(Englewood, Colo.) – GOLFTEC – the world leader in golf lessons and largest employer of PGA Professionals – has been named one of the 10 “Most Innovative Companies in Sports for 2017” by FAST Company magazine, as published in the March issue.
The company was praised for “demystifying the golf swing with data,” a nod to the landmark SwingTRU Motion Study, released in 2016. The most fact-based analysis of the golf swing ever conducted, SwingTRU identified specific body positions within the swing that directly correlate to handicap level and play a key role in improving distance, accuracy and consistent contact.
These incredibly important findings provided GOLFTEC coaches an additional layer of insight for enhanced golf instruction. They can focus on specific positions where improvement is most needed, thus maximizing the student’s learning curve and ability to transfer lessons into improved on-course performance. The result is GOLFTEC students report a 96 percent success rate, with the average customer dropping seven strokes from their scorecard.
“Before we came along, golf instruction had been based solely on swing theories without hard facts to back anything up,” says Joe Assell, Co-Founder and CEO of GOLFTEC. “By using an array of advanced motion measurement technology, launch monitors, high-tech cameras and more, we’ve unearthed undisputable facts and truths about the golf swing. This means that our coaching staff is able to guide students of all skill levels to better results more quickly and efficiently than ever previously possible.”
Over the past 22 years, GOLFTEC has collected and stored motion measurement data on more than 90 million golf swings. This equates to more than 350 terabytes of information, captured during nearly seven million lessons. For the SwingTRU study, a statistically significant slice of the accumulated data was examined to learn the differences between how golfers of all handicaps – from PGA Tour® players to aspiring students and beginners – move throughout the swing. GOLFTEC discovered patterns in how professionals and elite amateurs use their bodies as compared to higher handicap golfers.

For 2017, additional innovation includes unveiling an updated in-center design scheme that creates an engaging and vibrant golf atmosphere. Tailored for total golf immersion, the modern and sleek facilities provide students with new amenities, game improvement products and services, an extensive digital experience and comfortable furniture in common areas. GOLFTEC will be rolling-out a variety of advanced technology in select centers, including upgrades to the TECfit club-fitting program and state-of-the-art high-definition cameras.
The first GOLFTEC sites to showcase the new design scheme are the Hong Kong instructional center (opened in October) and Ellicott City, MD center near Baltimore (opened in November), followed by Tucson, AZ, Plano, TX, Birmingham, AL and Grand Rapids, MI. More new standalone center locations are underway and scheduled for opening in the first half of 2017.
GOLFTEC’s unrivaled category growth in recent years includes a 98% increase in revenue since 2010. The 2016 fiscal year was the company’s most successful to date, setting records for lessons given, number of students, employees and facilities, as well as total revenue. GOLFTEC was also named to the 2016 INC. 5000, a list highlighting the “Fastest Growing Companies” in the world.
Each GOLFTEC student undergoes a Swing Evaluation to assess their skill, followed by a certified personal coach recommending a specific game plan, which includes fundamental elements like course strategy and a TECfit club fitting session. While the majority of lessons are taught indoors in private bays, coaches also accompany players for on-course/outdoor lessons to ensure they are comfortable in real world situations.
The coaching team is mainly comprised of PGA professionals who have conducted thousands of lessons. Each is certified after multi-week training at GOLFTEC University where comprehensive analysis of golfers’ swing mechanics cornerstones progressive teaching methodology.
