Golf Courses To “Dye” For

Legendary golf course architect Pete Dye was back in the news last week when 20-year-old amateur Nick Dunlap won a PGA TOUR event on the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. Raleigh-NC-based McConnell Golf boasts a pair of Dye-designed courses among its extensive portfolio, including one considered among the best college courses in the country and another that features a hole Dye called “the hardest par three I ever designed.”

(RALEIGH, N.C.) — Last week’s historic PGA TOUR victory by 20-year-old amateur Nick Dunlap took place on the Pete Dye Stadium Course at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif. When the legendary architect was hired to build the golf course, the developers told him to “build the hardest damn golf course in the world.”

In conjunction with last week’s event, Golf Digest ran an article titled “Pete Dye’s Best Courses, Ranked.” At No. 20 on the list is the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech, which was added last year to Raleigh, N.C.-based McConnell Golf’s portfolio of owned and managed courses around the southeast. Golf Digest also listed the Pete Dye River Course at Virginia Tech at No. 6 in its list of the “25 Greatest College Golf Courses” for 2023.

Wrote Golf Digest: “A donation from the Goodwin family in 2003 allowed the financial support to cover a complete redesign by Pete Dye on an existing 18-hole layout along the New River in Radford, Va. The River course earned a fourth-place award from Golf Digest in its Best Remodel rankings of 2006, the highest of any public facility. The course — which is the home to both Virginia Tech and Radford University’s golf teams — has earned the reputation as one of the best collegiate courses in the country.”

Dye returned to The Cardinal after McConnell Golf acquired the golf course in 2006 and, upon completion of his renovations, famously dubbed No. 12 as “the hardest par three I ever designed.”

Last year, in Golfers' Choice list of the “Best golf courses in North Carolina,” The Cardinal was ranked No. 7 in the state.

• Phantom 11: A complete re-design from the sole up, the face balanced, multi-material Phantom 11 is a high-MOI mallet with a stable, mid-bend shaft and new arrow alignment features.

• Phantom 11.5: With a low-bend shaft for moderate toe-flow, the Phantom 11.5 was designed for the player seeking the alignment features and MOI properties of the 11 with a shaft design that helps the putter swing on a slight arc (available in a left-handed version).

• Phantom 11 Long Design – 38-inch:  Designed in the Phantom 11 head shape, the Phantom 11 Long Design is a 38-inch counterbalanced model with a longer, heavier 17-inch, 135-gram pistol-style grip and a custom-designed stiffer mid-bend shaft to accommodate the overall heavier head, which includes two 25-gram tungsten sole weights. The design features help the player to quiet the hands for a more stable, balanced stroke.

PHANTOM TECHNOLOGY

• ALIGNMENT-INFUSED DESIGNS: Based on tour player input, Scotty designed new 2024 Phantom putter shapes with alignment systems to help players easily and correctly align the putter at address. In addition to a refined, alignment-promoting overall shape, each model features alignment cues that range from elegantly milled sight dots on the 5 and 7 models, to mechanically straight sight lines on the 9 models, to arrow-shaped lines on the 11 models, helping to give the player a clear pre-putt look towards the hole.

• RE-ENGINEERED MULTI-MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION: Each 2024 Phantom model’s putter face and body is crafted from 303 stainless steel and integrated with lightweight 6061 aircraft aluminum flange and sole plate components. These multi-material designs have been made more rigid, giving players added stability and more solid feel while complementing the models’ new optimized vibration damping technology.

• DUAL-MILLED FACE TECHNOLOGY: Every 303 stainless steel face on new Phantom putters features Scotty’s dual-milled face technology, which originated on tour and was first introduced to golfers in 2023’s Super Select line. The dual-milling process provides better sound and feel while combining deep-milled softness with the feedback and consistency of mid-milled offerings. 2024 Phantom putter faces each undergo an initial deep mill, before a second pass levels the milling peaks to produce a flatter, more consistent surface. CUSTOM-DESIGNED FULL CONTACT GRIP: Every model features a new Full Contact paddle-style grip, reminiscent of Scotty’s classic Baby T design with modern updates. FINISH & GRAPHICS: The new Phantom stainless steel putter heads all undergo Scotty’s silver mist process for a radiant yet glare-resistant appearance and texture. The 6061 aircraft grade aluminum components have been misted and anodized in a black aluminum finish. Scotty’s familiar three-dot theme on the back pockets and sight dots of the Phantom 5 and 7 putter heads are accented with translucent smoke paintfill, while engravings and sight lines on all models are painted in shades of asphalt, dove gray and dark gray. Master Craftsman Bob Vokey’s New Line Delivers Lower Flight, Better Feel and Maximum Spin

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – Titleist’s new Vokey Design SM10 wedges are engineered to produce a lower, more controlled flight with improved feel and maximum spin – advancing the performance of the game’s most played wedges through an unrelenting focus on Master Craftsman Bob Vokey’s three keys to great wedge play:

The tour launch of SM10 continued two weeks later at The American Express, with Dill back behind his grinding wheel on the Titleist Tour Truck. When players teed off Thursday, Vokey SM10 was once again the clear favorite. Of the gap, sand and lob wedges in play at PGA West, 251 (55%) were Vokey wedges and 135 (29%) were SM10. Thirty-nine players, including Justin Thomas (46.10F, 52.12F, 56.14F, 60.04T), played at least one new Vokey SM10 wedge for the first time. The same week on the DP World Tour, Cameron Young added four new SM10’s (Vokey SM10 48.10F, 52.12F, 58.08M & 60.04T @62). 

Wyndham Clark (46.10F, 50.08F, 56.10S, WedgeWorks 59A), Will Zalatoris (50.08F, 54.10S, 60.04T), Tom Kim (46.10F, 52.12F) and Ludvig Åberg (60.08M) are also among the more than 100 players on the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour that have already played new SM10’s in competition.  

“I flight my wedges really low,” said Jordan Spieth. “And as I got to the gap wedge and the pitching wedge (with SM10), I saw some more consistency in the flight, especially on the draw intent shots, just kind of holding a little straighter… kind of that more pinch-ier flight without it over-hooking. That’s always a benefit when we're looking at these left pins and trying to attack them.”  

“I think (wedge fitting) it’s as important as getting fit for a driver,” Spieth said. “I mean, these are your scoring clubs. You can do all you want, you can drive it to 100 yards all day off the tee, but if you don't have the ability to get it in the hole from there or really feel like you have confidence in your wedge play, it doesn’t do you a whole lot of good. Someone might beat you that’s not driving it as well. So it’s extremely important, also because there’s just so many different options now between lofts, lies and especially grinds. You could think you’re in the right one and all of a sudden you grab a different grind and you're like, man, OK, this is actually where I'm struggling with this one shot, and all of a sudden now I have it back.”

DISTANCE AND TRAJECTORY CONTROL: Vokey Design SM10 wedges feature new optimized, progressive CG to achieve precision in distance and trajectory control. In the 46-52° models, the CG is lower for a better transition from the iron set and more consistent distance gapping. The CG is also pushed out closer to the center of the face, helping to eliminate excessive draw movement and provide a more solid feel, based on Tour player feedback and testing. In lofts 54-62°, the CG is moved up and forward, which provides lower trajectory and a squarer face at impact. Loft-optimized CG allows for more consistent, controlled flight, better feel and tighter dispersion from the top end to the bottom end of a player’s wedge setup.

MAXIMUM SPIN: Vokey’s patented Spin Milled groove cutting process provides a scoreline that delivers higher, more consistent spin, wedge after wedge. Vokey SM10 wedges feature TX9 grooves that are individually cut based on loft and finish: the grooves on the stronger-lofted wedges (46-54°) are cut narrower and deeper, while the higher-lofted wedges (56-62°) feature wider and shallower grooves.

A parallel micro-texture between grooves helps to maximize spin on partial shots, and a high frequency heat treatment is applied to the impact area, doubling the durability of the groove edge compared to untreated grooves.
