Product Review: Leupold GX-4i²

GPS versus laser rangefinder. You have people arguing for both sides, but Leupold may have swung the pendulum in favor of the latter with its GX-4i² rangefinder. If you’re looking for a unit to provide more than just yardage to a target, then check out this beauty.

As you can imagine, you can quickly and easily find a yardage to your target, be it the pin, a tree, river, etc. But the GX-4i² goes way beyond that by offering the innovative “Club Selector.” Enter your typical distances for the 8, 6 and 4 irons in your bag and Club Selector will then make club recommendations based on the True Golf Range (TGR) of your shot.

Unlike rangefinders and GPS systems that stop at basic line-of-sight ranging, TGR takes into consideration inclines, declines, altitude, and temperature - elements that affect the actual distance and club selection. When combining TGR with Club Selector, golfers get a specific recommendation for which club to hit based on their own personal game.

Here’s a small catch ... USGA Rule 14-3 states that a player may not use any artificial device or unusual equipment that “might assist him making a stroke or in his play.” Leupold has the nonconformity covered, though. A chrome faceplate (included) disables True Golf Range and Club Selector features to make the GX-4i² permitted for use under the rules of golf.

In the spirit of late-night infomercials ... But wait, there’s more!

Shaky hands inhibit your ability to lock onto a pin? Pinhunter 2 filters out background images and makes zeroing-in on the target faster. Prism Lock - combined with PinHunter 2 - gives an audible tone when the rangefinder finds the prism, and the distance is immediately displayed.

When playing in fog, many rangefinders provide measurements from the first target returned, which in some cases is the fog between you and the pin. The GX-4i² cuts through the pea soup when “Fog Mode” is activated.

Scan Mode takes multiple readings in one sweep by holding down the power button. The display will continuously update with accurate line-of-site measurements.

The Leupold GX-4i² will help any golfer, from scratch to high handicapper. Imagine having a personal caddy who knows your game better than you do. The Leupold GX-4i² is easy to use and will benefit any game.
