OMEGA Celebrates Storied Tradition as 2016 Ryder Cup Comes to a Close

(CHASKA, Minn.) – The 41st Ryder Cup came to a close this afternoon at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. as the U.S. Ryder Cup Team hoisted the coveted Ryder Cup Trophy for the 26th time.

An electric Friday morning saw the American team jump out to an early 4-0 lead but the Europeans slowly creeped back into contention throughout the afternoon. The European team briefly pulled even with the United States on Day 2 before the Americans rebounded to go up 9.5 -6.5 entering Sunday’s final round.

The United States won its first Ryder Cup since 2008 with a final tally of 17-11. The win was sealed when American Ryan Moore defeated Lee Westwood one-up on the last hole, finishing at eagle-birdie-par for the win. It’s the largest margin of victory since the positions were reversed in 2006 and only the third time the Americans have won the Ryder Cup in the past two decades.

Earlier in the week, OMEGA, the Official Timekeeper of the Ryder Cup, partnered with 28-time Olympic Medalist and OMEGA Ambassador, Michael Phelps, to present each member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team with their very own OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra “Ryder Cup” limited-edition timepiece.

Throughout the tournament, thousands of guests discovered OMEGA’s unique timepieces and rich brand history at the specially-themed fan experience “PLANET OMEGA”. The PLANET OMEGA exhibition covered OMEGA’s Watchmaking, Sporting Spirit, Sea Exploration, Ladies’ Watches, Space Travel, James Bond and Social Causes. Each section contained a collection of OMEGA’s most notable timepieces, while also detailing the stories behind them.

Fans at home were also able to experience Planet OMEGA and the Ryder Cup for themselves, by following Michael Phelps as he commandeered the OMEGA Instagram page @omega to share his experiences at the exhibition and throughout the Celebrity Matches.

As Official Timekeeper and proud Patron Partner of The PGA of America, OMEGA now looks ahead to the 2017 PGA Championship, set to be played Aug. 7-13, 2017 at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, N.C.
