Value-Laden Summer Golf Deals Available in Los Cabos

Cabo’s finest clubs offer discounted green fees and twilight rates

(LOS CABOS, Mexico) –  Golfers who visit Los Cabos this summer can expect well-conditioned courses, plenty of availability, a friendly Cabo welcome—and deeply discounted green fees. Summer is family vacation time, but it’s also the season that invites golfers to take a swing at bargain rates on a bevy of world-class venues.

For example, at Palmilla Golf Club, recently treated to a $3.5 million renovation, “dynamic pricing” enables players to take advantage of adjusted rates based on demand, availability and other factors. The club offers discounted rates starting at $105 for an 18-hole round at Palmilla, the “Grande Dame” of Los Cabos golf and the first Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course built in Latin America. For an ultra-luxe vacation, the 27-hole facility’s golf packages feature accommodations at One&Only Palmilla, a world-class property ranked in the top 1% by TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards.

At Cabo del Sol, the outstanding 36-hole complex with superb designs by Jack Nicklaus (Ocean Course) and Tom Weiskopf (Desert Course), segmented pricing through Sept. 30 entices golfers with the best values of the year. For instance, from 12:30 to 3:20 p.m., green fees on the Ocean and Desert layouts are priced at $150 and $100, respectively. Rates drop to $115 and $75, respectively, after 3:30 p.m. Discounted replay rates are available at Cabo del Sol, as are attractively-priced golf packages in conjunction with the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos Hacienda del Mar.

At Quivira Golf Club (pictured above), its Jack Nicklaus-designed course marked by sheer granite cliffs, huge windswept dunes and rolling desert foothills, players are privy to summer rates in two time slots through Sept. 30. Quivira’s mid-morning rate to play a world-class layout with more oceanfront exposure than any other course in Los Cabos is $267 (11 a.m. to 1:24 p.m.). The twilight fee, available from 1:36 to 3:00 p.m., is $227. Rates include food and refreshments at the club’s four comfort stations. ‘Stay & Play Packages’ at Pueblo Bonito resort properties are available.

All three Questro Golf courses in Los Cabos offer significant seasonal discounts through Oct. 31. Puerto Los Cabos, situated on the outskirts of San Jose del Cabo, boasts a unique composite layout with nine-hole designs by Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus. (A third nine by Nicklaus is under construction and will open next year). The 18-hole green fee at Puerto Los Cabos is $195. The twilight rate (after 1:30 p.m.) is $135. In addition, dynamic pricing at Puerto Los Cabos brings low season rates down to $115 based on availability. Complimentary refreshments are served at a pair of on-course palapas.

At Cabo Real, centerpiece of a resort development with 3.2 miles of beachfront, an 18-hole green fee of $180 and a twilight rate of $125 after 1:30 p.m. are promoted on the club’s Robert Trent Jones II-designed layout, a superb layout that climbs from the beachfront into steep desert foothills high above the Sea of Cortes.

Questro Golf’s Club Campestre, located five minutes from downtown San Jose del Cabo and a local favorite, is a Nicklaus Design course chiseled into sloping desert terrain that offers excellent value. In addition to an 18-hole green fee of $140 and a twilight rate of $100 that starts at 11 a.m. Campestre also has a dynamic pricing structure that reduces green fees on selected dates to $75, arguably the best bang for the buck in Los Cabos.

Among other amenities, green fees at all Los Cabos facilities include shared golf cart, use of practice facility and bottled water.

Former Olympian, NBA Coach Doug Collins to Join Feherty Monday at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel

Collins Reflects on a Career in Basketball, & Being on the Wrong End of the Controversial ‘72 Munich Olympics Gold Medal Game

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – A former Olympian, first overall pick in the draft, and a journeyman head coach in the NBA, current TV analyst Doug Collins joins Feherty to reflect on a life and career in basketball, Monday, August 1 at 9 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. Feherty – the Emmy-nominated Sports TV personality – meanwhile is set to return to late night television this evening, where he’ll be a guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” on NBC at 11:30 p.m. ET. Feherty will join other guests appearing tonight, actor Matt Damon and musical guest Sturgill Simpson.

Among topics discussed over the course of the interview, Collins recounts having been on the losing end of the controversial 1972 Munich Summer Olympics gold medal game between the United States and the Soviet Union. Collins made two free throws in the final minute of the game to give the United States a one point lead. When officials botched the game clock in the closing seconds to give the Soviets two chances to take the lead, they converted a layup attempt that resulted in a one point win and the first-ever Olympic loss for the United States basketball team.

In speaking with Feherty, Collins reflects on the decision that he and his teammates made at the time to refuse to accept their silver medals in protest of the game’s contentious outcome. Other topics discussed include:
- His head coaching roles with the Chicago Bulls (1986-’89), Detroit Pistons (1995-’98); Washington Wizards (2001-’03) and Philadelphia 76ers (2010-’13)
- Reflecting on his years coaching the biggest icon in the sport’s history – Michael Jordan – as head coach of the Chicago Bulls
- Recollections of learning he had been drafted first overall to the 76ers in 1973, and how the draft has evolved in the decades since
- The influence of Illinois State head basketball coach Will Robinson on both Collins’ playing and coaching career
- Admiration for the young crop of PGA TOUR stars
- His injury-shortened playing career and stepping away from his playing days years before he had hoped to

Upcoming Guests this Season
Episode guests on Feherty scheduled for later this year include 26-time Emmy Award-winning NBC Sports personality and Olympic host Bob Costas; Pro Football Hall-of-Famers Terry Bradshaw, Cris Carter and Emmitt Smith; legendary baseball play-by-play voice Bob Uecker; and 2014 European-winning Ryder Cup team captain Paul McGinley.

'Countdown to Rio' to Premiere July 31 at 9 p.m. ET

Countdown to Rio Follows Seven-Year Journey of Golf’s Return to the Olympics from: Golf Being Voted Back in as Olympic Sport in 2009; Initial Course Architect Pitches; & Building of the Course Venue

(ORLANDO, Fla.) – After the most recent major champions in the 2016 professional golf season are crowned this Sunday at the PGA Championship and RICOH Women’s British Open, the golf industry will turn its attention to the sport’s return to the Olympics for the first time in 112 years, with Golf Channel providing coverage from the first tee shot to the final putt of both the men’s and women’s competitions. Golf Channel will kick off its more than 300 total hours of Olympic-themed programming with Countdown to Rio, premiering this Sunday, July 31 at 9 p.m. ET, immediately following Golf Central Live From the PGA Championship.Seven years in the making, filming for Countdown to Rio dates back to when the IOC officially voted golf back in as an Olympic sport in October 2009, and closely follows the events that unfolded in the subsequent years, including:
October 2009 – Vote Returns Golf as an Olympic Sport for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Countdown to Rio chronicles the steps taken leading up to golf’s return to the Olympics, including the 18-month process of the International Golf Federation (IGF) making presentations to the IOC. Much of the focus centers around the potential for golf in the Olympics to act as a major catalyst in development of the game around the world.

January 2012 – Legends, Golf Architects Pitch to Design Olympic Golf Venue
With Golf Channel’s exclusive, inside access as the only cameras present in the room, Countdown to Rio reveals never previously seen footage of the architect’s presentations from the eight finalists who pitched to design the Olympic golf venue in Rio. The eight finalist groups feature some of the game’s biggest legends and golf architects, among them: Jack Nicklaus/Annika Sorenstam, Greg Norman/Lorena Ochoa, Gary Player, Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Doak, and Gil Hanse/Amy Alcott. Cameras capture the moment in which Gil Hanse learns his team had been chosen to construct the course.

“You sort of start to handicap [your chances] from a design standpoint. ‘Could we hold our own with these eight groups?’ And I felt like we could. Then you start to think politically. ‘Are we as connected? Do we have as big of a presence?’ No. So then it becomes, ‘We really need to work our butts off to design something good.’” – Gil Hanse

“The gold medal is going to be the biggest prize in golf” – Jack Nicklaus

“As you look out to 2020, 2024 and 2028… And let’s just assume golf is in there. This Rio design job is going to carry that torch.” – Greg Norman

“The Olympic Games, that’s the ultimate” – Gary Player

Spring 2012 – Following Hanse and His Initial Work in Rio
Countdown to Rio follows Gil Hanse in the subsequent months after he was initially awarded the job to construct the Olympic Golf Course. Cameras follow Hanse from the early days of the construction process, where bulldozers are used to clear the land and route the holes, and ultimately begin to shape the land into a golf course setup suited for competition.

September 2013 – “Check-in” Survey Evaluating Progress of Olympic Golf Venue
Representatives from the IGF and Rio Organizing Committee meet with Hanse to survey the progress, and areas still needed to address on the course project.

March 2016 – Olympic Test Event Staged at Newly Designed Golf Venue
In an effort to gauge the readiness of the newly constructed course setup for Olympic competition, a dedicated test event was held earlier this year to ensure the playability of the venue. Cameras were on-site to chronicle the competition and capture the reactions from those in the field after having played the new layout.

Hanse Offers Exclusive Tour of the Olympic Golf Course for Golf Channel Digital
Following the completion of the golf course design process, Gil Hanse welcomed Golf Channel cameras for an exclusive tour of the golf course. Hanse shares insight on the course’s front and back nines, and explains what went into constructing an ideal venue fit for a global Olympic test for both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Frank Nobilo’s Tee-to-Greens Prepare Viewers for New Venue
Golf Channel analyst Frank Nobilo spent time in Rio filming his signature Tee-to-Greens segments on the Olympic Golf Course. Nobilo details which holes will likely prove pivotal as players compete for their chance to win an Olympic medal.

Beyond the Valley: Rory McElroy

McIlroy reveals how home and country inspire his play

(ESSAY) - I'm a bit of a home bird; I'm very proud of where I'm from — there's a sense of belonging. Northern Ireland is a little bit like a village in that way. It's obviously a country with nearly two million people, but at the same time it feels like anywhere I go I'll run into someone I've met along the way, and no one lets me get above my station. People are very proud of me, but they'll never let me forget where I’m from. There’s a “if you work hard, you'll succeed" mentality so people are genuinely happy for you when you succeed. But there is also a bit of a "work hard, play hard" mentality.

Sometimes I feel like I live two different lives. I live this life that you see in front of cameras, playing golf and being the Rory that millions of people see across the world, but the Rory that I'm probably most comfortable being is Rory amongst his friends, amongst his family, back home. How I've been raised has kept me very grounded.

When I was growing up, my dad worked at a sports club and on Saturdays I would go there with him. At the end of the club, there was a bar top with a little hole in it, a little hole about six-inches wide. I’d bring my wedge and I’d try to chip balls into that hole from maybe 20 yards away. I had a lot of Saturdays like that, which were good fun — and at the same time, I learned how to pack a bar and pull a pint. You get to this state where you're very nostalgic about certain aspects of your life and what's important to you.

Anytime I practice back home, these memories start coming back from my childhood of hitting balls on that practice ground when it was freezing outside, rain coming sideways. We don't have to play in those conditions anymore, but when I was a kid I had no choice. This is where I grew up and those were the elements that I had to deal with.

I remember, when I was about four or five years of age, being at my home golf club, Holywood Golf Club, where the 13th hole is called "the Valley" because you have to drive over a valley to get to the fairway. My dad would always make me tee off from the near side of the valley, because at that point I couldn't clear it, but one day he let me tee off the ladies' tees, which were just at the edge of the far side of the valley.

And I cleared it for the first time. It might have been maybe 70 or 80 yards, but I cleared the valley and I was obviously very proud of myself. That's one of my earliest memories of playing golf — all of my early memories of playing are with my dad, long summer nights chipping around the greens on the back nine. These memories rekindle a love for the game. Sometimes when you get to a certain level and it becomes more than the game, it wears on you, but coming back home and remembering all those moments makes me realize why I play.

Mission Inn Centennial Golfers Getaway Package Celebrates El Campéon's 100th Anniversary

(Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.) – With more than 1,200 courses, Florida is the country’s king of golf. It had to start somewhere, and one of the Sunshine State’s grandest courses will celebrate its 100th birthday in 2017, with visiting golfers invited to join the festivities.

The history-rich El Campéon golf course at Mission Inn Resort and Club, just 35 minutes from Orlando in central Florida, has played host to many notable players and tournaments since 1917. To add to this great history, the resort’s “100th Anniversary Golfers Getaway Package” will allow visitors to experience this significant milestone and play this very special piece of Americana.
Beginning October 1and valid through January 15, 2017, the 100th Anniversary golf package (two-night minimum stay) includes:
- Deluxe guest accommodations
- Daily golf with shared cart
- Unlimited use of all practice facilities
- Sumptuous buffet breakfast daily at La Hacienda restaurant
- A four-course wine dinner for two on arrival night at El Conquistador lakeside restaurant
- Commemorative 100th anniversary merchandise gift set
- On-site anniversary savings coupons for merchandise, spa and more

Kicking off this historic period, Mission Inn is offering this commemorative golf getaway package with all the inclusions above at $194.50 per person, based on double occupancy. This is a savings of 35% off the 2017 published price.  Resort fee and taxes are extra. Third and fourth nights are available for $155 per person, per night with this package.

The 1917 course, originally known as the Floridian, was one of the first in the state to feature grass greens rather than the oiled-sand greens common a century ago. It was one of only two courses in the state built to what was then considered the “regulation” length of 6,300 yards.

Designed by George O’Neil, a golf professional and noted architect from the Chicago Golf Club, El Campéon quickly became a hot spot for vacationers and top golfers. Among its early guests were Ben Hogan, Patty Berg, Babe Zaharias, Arnold Palmer and trick-shot artist Joe Kirkwood.

Christened “El Campéon”—The Champion—by the Beucher family who bought the resort in 1964, the course has been modernized to current playing standards while still showcasing the area’s natural beauty. Unique to central Florida are the 85 ft. elevation changes on six holes of former rolling citrus groves and hardwood forests. El Campéon exceeds most players’ expectations having been rated # 2 nationally in the most recent GolfAdvisor.com player surveys. It is a true example of historic class and current quality.

Mission Inn, a Spanish-colonial-inspired resort, is set amid orange groves in central Florida’s rolling hills about 35 minutes from Orlando. Surrounded by lakes, the picturesque destination features four on-site restaurants, abundant event space, picturesque courtyards and patios, two championship golf courses, tennis academy, Spa Marbella, lakefront marina, and nature trails.

Cleveland Golf Introduces New RTX-3 Wedges

(HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA) – CLEVELAND GOLF, focused on "Where Scoring Matters" and a global leader in wedge innovation since 1979, introduced new RTX-3 wedges. This is the latest line of advanced, high-performance wedges from Cleveland, a brand which has sold more than 10 million wedges globally and garnered more than 350 Tour victories since 1988. RTX-3 wedges, available in a Blade (three finishes), Cavity Back, and Women’s Cavity Back model to suit a wide range of golfers, feature three key technologies proven to help you get closer to the hole than any wedge Cleveland Golf has ever made.

· NEW Feel Balancing Technology. This patent-pending technology shifts the center of gravity closer to the center of the wedge face – the impact zone – to decrease vibration and maximize head stability at impact. By adding a microcavity inside the hosel and shortening the hosel, nine grams of mass are optimally redistributed in the head for a more centered CG location. This improves feel and tightens shot dispersion, giving you maximum control.

· NEW V Sole Grinds (above). Three tour-proven grinds feature a V shape with more leading edge bounce to help get the club head through the turf faster at impact. This promotes crisper feel and more consistent head speed for increased spin and control. The V-LG (•) is Cleveland’s narrowest low bounce sole for maximum versatility, the V-MG (••) has mid bounce suitable for a wide range of players and turf conditions, and the V-FG (•••) is a forgiving full sole design with trailing edge relief.

· NEW Rotex Face. Three innovations combine to maximize spin with more consistency. New Tour Zip Grooves have a deeper, narrower U shape with a sharp edge radius in all lofts to enhance contact across a wide variety of conditions. The advanced, 2-pass micro milling pattern increases friction and is directionally enhanced by loft: low lofts (46°- 52°) have a straighter pattern to accommodate full shots and high lofts (54°- 64°) have a more angled pattern to optimize open-face shots. Laser Milling precisely roughens the face surface to the conforming limit.

Cleveland Golf is globally recognized for industry-leading research & development put into every wedge. The extensive testing for RTX-3 compared to both the previous-generation 588 RTX 2.0, our older wedge models and select leading competitors proves that it has the tightest dispersion. It is more accurate than any wedge Cleveland Golf has ever tested*, showing the impressive performance gains when combining new Feel Balancing Technology, the new V Sole Grinds and the Rotex Face:

“After spending more than two years developing these wedges, Cleveland Golf is very proud with the finished product,” said John Rae, Vice President of Research & Development for Srixon / Cleveland Golf / XXIO. “Our testing proves the three key technologies in RTX-3 can help golfers get the ball closer to the hole, a tremendous benefit for any player that supports Cleveland Golf’s unmatched commitment to the short game.”

Scott Carlyle, Sr. Vice President – Global Marketing, added: “I’m privileged to have been involved in developing Cleveland Golf wedges for most of the past decade, and the RTX-3 represents some of the biggest steps we have taken in what we consider our three key wedge factors: shape, feel and spin performance.”

The RTX-3 Blade, Cavity Back and Women’s Cavity Back are all available in the Tour Satin finish. For the Blade, two additional finishes have been developed with significant enhancements:
· Black Satin. This new finish has been enhanced through a proprietary process that not only gives it a sleek look, but makes it ultra-durable and longer lasting than previous black finishes.
· Tour Raw. Back by popular demand, this new finish rusts over time for a distinctive look. The Tour Raw models available to consumers are the same models in the bags of Cleveland Golf tour staffers.

The Cleveland Golf RTX-3 wedge line, which launches Friday, September 16, is available in lofts from 46° to 64° in both right-handed and left-handed options. There are key differences between the three models:
· RTX-3 Blade. The Blade provides the most versatility and is ideal for maximizing all-around wedge performance. Available in three different grinds – V-LG (•), V-MG (••) and V-FG (•••) – in three different finishes: Tour Satin, ultra-durable Black Satin, and Tour Raw. The standard shaft is True Temper Dynamic Gold steel (wedge flex) and the standard grip is the Cleveland Blue Cap by Lamkin. Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) is $129.99 each.
· RTX-3 Cavity Back. The Cavity Back has a slightly larger shape that promotes confidence and increases forgiveness. Available in Tour Satin in three different grinds – V-LG (•), V-MG (••) and V-FG (•••). The standard steel shaft is True Temper Dynamic Gold (wedge flex); the Rotex Precision Graphite shaft (wedge flex) is also available. The standard grip is the Cleveland Blue Cap by Lamkin. MAP with steel shaft is $129.99 each, while each wedge with the graphite shaft is $139.99 MAP.

TaylorMade Golf Company Unveils M1 Special Edition Driver

Limited Offering Designed with Inspiration from Summer’s Marquee Global Events

(CARLSBAD, Calif.) – Following the resounding success of the company’s “unmetalwoods” franchise launched in late 2015, TaylorMade Golf, makers of the No. 1 driver in golf, announced the impending release of a red, white and blue M1 Special Edition driver, designed incorporating custom components to celebrate Dustin Johnson’s victory in the season’s second major championship and inspired by two of the sport’s most celebrated events throughout the remainder of the summer.

Since its global launch in September of 2015, the M1 Driver has captured 24 worldwide wins*, with 13 of those coming on the on PGA TOUR, including a recent remarkable stretch of seven wins in eight tournaments by six different TaylorMade Tour staff players.

Similar to the original M1 driver, the M1 Special Edition features the use of a seven-layer carbon composite crown that resulted in a significant decrease in the crown’s weight and allowed engineers to lower the CG and add a revolutionary T-Track system that houses 25g of adjustable weight; the entire system has been placed low on the sole so regardless of moveable weight positions, the club still maintains a low center of gravity to deliver optimal trajectory.

Aesthetically, the M1 Special Edition features the same white forward section, while the carbon composite crown has been tinted a translucent dark blue color. Additionally, the driver incorporates a red T-bug logo alignment aid, red & blue T-Track weights, white PVD face & sole and a custom red aluminum sleeve in addition to an American flag on the driver’s toe. The 12 position loft sleeve provides up to four degrees of loft adjustment, the T-Track can be set for more/less draw/fade and higher/lower trajectory.

TaylorMade worked exclusively with shaft manufacturer Fujikura Composites on a custom Speeder 661 Tour Spec Special Edition shaft created specifically for the Special Edition M1. Limited in production, the M1 Special Edition includes the Golf Pride Z Grip Patriot Grip.

Along with the custom Fujikura shaft, the M1 Special Edition driver is housed in a premium full leather headcover, the same used by TaylorMade’s Tour staffers at the season’s second major championship.

“The M1 Special Edition Driver gives performance a new look,” said Brian Bazzel, Senior Director, Product Creation. “A stunning, American-inspired clubhead pairs perfectly with a special Golf Pride grip and Fujikura shaft to give golfers the ultimate in personalized performance in a can’t-miss red, white, and blue colorway.”

Min Woo Lee Makes History With 2-and-1 Victory over Noah Goodwin in U.S. Junior Amateur Final

(Ooltewah, Tenn.) - It was the longest 47-minute wait to hit a 3½-foot championship-clinching putt in Min Woo Lee’s young golf career. And when the second of two weather suspensions in Saturday’s 36-hole final match in the 69th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship ended, the 17-year-old from Perth, Australia, calmly holed the putt to make USGA history.

Lee made a late rally in sultry conditions at The Honors Course to defeat Noah Goodwin, 16, of Corinth, Texas, 2 and 1, and with it added a second USGA trophy to the Lee family mantle. Four years ago, Lee’s older sister, Minjee, a two-time LPGA Tour winner and one of two Australian representatives for next month’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, claimed the U.S. Girls’ Junior title, making them the only brother-sister tandem to win USGA Junior championships.

Hank (1998) and Kelli Kuehne (1995 and 1996) won U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Amateur titles, respectively, and there have also been one sister-sister and five brother-brother combinations to have won championships, including Hank and Trip Kuehne (2007 U.S. Mid-Amateur).

“I think we made history, so that’s pretty cool,” said Minjee via Facetime from the LPGA Tour’s UL International Crown outside of Chicago, where she is competing this weekend at The Merit Club for Australia. “I just told him at the beginning of the day to just have fun. I’m glad that he came out winning, and it’s great for both of us.”

Added Min Woo Lee: “It feels great. I'm down in history on the USGA Junior trophy, so it feels really good. It's probably the best I've ever felt. It's a dream come true for me. I've always wanted to win this tournament. I was in good form coming into it. I knew I had a good chance. It feels great to win and be on the trophy with names such as Tiger [Woods].”

The championship began with 36 holes of stroke play on Monday and Tuesday, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play. The two finalists had to win five 18-hole matches to advance to the championship match.

Lee, No. 131 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, also became the fourth international champion of the U.S. Junior Amateur, but the previous three – Terry Noe (1994), Sihwan Kim (2004) and Andy Hyeon Bo Shim (2012) – were all from the Republic of Korea. Australian Aaron Baddeley lost in the 1998 championship match to James Oh at Conway Farms in suburban Chicago, 1 down.

Lee became the first male Australian in 10 years to win a USGA title, the last being Geoff Ogilvy in the 2006 U.S. Open. Other notable Australian USGA champions include Nick Flanagan (2003 U.S. Amateur), Karrie Webb (2000 and 2001 U.S. Women’s Open), David Graham (1981 U.S. Open) and Jan Stephenson (1983 U.S. Women’s Open).

Goodwin, No. 35 in the WAGR, was bidding to become the seventh different Texan to win the Junior Amateur since Hunter Mahan’s triumph in 1999.

“I couldn't have lost to a better player,” said Goodwin. “He pushed me and challenged me every single shot today. I played my butt off today. I played great. I got beat by a better player. In the end, that's what it's all about. This tournament is just about finding the best player this week.”

The match on the par-72, 7,326-yard Pete Dye layout saw neither player enjoy more than a 2-up lead throughout the 35 holes. With the usual match-play concessions, the two finalists combined for 21 birdies and an eagle. It also included a pair of afternoon weather delays totaling 83 minutes.

Goodwin, who reached the Round of 16 in last year’s Junior Amateur and qualified for match play in the 2015 U.S. Amateur, enjoyed a 1-up lead before the first 36-minute delay just after the players hit their tee shots on the par-3 32nd hole.

Both Lee and Goodwin converted short birdie putts of 12 and 8 feet, respectively, when play resumed, but on the par-4 33rd, Goodwin’s 6-iron approach from 190 yards found the water. Lee two-putted for a winning par to square the match and followed by stuffing a 6-iron to 18 feet on the par-3, 210-yard 34th hole. Goodwin’s tee shot barely cleared the water hazard. His ensuing chip rolled a few feet past the hole, but he never had to putt it after Lee calmly rolled in his birdie putt for a 1-up lead.

On the par-5 35th, Goodwin found the green with his second, while Lee’s approach came up just short in a grass bunker.  Goodwin’s long downhill eagle try rolled 9 feet by the hole. Lee followed with a perfect flop shot that stopped 3½ feet from the flagstick. Goodwin pulled his par putt and as Lee was lining up the potential championship-winning putt, the USGA blew the horn because of inclement weather.

Lee, the 2015 Western Australia Amateur champion, smiled as he walked off the green to a waiting cart. When the players returned to the course, it took all of a few seconds for Lee to convert the short birdie putt. He hugged his local Honors Course caddie, Reid Smith, his mother, Clara, and Brad James, Golf Australia’s director of high performance.

“I had a few minutes to come together and just think about that putt, and think about the other putts that I’ve had similar to that one,” said Lee. “I missed a few low, so I thought I would hit it a bit higher. It went right in the middle.”

In the morning 18, Goodwin built a 2-up lead through the first nine holes, only to see Lee win holes 10 and 11 to square the match.

“I guess it was good and bad in a different way,” said Lee of constantly playing catch-up in the morning. “I knew I had to stick my head out and just do what I’ve been doing every single day. Me and Reid did a great job on every shot. Every shot we hit was precise.”

The two halved the next three holes before Goodwin and Lee alternated winning Nos. 15-18, with Lee closing the round with a 14-foot birdie.

“I learned I can play with the best [junior] players in the world,” said Goodwin of his takeaway from the week. “I kind of already knew that, but it’s always nice to just have more experience doing it and everything. My wedges were great this week, and that was one of the things that kept me going the entire time. I just need to polish up my irons a little bit more, though, and I can do that over a period of time.”

When asked to sum up his memories of the week and course, Lee said: “It’s the best course I’ve ever played. It’s a great match-play course. It’s challenging in every way.”

Both finalists are exempt into next month’s U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club outside of Detroit, and are exempt into sectional qualifying for the 2017 U.S. Open. They are also exempt into next year’s U.S. Junior Amateur at Flint Hills National in Andover, Kan. With the age limit changing to 18 next year, Goodwin also will be exempt into the 2018 Junior Amateur at Baltusrol Golf Club.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.

Rare Back-to-Back Holes-in-One by PGA Junior League Golfers in Hilton Head

(RELEASE) - On hole #5 at Country Club of Hilton Head – a par 3, 89 yards, and carried over water – 13-year-old Harrison Mancill (right) of one of two Country Club of Hilton Head PGA Junior League Golf teams aced the hole with a wedge, immediately answered by 10-year-old John Berrigan (left) with the Wexford Plantation PGA Junior League Golf team, who aced it with a 9 iron.

The Country Club of Hilton Head teams are captained by PGA Professional Jeff Picus, and the Wexford Plantation team is captained by PGA Apprentice James Scales. This is the fourth year Hilton Head has hosted PGA Junior League Golf, fielding 8 teams in the area this year. Nationally, 36,000 boys and girls are participating in the program.

SCNS Sports Foods Partners with Nextgengolf to Supply Bars to Amateur Players

(UPLAND, CA) - SCNS Sports Foods, maker of the popular 1st Tee and 10th Tee nutrition and energy bars, has become a Tournament Supplier of Nextgengolf. The group will supply amateur players with its nutritional bars to fuel their game at Nextgengolf events throughout the U.S.

“SNCS Sports Foods couldn’t be more proud to support young amateur golfers and to inform the golf world how Nextgengolf is helping grow the game,” said Bill Stewart, Chief Operating Officer at SCNS Sports Foods.

Nextgengolf is the leading entity for golfers aged 18-34 in the U.S. The organization was founded by Kris Hart to help solve some of the fundamental problems with non-varsity collegiate golf.  In 2013, Nextgengolf merged with the National Collegiate Club Golf Association (NCCGA), the governing body for collegiate club golf.  Nextgengolf coordinates the City Tour tournaments for young adults around the U.S. as well as NCCGA tournaments for non-varsity college golfers.

“We know that golfers need sustained energy in order to play their best, so we are happy to distribute 1st Tee and 10th Tee bars at our events,” said Hart. “Nextgengolf participants enjoy the taste of the bars and are glad to have a healthy snack on the course.”

SCNS Sports Foods has seven different types of nutrition and energy bars. The original 1st Tee bar comes in two different flavors: Oatmeal Raisin and Chocolate Peanut, and contain all-natural chamomile, hops and valerian root to help reduce anxiety on the first tee.  Most recent additions to the 1st Tee line are two gluten-free bars: Dark Chocolate Chip Trail Mix bar and Honey Almond Snack bar.

There are three flavors of the 10th Tee bar, two of which contain green tea and panax ginseng extracts to help sustain energy right through the back nine. Those flavors are Peanut Honey and Chocolate Peanut Caramel.

“We created the 10th Tee bars to look and taste like a candy bar, because a lot of golfers like to grab a candy bar at the turn,” said Stewart. “But our bars contain half the fat and twice the protein of most candy bars. So while you will get the same enjoyment as you would eating a traditional candy bar, you also will gain the energy-sustaining benefit for the back nine from our 10th Tee bars.” Earlier this year the company launched a gluten free 10th Tee Cranberry Trail Mix bar.

Seeding
The eight countries will be seeded #1 through #8 and they will be divided into two brackets based on the cumulative team score of the four players' Rolex World Rankings.

Knuth Golf’s High Heat Driver, Metalwoods Available for Testing at Demo Days in Central Florida

(BONITA, CA) – High Heat’s driver, 3-wood and hybrid have taken the golf industry by storm, with their lower and deeper center of gravity, perfectly situated for the amateur golf swing.

But many golfers wouldn’t know it. Knuth Golf is a small company with an even smaller marketing budget that can’t match that of the major brands.

Their clubs compare favorably, however. Test results from golf’s most respected independent robotic testing organization – Golf Laboratories – showed that High Heat driver was longer, more accurate and more forgiving than the major brands. Further, customers rave about how much extra distance and increased accuracy High Heat provides them.

If you live in Central Florida you can find out first-hand just how special these clubs are. Knuth Golf is conducting several Demo Days in the Orlando area next week, and the public is invited to try the clubs, get properly fitted and receive discounts.New Head Image

Here is the schedule for the demo events, which run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.:
- Tuesday, July 26: The Villages’ Palmer Legends Custom Club Shop.
- Wednesday, July 27: Timacuan Golf & Country Club in Lake Mary.
- Thursday, July 28: The Villages’ Sarasota Golf Practice Center.
- Friday, July 29: The Villages’ Sarasota Golf Practice Center.

Dean Knuth, a former USGA Senior Director, designed High Heat metalwoods specifically with amateurs in mind because amateur golfers have much different performance needs than the Tour pros. High Heat has a 25% deeper and 18% lower CG than major brands, and features Optimal CG Changer and Fire Zone Face technologies.

The Fire Zone Face Technology includes a unique face with a combination of seven different zones of variable thickness, including patented "parabolic" lobes at the top of the toe and heel of the face. This increases spring-like effect across the entire sweet spot zone while still conforming to USGA Rules and increasing the accuracy of High Heat.

High Heat’s 3-wood and hybrid feature a Beta Titanium cup face, providing a significantly increased spring-like effect across the entire face for extra distance and increased forgiveness compared to traditional steel faces that major brands offer. This is extremely important for amateurs who don’t always hit the center of the clubface.

After hitting the family of High Heat metalwoods at January’s PGA Merchandise Show, golf writer Tony Dear wrote, “I was left wondering what Knuth knows that other manufacturers don’t.”  And Sports Illustrated Golf Writer Gary Van Sickle wrote: “the most significant technological innovation in golf equipment, and a game changer for amateur golfers.”

The High Heat driver won the prestigious ING Industry Honors award for Product Ingenuity this year, as voted upon the members of the 26-year-old International Network of Golf, a non-profit, media-based networking organization. Most recently, Dean Knuth was the only golf club designer named on Golf Inc. magazine’s list of “Nine Innovators In Player Development.”

USGA Selects Chambers Bay as Site for 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship

The Home Course to Serve as Stroke-Play Co-Host

(FAR HILLS, N.J.) – Chambers Bay, in University Place, Wash., has been selected by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as the site of the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship. The dates of the championship are May 25-29.

The Home Course, in DuPont, Wash., which is cooperatively owned and operated by the Pacific Northwest Golf Association (PNGA) and the Washington State Golf Association (WSGA), will serve as the stroke-play co-host.

The 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball is the third USGA championship to be held at Chambers Bay, which is owned by Pierce County. The public facility also hosted the 2010 U.S. Amateur, won by Peter Uihlein, and the 2015 U.S. Open, won by Jordan Spieth.

“Bringing the USGA’s newest men’s championship to Chambers Bay underscores our strong relationship with Pierce County as well as with the PNGA and the WSGA, since it will be the third USGA championship there in a decade,” said Stuart Francis, chairman of the USGA Championship Committee. “We have a long history of returning to host sites with excellent golf courses, where we have conducted successful and memorable championships.”

Chambers Bay, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., opened in 2007. The Home Course was designed by Mike Asmundson and also opened in 2007. The Home Course was the stroke-play co-host for the 2010 U.S. Amateur, as well as the site of the final U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship in 2014, won by Fumie (Alice) Jo.

“We are thrilled to welcome the USGA back to Chambers Bay and the Pacific Northwest for the 2019 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship,” said Pat McCarthy, Pierce County executive. “Our community wrapped its collective arms around the record-setting 2015 U.S. Open and I’m confident we will host another successful championship in 2019.”

The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship is strictly for amateurs with no age restrictions. Partners comprising teams or sides will not be required to be from the same club, state or country. Entry is limited to individuals with a Handicap Index not to exceed 5.4.

The U.S. Amateur Four-Ball will consist of 128 two-player teams each playing their own ball throughout the round. Each team’s score will be determined by using the lower score of the partners for each hole. After 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying, the field will be reduced to the low 32 teams for the championship’s match-play bracket (all matches contested at 18 holes).

In 2017, the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship will be conducted at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, in the Village of Pinehurst, N.C., and in 2018, the championship will be conducted at Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta, Fla.

Club-Management Software Company Clubessential Receives Growth Investment from Battery Ventures

“Membership Management” and Back-Office Software Provider for Golf, Other Private Clubs Now Set to Accelerate Growth With Strategic Acquisitions

(Cincinnati, OH) – Battery Ventures, a global investment firm, has made a significant growth-equity investment in Clubessential LLC, a fast-growing provider of Web-based software for golf, city, yacht and other private clubs. Clubessential intends to use the new capital to accelerate growth by investing in product innovation, sales and marketing, and acquisitions. Specific terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Clubessential, which is based in Cincinnati, sells front- and back-end “software-as-a-service” (SaaS) applications to private clubs to help them manage various aspects of their operations. The company’s main product is a suite of modules designed to automate various club operations; inform and engage members; and leverage operational and customer data.

The product—called the “Clubessential Unified Suite”—is a turnkey solution that allows club members to log into club websites, check their accounts, make reservations or update their profiles. The back-end suite includes a full accounting system to support club operations, including retail and food-and-beverage, point-of-sale solutions. The company also offers customer-relationship management, mobile-app and online-payment products. Overall, the technology allows clubs to deliver higher levels of service to members, partly by leveraging cutting-edge analytics.

Clubessential was founded in 1998 and has about 175 employees in Cincinnati as well as Austin, TX; Raleigh, NC; Kansas City; and Boston.

Battery has invested in many industry-specific, Web-software companies like Clubessential, a category of companies which generally offer customers highly specialized products as well as high-quality support and services, said Morad Elhafed, a Battery Ventures partner who will join Clubessential’s board.

“Clubessential’s growth rate is impressive, and the company has built an extremely strong business providing software to the private-club market,” Elhafed added. “The sector is large but fragmented, and we believe Clubessential can serve as a solid platform for consolidation and growth in the industry. We are thrilled to be the first institutional investor in the company.”

“Several years ago, we realized we would need external equity financing to support our growing operations, launch new products and enter new markets,” said Dr. William Ivers, Clubessential’s CEO. “We had been speaking with Battery since 2013 - they were our favorite partner choice because of their history in SaaS investing, their knowledge of our target markets and their skill in accelerating growth and acquisitions. In 2015 our growth jumped with the introduction of the Unified Suite and our entry into the resort market – we knew it was time to add a strong financial partner.”

Former sports writer invests in youth sports business to teach and grow the game of golf throughout local schools, community centers and golf courses

(Nashville, TN) – When schools are back in session this fall and TGA Premier Junior Golf (TGA) starts its leading after-school and community based golf enrichment programs once again, a new chapter will add to the impact of youngsters nationwide.

Kevin Connelly, a former sports writer, is the latest entrepreneur to invest in the TGA (Teach Grow Achieve) franchise model to grow the game at the introductory and recreational level in Nashville, Tenn., which will include the communities of Brentwood, Franklin, Mt. Juliet, Smyrna, Antioch and LaVergne.

“I’ve seen first-hand how few opportunities there are for kids to get involved with golf in schools, especially with all of the options in sports for kids to play,” Connelly said. “The TGA program, with its innovative educational curriculum, will be a great experience that impacts students, families and the future growth of the game here in Nashville.”

Connelly, 26, is a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He grew up playing a variety of sports, including golf and tennis, and along the way learned the value that sports can have on a youth’s life. When he started contemplating a career change from journalism, he wanted to stay connected to sports and bringing TGA’s impressive business model and program to south Nashville fit his plans perfectly.

“Nashville is such a vibrant and growing city with more and more families being added every day,” he said. “TGA is perfect for such an active community. There is a strong marketplace here for after-school golf enrichment programs, which will transition seamlessly year round into the popular TGA summer camp programs."

Connelly will also be receiving well-guided entrepreneurial experience from his mother, Laura Connelly, who will be the operations manager for the business. She recognized Dave Robinson’s success with TGA in Detroit, another former sports journalist with the Detroit Free Press, and thought it might be perfect for her son.

Laura, who has been an entrepreneur for most of her business life, started a kids’ exercise program when her son Kevin was young, offering the program to day centers and preschools.  Later she and her husband Bill owned an executive recruiting and training business for many years. It was only natural that Kevin would combine his own entrepreneurial spirit with his love of sports to launch TGA of South Nashville, and recruit Laura to handle the behind-the-scenes details.

“TGA is a very professional organization with a mission that spoke to me – sports change lives,” Laura said. “I’ve seen that with all of my kids, and look forward to giving other young people the same opportunity."

“By developing an early appreciation for golf, they’ve got something they can carry with them throughout life. The STEM curriculum is also an added bonus, and integrating it into the game of golf makes it fun for the kids, and popular with parents and schools.”

The TGA model’s successful formula is two-fold: First, introductory golf programs are brought directly into schools and community centers and put on a level playing field with other mainstream sports on the menu of activities for elementary and middle school students. Second, following the introductory programs, TGA’s Player Pathway transitions students and their families to golf courses to participate in recreational programs such as camps, leagues and parent-child events.

Robert Garrigus Shoots Low Round of 62 on Sunday with Cure CX1 Putter at the Barbasol Championship

(Jacksonville, FL) - Each week more and more Top Professionals from the PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour are choosing to put a Cure Putter into play. This past weekend, at the Barbasol Championship in Auburn, Alabama, Robert Garrigus used a Cure Classic Series putter to shoot Sunday's Lowest Round, a bogey-free 62, and finish T-11th. Garrigus Ranked #1 in Birdies for the tournament with 26 including 9 on Sunday alone.

Garrigus finished T-4th at the AT&T Byron Nelson and T-8th at the Quicken Loans National earlier this season, and his finish at the Barbasol earned him a paycheck for $65,333.00 and 32 FedEx Cup Points. He's now earned $575,000.00 in his last 5 starts since he put a Cure putter into play.

Garrigus was interviewed by Golf Life Television at the Barracuda Championship in Reno recently and had this to say about Cure Putters, "It's a great putter and it's completely changed my career for the last month - just being able to be on the plus side of strokes gained putting. As soon as I put this putter in the bag, I made a cut and then finished in the top 25, then I finished in the top five,  I almost won Dallas. I had a good chance at congressional, I just didn't hit it as good but my putter kept me going in the Top 10. I was + 2.38 in putting - I don't think I've ever been that my career. That's huge! If I can have bad weeks in ball striking and still finish in the Top 10 like that, it just makes me smile. It's just awesome. I'm so excited. Everybody's asking me about it now that I'm playing well and putting well." Garrigus went on to say, "I've putted with a number of putters over the years, long short, I've probably done everything - It was really refreshing when I picked up the Cure putter. It's really nice, the roll is incredible... and once I picked one of these up, I started rolling putts in right away. That gave me confidence and confidence in the game is everything."

"We'd like to congratulate Robert on another great week and strong finish on Sunday. We're thrilled to have him rolling a Cure putter and it's very exciting for us to see his putting stats improve as we follow his success each week on Tour. We wish Robert all the best and can't wait to see what the rest of the season holds," said Jim McCarthy, CEO of Cure Putters.

Lee Wybranski Creates Official Posters for PGA Championship and Ryder Cup

Joining beautiful course renderings is one-of-a-kind teams poster for the game’s most exciting event, the Ryder Cup

(Flagstaff, Ariz.) – When golf holds its biggest events, Lee Wybranski paints their posters. This has proven true again in 2016, and Wybranski is capping the year with two of the game’s most exciting spectacles—the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup, both conducted by the PGA of America.

Wybranski’s official poster for the 98th PGA Championship—to be held July 28-31 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.—portrays two of the famous club’s most iconic sights: the Tudor revival-style clubhouse and the picturesque, par-3 fourth hole.

“I got out of the way and let the grandeur of Baltusrol carry the day,” says Wybranski of his fourth poster for a PGA Championship. “I always knew we were going to work with the clubhouse, because as great a course as Baltusrol is, it is known for that beautiful big clubhouse, too.

“No. 4 is one of the signature holes, but I wanted to take a different view, from the green back, askance to the line of play. It also brought water into the foreground and I always like bringing water into the picture.”

For the biennial Ryder Cup—being played at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 2016—Wybranski is, for the first time, preparing two paintings, both an official event poster showing the course plus a first-time-ever, last-minute commemoration of the members of the U.S. and European teams.

The poster depicts the 16th hole at Hazeltine, which will be played as the 7th for the Ryder Cup. “It’s one of the most photographed holes out there, but I tried to take a different look,” says Wybranski. “I wanted to include the replica of the Swilken Bridge on that hole, which is dedicated to Payne Stewart, who won his second major championship there in 1991. A bridge is a natural element to work into any painting, but when I saw the plaque about Payne, I felt that honoring him was a nice tip of the cap to the Ryder Cup, in which he played such an important part, and to the sportsman he was.”

Wybranski’s other Ryder Cup poster will focus on the trophy and the teams. “But it will have to wait to be completed until the bitter end because the last player isn’t announced until the Sunday before the competition begins,” explains Wybranski. “It will be one of the very few items with the full list of players from both sides.”

Another Wybranski creation is an embossed metal sign with a golf theme. “It’s of my second favorite view at Hazeltine, from the top of the hill on the 10th fairway with the 10th and 16th greens in view.”

Co-Medalist Choi, Defending Champion Seong Advance at U.S. Girls' Junior

68th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship conducted by the United States Golf Association

(PARAMUS, N.J.) – Co-medalist Hye-Jin Choi and defending champion Eun Jeong Seong, both of the Republic of Korea, were among the 32 players who won first-round matches Wednesday in the 68th U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.

Choi, the low amateur in the 2016 U.S. Women’s Open two weeks ago, defeated Nicole Whiston, of San Diego, Calif., by building a 4-up lead through seven holes on The Ridgewood Country Club’s 6,406-yard composite course and never trailed on the way to a 4-and-3 victory.

“I think everything worked out well today,” said Choi, 16, through an interpreter. “My putts were great and my drivers were great. I started out really great, which took some pressure off me and allowed me to play well.”

Choi, who is No. 15 in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), is a 16-year-old junior at Haksan Women’s High School in Gimhaesi.

Seong, 16, the runner-up in the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links, gained a 3-up lead through nine holes against Katherine Muzi and followed up with wins on holes 12 and 14 to close the match. Seong, a quarterfinalist in the 2014 U.S. Women’s Amateur, won all five holes with pars.

“I didn’t have a birdie today,” said Seong, who is No. 25 in the WAGR. “But she made a couple mistakes today, which is how I won.”

Choi’s fellow co-medalist, Sadie Englemann, 14, of Austin, Texas, lost, 1 down, to Kendall Griffin, 17, of Sebring, Fla.

“I thought I played really well but she made a lot of putts,” said Englemann, who is a ninth-grade high school student. “She played really awesome, I didn’t make too many, but I thought I played well.”

Facing a 2-down deficit on the eighth tee, Griffin, who was the Florida State Golf Association Girls Player of the Year in 2013, won four of the next six holes – three with birdies – to offset an Englemann birdie and gain a 1-up lead through 13 holes.

Griffin lost the 17th hole with a triple bogey to square the match, but won the match with a bogey on the 18th.

“Going into the last hole even with the medalist, you never know what’s going to happen,” said Griffin, who combined with Athena Yang to earn medialist honors in the inaugural U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball in 2015. “So I just tried to play my own game, and it worked out.”

Hailee Cooper, of Montgomery, Texas, the 2016 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball champion with Kaitlyn Papp, advanced with a 6-and-5 win over Emma Bradley.

“The past few days I’ve made a lot of birdies, but I’ve also made a lot of bogeys, too,” said Cooper. “I feel like I definitely dialed down the bogeys and figured out how to make pars in difficult situations.”

Other winners included: 2016 USA Curtis Cup Team member Andrea Lee, 17, of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; Jayna Choi, 15, of Collierville, Tenn., a semifinalist in the 2015 championship; and Yu Sang Hou, 17, and Yu Chiang Hou, 15, sisters from Chinese Taipei.

Lee’s Curtis Cup teammate Mika Liu, of Beverly Hills, Calif., the 2015 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball champion with Rinko Mitsunaga, was defeated by Yujeong Son, 15, of the Republic of Korea.

The 2016 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship consists of 36 holes of stroke play, followed by six rounds of match play, which concludes with Saturday’s 36-hole championship.

The U.S. Girls’ Junior is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
