Season One of ‘Secret Golf with Steve Elkington’ captures six Telly Awards

Popular show featuring 1995 PGA Champion traveling the nation and telling viewers about the hidden stories in golf recognized with two Silver, four Bronze awards

(RELEASE) - “Secret Golf with Steve Elkington” not only captured the imagination of golfers everywhere with its innovative way of exploring the passion of golf, but the first season of the popular show captured six Telly Awards for production excellence, it was announced Wednesday.

The show, featuring major champion and Champions Tour mainstay Steve Elkington traveling the United States and Canada exploring the hidden stories in golf on all levels, made its second season debut on CBS Sports Network Saturday, May 9. It airs Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT through mid-August.

Last season’s shows under the title, “The Rural Golfer,” earned Silver Awards (the highest honor) in the Entertainment category for the episode featuring Elkington learning calf roping from World Champions Nick Sartain and Rich Skelton, and an episode on Texas golf history and the Pan American Golf Association filmed at the legendary Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio, the original home of the Texas Open.

The show earned Bronze Awards in the Sports category for its episode on the Freedom Golf Association, where Elkington worked with special needs golfers outside of Chicago; the roping show; an episode on Jacksonville’s Hyde Park Golf Course – where Ben Hogan once made an 11 on a par-3 during the Jacksonville Open -- and the penultimate episode: Elkington taking on Tactical Team Members at Angola’s Prison View Golf Course on the grounds of the maximum-security Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

“I am exceptionally proud of my production staff and of Steve for their unending commitment to putting out a show that everyone out there can relate to, whether they play golf or not,” Coleman said. “I was hoping we might win one, but to win six Telly Awards in our first year is just awesome.”

The Telly Awards reflect outstanding local, regional and cable TV programs and commercials. Winners represent the best work of respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators and corporate video departments. The organization received more than 12,000 entries from 50 countries.

A prestigious judging panel of more than 650 accomplished industry professionals, each a past Silver Telly recipient, and a member of The Silver Telly Council, judged the competition. The Silver Council evaluated entries to recognize distinction in creative work – entries do not compete against each other, rather entries are judged against a high standard of merit. Less than 10% of entries are honored with a Silver Telly, the highest honor. Other outstanding work is awarded a Bronze Telly.

“The Telly Awards has a mission to honor the very best in film and video,” said Linda Day, Executive Director of the Telly Awards. “Secret Golf’s accomplishment illustrates their creativity, skill, and dedication to their craft and serves as a testament to great film and video production.”
