Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass Returns for 12th Year June 23-25

(HARRIS, MICHIGAN) – The exuberant energy of women’s professional golf will be returning to the Upper Peninsula June 23-25 for the 12th year of the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass. As a part of the Epson Tour “Road to the LPGA,” 144 professional women golfers will once again descend upon the Island Resort & Casino to play Sweetgrass (2022 National Golf Course of the Year) and competing for prize money totaling $225,000.

“If you’ve never witnessed a pro golf tournament, the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass is a great, inexpensive, family-friendly place to see one,” said Tony Mancilla, General Manager of Island Resort & Casino and Tournament Director. “And the Epson Tour golf play is excellent,” Mancilla added. “These athletes are working their way to an LPGA card, and the average score is just a stroke or two below the LPGA average. In some cases, the golfer may play on both the Epson tour and the LPGA.”

The winner of the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass will take home a trophy, a tribal honor quilt handmade by an elder of the Hannahville Indian Community, and a check for $33,750. The winner will also be eligible for a share of the Potawatomi Cup - an additional $30,000 in cash prizes awarded to Epson players based on performance at the three Potawatomi Nation casino sponsored events—which includes the Island Resort Championship at Sweetgrass.

At the end of the 22-tournament season, the top ten money winners on the Epson Tour earn an automatic exemption onto the 2024 LPGA Tour. Mancilla noted that most of the Island Resort Championship winners have gone on to earn their LPGA card.

Fans are encouraged to bring a chair or utilize the bleachers by the nine and eighteen greens, as well as at the center of the course. They are also welcome to follow golfers as they play their rounds and can get autographs and photos taken with golfers at the end of their rounds. Food and beverages are available on the course, and everything is $2.
