St. Andrews Golf Art Celebrates Hogan's Merion Comeback Victory

Ben Hogan’s Historic 1950 U.S. Open Victory at Merion Memorialized in St. Andrews Golf Art Painting

(St. Andrews, Scotland) — St. Andrews Golf Art (www.standrewsgolfart.com) pays tribute to next week’s U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club by highlighting artist Walt Spitzmiller’s evocative painting of one of golf’s most iconic shots—Ben Hogan’s famed 1-iron onto Merion’s 18th green on the 72nd hole of the 1950 U.S. Open.  Hogan’s subsequent par put him in an 18-hole playoff for the championship title, which is remembered as one of golf’s most improbable wins.  Sixteen months earlier, Hogan had survived a near fatal car accident and was told he’d never walk again or play golf.

Spitzmiller’s colorful pastel interpretation captures Hogan from an angle different from the famous black and white photograph of the day that immortalized the historic 213-yard 1-iron strike.  St. Andrews Golf Art also offers seven other works depicting Hogan at major championships, including Spitzmiller’s exclusive bronze statue of “The Hawk’s” memorable 1-iron follow-through pose.

Some 11 former U.S. Open champions are represented in the St. Andrews Golf Art gallery.  Francis Ouimet, Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Watson, Curtis Strange, Payne Stewart, Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Graeme McDowell are among the selections available for purchase.  Based in the home of golf, St. Andrews Golf Art is an exceptional online resource for collectors who seek original art, open edition giclee prints (canvas and paper), lithographs or bronzes from established artists who have concentrated on golf as an inspiration for their work.
