Gamble Sands’ Quicksands Course Readies for 2021 Debut

(Brewster, Wash.)
– Gamble Sands’ David McLay Kidd-designed Quicksands Course continues its grow-in as crews prepare the 14-hole short course for its Spring 2021 debut.

With holes varying wildly from 60 to 180 yard and descriptively-named Plinko, Crater, Donut and Corkscrew, Quicksands will be a fun and challenging layout requiring imaginative and well-played shots. To further elevate the fun, Quicksands will feature a course-wide sound system and a unique design that encourages group-to-group and cross-hole banter.

“Short courses are popping up everywhere from Pebble Beach to Pinehurst, we wanted Gamble Sands guests to share in the fun,” said McLay Kidd. “Instead of making a small version of a full course, we decided to make a real big version of a putting course with wild shapes, semi-blind shots, a seamless grassed area. We wanted to elicit whoops and hollers from everyone that plays.”

Crews broke ground on Quicksands in late winter 2020, with grassing taking place in June. McLay Kidd and partner, Nick Schaan, were hands-on in the creation of Quicksands, working with the crew, running equipment and shaping with hand tools. Quicksands is laid out to the east of the Gamble Sands clubhouse, between the range and the entry road, on a 25-acre parcel of heaving and rolling sand dunes of which the team took full advantage.

Tory Wulf, project manager at Gamble Sands, adds: “Everyone here just can’t wait to get people out there and see and hear the reactions to the course. DMK design has done it once again with their attention to detail and creativity.  Their passion to be innovative with this small piece of ground will be truly fun to watch over the years to come.”

Gamble Sands, a “Top 100 Golf Resort” located in Brewster, Washington, will close for the 2020 golf season at the end of October and will reopen for resort and daily-fee play in April 2021.

McLay Kidd’s award-winning course designs include Gamble Sands, Bandon Dunes and Mammoth Dunes.

Quicksands adds to an impressive collection of golf and hospitality amenities at Gamble Sands. The 18-hole Sands Course opened for play in 2014 to widespread acclaim, with the 100,000 square foot Cascades putting course following shortly thereafter. The Inn at Gamble Sands features oversized rooms that perfectly match the wide-open nature of Gamble Sands as big rooms open to the big golf course, framed by even bigger views that sweep across the Columbia River Valley. The Danny Boy Bar and Grill is a gathering place for golfers and casual diners alike. Large garage-style doors roll open to outdoor dining and more views of the Cascades and Columbia River Valley.
