(LEMONT, Ill.) - The newly renovated Cog Hill Golf and Country Club's Dubsdread, has been named to the GOLF Magazine's 2009 Top 100 Course in the U.S. list. The Jemsek-owned golf facility and home course of the PGA Tour's BMW Championship is ranked 87th . Cog Hill was one of 14 courses that made the list for the first time.
"This is one of the industry's toughest list to get on because it combines public, private and resort courses, so the competition is very tough and we are thrilled to make this list for the first time," said Frank Jemsek , CEO, Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. "The renovation by Rees Jones has been very well received by our customers, the raters and earlier this month by the PGA Tour players. They all have been very positive about all the changes, especially the greens and bunker work. We are pleased to continue to provide Chicagoland golfers one of the best daily-fee experiences in the country."
After undergoing a $5 million renovation by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, Dubsdread reopened in May 2009. The original routing of the award-winning Dubsdread remains intact. The comprehensive renovation upgraded the course's features and restored the strategy, design integrity and overall character inherent in the work of original architects Dick Wilson and Joe Lee. Average golfers will continue to enjoy the beauty and playability of this traditional style golf course while the best players in the world will encounter a challenging, but fair, test.
The biennial Top 100 Courses in the U.S. list appears in GOLF Magazine's October issue. The rankings were determined by a panel of 100 members, which is comprised of Ryder Cup players, architects, amateur champions, photographers, journalists, historian and course connoisseurs. Each panelist ranks the course on design rhythm, creativity, setting and conditioning.
Cog Hill was the only public course among the six Illinois courses that made the list. The other courses that were ranked are; Chicago Golf Club (No. 15), Medinah No. 3 (No. 36), Shoreacres (No. 43), Olympia Fields North (No. 86), Butler National (No. 93).
Cog Hill Golf and Country Club is one the premier public golf facilities in Chicago. Located in Lemont, Ill., Cog Hill features 72 holes of championship golf, a year-round learning center and a newly-renovated 35,000 sq. ft clubhouse. Dubsdread is the home of the PGA Tour's BMW Championship. For information on Cog Hill, call 866.264.4455 or visit www.coghillgolf.com.

31st Annual Angels Baseball Foundation 65 Roses Golf Classic
Warrior Custom Golf is proud to support the ''31st Annual Angels Baseball Foundation 65 Roses Golf Classic'' benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation held Nov. 2 at the Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park, California. 1979 Angels MVP Don Baylor and Angels Manager Mike Sciosia will co-host the event in an effort to raise funds to find a cure for the devastating disease, Cystic Fibrosis. Since the events inception, it has raised close to $5 million dollars to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
In 1979, after he saw the devastating effects of Cystic Fibrosis, Don Baylor decided he wanted to do more. Don Baylor and the Angels took the offense by trading baseball bats for golf clubs to create the Sixty-Five Roses Golf Classic. The event continues to receive support from Angels Manager Mike Sciosia and the Angels Baseball Foundation.
This year's tournament in its 31st consecutive year is expected to attract 230 golfers and generate over $250,000. "The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation would like to thank Warrior Custom Golf for getting involved with this event and in turn helping children with Cystic Fibrosis," said Erin Ehlers Director of Special Events for the So Cal-Orange County Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Proceeds from the event will go to support the continual work of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation which started back in 1955, when a group of parents set their sights to advance understanding of this disease, to create new treatments, provide specialized care for children and to find a cure.
Special guest eleven year old ''Emily Daskas'' who is battling with CF will be performing at the event. Emily's family is extremely active raising funds for a cure. Each month Emily takes over 1100 pills, takes 180 breathing treatments, has 15 hours of vest treatments and spends 120 hours on a feeding tube. Each month! While the treatments and doctor's visits take many, many hours, this has not slowed Emily down.
To learn more about Emily visit www.emilysarmy.com.
About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

GolfWorld Readers’ Choice Awards Hand Top Honors to Circling Raven
(WORLEY, Idaho) – GolfWorld magazine readers cast more than 46,000 votes and 600,000 criteria evaluations which led to its just released second annual Readers' Choice Awards, and Circling Raven Golf Club came out a resounding top choice.
GolfWorld readers think so highly of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe owned and operated course located in the Idaho panhandle – a scenic, short drive from Spokane Airport (GEG) – that they voted it No. 2 nationally in the all-important “Overall Value” category, top five for “Quality of Course”.
Only erstwhile Ryder Cup competition venue Kiawah Island scored higher in the all-important “Value” category. Kiawah, Bandon Dunes, Whistling Straits and TPC Sawgrass were the only four properties to score higher than Circling Raven in “Quality of Course.” Of course, these courses have hosted Ryder Cup, USGA and or PGA of America championships.
“Critical acclaim is important and we value it to a high degree because it means we’re doing many things exceptionally well,” said Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel CEO David Lasarte-Meeks. “However, being honored by GolfWorld readers – and so highly for value and course quality – is particularly gratifying. These are people who spend their hard-earned dollars to play and who deliver unvarnished objectivity through their votes.”
Value and course quality aren’t the only two categories where Circling Raven shined. It scored so high in the categories of service, food/dining, course conditions, speed of play, and golf pro shop that it not only earned a place in GolfWorld’s Readers’ Choice Top 50 Resort Courses, but it ranks No. 19 overall.
Considering the vast majority of Top 50 Resort Courses cost almost double Circling Raven to play it’s no wonder it scored so well in “Overall Value.”
Complete results can be found at:

Circling Raven is an amenity of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel. This is the second national honor Circling Raven has recently received for its value. Golf Digest magazine ranked Circling Raven No. 17 in its “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses Re-Ranked By Price” list (September 2009 issue), which was only available to members of the publication’s esteemed “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” list for 2009-10.
Also ranking high on the GolfWorld Readers’ Choice list is Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, which is a beautiful 30-minute drive from Circling Raven. Both courses are on the Idaho Golf Trail’s northern loop and offer stay-and-play packages, both individually and together.

California State Golf Association Formed to Benefit CA Golfers
(SAN DIEGO) - This marks the start of a new golf association in California, The California State Golf Association. The CSGA is the first alternative association available to golfers in over 80 years. Starting this September, golfers will be able to benefit from the CSGA's new outlook on golf services at a lower cost. The CSGA is committed to utilizing cutting edge technology, and promises to work with member courses to develop programs and increase member play.
While the organization and its approaches are fresh, the CSGA staff and executive team are not new to the golf industry. Executive Director Ray Tippet brings over 23 years of knowledge in golf administration to the CSGA. Tippet has worked closely with most of the golf courses in the Southern California region. As a member of the USGA Handicap Procedures Committee and the USGA Handicap Committee, Tippet also has experience with handicapping services on a national level. Tippet states, "We understand that in today's current economic climate many are concerned with minimizing expenses. The CSGA has implemented a business model that allows us to provide top-notch service and quality local support for our members at an affordable cost."
In 2010, other golf associations will be mandated without option to switch to a different system for handicap computation services. Recognizing that many clubs have become accustomed to the handicapping system currently in place, CSGA has retained the services of Integrated Data Company, who has provided handicapping services to all clubs in Southern California for over 40 years. The IDC system allows golfers to post scores, receive index revision emails, view the Golfer's statistical package, and see trends calculated on the web. The CSGA has also hired Lori Atchley of IDC Help Desk in order to provide local support for our clubs. Atchley is prepared to offer the same excellent service and support that Southern Californians have become accustomed to. "I have used the IDC system for over 7 years and have been very pleased with the services. As a Handicap Chair, I have all the tools necessary to preview and make necessary changes without delay. As a member, I have instant access to all that I need on the Internet. The IDC system provides super features for the 'Real Time' world we live in." Bob Rudy, Handicap Chair of the President's Club
A distinct aspect of the CSGA is the diversity among board representatives. The CSGA board consists of men and women that vary in age, ethnicity and socioeconomic backgrounds. With this wide range of perspectives, the CSGA board is able to provide a more representative voice for all golfers. "I simply wanted to be involved with an association that has years of experience and mirrors the diversity of the citizens of our great state." Marsha Lee, Board Member of the CSGA
The California State Golf Association is a non-profit organization established to provide golf clubs and individual members with a new alternative to golf administration. With over fifty years of collective experience in the industry, the CSGA executive team is proud to provide members with handicapping, tournaments and club based programs. The CSGA's philosophy is to make the golfing experience a positive one for all by putting the golfer and golf clubs first and developing core programs that operate on cutting edge technology. Product Review: Nike STORM-FIT Elite
We’ve all been there … The weatherman said “20 percent chance of rain” so you figured there’s an 80 percent chance of no rain. You don’t need to be a mathematician to figure out that equation.
With math and science on your side, you book a tee time. Sure enough, you’re three holes into your round and it starts raining. Edward Murphy – of Murphy’s law – was right.
Most golfers fail to carry an umbrella, so they either run for cover or play through the rain drops – getting soaked and heading toward a miserable feeling and corresponding horrible score. Those who carry an umbrella stay relatively dry, but hurry shots in an effort to get back under their portable cover.
If most golfers have no protection from the rain, while some have umbrellas, you can imagine the fraction of overall players with the foresight to pack a rain suit in their bag. I have been one of those players – a rare breed with an umbrella strapped to the side of my bag and a rain suit inside my bag. Yet I ALWAYS chose the umbrella over the suit. Why?
First, let’s address the annoying noise most rain suits make when moving. Petty, yes, but still enough to make me leave it in the bag.
Second, I’ve never been able to swing freely in a rain jacket. They’re too constricting if you buy one to fit and too large if you buy one that allows you to swing.
Third, they’re hot. They just don’t make them to breathe, so mid-summer rounds when days are hot are made even worse by cooking inside a cheap rain suit.
I could go on, but I’d just be piling on. Besides, if you can’t say anything nice …
Well, thanks to the folks at Nike Golf, I can finally say something nice and leave the umbrella on the bag. The new Nike STORM-FIT Elite jacket and pant are the answers to any foul-weather golfer’s prayers.
Developed through valuable insight generated from Nike Golf Tour athletes and consumers, the STORM-FIT Elite outerwear accommodates the athletic movement of the golf swing because the four-way stretch material provides extended range of motion. To reduce weight and bulk, the Nike STORM-FIT Elite features no-sew bonding technology of which Nike introduced in its apparel and rainwear in 2007. They’re waterproof, windproof and breathable.
And the look is sharp, too. You’ll want to wear the jacket on cool mornings when there’s zero chance of rain and you won’t look foolish keeping it on after the round.
The pants are much more than your standard rain pant, too. For one, they have a snap and zipper like actual pants – making them much easier to get on. Also, the pockets are two dimensional – useful as “stand-alone” pockets or easy access to the pockets in your original pants.
The STORM-FIT collection is not cheap, but worth every penny. Golfers, like any other consumers, get what they pay for and they’re paying for comfort and quality with this product. The STORM-FIT Elite products in the fall/holiday 2009 line come in Full Zip Jacket (available in black or red, MSRP $300), Half Zip Jacket (available in black or red, MSRP $260), Short Sleeve Half Zip (available in black or red, MSRP $200) and Pant (available in black, MSRP $200).
Our recommendation: Buy this product and pray for rain.

Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort Earns Golf Digest Award Ranking
(ARLINGTON, Texas) - The two Jeffrey D. Brauer-designed courses at the Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort in Biwabik, Minnesota highlight the resort's placement as one of North America's top golf resorts by Golf Digest magazine, as released in its October 2009 issue.
Only 75 resorts made the rankings and Giants Ridge was listed at No. 46, making it the highest ranked Minnesota resort on the honor roll. This marks the initial time the northeastern Minnesota golf resort has claimed such a prestigious tribute.
But this is not the first time Giants Ridge has been listed as a top resort. In 2005, Giants Ridge earned mention as a Top 5 Mountain Resort by Golf For Women magazine and in 2003 was named as one of the top six golf destinations in the world by Golf World magazine.
The backbone of the golfing experience at Giants Ridge is the two Brauer-fashioned courses at resort. The Legend, which opened in 1997, and the Quarry, which first welcomed play in 2003, have been staples of various "Best of" lists throughout their existence.
The Legend at Giants Ridge received a prestigious 4½-star golf rating five years in a row from Golf Digest, which has also named it as the top public golf course in Minnesota in 1999. The Legend was recently ranked in the latest Golf Digest list of Best Public Courses as No. 3 Public Golf Course in Minnesota and as the 72nd Best Public Course in the Nation.
The Quarry has earned even higher acclaim, and this year was named Minnesota's No. 1 public golf course as well as the nation's 20th best public track by Golf Digest and as the No. 2 public golf course in the state by Golfweek magazine. The Quarry was listed as the top golf course you can play in Minnesota by Golfweek in 2008, and has earned Golf Digest's 4½-star ranking every year since 2004.
"My work in Minnesota is among my best, with both courses at Giants Ridge in Golf Digest's Top 100," said Brauer, who is the principal of Arlington, Texas-based GolfScapes, Inc. "One critic told me that he had no idea that both courses were designed by the same golf course architect, which, I think, is the highest tribute I have received. It says I designed with what I had, as I was able to utilize the nature of The Legend course and the man-made quarry at The Quarry course to create two distinct golf experiences at one great resort."
The Golf Digest ranking of top golf resorts was created with the help of Golf Digest's 900-plus course-rating panelists, who also produce our biennial ranking of America's 100 Greatest Courses. They rated hundreds of U.S., Canadian, Mexican and Caribbean golf resorts on a scale of 1 ("awful") to 10 ("perfect"). Golf Digest averaged their ratings and multiplied the result by 10 to come up with a score for each.
"This impressive rating highlights the quality golf of The Legend and The Quarry and puts Giants Ridge on the map along with some of the nation's most outstanding golf resorts such as Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, Sandestin, and Bandon Dunes," said John Kendall, director of golf at Giants Ridge.

Product Review: Knetgolf.com
Times are tough. The economy is in the tank and people are cutting corners at every turn. Grocery stores are increasingly selling their in-house brand over name brands golfers are getting an extra season (or two) out of golf shoes. Those accustomed to playing upscale courses are looking for special rates or settling for more play on their local municipal tracks.
With all that’s wrong, it is a welcome site to see something right. Knetgolf.com (http://www.knetgolf.com/) is that oasis in a troubled (golf) world.
According to its Web site, Knetgolf.com has been the industry leader in bringing golfers of all abilities great deals on every brand and style of golf ball available since 1995. They carrying more than 2 million golf balls in inventory at all times in their 40,000-square-foot fulfillment facility and distribute from centers in the United States and Canada – making receiving orders quick and easy.
American Golfer is interested in saving its readers money, so we put the Knetgolf product to the test. For reporting purposes, we took brand new Titleist Pro V1s, fresh from the box and refurbished Pro V1s from Knetgolf and marked them each to distinguish one from the other. These unique markings were the only visible difference and our tester wasn’t told which one was which. For a larger sample size in limited time, he played two of each for 36 holes.
The scores were added – and re-added – and the results were clear. After 36 holes with both balls, our golfer could not distinguish between the two and the two Knetgolf balls actually beat their competition by two strokes.
Knetgolf1: 74-73 – 147
Knetgolf2: 73-75 – 148
New1: 75-75 – 150
New2: 75-72 – 147
While the test was unscientific and could have been skewed by a few made putts beyond 30 feet, the look and feel is the same. From shaping shots to distance off the tee, when balls were struck well, they performed identically. They are, after all, the same balls. One just happens to come straight from the factory, while the other is a little “experienced.”
The savings at Knetgolf? About half the cost of new! And golfers can choose just about any model within any brand – from Titleist and Nike to Callaway and Top Flite.
We’ve been skeptical of refurbished balls in the past. If the best ball on the market sits at the bottom of a pond for a season, we’ll take a “bargain ball” over it any day. Because of that, we recommend you don’t take the cheaper way out by buying anything but their mint offerings. The savings are amazing either way.
If you’re still not sold, Knetgolf offers this refinished disclaimer:
”Used and refinished balls are subject to performance variations from new ones. Used & refinished balls are not endorsed by the original manufacturer and the balls do not fall under the original manufacturer's warranty. However, we believe strongly in this product, and back them up with a 100 percent money back guarantee.”

Canadian Rockies is Home to the Fifth-Best Golf Resort in North America
Golf Digest Bestows Elite Distinction on The Fairmont Banff Springs via its “75 Best Golf Resorts in North America” List
(ALBERTA, Calgary) – Canadian Rockies Golf – a collection of seven courses and three resorts which comprise the popular, upscale lifestyle destination – today announces that Golf Digest magazine has named The Fairmont Banff Springs No. 5 in the magazine’s biennial rankings list “75 Best Golf Resorts in North America.”
The top-rated property in Canada according to this best-in-kind Golf Digest list, The Fairmont Banff Springs course boasts an 18-hole masterpiece designed by legendary golf course architect Stanley Thompson, as well as the fun, popular 9-hole Tunnel Course. The Thompson 18 is widely considered one of the world’s great courses and features an inspired layout which winds through forests in the Bow River Valley and around towering, granite mountain peaks. Featuring Thompson’s top-notch, Golden Era of Architecture parkland style routing and 147 bunkers, the course is home to an array of unique holes which dazzle, none more than the “Devil’s Cauldron” – a fantastic, 200-yard par-3 hole which is considered by many as perhaps the world’s finest one-shotter.
When one’s golf round has been completed, the stunning resort hotel awaits to pamper and refresh. Castle-like in appearance and architecture, first built in 1888, it is the best of both worlds – glorious grandeur from yesteryear combined with all the finest modern amenities. The Willow Stream Spa, for example, is one of only nine Fairmont brand hotels worldwide to achieve this hospitality leader’s top tier of spa offerings. In addition to scintillating views of the Sulphur and Cascade Mountains, proliferating wildlife and the scenic Bow River, and an array of room styles and price points, guests of The Fairmont Banff Springs may opt for “Fairmont Gold” – an exclusive floor featuring 72 rooms, an expansive lounge and private concierge. Resort visitors can choose from more than one-half dozen, on-site dining options including authentic Canadian, Bavarian, French inspired, Italian and other cuisines.
To determine the 75 Best Resorts in North America, Golf Digest had its 900 course rating panelists rank each destination on various criteria including golf, food, lodging and service. The results appear on www.golfdigest.com and in the October 2009 issue currently on newsstands.
The Fairmont Banff Springs is indicative of high quality courses and resorts found in the Canadian Rockies Golf lifestyle destination (www.canadianrockiesgolf.ca):
* The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge – home to another brilliant Thompson course design and resort
* Kananaskis County Golf Course – offering two acclaimed Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed, 18-hole courses

* Canmore Golf & Curling Club – a family friendly, year-round club for sports enthusiasts
* Stewart Creek Golf & Country Club – an award-winning 18-hole course by Gary Browning includes preserved mine shafts bordering some holes and adding a popular, historic aesthetic
The collective brand tagline for these resorts and courses – with a combined 135, adrenaline-inducing golf holes – describes it well: “Canadian Rockies Golf: Historic. Dramatic. Untamed.”

Callawassie Island Completes $4 Million Fazio Golf Course Renovation
(OKATIE, S.C.) - Callawassie Island residents will celebrate the eagerly awaited finale of their $4 million Tom Fazio golf course renovation with a ribbon cutting and champagne toast on the 9th green of the club's Dogwood nine at 6:30 p.m., Oct. 3. An Oktoberfest party will follow the toast and ribbon cutting.
The ceremony marks a new era in golf at Callawassie Island, where the sport shapes daily life for many of its residents.
"The economy has caused many other communities nationwide to put similar projects on hold," said Bob DeLuca, president of the Callawassie Island Club Board of Directors. "The club leadership, members, property owners and staff are proud to have completed this major renovation on time and on budget."
According to Callawassie Island Club Golf Course Superintendent Matthew Tacilauskas, the two-year renovation of all 27 holes rebuilt greens with sturdy, fast Mini Verde ultradwarf hybrid Bermuda grass, restored the courses' routing elements to Fazio's original design standards and installed a state-of-the-art irrigation system that reduces watering requirements by more than 50 percent. This system saved more than 30 million gallons of water between May 2007 and May 2008. The Dogwood nine were the last holes to be renovated and will be open for play after the celebration.
Billy Fuller, president of Billy Fuller Golf Design and a former superintendent at Augusta National, consulted with the Fazio team specifically on green design elements to accommodate the ultra high performance putting surfaces. East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta (home of the PGA Tour Championship), the Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass (home of The Players) and TPC Myrtle Beach also feature Mini Verde ultra dwarf hybrid Bermuda grass on their championship courses
"The 27 holes of Fazio golf at Callawassie Island have become more challenging with better playability because of quality of the putting surfaces and the features within the green complexes," said Fuller. "The courses offer high aesthetic and strategic values resulting in tremendous playability for all levels from higher handicapped amateurs to the professional level. It is strategically exceptional and could attract many primary state and regional tournaments."
Hilton Head Island Amateur Golf Association players who competed on the already complete portion of the renovation earlier this year "raved about the condition of the Palmetto and Magnolia courses at Callawassie Island Club, where the firm, fast greens made for difficult scoring," according to Justin Jarrett of the Hilton Head Island Packet.
"When the majority of players complete their rounds at Callawassie, most would tell you that, strategically, the challenge and reward is there all the way around," Fuller continued.
Callawassie Island's golf courses and many other amenities complement its extraordinary natural surroundings, which include 11 miles of coastline, ancient live oaks, fertile salt marshes and an abundant population of Lowcountry wildlife. Its 27 holes of Tom Fazio golf provide superb play options for every skill level. Tennis activities anchored at Callawassie's six Har-Tru courts have attracted more than 200 dedicated members for the Callawassie Island Tennis Association with special events, clinics and competitions for both casual and competitive players.
Through the efforts of Callawassie's dedicated Ecology Committee, the island was the first area in South Carolina - and one of only 15 nationwide - to achieve the National Wildlife Federation's Community Wildlife Habitat certification. Ongoing conservation efforts and programs guided by the Ecology Committee will help protect Callawassie's natural beauty for future generations while enhancing residents' knowledge and appreciation of its Lowcountry habitat.
Now home to almost 500 families, 70 percent of whom live fulltime on the island, Callawassie hosts 26 active organizations ranging from the third-largest kayak club in South Carolina to book clubs for nearly any taste. The Callawassie community not only offers some of the Lowcountry's best golf and home values, it provides a range of lifestyle options with likeminded neighbors. Callawassie's enthusiastic residents include such a fascinating variety of individuals, from nationally recognized artists to corporate executives.

Personal Golf Ball Imprinting System Released by Tin Cup Products
(FAIRFAX, Va.) - Tin Cup Products announced the release of the brand new Tin Cup Personal Imprinting System that allows the golfer to "make your mark." Tin Cup allows a golfer to create a personalized ball marker using a logo of his or her choice. Standard designs are available at www.tin-cup.com or a personalized cutout can be requested online as well.
Per the USGA Rule (12-2) that requires golfers to be able to "identify" their ball during play, the Tin Cup allows the golfer to make their mark. The Tin Cup is then placed over the golf ball and the golfer can trace the mark onto their ball with a permanent ink pen.
Company spokesman, Cabell Fooshe, said, "The unique thing about the Tin Cup is that it allows golfers to personalize their own golf ball and it also makes it very easy to identify the ball out on the golf course."

Swing in the Smokies: Pack the Clubs for Unique Golf Experience
(HAYWOOD COUNTY, N.C.) - Home to six amazing golf courses, Haywood County offers excitement from tee to green on every hole for golfers of all skill levels - all while surrounded by breathtaking views of the mountainous landscape of the Smokies.
Whether you’re looking for fun outings with family and friends or for a more serious competitive challenge, whether you’re a scratch golfer or 20-handicap with an unmatched love for the game, pack your bags - and your clubs, of course - and swing into the season in a spectacular setting.
Like the game of golf itself, there are plenty of ups and downs on these mountain courses. The setting for a round of golf is nothing short of spectacular, no matter where you might find yourself on the course. The golf courses in Maggie Valley, Waynesville, Canton, and Lake Junaluska are among the most unique in the East, with a mix of flat valley fairways, blind tee shots, major changes in elevation, and undulating greens - during the same round. Best of all, it’s affordable.
“This fall, playing golf in Waynesvilleand Haywood County will be a great value, even more so than years in the past, with better packages at better prices,” said Jeffrey Young, sales director at The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa.
“What makes Haywood County a unique destination for golf is the weather, the mountain backdrop and the people,” he added. “Golfers can enjoy great fall weather and really get to enjoy the short-range and long-range mountain views while the leaves change color.”
Now’s the time to start planning a golf trip to Haywood County for the fall season, when the mountains and valleys are transformed by the changing leaves into a cornucopia of color - perhaps the only distraction you’ll find on these peaceful courses. Visitors can choose from on-premises lodging or one of the 180-plus accommodations in Haywood County.
“The combination of natural scenic beauty and expertly designed, well-maintained courses really makes Haywood County a unique golfing destination,” said Lynn Collins, executive director of the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority. “Thanks to the mountain setting and comfortable, crisp mountain air, golfing couldn’t be more enjoyable and rewarding - a destination for golfers of all stripes.”
The golf courses include:
• Maggie Valley Club - an 18-hole, 6,500-yard, par 72 course is like two courses in one, with the flat Valley Nine serving as a "warm-up" for the Mountain Nine that features an 800-foot rise in elevation and an increased challenge. (866) 659-4725; www.maggievalleyclub.com.
• The Waynesville Inn Golf Resort & Spa - a picturesque 27-hole course that features three separate and distinct par 35, 9-hole courses that start and finish at the clubhouse. The Blue Ridge Course is the most mountainous; the Carolina Course is the flattest; the Dogwood Course is the shortest. In any combination, a round here offers everything one might expect from a Western North Carolina golf course. (800) 627-6250; www.thewaynesvilleinn.com.
• Springdale Country Club - an 18-hole, par 72 course that stretches more than 6,800 yards (from the tips), from the gradual elevation changes of the front nine toward Rocky Face Mountain, to the wide open fairways that await you on the back nine where Cold Mountain serves as a spacious backdrop. (800) 553-3027; www.springdalegolf.com.
• Laurel Ridge Country Club - fast, undulating greens, lush tree-lined fairways and spectacular panoramic views highlight this 18-hole, par 72 championship course. From the back tees, the semi-private course spans 6,904 yards and offers every challenge expected of a mountain course, yet does it with a delicate balance of fairness and playability. (800) 769-1177; www.laurelridgegolf.com.
• Lake Junaluska Golf Course - At this 18-hole, 5,034-yard course, length and distance takes a backseat to accuracy and placement. A number of blind shots, especially coming in, makes this a challenging but fun par 68 for the entire group. (828) 456-5777; www.lakejunaluska.com.
• Iron Tree Golf Course - this 9-hole, par 35 course features 2,616 yards (from the back tees) in a natural mountain setting that will “test your mental game and keep you entertained!” (828) 627-1933.
Ideally located in the middle of the Southeast, only hours from Atlanta and Charlotte, Haywood County offers golf enthusiasts a complete experience, whether they’re looking for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation.
“They can golf in the morning, hike in the afternoon, and have an array of dining and shopping at their fingertips,” Young said. “Or they can kick back on their balconies for some much-needed relaxation.”
Haywood County, North Carolina, “Where the Sun Rises on the Smokies,” is 554 scenic square miles of spectacular country, with beautiful mountains and valleys dotting the landscape. More than a dozen of its mountain peaks soar to elevations of at least 6,000 feet (more than any east of the Mississippi River), and the county is one of the highest, with a mean elevation of 3,600 feet, east of the Rockies. One of its most notable mountain peaks is Cold Mountain - the basis for the award-winning, best-selling novel by Charles Frazier and the ensuing 2003 major motion picture - at 6,030 feet. The county sits at the western edge of the state, with the Blue Ridge Parkway running along its southwestern border. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Pisgah National Forest are located in the northern section of the county. For more information about golfing in Haywood County and details about accommodations, restaurants and other attractions, call 800-334-9036 or visit www.smokeymountains.net.

Nike Unveils Latest in All Weather Protection Jackets
(BEAVERTON, Ore.) - Nike Golf has introduced new outerwear that is at the pinnacle of protecting golfers from extreme weather conditions.
The new Nike STORM-FIT Elite jacket and pant was developed through valuable insight generated from Nike Golf Tour athletes and consumers. As a result of extensive research and testing by the Nike Golf Research and Development team, the Nike STORM-FIT Elite outerwear features breathable laminate technology that completely protects the body from wind and rain.
One of the most important characteristics of the STORM-FIT Elite outerwear in accommodating the athletic movement of the golf swing is the four-way stretch material that provides extended range of motion. To reduce weight and bulk, the Nike STORM-FIT Elite features no-sew bonding technology of which Nike introduced in its apparel and rainwear in 2007. The no-sew technology reduces weight and bulk. A modern silhouette provides the golfer with a sleek look.
Offered in a full zip and a half zip as well as a short sleeved version, the Nike STORM-FIT Elite is seam-sealed making it waterproof, windproof and breathable. The new Nike outerwear also includes laser cut technology, which is located on the chest where it houses a zipper garage, and on the cuff of the sleeve. The cuffs on the sleeves highlight three sections of laser cuff Velcro, which provides comfortable range of motion and flexibility during the golf swing. While the laser cut technology serves as an important function, Nike Golf designers were able to create it as a subtle design enhancement.
STORM-FIT Elite Products in the fall/holiday 2009 line:
* Storm-FIT Elite Full Zip Jacket (available in black or red) MSRP $300
* Storm-FIT Elite Half Zip Jacket (available in black or red) MSRP $260
* Storm Fit Elite Short Sleeve Half Zip (available in black or red) MSRP $200
* Storm-FIT Elite Pant (available in black) MSRP $200

Golf Digest Recognizes Schmidt-Curley's Ross Course Renovation at French Lick Resort
(SCOTTSDALE, AZ) - Schmidt-Curley Design - the full-service golf-course architecture, master-planning and construction-management solution - announces its renovation of the Donald Ross Course at French Lick Resort was recognized in the October issue of Golf Digest.
French Lick Resort, located in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, was named one of North America's Top 75 Resorts after undergoing an extensive, $500 million dollar expansion and facelift. This was Golf Digest's first "Top Resort" ranking since 2006. More than 900 members of the magazine's Course Ranking Panel submitted ballots rating 400-plus resorts in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Schmidt-Curley spearheaded a multi-million dollar restoration of the Donald Ross Course, formerly known as the Hill Course at French Lick Springs C.C. Site of Walter Hagen's 1924 PGA Championship victory and known for its wildly undulating greens, the course is considered an iconic Ross design by many architecture aficionados.
After examining archived photos and blueprints of the course, Schmidt-Curley reclaimed 35 original bunkers and returned greens to their original square or rectangular shapes. It also tiled all bunkers, added new sand, installed a state-of-the-art irrigation system, made cart paths less conspicuous and returned the course to a Par 70. The project was completed in 2007.
"It's gratifying to know our meticulous work at French Lick has been so well received," says Indiana-native Lee Schmidt. "We took great pains to retain Ross' signature hallmarks, while adapting the course for today's modern game. We're extremely pleased with how the job turned out."

Now Three GolfStretcher Models
Fitness and flexibility are two of the most important factors to playing good golf. Most golfers spend little to no time warming up on the range before their round. A few minutes spent on the putting green does not help the whole body warm up. So is there a product on the market that can warm up the arms, shoulders, and back muscles in five minutes so golfers can hit long and straight right out of the gates? Yes.
The GolfStretcher is a revolutionary stretching device that is being tested by over 150 PGA Tour players and has been effectively warming up golfers of all ages for years. It is designed to be used for only minutes a day to increase flexibility in the shoulder turn - creating more distance off the tee. Many golfers believe the easiest way to add yards to their drives is by buying expensive golf equipment. While name brand drivers might guarantee more forgiveness, "buying distance" is simply impossible. Hitting the ball farther involves solid contact and a quick swing speed. Contact comes with consistency and swing speed comes from flexibility - something that nearly every golfer wishes he or she had more of. The GolfStretcher will increase the range of motion in the shoulders, arms, and back muscles to create a long and smooth backswing that will lead to increased club head speed and longer drives.
The flexibility exercises the GolfStretcher offers are designed to create muscle memory and promote a more consistent swing that can be repeated through the entire round. Most golfers would admit to feeling as though they swing differently on every shot. That is because they haven't correctly grooved their swings. Just minutes a day with the GolfStretcher will change that commonality felt by most golfers: inconsistency.
Recently, the GolfStretcher Team has introduced the "3 Product Family" to provide a customized GolfStretcher option for everyone. The "Original", "Pro", and "Tour" editions will now fit every size, stature, and level of flexibility as well as offer a wide price range to fit every budget.
1.) GolfStretcher "Original" - features rotating handles and is 36 inches long…it is far more effective than any golf club and will fit in many golf bags. $29.99
2.) GolfStretcher "Pro" - features rotating handles, a rotating shaft, and is adjustable in length from 24 to 36 inches. Since it collapses to 24 inches it will fit in most golf bags. The rotating shaft provides a more extensive stretching opportunity than the "Original" edition. $59.99
3.) GolfStretcher "Tour" - features rotating handles, a rotating shaft, and is adjustable from 24 to 45 inches. This extra width accommodates larger individuals, those less flexible, or those who desire to work their maximum range of motion. (Price includes a complementary GolfGrasp) $89.99
All editions are recommended by Golf Fitness Magazine and offer online video instructions at www.GolfStretcher.com.

Longaberger Golf Club Ranks No. 19 as Golf Digest Announces ‘America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses Re-Ranked by Price’
(NASHPORT, Ohio) – As Golf Digest magazine re-ranks its most recent America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses biennial list (2009-10) – factoring in green fee prices at each member of the esteemed list – Longaberger Golf Club comes in at an impressive No. 19.
The result of this re-ranking, in essence, determines the nation’s best-value options at the Top 100 courses (August 2009 issue), including legendary designs such as Pinehurst No. 2, TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach. With a peak rate of $99 with cart and access to the club’s 25-acre practice facility, Longaberger Golf Club provides a premium golf experience at a fraction of the cost of other Top 100 tracks.
“Value and options are critical to golfers and this distinction from Golf Digest for Longaberger Golf Club demonstrates it is at the forefront,” says Joseph Livingood, senior vice president of Billy Casper Golf, which manages Longaberger Golf Club. “This is a public-access course with a private-club feel, and saving money is an added bonus.”
In addition to Golf Digest, Longaberger Golf Club has been honored by GolfWorld, Golfweek and GOLF Magazine as one of the best courses in the country. The Arthur Hills design winds through the rolling hills of central Ohio and panoramic sightlines highlight the immaculate playing conditions. With five sets of tees, the 7,243-yard layout challenges the lowest handicapper, while shrinking to manageable distance to accommodate each and every skill level.
In its 10th season of play, the club – which is at the center of a vibrant, greater-Columbus area golf destination – offers value-laden stay-and-play packages that make extended trips and weekend getaways extremely affordable. Golfers can stay at Longaberger’s hotel (The Place Off The Square) and play Longaberger Golf Club for substantially reduced rates.
For more information about Longaberger Golf Club, or to reserve a tee time, visit www.longabergergolfclub.com or call 740.763.1100.
