Trevino, Colbert and Gulbis to Participate in Rockwind Community Links Golf Day

Superb New Municipal Course Marks Week of Celebrations in Hobbs, New Mexico

(Hobbs, New Mexico) — Lee Trevino, the immensely popular Hall of Fame professional golfer known as “The Merry Mex,” Jim Colbert, winner of a combined 28 titles on the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour, and the LPGA Tour’s stylish Natalie Gulbis who played on three victorious U.S. Solheim Cup teams, are headliners for a special reception and tournament to commemorate the City of Hobbs’ new Rockwind Community Links on May 21 and 22, respectively.

“Rockwind Community Links has planned an extraordinary week of activity to celebrate the opening of this model municipal golf facility,” said Hobbs City Manager J.J. Murphy.  “We are very excited that legend Lee Trevino, former PGA TOUR and Champions Tour standout Jim Colbert and LPGA fan favorite Natalie Gulbis accepted our invitation to come to Hobbs to experience our exceptional golf course.”

Trevino, a Texas native who turned pro in 1960 and later was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1981, had a hardscrabble start to eventually reaching a distinguished career in which he registered 29 PGA TOUR titles and 29 Champions Tour wins.  Known for his tremendous work ethic in conquering roadblocks to rise to the top of his profession, Trevino earned two U.S. Open titles to go with a combined eight other major victories on both tours.  He also played on six Ryder Cup teams and was U.S team captain in 1985.

Colbert joined the PGA TOUR in 1965 and won eight titles.  He enjoyed a highly successful second career on the Champions Tour where he posted 20 victories and claimed a major win at the 1993 Senior Players Championship.  Recognized for his signature bucket hat, Colbert was a crowd favorite during his Champions Tour years.  A generous supporter of Kansas State University and its sports programs, Colbert played a big role in helping the school build a new golf course called Colbert Hills GC, which also serves as a First Tee facility.  In 1998, Colbert was inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Gulbis, an LPGA fan favorite, joined the tour in 2002 and has one win to her credit, the 2007 Evian Masters.  The California native who resides in Las Vegas is particularly known for her charity and community work.  Gulbis is a supporter of the Boys and Girls Club and she actively participates in the Women’s Professional Golf Fellowship, a Christian faith group on the LPGA Tour.  Stylish and attractive, Gulbis was selected by Donald Trump to be a Celebrity Apprentice contestant for one season.

The City of Hobbs is offering teams of four golfers the opportunity to play in the golf tournament on Friday, May 22 with Lee Trevino, Jim Colbert and Natalie Gulbis.  The cost of a foursome is $1,000 and no individual playing spots will be sold.  One ticket to the May 21  reception at the Zia Park Casino in Hobbs with Trevino, Colbert and Gulbis is included in the package, along with lunch and the awards ceremony on May 22.  A limited number of tickets to the Zia Park Casino reception will be made available for $50 per person. Teams of four may register and pay for this exciting event by calling Rockwind Community Links at (575) 397-9297 starting on April 30.
