KemperSports to Manage Chicago’s Harborside International Golf Center

(NORTHBROOK, Ill.) – KemperSports, the most trusted name in golf, has been selected by the Illinois International Port District to provide golf course management, marketing and agronomy services for Harborside International Golf Center in Chicago.

Located only 15 minutes from downtown Chicago, Harborside features two award-winning 18-hole golf courses (Port and Starboard), and a 24,000 square-foot clubhouse that includes a Phil Stefani Signature Restaurant, Pier 37. The Starboard course has been named to Golfweek’s Top 50 “Best Municipal Courses” in the U.S. list for 2011-2012 and both courses are ranked in the publication’s “Best Courses You Can Play” in Illinois.

“KemperSports has extensive experience in managing and promoting a number of the top public and private golf courses in the Chicagoland area, and its management team shares our vision for providing exceptional service and top course conditioning for all guests,” said Michael Forde, chairman of the Illinois International Port District.

KemperSports will introduce a number of new marketing programs, tournaments and special events in 2013 to build on the facility’s success and make Harborside a frequent destination for Chicago golfers. KemperSports also plans to expand player development and teaching programs at the facility as Harborside features one of the best driving range facilities in the U.S., an expansive 57-acre practice facility with bent grass tees, target greens and multiple short game areas.

“With two great golf courses located just minutes from the Chicago Loop, Harborside is a premier golf facility,” said Steve Skinner, chief executive officer of KemperSports. “We plan to introduce a variety of new programming at Harborside to cater to the residents of Chicago and surrounding areas. We look forward to elevating the service, playing conditions and guest experience at the property to make Harborside a must-play for Chicago golfers and visitors to the city.”

Harborside International Golf Center was designed by well-known Chicago-based golf course architect Dick Nugent. The development has been recognized for its positive environmental transformation as Nugent converted 500-acres of a former landfill into two, highly-regarded links style layouts.

Harborside’s Port course, a par-72 layout measuring 7,164 yards from the tournament tees, played host to SBC Senior Open in 2002, an annual event on The Champions Tour schedule from 1989–2002. The Starboard course is also a par-72 course and reaches 7,166 yards from the tournament tees. The facility hosts a number of amateur tournaments each season and this year, Harborside will welcome the Chicago Golfweek Amateur Tour as it hosts The Chicago Classic in August, the tour’s second major of the season.

The Eagle Zone Golf Center named PING National Fitter of the Year

(PHOENIX) – Club-fitting pioneer and leader PING named Carolyn Echols and her staff at The Eagle Zone Golf Center in Greenville, S.C., the 2012 PING National Fitter of the Year.

First given in 1997, the award recognizes the Authorized PING Fitter who has demonstrated the highest commitment to custom fitting and the promotion of its benefits to golfers of all abilities.

“Carolyn and her team are exceptional ambassadors for the PING custom-fitting philosophy,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “They combine technical expertise and first-rate customer service, qualities that build a loyal customer base while also growing the game with new golfers. She and her staff are consummate professionals. It’s no wonder The Eagle Zone has had so much success. Plus, they have a very impressive facility that’s ideal for promoting and conducting custom fittings. We’re proud to recognize their success, and they are highly deserving of being PING’s National Fitter of the Year.”

Echols, the General Manager and Head Professional, said she has seen how PING’s custom club-fitting can transform a golfer’s outlook. Recently she helped a man whose clubs showed a wear pattern on the toe. She adjusted his lie angle, with instant results. “He was amazed. He said, ‘I can’t believe I’ve been hitting it off the toe all this time. What a difference it makes to hit the ball on the center of the clubface. Golf is so much more enjoyable now.’ Sometimes all it takes is putting the right club in a person’s hands.”

The Eagle Zone has won multiple Regional Fitter of the Year honors. Echols attributes the operation’s continuing success to having the right mix of product and people. “Having PING’s clubs and fitting systems has helped us so much,” she said. “Some of our success is the product selling itself. But we also have a core group of people who work really well together. We listen. We take notes and find out what’s important to the customer.”

Being able to watch ball flights on The Eagle Zone’s expansive outdoor range is essential to her teaching and demonstrates the effectiveness of a proper fitting, Echols said. During fittings, she and her staff of three fitters are able to make adjustments on the fly. “A lot of times customers will come in to be fit for one club and they’ll walk out with an entire set. And because we’ve built their trust they know we didn’t up-sell them. They simply see that it works.”

She and her staff rely heavily on PING’s Advanced Fitting System (AFS) Interchangeable Fitting Cart. Fitters also have an iPING putter app they use to measure stroke type and match customers with a corresponding putter model. They also stock a large variety of current-model demo drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and wedges.

“We like the cart the best, the ease of it, its versatility,” Echols said. “Even PING’s lie tape is better than anyone’s. We use it for all of our fittings. It’s a tiny thing but it means a lot to us.” Echols said the structural integrity of PING’s fitting hardware gives them confidence. “The tip sleeve between the head and shaft is solid, it never comes loose, never breaks. It’s all extremely well made.”

One way that Echols promotes and grows her fitting business is by extending the golf season. Even though prime season is March to November, 25 covered hitting stations are equipped with overhead heaters to ward off the chill and allow for year-round fittings. The Eagle Zone’s 22-acre campus includes a large full-service pro shop, practice greens and bunkers, and a two-level range offering some 100 hitting stations on grass and mats. In addition to a loyal following of regular customers, The Eagle Zone has some 300 members who pay monthly dues. The clientele also includes golfers who are members elsewhere.

“We have quite a few local people who belong to private country clubs who come here a lot because they love the facility,” Echols said.

Echols is an LPGA Class A Member and is entering her 20th year of professional teaching. She has been with The Eagle Zone since April 2010. Previously, she was the head professional for 11 years at The Cliffs at Glassy in Landrum, S.C., and an assistant professional and a full-time instructor at San Ramon Royal Vista Golf Course in San Ramon, Calif., for five years. She went through the PING Custom Fitting training in Phoenix and is a PING staff member. At The Eagle Zone she oversees five instructors: PGA of America members Jamie Michala and Bob Bell, LPGA Member Sandy Halkett, Mike Carter, and John Gerring, who recently celebrated his 50th year in teaching and is a member of the PGA of America Hall of Fame.

In addition to Echols, The Eagle Zone’s fitters include Golf Shop Manager Tony Littlejohn, and Golf Shop Assistants Daniel Clemmons and Jarrod McWatters.

Nearly 2,000 authorized PING Club Fitters were eligible for the award. Among the criteria considered by the selection committee are length of time in the program, commitment to on-going training, sustained sales growth, and support of the entire PING product line.

Nominating Carolyn Echols and her staff was Michael Hopey, PING Field Representative for the area.

Owner of eight premier private golf clubs around the Carolinas, McConnell Golf offers its members a collaborative way to unite, contribute and engage throughout their various local communities

(RALEIGH, N.C.) — In its first decade of existence, McConnell Golf has earned a reputation for giving back not only to the game of golf, but also by serving as host to many charities throughout its clubs’ communities and donors toward numerous others, as well.

Now, McConnell Golf is introducing a way for its thousand-plus members around the Carolinas to participate and engage. Seeking to leave a vast “footprint” of giving, McConnell Golf’s new “Footprints on the Green” program is designed to elicit a strong and supportive effort by McConnell Golf’s collective membership and staff, and is intended to become a driving force in the local community where McConnell Golf clubs reside.

Among the volunteer opportunities already scheduled are the Food Bank of North Carolina in Durham on February 16 and 23; Urban Ministry Can Drive throughout February; First Friday Kids Camp at Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh on April 5; Special Olympics Track and Field at Ravenscroft School in Raleigh on April 17 and 18; Triangle March for Babies in Durham on April 27; and a family dinner at Ronald McDonald House in Durham on July 22. Additional charities currently organizing dates with McConnell Golf for involvement include Big Brothers Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, Dress for Success, among others.

“We are well aware of the challenges our society and environment face daily,” said Lauren Barry, Marketing and Events Director of McConnell Golf. “We will align ourselves with a variety of organizations to hear their stories and spread their message through our support.”

“Footprints on the Green” was designed with all age groups in mind, to serve as a learning tool for the youth, a team-building activity for the McConnell Golf staff and a friendship-building platform to strengthen membership connections. The program allows members and staff to contribute through volunteering time and efforts to enrich the lives and environment around them.

“Any amount of aid makes a big difference, so no action or donation is too small,” added Barry. “We encourage our members to unite in a meaningful and collaborative effort by volunteering on their own, with their family and with their friends in all of the events and activities offered. We believe they will strengthen old friendships and develop new ones with those they see around their club, as fellow members and employees.”

2012 Masters Champion, Bubba Watson to Highlight Oakley Golf Team

Unconventional, incomparable, unprecedented: Bubba Watson is a name that stands alone on the PGA Tour and in popular culture in the present day. Watson’s unique southpaw style and exciting on-and-off the course demeanor has brought this down home southern boy from Bagdad, Florida, into international stardom. His style of play is exciting to watch and his personality is endearing to encounter. In summary, it’s hard to find another human being on this planet like Bubba Watson. Because of this, and many other reasons, we are proud to announce the addition of Watson as the highlight to the very promising list of Oakley golf athletes.

Bubba Watson
As stated earlier, there’s just something about Bubba Watson that is hard to describe, hard to explain to the common person. He plays by his own rules and marches to the beat of his own drum. For example, one of the many facets of Watson’s game are his drives. Known as one of the longest drivers on Tour, Bubba can be found sending a golf ball upwards of 350 yards off of the tee. And in the aforementioned, unique “Bubba style,” that drive is usually coming from a pink golf club. Why not, right? Just one more example of the distinctive personality that is Bubba Watson.

Professionally, Watson is most famous for his 2012 Masters Tournament victory. Already with three PGA Tour wins under his belt, Watson became a household name with his emotional win at the 2012 Masters. Watson, who’s best finish in a major tournament up to that point was a runner-up finish at the 2010 PGA Championship, entered the final day at six-under, three strokes off of Peter Hanson’s lead. After recording four consecutive birdies to shoot a final round 68 (-4), Watson found himself tied for the lead with playing-partner Louis Oosthuizen and competing in a sudden death playoff in the biggest tournament in golf. After a pair of pars on the first playoff hole, Watson and Oosthuizen both drove their balls towards the woods on the next playoff hole (10). Watson, getting the worst of the two drives found himself deep in the pine straws and somewhat stranded behind a large tree, leaving him without a clear shot to the pin. What happened next was a shot that will go down as one of the most miraculous and infamous shots in golf history. Watson curled his approach shot around the blocking trees and put the ball within 15 feet of the hole. He proceeded to win the hole and consequently the tournament. His teary and emotional embrace with his mother and friends at the 2012 Masters is something that golf fans will remember for a long, long time.

Beyond his Masters victory, Bubba Watson is known for being one of the all around good guys in golf. While you won’t always find him conforming to the stereotypical “country club” type lifestyle and demeanor on tour, you will find him donating a lot of his time (and prize money) to charity as well as engaging fans in spirited ways (see his 2010 Golf Boys, “Oh, Oh, Oh,” music video with fellow Tour professionals Rickie Fowler, Ben Crane and Hunter Mahan). He has fans cheer while others demand peace and quiet during a tee-shot. In other words, Bubba Watson is one-of-a-kind. So it is very fitting that he will be joining the Oakley golf team for the 2013 season and beyond.

We are proud to welcome Bubba to the Oakley family. His attitude and personality are a welcomed addition to the team of Oakley golfers and athletes beyond his sport. Bubba will fit in quite nicely. We’d like to wish Bubba nothing but the best of luck in the upcoming season and beyond and a warm welcome to the Oakley family.
