Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño Wins 2012 BMW Italian Open

(HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA) – Cleveland Golf/Srixon congratulates staffer Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño for his victory in the European Tour’s 2012 BMW Italian Open over the weekend at Royal Park I Roveri, in Turin. With this victory, Fernandez-Castaño, a 31-year-old native of Madrid, Spain, won his sixth European Tour title and second Italian Open. Fernandez-Castaño won his first Italian Open in 2007.

"It felt like match play out there and I'm delighted to have come out on top," said Fernandez-Castaño, who shot an 8-under-par 64 in the final round for a 24-under total and a two-shot triumph. "It feels very special to win this tournament again. I knew it would have to be a low round to win today and so it proved.”

Fernandez-Castaño narrowly missed out on qualifying for the European Ryder Cup team, but is hopeful this victory will be a springboard for more individual success as his season builds towards a climax at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai in November. The €250,000 first-place check in Italy vaulted him to 19th in The Race to Dubai with earnings of €831,951. If he can finish in the top 10, he’ll have an opportunity to claim a slice of the $3.75 million Bonus Pool at the end of the season.

“I can’t wait to get to Dubai for the DP World Tour Championship,” said Fernandez-Castaño. “To be in that elite field for the end-of-year event means you have had a great year. I’ve jumped up many spots with this win, and now I have a chance of finishing in the top 10.”

Fernandez-Castaño plays a Cleveland HiBORE Monster XLS driver (9.5°), a Cleveland Launcher Ultralite FL fairway wood (13°), Cleveland CG1 Tour irons (4-PW), Cleveland 588 Forged wedges (52°/ 58°) and a Srixon Z-STAR XV ball, while wearing a Cleveland hat, carrying a Cleveland bag and wearing a Srixon glove.
