Product Review: Sundog Eyewear

Allow me to begin this review with an admission ... I don’t like wearing sunglasses while I golf. Though I also don’t enjoy squinting or losing a ball in the sun, a history of bad experiences has jaded me on trying to hit a golf ball while wearing sunglasses. Correction: Had jaded me.

Enter Sundog Eyewear.

The BOLT Mela-Lens ($79.99) changed my way of thinking. Extremely light with vented lens to help reduce the risk of fogging in humid climates, the BOLT’s Megol temple tips and adjustable Megol nose pad provide non-slip performance and comfort.

Pair after pair of sunglasses made me feel as if the ball was 10 feet away from me at address. Not the BOLT. Picture an overcast day without a cloud in the sky. Ideal vision and you don’t even realize you’re wearing sunglasses.

The secret is in the Mela-Lens. This technology filters high energy visible light [HEVL] that delivers greater vision performance and enhanced protection. The ‘blue light’ potion of the light spectrum generates “veiled glare” and Mela-Lens reduces this form of glare without polarization. The Mela-Lens provides improved contrast and sharpened definition.

According to Sundog, the Mela-Lens name is derived from “Melanin,” the active ingredient in the lens that is based on a naturally-produced pigment in the human body that acts as a sunscreen protecting the eyes and skin from light damage. The exclusive Sundog Mela-Lens absorbs light seamlessly over a broad spectral range, providing superior filtration of blue light and blocks 100 percent Ultraviolet (A/B) light. By filtering instead of blocking blue light, Melanin Lens Technology does not affect color perception unlike inferior “blue blocking” technology.

Preventing potential damage to the eye foolishly outweighs many golfers’ desire to not disrupt their game. Unfortunately, damage to the eye occurs with exposure and absorption of unfiltered sunlight. The risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and the formation of cataracts represent the most common forms of damage. Research has shown that effective filtration of blue light provides superior vision protection. By filtering HEV light, internal eye reflection of light (veiled glare) is reduced resulting in less vision fatigue, allowing for enhanced performance.

Sundog Eyewear Mela-Lens technology is offered in five varieties:
* Mela-Lens - outstanding HEVL protection without polarization, available in brown and smoke tints.
* Mela-Lens Photochromic - HEVL protection with lenses that lighten/darkens with changing light intensity, available in brown tint.
* Mela-Lens Polarized  - HEVL protection with the added benefit of polarization for protection from glare and veiled glare, available in brown and smoke tints.
* Mela-Lens Polarized/Photochromic – the ultimate combination in sunglass performance - currently available in the Mark Melnyk Signature Series Collection of fishing sunglasses and three additional models EVO, Laser and Rogue. Available in brown tint.
* Mela-Lens Polarized/Photochromic with Clari-Coat – the highest standard in sunglass performance: includes olephobic (oil repellent) and hydrophobic (water repellent) custom coatings. This lens is currently available in the Mark Melnyk Signature Series Collection of fishing sunglasses and three additional models – EVO, Laser and Rogue. Available in brown tint.
