Traveling Golfer Takes Golf and Food Tour of Pennsylvania’s Historic Montgomery County

(PHILADELPHIA, Pa.) — Montgomery County has long been known as the “Golf Capitol of Pennsylvania.” As late as 2004 there were 60 golf courses in this tiny county, that measures 28 miles long and 14 miles wide. At that time, it boasted more golf courses – per square mile – than any county in America.

The pressures of an economic crash, housing developments and other factors have caused the total number to shrink to 50 courses in the county. But the quality of the courses that remain is so high it still places Montgomery County on a golf pedestal.

In addition, the development of upscale shopping areas, outstanding restaurants and interesting activities have turned Montgomery County into a golf and vacation paradise. So close to the hustle and bustle of Philadelphia, yet sitting amidst the natural splendor of a scenic environment.

It is no wonder that Montgomery County came roaring out of the tragedy of the pandemic with both barrels blazing – golf and tourism at the most active level.

“We have great golf … and restaurants … and parks … and history … and shopping. Montgomery County isn’t just a place to play golf, it’s a destination,” proclaims Mike Bowman, president and CEO of the Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board.

For all of those reasons, Montgomery County has been selected as the topic of the April episode of the award-winning Traveling Golfer television show. And, if you think all of the courses in this golf-rich destination are eye-popping, wait until you see the culinary treasures that await gastronomic discovery.

On the golf side, the show will visit some of the many courses that have been reborn through recent renovation projects – a concerted effort that has kept Montgomery County at the forefront of America’s golf scene.

On the culinary side, the focus will turn to some of the iconic foods that make a visit to Montgomery County so much fun. Of course, there will be a discussion of the exalted cheesesteak … and how a proper one is constructed. But there will be an inspection of some other taste treats, which may be unique to the area. Why the tomato pie is a staple for every party. Why the zep is different from a hoagie or a sub. Sweet sauce pizza? The show will explain that also.

“I have been wandering around Montgomery County for most of my adult life,” says Traveling Golfer host Tony Leodora. “I have always said it was one of the best places to work and play. Unlocking all of those hidden gems in this show has been a true example of a labor of love.”
