Creek and several of its tributaries, creating a new element of visual beauty and aesthetic pleasure for players. In addition, some new tees were added and some tee boxes redesigned, providing greater playing enjoyment and scoring potential.

A number of challenging factors required consideration as Straka drew up plans for the redesign. The course is landlocked by surrounding development roads, freeways and an abandoned Missouri Department of Transportation site. It also is bisected by a small river, which courses through a deep ravine. As the golf course originally was built in the 1920s, the property on which it is situated is quite small. Over the past few years, a resurgence in commercial development along the course’s southeastern boundary began. Municipal decisions, such as a new freeway exit, a new bridge spanning the river and a new access road, directly impacted the golf course, taking out a portion of three holes. Consequently, all of the back nine holes had to be redesigned and some holes completely relocated in order to keep the overall yardage. The rebuilt holes feature significantly-improved drainage, irrigation, turf-growing conditions, aesthetics and playability.

The new golf holes are a bit wider and more playable than the old holes, yet shots into the greens can be demanding. The course now ranges from 4,702 yards from the forward tees to 6,527 yards from the back tees. State-of-the art construction led to more disease- and drought-tolerant greens, which now drain well and can withstand the transition zone’s heat and summer stresses while still providing excellent playing conditions. Stilling pools were created throughout the streams to control sedimentation, and hundreds of native riparian plants were installed along the streams.

The overall result of the redesign work is a spectacular renovation showcasing the environmental attributes and natural beauty of Columbia Country Club.

Nike Athlete Tommy Fleetwood clinches first European Tour victory in playoff thriller

Fleetwood birdies playoff hole with his Method prototype putter to take home the Johnnie Walker Championship trophy

(BEAVERTON, Ore.) – Nike Athlete Tommy Fleetwood triumphed through a three-way sudden-death playoff to capture his very first European Tour title at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Perthshire, Scotland.

The 22-year-old Englishman, who had 14 Nike clubs in his bag, eagled the 16th and birdied the final hole to set up a playoff on the par-5 18th. Fleetwood, playing with the Nike 20XI golf ball featuring Nike’s RZN core technology, hit a stellar approach shot before sinking a three-footer for birdie with his Method prototype putter to lock up the win.

"It's unbelievable," Fleetwood said. "I have been up there a lot and not even had a top-five finish and all of a sudden you come away with a win. I’ve always loved the golf course, I’ve always loved Scotland, and it just seems like it was meant to be.”

Fleetwood was fourth overall in driving distance for the tournament, averaging more than 311 yards off the tee with his Nike VR_S Covert driver. He kept dry in the Nike Golf Tour Performance apparel collection and wore Nike Lunar Control footwear.
