(HARRIS, Michigan) – Sweetgrass Golf Club – an amenity of Island Resort & Casino here in the bucolic Upper Peninsula – was rated one of the nation’s finest in Golfweek’s “2015 America’s Best Casino Courses,” an annual compendium published last week and accessible via Golfweek.com.
Hundreds of Golfweek raters examine overall strength of routing, feature shaping, natural setting, greens, variety and memorability of holes, conditioning and maintenance, landscape management and other criteria to determine the nation’s best courses.
“We targeted earning these types of accolades when we decided to build Sweetgrass; we knew that many people find them credible, ‘best-in-kind’ judgments and therefore consult them when determining where they want to play,” said Island Resort and Casino General Manager Tony Mancilla. “We’re gratified to be included in this list, and we’re committed to providing our visitors and guests with the best experiences possible.”
Sweetgrass has previously received best-of honors from GOLF and Golf Digest magazines; this latest superlative distinction comes one week after the resort and tribe announced it was building a second course, also designed by Albanese, planned to debut in 2017.
Like with Sweetgrass, the tribe and resort have instructed Albanese to design the as-yet unnamed course with the objective to be instantly considered for critical acclaim.
“I’ve said this before, one course is a course, two is a destination; we want Island Resort & Casino to be known as the home of two of the finest courses in North America,” said Mancilla.
