(PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C.) – A year after seeing a record-setting performance, Golfweek Magazine’s Program Challenge Tournament returns to Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club for a fifth-straight year on Sept. 6-8, 2015. The tournament features 18 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s squads from 10 different states, including the defending overall team champion, Old Dominion.
The men and women will be broken up into two different divisions, with the men competing at True Blue and the women teeing off at Caledonia. The Program Challenge Tournament will hand out titles to the top men’s and women’s team, along with an overall team title to one collegiate program, which is determined by the program’s men’s and women’s combined total score.
The 18 schools slated to participate include: Austin Peay State (Clarksville, Tenn.), Bethune-Cookman (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Cambell (Buies Creek, N.C.), Elon (Elon, N.C.), Gardner-Webb (Gardner Webb, N.C.), Houston Baptist (Houston, Texas), Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (Indianapolis, Ind.), Jacksonville (Jacksonville, Fla.), Jacksonville State (Jacksonville, Ala.), James Madison (Harrisonburg, Va.), Marshall (Huntington, W.Va.), Mercer (Macon, Ga.), Morehead State (Morehead, Ky.), Old Dominion (Norfolk, Va.), Radford (Radford, Va.), Stetson (DeLand, Fla.), Tennessee Tech (Cookeville, Tenn.) and Valparaiso (Valparaiso, Ind.).
Last year, Old Dominion was the winner on the men’s side and claimed the program title, while Furman won the women’s title. The 2014 Program Challenge Tournament also featured a record-breaking performance from Jacksonville State’s then-senior Tomasz Anderson, who fired a 12-under 60 on the final day of competition.
Anderson’s score not only set the True Blue course record from any tee, but also bested the previous top mark by three strokes.
“This tournament has become one of the highlights of the year at our courses, and always features a competitive field,” said Bob Seganti, director of golf operations of Caledonia Golf & Fish Club and True Blue Golf Club. “We are proud to host these outstanding young golfers and provide them with a one-of-a-kind experience to play with their peers in the ‘golf capitol of the world.’”
The Golfweek Program Challenge is free and open to the public at Caledonia and True Blue. For more information about Caledonia and True Blue, call 800-483-6800 or visit www.FishClub.com.

Product Review: Club Glove - The Last Travel Bag
By Wayne Mills
This isn’t meant as an eat-your-heart-out piece. I am just the humble golf writer guy here to pass on valuable information to the golfers of the world. It is a tough gig sometimes but it is important work and somebody has to do it.
I travel a lot to golf destinations. I have done it for over 20 years and been all around North America and the Caribbean. Having played golf in 38 of the Lower 48, I am closing in on the career State Slam.
In my travels I am in airports and airplanes a lot. Despite all the horror stories I hear about air travel I can honestly say I have had very few problems getting around on airplanes. The airlines actually do a remarkable and safe job in getting people from one place to the other in a rather timely manner.
I have also never lost any luggage. My luggage has never been lost but it is always the worse for wear. I guess in the name of speed the baggage handlers beat the hell out of bags or maybe that’s just where they place the violent sociopaths.
In the name of research I have to take the tools of my trade-golf clubs (in addition to my iPhone, laptop and bottle opener) - wherever I go. In the process I have gone through several travel bags over the years. No more.
I finally have the indestructible Club Glove travel bag whose trademarked slogan is The Last Bag. It has already survived three trips unscathed and is ready for the next one.
Proudly manufactured in the USA, The Club Glove offers an unheard of No Questions Asked 5 year warranty. I have had travel covers fail to survive one trip. If you need another endorsement 90% of all PGA Tour players, whose golf clubs really are the tools of their trade, use the Club Glove travel bag.
Club Glove manufacturer West Coast Trends, Inc. was founded in 1990 by Jeffrey Herold, an entrepreneur, avid surfer, golfer and pilot. While surfing, Jeff wanted to fill a void in the golf marketplace and envisioned transforming his wetsuit into head covers. Soon after he introduced a line of premium neoprene head covers - aptly named The Club Glove - which quickly became popular with golfers of every skill level. Realizing a need for a quality golf travel bag, Jeff spent nearly a year designing the sturdy, dependable "Last Bag." Again aptly named as it may just be the "last bag" for travel you ever have to buy was named one of the top 10 innovations in golf in the last 20 years by Golf Digest.
MSRP IS $299. More info at www.clubglove.com

Poll: Gambling on the Golf Course
Gambling and golf ... The two “vices” have been around a long time. I can see Old Tom turning to his buddies and wagering a beer on the first one to hit a sheep with their mashie.
We have cinematic proof, as well, when Al Czervik bet Judge Smails $100 he’d slice into the woods. Gambling was illegal at Bushwood, of course, but that didn’t stop that pair from partnering up with Ty Webb and Dr. Beeper for a $20,000 match later in the movie.
Personally, I’m not much of a gambler - on the course or otherwise - but I have played a few games when joining various partners at the club. Hammer and Nassau are two games that come to mind.
Curious whether I was in the majority or minority, I posed the question on Google+: Do you gamble on the golf course? If yes, what's your preferred game?
The numerical results? More people (59 percent) shy away from wagering than those who bet (41 percent).
For those who gamble on the course, skins and wolf seem to be the most popular games, with Nassau also played quite often. Brief descriptions follow:
* Skins: Win a hole, win a set amount of money from your partners. This is a very basic form, with variances available.
* Nassau: It's essentially three tournaments (or bets) in one: the front nine, back nine and 18-hole scores all count as separate tournaments or bets.
* Wolf: Game can get pretty involved, but it’s generally played by a foursome with “wolf” alternating between the four from hole to hole. Wolf tees off first and can decide to go “lone wolf” (playing against the three and tripling the bet) before others tee off or pick a partner after each tee shot on that hole. This is where details get fairly long. Google it if you’re interested in more.
Jeremy Black offered up some comments and suggestions: “Wolf is one of the greats. Nassau, Regular Skins or Par to Prove Skins. Greenies, Sandies, Up & Downs, and Press on the18th.”
Blake Waller took it up a notch: “Awesome post. What is golf without a side wager? My 2 favorite are Vegas and Umbrella. Also love 9 point, 6-6-6, and wolf.”
He explained Umbrella a bit more, too.
Blake Waller: “Umbrella is an awesome game to anyone that doesn't know how ... Usually 2 vs 2 game. Every hole there is 5 points available:
1 nearest to hole in reg.
1 low ball
1 low total
2 birdie
If a team gets all 5 on a hole it is called Umbrella and points double. You can also throw rolls and re-rolls in on tee shots to make really interesting.”
Remind me NOT to gamble with Blake Waller.
Lastly, Therese louise Carpenter (Therese Avery) seems a bit paranoid ... “Ha ha this made me laugh! +Rob Thomas do you work for the IRS :)”
I’m not sure how she voted, but she probably cleared her computer’s memory immediately after posting her comment.

Troon to Operate Asian Tour Event
Represents Vietnam’s First Major Golf Championship
(Scottsdale, Ariz.) – Asian Coast Development Ltd (ACDL) has turned to the expertise of Troon to deliver the Ho Tram Open, an Asian Tour-sanctioned professional tournament, and the richest sporting event ever to be held in Vietnam.
Troon, an executive member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation [AGIF], will handle all operations and promotions of the Ho Tram Open, turning to its wealth of global expertise and its specialist event and marketing delivery team. The Ho Tram Open: Asia’s Grandest Stage, will take place December 3-6 at The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip, about two hours from the nation’s largest metropolis, Ho Chi Minh City.
“Troon’s Asia-Pacific team of specialists demonstrated during the global tender process that its standards and objectives match our own,” said Steve Shoemaker, chairman and chief executive officer of ACDL. “To satisfy our vision required a dynamic approach and for us Troon was the clear standout partner to take on an event of this magnitude.”
“What was clear from the outset was Troon’s focus in tailoring a bespoke event strategy in-line with our vision of the Ho Tram Open as a showcase for Vietnam, the Province of Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu and the Ho Tram Strip, as well as a powerful commercial platform for our partners that entertains our guests to the highest order,” Shoemaker added.
Troon’s business has become one of golf’s true global success stories, with projects in nearly 30 countries around the world covering global golf operations, agronomy, events, private residence and estate management and sales and marketing development.
“We understand the responsibilities we have as promoter and organizer of Vietnam’s richest sports event,” said Bruce Glasco, COO, managing director international division Troon Golf Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific. “And we’re 100 percent ready for them. Ho Tram is a unique proposition and has asserted itself as a clear leader in entertainment and hospitality not only in Vietnam, but throughout Asia Pacific. There is a strong fit between Troon’s quality assurance and the ownership’s dedication to excellence, which has formed a strong bond between our businesses.”
The event is poised to announce some headline players from the world of golf, who will be taking on the Greg Norman-designed golf course, The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip, a Golf Facility Member of the AGIF. For instance, the 2016 European Ryder Cup captain and 2011 Open Champion Darren Clarke recently announced he will play in the inaugural event. Clarke, who has won 22 tournaments worldwide — including the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George’s — and participated in seven Ryder Cups, cited the increasing popularity of golf in Vietnam and the vision of Ho Tram Strip as reasons for wanting to compete in the highly anticipated tournament.
“All I keep hearing is that the resort and golf course are nothing short of world-class,” said Clarke. “When I heard more about what the promoters were looking to achieve, it made the decision even easier. It's going to be a great week for everybody with plenty of good golf, excitement and entertainment”
The links-inspired course at The Bluffs Ho Tram Strip has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage, amassing several awards in just its first year and capturing the imagination of the world’s golf media with its searing vistas and unique topography.
“It is easy to see how Troon’s global reputation has escalated to the level it has,” said Ben Styles, vice-president of golf and residential development for the Ho Tram Strip. “We had an instant connection with the team and have been impressed by the professionalism, creativity and attention to detail in bringing our event to life.”

Product Review: Callaway Xfer Vibe
Have you ever played a round of golf without golf shoes? You’re slipping all over the place, right? Have you played in uncomfortable golf shoes? By the turn (if you’ve made it that far), you’re agonizing over every step and praying for the final putt on to drop ... before you do.
Having comfortable golf shoes is important. But there are so many from which to choose. I’ve paid top dollar for a European shoe and tested more gimmick(y) shoes than I care to remember. There are at least a dozen pairs of shoes in the golf room at the moment - some better than others.
Golf footwear is a tricky mistress because no two feet are the same. You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs before you find that prince ... or shoe. In a sea of despair, however, a bright light emerged - Callaway Golf.
Even the top-selling shoe in the industry isn’t going to be right for everyone, so having a trusted name isn’t a guaranteed winner. We put the Callaway Xfer Vibe to the test.
The first thing you’ll notice - even before putting the Xfer Vibe on - is how lightweight it is. Having walked 18 holes in heavy, leather shoes, weight is a major selling point.
Before slipping them on, I bent, twisted and manipulated the Xfer Vibe. Again, flexibility goes a very long way when choosing the right golf shoe.
On the foot and laced up, comfort was amazing. I had not taken a swing, but I can say with 100 percent certainty that the Xfer Vibe was wonderfully cushioned, boasted a snug, no-pinch fit, and had ample room in the toe box while staying in place on my heel.
Lightweight, flexible and comfortable ... the Callaway Xfer Vibe is 3-for-3. But I can say the same for my Asics running shoe. How is the playability?
My original concern about spikeless golf shoes was traction. While many are excellent, there are plenty that fall short in this category. The Xfer Vibe delivers - holding your feet to the ground swing after swing. You’ll have to feel their “triangulated traction” for yourself - with varying patterns for uphill, downhill and lateral movement.
How about craftsmanship? With a name like Callaway, you’d expect quite a bit of quality and the company backs up its product with a 30-day comfort guarantee. And, while I wouldn’t recommend standing in a pond, there is a two-year limited water-resistant warranty covering any material or workmanship flaws that may result in water leaking into the shoes.
Callaway touts “out-of-the-box comfort” and I can’t disagree. As I said before, finding the right shoe for your foot is not easy, so plan to try on several makes and models. If you’re in the market for a spikeless golf shoe, do yourself a favor and make sure the Xfer Vibe is on your radar.

Having comfortable golf shoes is important. But there are so many from which to choose. I’ve paid top dollar for a European shoe and tested more gimmick(y) shoes than I care to remember. There are at least a dozen pairs of shoes in the golf room at the moment - some better than others.
Xfer Vibe Traction |

Product Review: Imperial Headwear Tailgate Collection
The start of the college football season kicks off Sept. 3. All across the Buckeye State you’ll be hearing one person yelling “O-H” and being answered by a chorus of ”I-O” ... music to Ohio State fans’ ears.
Just in time for the action, Imperial Headwear has unveiled its Tailgate Collection - with preppy cotton hats, visors and bucket hats.
Each hat features the state outline with a defining characteristic of each state. For instance, “The Cuyahoga” is a white bucket hat with red trim. The outline of Ohio is filled with the state flag.
As cool as the hats are, they also have creative names. The three baseball-style caps from Ohio are named “The Buck Off,” “The Columbus” and “The O-H-I-O.”
While Ohio has more than one Division I college, The Ohio State University clearly rules the state (and the nation as defending National Champions). States with multiple favorites - imagine California and Alabama - come with more options. Bruins vs. Trojans? Tide vs. Tigers? Pick your side and show your pride!
Other states included in the collection are: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

That same technology has now been applied to a line of wheeled-luggage that includes a suitcase and a carry-on. ClubGlider Suitcase offers the same ease of use as the golf travel bag thanks to the extendable leg that supports 100% of the weight and then simply retracts away for travel. The suitcase is constructed with the same highly durable, ballistic-style nylon as the ClubGlider Meridian golf travel bag. The ClubGlider Carry-On coordinates with the suitcase and is sized to fit in airplane overhead bins. Both pieces are available now at $349.99 for the suitcase and $239.99 for the carry-on.

Games People Play on Prince Edward Island's Cavendish Resort Area
Prince Edward Island’s Cavendish resort area offers a wealth of history, beauty and some of golf course architecture’s most recognizable signatures
(Prince Edward Island, Canada) – As the largest seasonal resort area on Canada’s Prince Edward Island, the community of Cavendish is known for its mystique and its classic coastline.
Much of the beauty comes from Cavendish’s red sandstone cliffs, magical beaches and rolling farm fields; a good amount of the community’s charm derives from its “Anne of Green Gables” lore — the legendary novel by L.M. Montgomery.
Increasingly, however, this area located less than 40 minutes away from the hub of Charlottetown has become known as much as anything else for its outstanding golf.
Of course, the stories that accompany the golf courses are seemingly endless. But here’s one that may just wake up your golf-and-seafood appetite.
While the mussel generates the biggest fanfare for golfers at Canada’s Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club, another shellfish – the oyster – is one you can really bet on. Pardon the pun. But it’s true.
The club, located just inland from the north shore of Prince Edward Island overlooking Cavendish, has become famous for its complimentary mussels – fresh from local aqua farms. Though the mussel is used to entice golfers to hang around after their rounds and swill a few beverages, it’s the oyster that determines at least one yearly champion across the elevated layout.
The story started one day long ago during a game between good friends.
Former general manager Jeff Trainor and Glasgow Hills golf operations manager Chris Ferguson wanted to spice their golf matches up a bit, so they always played for oysters. Every hole was match play and every hole would be played for an oyster, with a birdie counting for two oysters. At the end of the year, the duo would celebrate the season and whoever ended up with the most oysters had to pay for a nice meal out.
The two players are so evenly matched, the oyster drama often comes down to the final game. Several times, the year-long match has come down to fewer than three oysters
“The most it ever got to was 18,” Ferguson said. “I’d like to say I had a lot of injuries that year.”
For good players, the ‘double-oyster’ holes at Glasgow Hills, a ridgeline, 2001 design by Les Furber — one of the Canada’s most prolific architects — are Nos. 5, 9, 10, 11 and 12. All par 4s, No. 5 plays 234-yards from the blue tees where a tee shot down the left side hugging the bunkers opens up the green for a nice approach. No. 9 is a short dogleg featuring an island green from a short approach.
Positioning is the key from a blind tee shot on No. 10, a hole that plays downhill and firm. No. 11 is another enticing hole where playing right off the tee to avoid the fairway bunker on the left will provide and excellent chance for birdie. No. 12, yet another par 4 in the sequence, is particularly precarious when the wind is really blowing.
“You have to make a couple of birdies on those holes to be good,” Ferguson says. “If you don’t, it may be an uphill climb [it’s literally an uphill climb as it is from 13-18] from there.”
As for the hole that gives Ferguson the most fits, that would be No. 8, a 384-yard par 4 from the blue tees that plays uphill adding to the length. An elevated green, although void of bunkers, requires a delicate touch on a miss. The putting there can be quite difficult, as the green begs for a three jack.
“A lot of times I just put the ball in my pocket,” Ferguson admits. “I’ll give it to him. He never makes birdie on No. 8 anyway, so I know it’s just a one-oyster hole. Plus, No. 8 comes after I’ve probably won an oyster on No. 6 or No. 7. But then I have to, because I give it right back.”
Glasgow Hills Resort and Golf Club is located atop the rolling hills of New Glasgow. The dramatic property overlooks the enchanting Cavendish Region, which features three other must plays as well: Green Gables Golf Club, Eagles Glenn and Andersons Creek Golf Club.
Established in 1939, Green Gables was designed by one of the world’s most renowned architects, Stanley Thompson. As the island’s most storied design, this seaside escape is also the only golf layout located in the middle of the Anne of Green Gables experience.
Eagles Glenn, meanwhile, is another championship golf course routed in the heart of the Cavendish region. Legendary Canadian architect Graham Cooke created a unique Scottish heritage challenge over 300 acres of picturesque countryside.
Andersons Creek Golf Club rounds out the primary Cavendish foursome, and this course’s main feature is the namesake creek that runs through it. Like Eagles Glenn, it was artfully crafted by Cooke and provides a slightly more rolling test of golf than usually found close to the coast.
Still, what separates Glasgow Hills from these courses around Cavendish and every other venue across Prince Edward Island for that matter are the dramatic views of the River Clyde and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They provide an even more spectacular setting in which to play from high above. While the undulation challenges golfers, the views help inspire them.
Of course, these are just a few of the highlights that golf on Prince Edward Island affords.

AHEAD Introduces ChromaPlate Technique
New process allows fast turnaround, small minimum orders on logoed accessory items
(NEW BEDFORD, Mass.) – Touting a fast turnaround time, plus the ability to accept small minimum orders, AHEAD this week formally introduced ChromaPlate, a new technique that allows the company to apply full-color custom graphics to metal accessory items.
According to Chuck Lord, AHEAD’s chief creative officer, the proprietary technique will be especially attractive to companies or golf courses that are staging golf tournaments or events who require a fast turnaround on items such as bag tags, divot repair tools, poker chips and money clips, all adorned with a course or event logo.
“There are several benefits customers gain with ChromaPlate,” Lord added. “We can turn around these custom accessories orders very quickly, and for small minimum orders. The technique works well with intricate logos, logos with gradients or blends, and small text … all with unlimited colors. All of this has created custom accessory opportunities for our buyers that didn’t previously exist. In addition, we are able to assemble it all in great looking, fully customized, metal tins that will likely end up on people’s desks and shelves for years to come.”
Since the company introduced its accessories line in 2001, Lord said the response from customers has grown significantly over the years. The concept for ChromaPlate™, he noted, was developed based in response to customer need and request.
Examples of how ChromaPlate has been used to date are available by downloading the AHEAD Accessories Spring 2016 Catalog — aheadweb.com/accessories.

TGA Premier Junior Golf Franchise Acquired by CSC Golf Management in Southern California
Multiple course operator gains major market advantage through community feeder system
(Temecula, CA) – As the CEO of CSC Golf Management Company (CSC), which oversees multiple golf properties in Southern California, PGA Professional Mark Stevens was seeking an advantage over competition that would help build business and ensure his courses future.
Acquiring the TGA Premier Junior Golf (TGA) franchise territory in Temecula, Calif., creates that advantage. CSC is also the first golf management company to invest in the TGA franchise model.
“We are going to engage thousands of young families and youth through TGA, many of whom have never played the game and direct them to our golf course properties, which will drive revenue and help to ensure the future of not only our properties, but our great sport,” Stevens said.
The innovative TGA program has become the nation’s leader in making golf available to the general public. It places the game on a level playing field with other mainstream sports as an activity of choice for youth. The unique franchise business model runs introductory programs at schools and community centers, and recreational programs at golf courses and parks.
TGA (Teach, Grow, Achieve) has brought over 465,000 new golfers into the sport and made the game of golf available to more than 1.5 million families across the country. Programs activate youth ages 3-15 and their parents ages 25-45.
Stevens, after seeing first-hand how the TGA programs successfully performed at a golf facility in San Diego he managed, decided to acquire the TGA franchise covering the territory of Temecula, Murrieta, and Menifee. He also made it a family business by involving his wife Julie and their sons Bayley and Jeremy. Julie is a schoolteacher, who understands the value of enrichment programs for youth. Bayley and Jeremy will also teach programs.
PGA professionals Kris Miller and Gena Dells will help to develop the TGA Player Pathway for the franchise by helping students and families learn the value of the game and its life lessons. This will include directing them to the CSC managed courses Temeku Hills Country Club (Now the Legends), Redhawk Golf Club, Links at Summerly and The Glen Ivy Golf Club for junior camps, leagues and clinics along with the “Get Golf Ready” program for adults.
From there the player pathway continues to the competitive level with enhanced skill development and lessons with CSC PGA Professionals, PGA Junior League Golf involvement, and the national Drive Chip and Putt competition.
“As PGA professionals, educators and leaders we are excited to build on the TGA program that has been started in our area,” Stevens said. “To be able to impact and grow our game while enriching the lives of youth through TGA lessons including the incorporated STEM academics is very fulfilling.”

Field Set for 32nd Annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship
Golfers from 48 States, 28 Nations Coming to Myrtle Beach For One-of-a-Kind Event
(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) - Nearly 3,400 golfers from 48 states and 28 countries are preparing to descend on the Grand Strand for the 32nd annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, golf’s largest and most inclusive event.
A 72-hole, net stroke play tournament, the World Am will be played August 31-September 4 on 57 Myrtle Beach golf courses. Players will be separated into six divisions and 72 flights based on age, gender and handicap. After four rounds of competition, all flight winners and ties advance to the World Championship Playoff at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club.
At the heart of the World Am’s competitive success is the game’s best and most aggressively enforced handicap monitoring system, which levels the playing field for all participants.
Myrtle Beach, the game’s most popular destination, is the only place capable of hosting a tournament as large as the World Am, and the depth and quality of the area’s courses, are a primary attraction. Of the 57 courses hosting the event, 11 have been ranked among the nation’s top 100 public courses in recent years.
As important as the golf is, it’s only half the fun at the World Am. Each night players gather at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to enjoy the “World’s Largest 19th Hole,” a 120,000-square-foot golf extravaganza. Players receive free food and drinks, live entertainment, including former American Idol winner Taylor Hicks this year, a golf expo and celebrity guests, among many other activities.
Joining the nearly 3,400 golfers at this year’s tournament will be two-time major champion John Daly, former PGA Tour player and Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer, television personality Win McMurry, and national radio hosts Brian Katrek and John Maginnes.
The World Am is a one-of-a-kind event, bringing golfers from different cultures, ability levels and backgrounds together to celebrate the game.
Here are some numbers to digest as the 2015 Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship approaches:
• 6: Number of competitive divisions, ranging from men 49 and under to the super seniors (70+), a women's division and the recently created gross division
• 36: Courses used daily
• 57: Courses utilized for the entire week
• 72: Total number of flights
• 92: Approximate number of players at each course daily
• 5,000: Estimated participants and guests visiting the World’s Largest 19th Hole nightly at the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center
• 102: Estimated kegs of beer consumed for the week at the 19th Hole
• +3-40.4: Range of handicaps in the competition
• 16,579 kilometers: The approximate distance from Adelaide, Australia – Christopher Kay’s home – to Myrtle Beach, the farthest commute of any 2015 competitor.

Galvin Green Named Official Team Supplier of Outerwear to European Ryder Cup Squad
Global Leader in High-Performance Golf Clothing to Outfit 2016, 2018 Captains, Players, Caddies
Through this partnership, Galvin Green will first provide its premium waterproof garments to Captain Darren Clarke, his vice captains, team members and their caddies during next year’s matches at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The ultra-lightweight, breathable rain suits will also be offered for purchase by the wider golfing population after the competition concludes.
“Galvin Green’s garments proved to be very popular when part of the official Ryder Cup range at Gleneagles,” said Richard Hills, European Ryder Cup Director. “We are particularly pleased to have one of the most sought-after outerwear brands in golf supporting Europe when they defend the trophy next year.”
A final decision on the specific garments to be supplied by Galvin Green is yet to be made by Clarke. Currently under consideration are three different fabrics, including a brand new technology being tested by GORE-TEX technicians in Scotland. Each garment is subjected to a period of at least 50-hours of exhaustive testing in different playing conditions, including simulated heavy downpours in a rain chamber. The results will be scrutinized to determine the best option for producing up to six prototypes that are expected to be ready for play-testing one year out from the event itself.
Whatever the final outcome, the ultimate jacket will feature Galvin Green’s trademark quality and streamlined tailoring, along with water-repellant zippers and adjustable collar, chest width and bottom edge. Matching waterproof trousers will retain the company’s customary long leg openings for easy dress, elasticated waist fittings, CORDURA fabric for extra abrasion resistance on the leg bottoms and fleece-lined pockets.
“Our ambition is to create a thoroughly modern, standout rain suit in stretch fabric that offers superb playability in a wide range of conditions,” said Mats Lundqvist, Lead Designer, Galvin Green. “It will be a little bit different in appearance to anything seen before at The Ryder Cup, but we know the captains, players and caddies will be thrilled with the playing experience it offers.”
In conjunction with outfitting the European Team, Galvin Green will also launch a dedicated Ryder Cup collection before the 2018 event at Le Golf National near Paris, when The Ryder Cup returns to Continental Europe for the first time in 21 years.
Based in Sweden, Galvin Green is a pure golf brand that developed the sport’s first apparel layering system – the Multi-Layer Concept – more than a decade ago. This distinctive approach uses leading-edge fabric technologies to ensure the dry comfort, thermal regulation and outer protection that helps players optimize performance.

Virginia Commonwealth Alum Lanto Griffin wins 16th annual Kandy Waters Memorial Classic in Playoff
Griffin birdies first hole of sudden death against Malone alum Justin Lower and Georgia alum Adam Mitchell to grab his first Swing Thought Tour Pro Series win against one of the toughest fields to date
(North Augusta, S.C.) – Heading into the final round of the 2015 Kandy Waters Memorial Classic being held at the River Golf Club in North Augusta, S.C., Virginia Commonwealth alum Lanto Griffin found himself in the final pairing and just a shot back of leader and former University of Georgia star Adam Mitchell. Leading up to the event, Griffin wasn’t even sure if he would play in the event that has been the longest running tournament on the Swing Thought Tour at 16 years. It was not until Monday of the tournament week, when Griffin missed playing his way into the PGA TOUR Wyndham Championship by a single shot, he thought to himself “you know what, I’m playing well, I’m going to Augusta” and he entered online last second.
The decision paid off handsomely for Griffin as the 27 year old from Jacksonville Beach, Fla. shot rounds of 66-66-65-65 for a 262 stroke total, putting him at 22 under par for the event, and into a three-way tie with Mitchell, a member of the winning 2009 Walker Cup team, and Nicklaus Award Winner Justin Lower out of Malone University. Lower, the winner of the Swing Thought Tour’s exemption into the 2013 PGA TOUR Reno-Tahoe Open, made the biggest move of the three on Saturday shooting a final round 63 to move up from fourth and into a playoff with Mitchell and Griffin. It was Griffin, however, who would drain a 14 foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death, hole 18, to earn his 1st Swing Thought Tour Pro Series win and the $20,000 1st place prize that comes with it. Mitchell, playing out of Atlanta, Ga., and Lower, a native of Canal Fulton, Ohio, each earned $8,960 for finishing runner-up.
The birdie putt to win the playoff almost never happened as Griffin had the opportunity to put the event away earlier with almost the same putt, only shorter. It was a tough putt, as Griffin explained, “because it’s lightning fast and so hard to read”. Putting from the same line, only 10 feet closer, Griffin missed what would have been the winning birdie putt in regulation. This time, in sudden death, Griffin drained the putt providing himself with, as he put it, “redemption”.
The win comes on the back of a solid season so far for Griffin as he had finished 13th or better in 6 of the 7 events leading up to the week including a 3rd place finish at Disney and a T2 in Tallahassee. With his lone Swing Thought Tour win coming previously in a winter event, Griffin made a statement by grabbing his first Pro Series win against one the largest and most competitive fields the Swing Thought has had this season, thanks in large part to the Swing Thought Tour’s recent acquisition of the eGolf Tour.
“With the Swing Thought Tour and eGolf Tour combining, it’s a great feeling getting a win against the best of the best both tours have to offer,” stated Griffin, “it’s an honor to have won at such a special event and such a special place as the River Golf Club, my favorite course I’ve played on this tour all year.”
Former Alabama-Birmingham standout Hunter Hawkins out of Fort Payne, Ala., the 3rd member of the final grouping Saturday, shot a final round 70 to finish at 17 under par and in a tie for 6th with Scott Vincent out of Blacksburg, Va. and defending Kandy Waters Memorial Classic Champion J.C. Horne out of Ormond Beach, Fla. Vincent played collegiately at Virginia Tech while Horne, a member of the Web.com Tour this season, starred at North Florida. Hawkins, Horne, and Vincent each received $4,460 for finishing T6. Horne shot a final round 64 to move up 5 spots from T11 to T6.
Former University of South Carolina star Caleb Sturgeon, out of Laurens, S.C., finished solo 4th at -19 earning $6,760 while St. Simons Island, Ga. native Bobby Wyatt, who is competing in his rookie season as a professional after leading the University of Alabama to back to back National Championships, finished alone in 5th and earned $5,760.
Augusta’s Chase Parker was the top local player finishing in a tie for 12th with last week’s winner and former Auburn University star Will McCurdy, who now makes Auburn his home. Both players played all four rounds in the 60’s to finish at 14 under par.
First round leader Eric Frazetta, out of Long Beach, Cal., shot rounds of 61-71-71-69 to finish at 12 under par and in 16th place. The 1st round 61 by the former Chico State star set a new course record at the River Golf Club, a facility which hosted the 1st ever Kandy Waters Memorial Classic. The score was an accomplishment indeed considering the hundreds of top professionals, the likes of Major Champions such as Zach Johnson and Ben Curtis, who have competed on this course in this event (then as the NGA/Hooters Tour). Some other PGA TOUR winners to have competed in the Kandy Waters Memorial Classic include Brian Harman, Kevin Streelman, Camilo Villegas, and Augusta’s own Vaughn Taylor. This season’s leading money winner on the Web.com Tour, Patton Kizzire, finished tied for 2nd in this event just two seasons ago.
The Swing Thought Tour would like to thank River Golf Club Director of Golf Chris Verdery, Head Course Superintendent Patrick Murphy, and the Members, Volunteers, and Staff at the River Golf Club for once again hosting and bringing the Kandy Waters Memorial Classic, one of the signature events of the Swing Thought Tour, back home!

Product Review: 2UNDR Boxer Briefs
When the opportunity arose to review 2UNDR for American Golfer, I thought it would take some balls to connect underwear to golf. Upon further reflection, I knew I’d be nuts not to try.
I’ve written articles about the benefits of a good golf shirt - describing the right shirt as a valuable piece of equipment. So why not skivvies?
Turns out, 2UNDR may be the hidden jewel in a sea of golf apparel. What makes these boxer briefs better than the pair you’re wearing? Two words: Joey Pouch. Constructed of breathable material, this innovation supports your boys in the comfort and style befitting a king and his court.
There are two styles of 2UNDR from which to choose - SwingShift and GearShift. While both are soft, comfortable and breathable, I prefer the GearShift for one reason - Coldskin by Garmatex. This high-performance thermal-reduction fabric promotes extra cooling where excess heat builds up - reducing the body temperature by 3 to 6 degrees.
Both styles also offer the no-drip tip - a moisture-control layer that keeps guys dry “for those busy, single-shake type of days.” Whether on the course or in khakis on Casual Friday, no guy wants to leave that kind of a mark.
Recommendation: Next time you tee off, slide into a pair of 2UNDER briefs and treat your twins to a four-hour vacation.
Check out www.2undr.com for more information and to order a pair (or two) for yourself.

Getting to Know: John Fought, Golf Course Architect
American Golfer: When did you start playing golf?
John Fought: I starting playing golf when I was seven years old. My grandmother starting me playing and of course I got hooked on the game at an early age, though I loved baseball as well.
AG: How did you become a golf course designer?
JF: When I was on the PGA Tour I became interested in building a great championship golf course in my old home town of Portland, Oregon. At a tournament in Florida I was paired with Jack Nicklaus and expressed my desire to find out more about the design process. He introduced me to his senior designer, Bob Cupp. When I was injured in 1985 I had the time to begin apprenticing with Bob and he mentored me until 1995 when I form my own firm. Golf course design is not taught in any degree in college; there are very few golf course architects, so I learned from the ground up from Bob. Incidentally the first course we did together was Pumpkin Ridge!
AG: Why did you choose a career in golf course design?
JF: I love golf and when I could not play (injuries – back) I became interested in design. I have a degree in Accounting from BYU but was not prone to that field. Design is my true love!
AG: In your opinion, have any design trends hurt the game?
JF: After the golden age designers were dead there came an age of university-trained landscape architects that really did not have an understanding of golf or its history. The era was the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s when a lot of poor golf courses were developed. I also think when housing developers discovered they could sell lots around golf courses it led to a lot of really bad designs. However, there has been a resurgence of history-minded and passionate designers that are leading the way today.
AG: How can we grow the game of golf?
JF: Get people to play outside rather than spend all of their time on iPhones and iPads! All sports are suffering from the decline in activity. Golf is a wonderful game for families, business people and just anyone who loves to be outdoors.
AG: Do you have a specific design philosophy?
JF: I do not have an identifiable motif that I follow. I work to make my design fit the land so heavy earthmoving and unnatural features are eliminated. I like classic style design and have spent my life studying these types of golf courses. I have a trip planned to England and Wales in early September to tour many of the great designs located there.
AG: Of all the holes you’ve designed, do you have a favorite (why)?
JF: That is a difficult question because its like asking if I have a favorite child! I am currently renovating Windsong and I love the holes on that course, especially 15. It plays around a hollow in the middle of the hole and forces players to bite-off as much as they dare when playing at the green. The green is relatively large and rewarding when you muster the courage to play a long approach in the perfect location. This hole requires two well struck shots while allowing timid players to play safely to a large safe location. This hole is beautiful and interesting.
AG: What’s your “dream foursome” (living or dead, golfer or non-golfer)?
JF: Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. Wonderful great players!
AG: Is there a “bucket list” location in/on which to design?
JF: That is easy – a great piece of links land located along the sea. Does not matter where (Scotland, Ireland or Oregon).
AG: What is the future of golf course design?
JF: I hope bright with many great sites yet to happen! But not too many courses!

JumboMax Grips Played by the Winner of the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship
(Ocala, FL) - In June, JumboMax Grips helped one of the top ranked amateur golfers in the world, a junior from SMU, become the 2015 NCAA Men's Division I Individual National Champion, and now they've helped him capture the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship as well.
The 36 hole finals, held at Olympia Fields Country Club, just outside Chicago, was decided on the 12th Hole as the match finished 7 and 6. It was the largest margin of victory in the past 16 years of the Championship.
He had a 2-up lead after the morning round of 18, and then won seven holes in a nine-hole stretch to go 8 up with eight holes to play. This U.S. Amateur victory earns him exemptions into the first three majors of 2016, including the Masters, and extended his collegiate career at SMU.
As only the fifth player in history to win both titles in the same year, he's in elite company alongside Jack Nicklaus (1961), Phil Mickelson (1990), Tiger Woods (1996) and Ryan Moore (2004).
He is highly intelligent, a physics major who pursued the discipline at SMU because he wanted to learn more about the golf swing, As a player who cares more about the game than the accolades and does everything in golf his own way, it was the history that meant the most.
"Having my name etched on this trophy with the great Bob Jones, as well as Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, all those guys, it's incredible," he said. "I can't even imagine what I just did. It won't sink in; I'm sure, for the next couple days. But I'm honored."
"What an amazing accomplishment," said John Mazzanoble, V.P. of Sales for JumboMax Grips. "All of us at JumboMax would like to say congratulations on an incredible year of golf and say that we're very excited to see what the future holds. A victory like this proves that whether you're a weekend warrior or the #1 Ranked Amateur in the World, golfers of all skill levels can benefit from this technology."

FORE Georgia Reports on Recent Success of Georgians on PGA, Champions, Web.com Tours
(MARIETTA, GA) - FORE Georgia (www.ForeGeorgia.com), the "Official Golfers' Magazine of the Georgia PGA," reported on the success Georgians had on the PGA, Champions and Web.com Tours this past weekend.
It was a clean sweep as a trio of Georgia golfers captured victories at the Wyndham Championship (PGA), Boeing Classic (Champions) and News Sentinel Open (Web.com).
Davis Love, a St. Simons resident, became the third oldest winner in PGA Tour history, taking the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., for the third time. Love shot a final round 64 to win by a shot with a 17-under 263 total, coming from four behind after 54 holes. The victory gets Love into the FedExCup Playoffs after beginning the week 186 on the points list. He also earns a spot in the 2016 Masters. The victory was the first for the 51-year-old Love since 2008.
Atlanta's Billy Andrade scored his first individual victory on the Champions Tour, winning the Boeing Classic in Seattle. Andrade, part of the winning team in the Legends of Golf earlier this year, survived a triple bogey in the final round to shoot 73 and win by one over Bernhard Langer with a 9-under 207 total.
Patton Kizzire, like Love a St. Simons resident, scored his second Web.com Tour victory of 2015, winning by four shots in Knoxville after closing with back-to-back 64s for a 20-under 264 total. Kizzire leads the tour in earnings and is enjoying one of the best seasons in tour history with two runner-up showings and two other top-4 finishes.

Honours Golf to Manage Calvert Crossings
(Birmingham, Ala.) – Honours Golf, the premier golf management company in the Southeastern United States, has been selected to provide club management and agronomic services for Calvert Crossing, a private club located in Calhoun, a suburb of Monroe, La.
Calvert Crossing is a private country club located in the Calvert Estates community. At the center of the club, is the 18-hole championship golf course co-designed by John Floyd (who worked under Jack Nicklaus) and Bill Zimmerebner. This modern design, carved throughout the rolling hills of the West Ouachita Parish region, is considered by many as a beautiful and peaceful “walk in the woods.” The manicured fairways are lined with towering and mature hardwoods and pine trees and the undulating greens provide a variety of hole locations. It’s a shot maker’s course, so strategy and accuracy are key. Calvert Crossing is also the only club in the region that offers two sets of tees for junior golfers.
“We selected Honours based on their solid reputation in the Southeast and our own personal experiences we had at their Gulf Shores properties - Peninsula and Craft Farms,” said Todd Perry, a partner of Calvert Crossing. “We look forward to all the enhancements they will make to help us elevate our members’ experience including priority access to the Honours and Troon network of properties world-wide.”
In addition to golf, Calvert Crossing offers a fully stocked golf shop and a warm and inviting pub-style restaurant featuring specialty salads, freshly-prepared burgers and sandwiches, and weekly Sunday brunches.
The banquet facility hosts special events ranging from weddings and holiday parties to business luncheons and political rallies. The club also offers two hard-surface tennis courts and an outdoor swimming facility.
