Syracuse Coaching Legend Jim Boeheim Joins "Golf Advisor Round Trip"
Turning Stone Resort in New York State Serves as Location for Episode Premiere tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET on GOLF Channel
(ORLANDO, Fla.) – College basketball icon Jim Boeheim will join host Matt Ginella on the next episode of GOLF Advisor Round Trip, the popular GOLF Channel travel series that takes viewers around the globe to explore a variety of destinations offering the best in golf, resort accommodations, dining and related activities. Turning Stone Resort, rooted in the heart of New York’s Oneida Indian Nation, serves as the host location for the episode, which tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET.
“Turning Stone is a wonderful success story, which has become a world-class travel destination and should be on everybody’s buddy trip bucket-list, for sure,” said Ginella. “Everything here is built around the experience.”
Established in 1993 through the vision of Oneida Nation Enterprises CEO Ray Halbritter, Turning Stone Resort features first-class lodging, fine and casual dining options and a $25 million entertainment mega-plex, as well as world-class golf. Ginella showcases Turning Stone’s three golf courses, which boast designs by three of the game’s most sought-after architects: Tom Fazio (Atunyote), Rick Smith (Shenendoah) and Robert Trent Jones Jr. (Kaluhyat). The resort also features an indoor golf facility where guests can practice both their long and short games.
Joining Ginella on the Jones Jr.-designed Kaluhyat course is Boeheim, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and the head basketball coach at Syracuse University since 1976. A long-time golfer, Boeheim played for the first time at age 5 with cut-down clubs made by his father. Ginella points out the little-known fact that Boeheim first coached golf at Syracuse for five years before becoming an assistant coach in basketball, but still says he would rather have to make a free throw than a three-foot putt. “Tells you something about my game,” Boeheim said.
When asked about his experiences at Turning Stone, Boheim continues, “I tell people if you want to go someplace for a golf trip, you won’t find a better place. He’s (Halbritter) unrivaled in that area. He cares about the land and his people. Three great golf courses, a world class lodge and hotel and gaming, he’s made everything first class.”
GOLF Advisor Getaways provide opportunities for individuals and groups to travel with Ginella and other GOLF Advisor personalities to the destinations featured on the GOLF Advisor Round Trip series. Lamkin Releases Innovative Additions to the Popular SONAR Grip Line
(SAN DIEGO) – Lamkin Grips, the innovation leader in golf grip manufacturing, has an-nounced the introduction of two new models in its hugely popular SONAR line. The new SONAR TOUR and SONAR WRAP grips add distinctive options to the unmistakable feel and all-weather per-formance of the SONAR grip family that was a runaway success for Lamkin in 2018.
Both additions to the SONAR line benefit from Lamkin’s proprietary FINGERPRINT Technology and GENISIS material. Lamkin’s proprietary FINGERPRINT technology distributes intricate and densely spaced patterns throughout the grip’s surface. These micro-textures deliver a smooth, comfortable surface feel along with a high level of grip traction for enhanced comfort, confidence and all-weather control. Lamkin’s patent-pending GENESIS material provides unrivalled grip comfort by combining a slightly softer feel than traditional rubber with durability that exceeds all comparable grip materials.
Designed in collaboration with Lamkin’s Tour ambassador Justin Rose, SONAR TOUR features the omni-directional grip traction provided by FINGERPRINT Technology combined with a firmer du-rometer Lamkin GENESIS material for enhanced torsion control under the pressure of higher swing speeds. A unique finishing process preserves SONAR TOUR’s super-tacky surface feel, ensuring the Tour inspired design retains the line’s comfortable quality. A traditional taper shape delivers a con-ventional feel and in a final nod to its Tour inspiration the grip is fitted with a logo down design, often preferred by the best players in the world.
SONAR WRAP provides the super tacky feel and all-weather performance of SONAR in a new wrap style model. The SONAR WRAP grip benefits from Lamkin’s proprietary FINGERPRINT Technology and patent-pending GENESIS material to deliver a grip that has unprecedented levels of comfort and traction. To further enhance the simulated wrap feel, SONAR WRAP includes an ergonomic ‘Pro-gressive Skive’, with fluctuating spiral dimensions based on grip size and is available in both Stand-ard+ and Mid Size+ variations.
Lamkin CEO and President Bob Lamkin is thrilled with the response to the SONAR and excited to show off the line extension. He said, “The combination of GENESIS material and FINGERPRINT Tech-nology in the SONAR grip delivers an ideal feel for such a wide audience of players. The two addi-tions to the line add variations for golfers who have specific preferences in their grip style. I’m very excited about the success of the SONAR line and look forward to sharing the incredible feel of the new grips with golfers worldwide.”
Both lines are available at select golf retailers and at www.Lamkingrips.com.

Alex Beach, Danny Balin Lead at halfway point of the 52nd PGA Professional Championship
(BLUFFTON, S.C.) – Metropolitan PGA Section Members Alex Beach of Stamford, Connecticut, and Danny Balin of Irvington, New York, have been shadowing each other for years on the course, whether it was dueling in the Empire State or in the warmth of a South Florida winter.
On a gusty Monday at Belfair, the stakes got a notch higher in the 52nd PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, Club Car and OMEGA.
Beach, a 29-year-old PGA Assistant Professional at Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, eagled the par-5 third hole on the East Course to fuel a 4-under-par 67 and the 36-hole lead at 8-under-par 135 in the largest all-professional national championship. Beach owns a one-stroke margin over Balin, a 37-year-old PGA Assistant Professional at Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, New York.
Both Beach and Balin tamed the challenging par-71 East layout with a proper dose of patience to handle the firm putting surfaces. Balin collected six birdies against one bogey for a sizzling 66, which was his second-lowest 18-hole performance in 21 rounds covering five previous appearances.
Beach hit a 3-wood into the 545-yard, par-5 No. 3 hole on the East, and made an eight-foot eagle putt. He then rolled home a pair of long distance birdie putts – a 50-footer on No. 8 and a 40-footer on No. 13.
“We had a good game plan coming in. Just hit some good shots and played very conservatively,” said Beach. “I was fortunate to make some putts on the holes that I played well. On the back nine, it got a little loose. To make it through today under par was a huge achievement.”
Enjoying his first perch atop the Championship leaderboard, Beach also tempers that feeling by reflection upon journey to health. In June 2016, he suffered a blood clot in his left leg before that year’s Championship.
By competing that week, he would remain on blood thinners for life.
“I’m reminded every day of what happened,” said Beach. “I’ve used that to propel me and motivate me moving forward. Every time I show up to this tournament, it’s a reminder of where I’ve come from but also the achievement of making it here. It’s a motivation more than a hindrance.”
Championship rookie Matt Lohmeyer of Fort Worth, Texas, was alone in third at 138, while Brett McCurdy of Lake Park, Florida (68) and Stuart Deane of Arlington, Texas (68) shared fifth at 140. The field of 312 was trimmed to the low 90 scorers and ties, with 92 golfers making the cut at 5-over-par 148 heading into Tuesday’s third round.
The low 70 scorers and ties after 54 holes in the $650,000 Championship advance to Wednesday’s final round. The low 20 scorers Wednesday earn a berth in the 101st PGA Championship, May 16-19, at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.
It isn’t just competitive golf that bonds Beach and Balin; it also extends to business. When Balin took his current position at Fresh Meadow Country Club in January, Beach succeeded him at Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, and settled into his new quarters two weeks ago.
“Danny and I have played a lot of golf together and we’re good friends,” said Beach. “He’s a great player and has had a lot of success. I’ve tried to follow in his footsteps. It’ll be great for Westchester Country Club and all the support we’ve received from them. But I’m going to go out there and try and beat him.”
Balin said of his lack of preparations: “I didn’t get to go to Florida this year, because I got this new job. With this tournament being in this part of the year, I didn’t have a lot of time to get ready. I had two 18-hole rounds, hit some balls and putted a bit. That was about it. I have been doing this for a while, and I know how to prepare, what works and what doesn’t.
“I wasn’t in that much trouble today. I had 27 putts today, which was good. I just managed my game well.”
Lohmeyer is a PGA Teaching Professional at GOLFTEC at Montgomery plaza in Fort Worth, Texas, is a graduate of the University of New Mexico PGA Golf University program. His caddie is his college roommate, PGA Professional Casey Moen of Great Falls, Montana.
“I got off to a good start, going 4-under through 7, and felt very relaxed,” said Lohmeyer. “The West Course really suited my eye. The greens were soft and I felt like we were almost throwing darts."
Former Champion Ron Philo Jr. of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, the first-round leader, struggled to a 75 and was at 140. Defending Champion Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Nebraska, struggled to a 76 to land at 146.
Begun in 1968, the PGA Professional Championship is presented by Club Car and OMEGA; with supporting partners Nike, TaylorMade Golf, Titleist/FootJoy; Golf Channel and the PGA TOUR.
Notes: PGA Master Professional Jim White, 69, the manager of Fairways at Lincoln in Lincoln, Nebraska, completed his record 30th Championship appearance with a 74 and 149 total to miss the cut. What had made White’s accomplishment special is that he has had no exemptions and has qualified through his Section Championship since 1985. He is a 19-time Nebraska PGA Player of the Year and a 14-time Section Senior Player of the Year. “You have to get your game in shape to try to qualify for this Championship and I have been fortunate to do so,” said White. “I enjoy coming to this Championship. It’s great to see guys from all over the country, seeing old friend and making new friends.” Ashley Grier, a PGA Assistant Professional at Overbrook Country Club in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, turned in a 71 on the West Course and posted a 143 total to make the cut along with Joanna Coe of Baltimore (Maryland) Country Club, who had a 74-145.

Zack Wygant, Quail Creek's New General Manager, to Oversee the Club's $18.5M Renovation
(NAPLES, FL) — Zack Wygant, recently promoted to the position of General Manager of Quail Creek Country Club, is now overseeing the club’s ambitious expansion and redesign project that broke ground in late 2018 and is scheduled for completion November 1, 2019.
Wygant has served Quail Creek as Assistant General Manager for the past year and a half and has 15 years’ experience in the club business. Originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., where he began
Quail Creek Country Club’s new General Manager Zack Wygant is responsible for completing the club’s $18.5 million renovation later this year.
Working at the prestigious Sycamore Hills Golf Club at age 15, he gained a strong background in club management as the club’s Food and Beverage Director. A sommelier in the Guild of Sommeliers, Wygant is actively pursuing his Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation from the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA). Throughout his career he has been involved in virtually every aspect of club management, including conducting nine national championships.
Wygant, whose new role at Quail Creek will include managing the integrated sports center—a concept unique to Southwest Florida—is focused on several initiatives related to the club’s $18.5 million renovation project, most notably:
• To differentiate Quail Creek as the best amateur/recreational player-support club in the area for the growing retirement market, and
• To enrich the lives of the club’s members through innovative, integrated approaches to physical activity, mental stimulation and social engagement so they become 100 percent heath- and wellness-minded.
As previously reported, Quail Creek, through its redesigned clubhouse facility, will offer a new cutting-edge approach—unique in country club settings—that blends dynamic fitness training with top-level golf, tennis and pickleball instruction, all in a user-friendly, socially active environment. In this major investment, the entire golf, tennis, fitness and leisure operations will be interfaced under
Already the new design at Quail Creek Country Club is grabbing attention across the country.
The innovative renovation will allow teaching professionals a 180-degree view of the golf and tennis practice facilities.

Director of Golf Mike Dero, Head Golf Professional Jon Balyeat, and Tennis Director Jon Call will have a 180-degree viewing access of the golf practice tee and tennis courts to monitor instruction and fitness in consult with Fitness Operations Manager Teri Brodie.
As a result of the redesign and increased media exposure, the club is also experiencing a significant uptick in real estate activity. Julianne Callis, a realtor with John R. Wood Properties based in Southwest Florida, notes that the renovations to Quail Creek are creating a huge opportunity for those considering selling their homes and a big motivation for those who want to buy.
“When the renovations are complete, QCCC will be one of the hottest clubs in Naples, and now is the time to buy in its neighboring community," she says.
Quail Creek is seizing on a coming trend among country clubs, as identified by researcher Frank Vain, President of the McMahon Group, a private-club consulting firm. “Over the next decade, the average country club will look more like a sports center surrounded by a golf course,” Vain says. Or in the case of Quail Creek, two highly regarded 18-hole golf courses designed by Arthur Hills—the Quail and the Creek—which have each undergone extensive renovations over the past six years.
“We have taken a very aggressive fiscal and creative approach to position the club positively for generations to come,” says Quail Creek president Hedy Whitney. “Our mission is to enable our members to play better and longer at whatever sport or activity they choose.”

Potomac Shores Golf Club Completes Major Course Enhancements
(Dumfries, Va.) – Potomac Shores Golf Club, the award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature design in Dumfries, Va., recently completed a multi-phase course enhancement project which included re-grassing fairways and bunker renovations. Chad Goetz from Nicklaus Design and Troon’s agronomy team led the 10-month project with Southeastern Golf construction company serving as the contractor.
Phase One of the course improvement project was completed in September 2018 and focused on replacing bent grass fairways with Latitude 36 Bermudagrass. Phase Two began in mid-October and involved eliminating and renovating bunkers. The total number of bunkers decreased from 77 to 74, while the total square footage of bunkers was reduced by 40 percent, from approximately 103,000 square feet to approximately 63,000 square feet.
"It was our pleasure to return to Potomac Shores Golf Club,” said Chad Goetz, design associate, Nicklaus Design. “The project was focused on restoring all of the bunkers on the course while increasing playability and improving the daily playing conditions. In order to improve maintenance efficiency, numerous bunkers were reduced in size or eliminated. Combined with the Capillary Concrete liner system, the bunkers should weather heavy rain events better and have reduced contamination. While several bunkers were eliminated in this project, a handful of previously eliminated bunkers were re-installed to restore Jack's original design intent. Finally, several deep bunkers were shallowed out in order to make the course more enjoyable for its daily fee clientele. All of this was done while preserving Jack's original design intent and strategies."
Potomac Shores Golf Club opened for daily-fee play in May of 2014. Upon opening in 2014, the facility was named one of the “Best New Courses” in the U.S. by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine and is currently ranked among the “Top Courses You Can Play” in Virginia by GolfWeek magazine.
“Our goal from the onset was to improve the playability of the golf course allowing golfers of all skill levels to enjoy themselves. I am happy to say that we achieved our objective,” said Todd Van Meer, PGA, director of club operations, Potomac Shores Golf Club. “With the new sand and bunker improvements, the course is not only more beautiful but the overall playability has improved.”
Located just 30 minutes south of Washington, D.C., Potomac Shores Golf Club is the centerpiece of the Potomac Shores community being developed by SunCal, one of the largest real estate development companies in the U.S. that specializes in large-scale, mixed-use master-planned communities. Potomac Shores covers 1,920 acres and features nearly two miles of shoreline, 1,000 acres of preserved hardwood forests and streams and traditional Virginia Tidewater architectural designs. This transit-oriented development is planned for a mixed-use town center, a new VRE commuter rail station and a waterfront village. Its master plan also includes two public schools, multiple sports fields, 10 miles of trails and over 3,800 residences. The community offers the 13,000 square-foot Shores Club, a private recreation and fitness complex, and has sold over 900 new homes. McKibbin Rallies to Win 9th Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club
(GRANITEVILLE, S.C.) – Northern Ireland’s Tom McKibbin, 16, of Newtownabbey captured wins both on and off the course in the 9th Junior Invitational at Sage Valley Golf Club.
McKibbin shot a 1-under 71 in his final round, recovering nicely from yesterday’s 3-over 75 in brutally windy conditions that took a toll on the field. His first round 64 ultimately set him up for success, allowing him to finish 6-under at 210 for the tournament and giving him a one-stroke edge over Maxwell Moldovan of Uniontown, Ohio.
McKibbin’s first appearance in the Junior Invitational was certainly one for the books. Not only did he secure the tournament’s Golden Jacket, but he was also awarded Sage Valley’s Paul S. Simon Character Award for his work with the Northern Irish Children’s Hospice at the opening ceremony earlier in the week. He also participated in a clinic with fellow Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy.
“Just to be here is special, and to get the Paul Simon Award before the tournament started was a great honor,” McKibbin said. “And obviously to win today was unbelievable. I couldn’t ask for anything better."
Heading into the final round, 36-hole leader Nicholas Dunlap of Greer, South Carolina, sat at 7-under. McKibbin and Moldovan started the morning at 5-under and 4-under, respectively. Both players went toe-to-toe on the front nine shooting even par, and the back nine became the difference-maker as Dunlap and others fell back in the field.
Following a bogey on Hole No. 12, McKibbin called his birdie on Hole No. 13 to tie Moldovan at 6-under his biggest moment. McKibbin would regain the outright lead with an impressive birdie on Hole No. 15, thanks in part to a powerful drive that cut off the dogleg, carried the bunker and left him 50 yards ahead of his competitor. He was able to get up and down for birdie on the par five to capture a lead he would not relinquish.
Both McKibbin and Moldovan made bogies on the formidable Hole 17, where McKibbin had made a triple bogey on the previous day. He became the second player in three years to make a triple bogey on Hole No. 17 on Friday, fall out the lead and come back to win the tournament.
After both made par on the final hole, Moldovan settled for second at one shot behind McKibbin with a combined 5-under 211. The 17-year-old is onto the next event as he heads to the U.S. Open Qualifier at Beechmont Country Club May 7, but his experience at Sage Valley Golf Club was one to remember.
“I can’t even explain how incredible it was,” Moldovan said. “The course is second-to-none from what I’ve played. The people here, the overall atmosphere… it’s incredible.”
Ricky Castillo (69-70-73–212) of Yorba Linda, California, finished in third at 4-under in the tournament. England’s Joseph Pagdin (69-75-69–213), Australia’s Karl Vilips (70-69-74–213) and South Carolina’s Nicholas Dunlap (68-69-76–213) finished tied for fourth.
Second round leader Dunlap went into the back nine of the final round tied for the lead with McKibbin, but four bogeys and one birdie on the back nine dropped him to 3-under.
“Yesterday I played really solid. I hit 10 fairways, and today I hit five,” said Dunlap. “But to play good or bad, it’s just great to be here.”
As for what’s next for him, fifteen-year-old Dunlap’s answer helps put into perspective that these elite-level competitors have a lot of golf – and a lot of life – left.
“I go back to school Monday,” he said.
Eligibility for the 54-hole stroke-play Junior Invitational is rigorous, with 17 automatic qualifiers produced from the 2018 Junior Invitational Champion, 2018 Boys Junior PGA Champion, and furthest advancing junior in the 2018 U.S. Amateur, among others. Remaining slots are filled based upon year-to-date rankings.

PGA Professional Championship Marks New Date on the Calendar with Visit to Historic Belfair
(BLUFFTON, S.C.) – The PGA Professional Championship celebrates its first niche on the spring golf calendar by visiting historic Belfair of Bluffton, South Carolina, one of the Southeast’s premier golf destinations. The largest all-professional national championship in the game is Sunday, April 28 through Wednesday, May 1.
The 52nd edition of the PGA Professional Championship presented by Cadillac, Club Car and OMEGA features a 312-player field representing 45 states and all 41 PGA Sections.
Defending Champion Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Nebraska, is one of 17 past Champions in the field competing for a total purse of $550,000. In 2018, Vermeer, the PGA Director of Instruction at Happy Hollow Club in Omaha, became the first Nebraska PGA Member to capture the national championship and a PGA Professional Player of the Year award.
The host Carolinas PGA Section will have 12 representatives in a field that also includes the largest women PGA contingent: Sherry Andonian of La Quinta, California; Alexandra Braga of Denver, Colorado; reigning PGA Women’s Stroke Play Champion Joanna Coe of Lutherville-Timonium, Maryland; and Ashley Grier of Hagerstown, Pennsylvania.
“We are excited to take the PGA Professional Championship to Belfair, one of the true golfing gems in the country, and make it our first national championship of the spring,” said PGA President Suzy Whaley. “It’s a week for the best playing members of our Association to showcase their talents through coverage on Golf Channel and be recognized for being instrumental at their respective facilities as executive managers, golf course operators, teachers and coaches.”
James Swift, PGA Director of Golf at Belfair, said his staff and 650 volunteers are ready to host their first national championship. Belfair follows the Ocean Course of Kiawah Island (2005) and The Dunes Club of Myrtle Beach (2014) as South Carolina hosts sites.
“It’s an exciting time at Belfair and an honor to host 312 of the best playing PGA Professionals,” said Swift. “We hope that their time here is a pleasant one, but also that they enjoy all of the facilities we offer. We anticipate a great week.”
Belfair, a former plantation, cattle ranch and turkey farm dating to 1811, was transformed into a world-class golf destination in the 1990s. The Championship will be contested on two Tom Fazio-designed courses – the West and the East. There will be a 36-hole cut Monday to the low 90 scorers and ties, and a 54-hole cut Tuesday to the low 70 scorers and ties.
The low 20 scorers after Wednesday’s final round earn a berth in the 101st PGA Championship at Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York.
The West Course, ranked among Golfweek’s Top 100 Private Residential Golf Courses, will host the final two rounds. Golf Channel provides coverage all four rounds.

Record 8th Nicklaus Design Course Underway in Vietnam
BRG Chairman Nga Meets with Nicklaus Executive Chairman Howard Milstein
(RELEASE) — As part of a 10 golf course Strategic Cooperation Agreement, Nicklaus Design and BRG Group recently had a signing ceremony announcing its newest project in Quang Nam and an additional nine holes at Legend Hill in Hanoi. Nicklaus Executive Chairman Howard Milstein and BRG Group Chairman Nga recently met in Washington, DC, to review the state of current projects, discuss a long term plan for growth and to review additional business synergies between BRG, Nicklaus and Milstein’s 8AM Golf properties. BRG is a harmonious match with leading golf course design firm, Nicklaus Design, with 423 golf courses in 45 countries and 40 U.S. states. Like Milstein's business portfolio including Emigrant Bank, Chairman Nga also owns one of Vietnam’s largest banks, SeABank, in addition to hotels, car dealerships, food services and commercial centers.
“Chairman Nga is clearly one of the most successful business leaders and entrepreneurs in the entire country,” commented Milstein. “She has an astute vision for creating a positive economic and environmental impact on Vietnam through golf and her resorts. We are proud to be her partner.”
The BRG Group/Nicklaus Companies’ initiative to develop such an expansive collection of golf courses across the country reflects the enthusiastic demand for the game of golf in Vietnam. Jack Nicklaus II and Nicklaus Designer Sean Quinn toured sites late last year in addition to meeting with Chairman Nga to review project plans. Nicklaus Companies President of Asia-Pacific Paul Stringer, who has enjoyed a long standing relationship with Chairman Nga, visited Vietnam last month to discuss future plans with the BRG Group and Chairman Nga.
“We see Vietnam as one of the top emerging golf markets in the world, and we have aggressively taken the lead in developing the game across the country in partnership with BRG,” commented Stringer. “Vietnam’s mission to expand its tourism industry parallels Nga’s approach to bolster economic growth with the development of resorts, various residential communities, and golf courses.”
Savvy golf course owners seek Nicklaus Design for its ability to craft both playable and championship-caliber layouts while incorporating unique natural elements and elevating them through their robust design process and sustainability. Environmental issues frequently confound other designers across the globe, something Nicklaus Design has been able to turn into a positive.
Chairman Nga reinforced this, saying, “With everything we do, we apply environmentally friendly principles to preserve the natural ecosystems both inside and outside of our golf courses.” Nicklaus Designers Sean Quinn and Jim Wagner currently support the BRG projects in Vietnam drafting routing plans and creating strategy for the new golf being developed with BRG.
The future is bright for BRG and Nicklaus Design in Vietnam. “Vietnam has a tremendous potential for golf tourism supported by good year-round weather and our friendly, service-oriented people,” said Chairman Nga. The partners are excited to continue their relationship in the golf course development segment as well as other joint business opportunities.

Industry Leaders to Bring Story of Golf’s Impact to Congressional Members During National Golf Day
Washington Posts’ Eugene Robinson to Provide Keynote Speech to Industry Leaders, Topgolf to Open Doors with Free Lessons at 50 Locations
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – WE ARE GOLF – a coalition of the game’s leading associations and industry partners – will join forces Wednesday, May 1 to host the 12th annual National Golf Day on Capitol Hill. More than 300 industry leaders will meet with Congressional members to discuss golf’s economic, charitable, environmental, fitness and societal benefits.
“National Golf Day provides an organized platform for the industry to share first-hand data and personal stories about the $84 billion industry that impacts nearly two million jobs and has a positive impact on communities across the United States,” said Greg McLaughlin, CEO of World Golf Foundation.
Throughout National Golf Day, data-driven metrics will reveal the health of the sport – from traditional participation to interest and off-course participation to the ways in which it continues to grow and evolve, including key metrics from the recent 2019 Golf Industry Report.
On Tuesday, April 30, golf industry representatives will come together for 17 community service projects at various locations on the National Mall. The community service project is organized by Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. For more information on the Community Service Project, click here.
Later that afternoon, Eugene Robinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Washington Post and MSNBC Political Analyst, will discuss the political climate in D.C. with golf industry leaders as they prepare for visits on Capitol Hill the following day.
“For 12 years the golf industry has gathered in Washington, D.C. to share the powerful impact that our sport has on the United States,” says Jay Karen, CEO of the National Golf Course Owners Association and Chairman of the WE ARE GOLF Board. “Lawmakers hear firsthand from their constituents about the myriad benefits golf provides society and this helps inform their future decisions that could affect our sport.”
In partnership with WE ARE GOLF, global sports entertainment leader Topgolf® announced 50 U.S. venues will offer complimentary group golf instruction classes next Wednesday, May 1 to celebrate National Golf Day. Guests who register for a complimentary Topgolf Coach class will receive instruction from a PGA-certified golf professional along with 50% off their next group class. Last year, Topgolf taught more than 4,300 five-minute lessons on National Golf Day.
In 2018, Canada held its inaugural National Golf Day, though this year marks the first time its industry associations will align with the same date as the U.S. golf industry. The respective organizations will create a unified front that increases awareness and overall participation in North America, including simultaneous legislative visits in Ottawa and Washington, D.C. Tom Fazio, Dormie Network ready to shine on Web.com Tour
(RELEASE) — With more than 200 golf courses around the world bearing his name, Tom Fazio has long been counted as one of the game’s most celebrated architects.
No living designer has more courses ranked among America's best. Numerous major championships on each of the professional tours have been played on golf courses Fazio designed or renovated. In addition, Fazio is Augusta National’s consulting architect, having overseen much of the course work since the 1990s.
Starting with the inaugural Dormie Network Classic at Briggs Ranch Golf Club this weekend in San Antonio, Tex., Fazio-designed courses will be celebrated on the Web.com Tour. The event will field 156 players competing for a $550,000 purse.
During Labor Day weekend, the Web.com Tour concludes its season at Victoria National Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind., which will once again serve as host venue for the newly named Web.com Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance.
Briggs Ranch and Victoria National are both Fazio designs.
Both are also part of Dormie Network.
“Sometimes I’ll walk by a television in a locker room somewhere, and I see a golf course that looks familiar — and it’s one I designed,” Fazio said. “I guess when you’ve been around as long as I have and done as many golf courses, those kind of things happen. It’s wonderful for me to see Briggs Ranch and Victoria National — great stories, great involvements, great memories — wonderful, fabulous golf courses. Both those golf courses were a dream for us.”
Along with Briggs Ranch and Victoria National, the Nebraska-based Dormie Network includes Dormie Club (Pinehurst, NC), Ballyhack Golf Club (Roanoke, Va.), ArborLinks (Nebraska City, Neb.) and Hidden Creek Golf Club (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.).
Offering regional, national and corporate memberships, the network's full-service accommodations, premium amenities and renowned courses provide a combination of best-in-class golf with an intimate and casual retreat experience ideal for business or leisure.
“A program like Dormie Network, where they take existing facilities and have new young people coming in and energizing things, it’s just fabulous,” Fazio said. “Things move on and you get new ownership, which is great. You get new blood, new energy; you get new young people and excitement.”
Dormie Network has invested millions in capital improvement projects, currently at various stages of planning, execution, and completion at every club.
At Briggs Ranch — where Fazio’s design opened in 2001 and has been ranked among the top 20 layouts in Texas — Dormie Network is constructing premium, on-site lodging in the form of casitas, as well as a state-of-the-art TrackMan performance center that will be ideal for corporate gatherings and client entertainment.
“The focus at Briggs Ranch was really about creating a great golf experience, creating great conditions for golf and creating a great environment that people would enjoy,” said Fazio. “This was a group of passionate people who really loved the game and were committed to creating a top-notch facility in a growing area. You had some movers and shakers who really committed to doing the best golf that could be done. That’s what got my attention and made me excited to be involved. These people had the dream of creating something special.”
At Victoria National, which Fazio designed in 1998, Dormie Network is adding cottages that will double the club’s current accommodations.
“I think the quality of these two golf courses will be shown,” said Fazio. “When players the caliber of the Web.com Tour come to Briggs Ranch and Victoria National and see the golf courses — I run into these really good players who are moving on the way up, and they remind me of the quality and character of those golf courses. It’s fun to sit and listen to good players talk about them.”

Breakthrough Golf Technology Has Three Top 10 Finishes on Tour
(Dallas, TX) — Breakthrough Golf Technology announces that its Stability putter shaft helped capture three Top 10 tour finishes this past weekend.
On the PGA Tour, one of the top pros used it and bested most of the field at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, S.C, finishing in 10th place. And at the PGA Tour Champions event at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Ga., two players - finishing second and 10th, respectively - trusted their putters to the Stability shaft.
"These top 10 finishes are no surprise," says Breakthrough CEO and Founder Barney Adams. "More tour pros continue to realize how our Stability putter shaft can make a huge difference in their game. We fully expect to see more and more usage by the world's best players."
For 50 years, the putter shaft has not changed. It was a simple steel pipe. But over the years, head designs for putters evolved and have gotten dramatically heavier. This has resulted in shafts that are not stable or strong enough to keep these heavier, advanced putter heads from oscillating. The Stability putter shaft delivers the face more squarely at impact, resulting in improved accuracy, solid feel, a lower launch for a predictable roll, and better distance control.

Study: To Avoid Lower Back Issues, Golfers Should Improve Flexibility, Muscle Strength
“Back muscle endurance is especially important for golfers with lower back pain,” said Nathan Edwards, a graduate student in Ball State Biomechanics Lab. “Working with a fitness professional can help you increase your strength and lower your risk of further injuring your back.”
The Kokomo native spent the last year analyzing lower back pain for his study, “Quantifying Biomechanical Risk Factors for Low Back Pain in Amateur Golfers.” His research investigated the connection between the hips, lower back, and upper back for golfers experiencing lower back pain. The project was one of nine winners at Ball State’s Student Symposium this month.
Edwards notes there are several factors that can contribute to lower back pain in golfers, including: inadequate warm-ups before playing, limited hip flexibility, and compromising trunk movement during the swing.
His research found that club-head speed largely impacts a golfer’s success. To maximize club-head speed, golfers should use a swing form with proximal-to-distal sequencing pattern.
Edwards compared proximal-to-distal sequencing to the cracking of a bullwhip, with speed increasing and energy transferring through the length of the whip.
“In the golf swing, the golfer’s body starts accelerating at the legs,” Edwards said. “Then speed increases in this order: hips, lower back, upper back, and shoulders, followed by the arms, forearms, hands, and finally the club head as it impacts the golf ball. For golfers, the swing is the whip, and we want the ‘snap’ to occur in the club head at impact.”
Edwards said a proximal-to-distal sequencing pattern also helps golfers safely transfer speed through the body and into the club head. In the golf swing, forces up to eight times a golfer’s body weight are produced, helping to generate the highest club-head speed possible at impact.
These forces can adversely affect the portions of the body where a proximal-to-distal sequence is not followed, he said.
“I found that golfers with lower back pain did not use a proximal-to-distal sequencing pattern for their hips, lower back, and upper back,” Edwards noted. “Instead, they moved their hips and lower back at the same time followed by their upper back. The golfers with lower back pain also relied more on muscle strength rather than efficient golf swing technique (i.e. proximal-to-distal sequencing) to increase hip, lower back, and upper back rotational speed. Specifically, they used their back muscles more during the golf swing.”
The lack of motion and the increased back muscle activity may be factors in the development of pain by increasing the amount of force on the lower back. However, these characteristics could also be a way that golfers protect their lower backs by limiting the amount of movement near painful areas, he said.
World’s Best Set To Compete in 74th U.S. Women’s Open Championship
13 champions to take on Country Club of Charleston May 30-June 2
(LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.) – Thirteen past champions and 47 of the top 50 players in the world are among those entered in the 74th U.S. Women’s Open Championship, which will be conducted by the United States Golf Association from May 30-June 2, 2019, at the Country Club of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Championship entries closed at 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, April 17.
“We are excited to see such a strong group of entrants from around the world for the 74th U.S. Women’s Open Championship,” said Shannon Rouillard, senior director, Championships for the USGA. “We can’t wait to see the game’s best take on this fantastic Seth Raynor-designed golf course, which we know will provide the ultimate test of golf and thrill fans from around the world.”
This marks the sixth consecutive year the U.S. Women’s Open has received more than 1,500 entries, with the USGA accepting 1,552 entries for this year’s championship. The 2015 championship at Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club holds the entry record with 1,873. The USGA accepted entries from golfers in 47 states, 32 entrants from South Carolina among them, and a total of 62 countries.
To be eligible for the U.S. Women’s Open, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 2.4, or be a professional. Sectional qualifying will be conducted over 36 holes between April 22-May 8. Qualifying will be held at 21 sites in the United States, as well as four international sites: one each in England, Japan, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Korea.
Ariya Jutanugarn, of Thailand, who won the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala., is one of the 13 fully exempt U.S. Women’s Open champions. Jutanugarn is joined by Sung Hyun Park (2017), Brittany Lang (2016), In Gee Chun (2015), Michelle Wie (2014), Inbee Park (2013, 2008), Na Yeon Choi (2012), So Yeon Ryu (2011), Paula Creamer (2010), Eun-Hee Ji (2009), Cristie Kerr (2007), Karrie Webb (2001, 2000) and Laura Davies (1987), who earned an exemption based on her victory in the inaugural U.S. Senior Women’s Open last July.
Two-time U.S. Women’s Open champion Karrie Webb, of Australia, has accepted a special exemption into the championship. Webb, 44, won the 2000 U.S. Women’s Open at The Merit Club in Gurnee, Ill., defeating Kerr and Meg Mallon by five strokes. In 2001, Webb defeated Se Ri Pak by eight strokes at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C., to become the 12th player to win multiple U.S. Women’s Opens. Webb’s 23 consecutive Women’s Opens entering this year is the longest active streak. Webb received a special exemption into the championship last year, when she missed the cut at Shoal Creek. She is a 41-time winner on the LPGA Tour and 15-time winner on the Ladies European Tour.
Brittany Lincicome, currently No. 37 in the Rolex Women's World Golf Rankings, and Sarah Jane Smith, who tied for fifth in last year’s championship at Shoal Creek, have chosen to take advantage of the U.S. Women’s Open’s family-friendly Maternity Extension Opportunity, and will defer their exemptions until the 2020 championship at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.
This will be the second USGA championship conducted at the Country Club of Charleston. In 2013, Emma Talley defeated Yueer Cindy Feng, 1 up, to win the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship. Talley is among the 100 players who are currently fully exempt into the championship, as are Gerina Mendoza and Suzann Pettersen, who chose to defer their 2018 exemptions to 2019, per the maternity opportunity.
The championship’s youngest entrant is 11-year-old Seojin Park, of the Republic of Korea. She will attempt to qualify at the sectional qualifying site in Incheon, Korea, on April 25. Avery Zweig, 12, of McKinney, Texas, will try to qualify in Maple Grove, Minn., on May 7. Laura Baugh, 63, is the championship's oldest entrant. She will attempt to qualify in Bradenton, Fla., on May 6.
Celine Herbin, a 36-year-old professional from France, was the first to apply when entries opened on Feb. 20. The final entry came from Sana Tufail, a 22-year-old amateur from England, who filed three minutes before the 5 p.m. EDT deadline on April 17.
Players still have several opportunities to gain a full exemption into the U.S. Women’s Open. The winner of any LPGA co-sponsored event prior to the start of the U.S. Women’s Open, including this weekend’s Lotte Championship in Oahu, Hawaii, will earn an exemption into the championship field. Additionally, any player in the top 50 point leaders and ties from the Rolex Rankings as of May 27 who is not already exempt will be added to the field.

Bee + Hive Launches a Booking Platform for Sustainable Experiences
(NEW YORK, NY) — Bee + Hive, a not-for-profit association that unites hotels and partners committed to sustainable tourism experiences, has announced that it will launch a booking platform in June of 2019. It will be an innovative booking engine with a search focused on sustainable experiences.
The service will give travelers the ability to plan a vacation based on sustainable experiences, and the chance to support global sustainable tourism. Booking revenues generated by users of the site will be reinvested in furthering the organization’s mission.
“People are interested in traveling responsibly, but the process of identifying and selecting genuine sustainable options is complicated,” explains Bee + Hive Founder, Bruno Correa. “In addition, there is growing interest in making travel choices based on experiences that unique and transformative. Our booking engine will help do both.”
Travelers who visit the website will be given the option to search for genuine sustainable experiences to start planning their trip. For example, a traveler who wants to swim with sharks will search for the experience and be offered location and hotel options accordingly. The site confirms availability on the selected dates before inviting the user to reserve.
By booking with Bee + Hive, travelers will join the global movement to grow sustainable tourism both by supporting a hotel or destination that is committed to sustainability and by knowing that Bee + Hive will continue to help create and offer more unique experiences in a sustainable way.
According to a recent study conducted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), on average, for every 100 dollars spent by a tourist on a holiday in a developing country, only 5 dollars remain in the host community.
“This figure represents the potential benefit tourism can have on local communities if we turn around the role of the hotel within this social environment,” says Correa. “A responsible hotel cares about developing the local eco-system and its’ community. And the best way to do this is by offering authentic activities that reflect the destination. As a not-for-profit, all of Bee+Hive’s revenues will be reinvested on promotional efforts for legitimate and inspiring sustainable hotels and experiences, in a virtuous circle where more hotels join our movement."
Through showcasing these inspiring experiences, Bee + Hive aims to galvanize travelers beyond their trip, so they can spread awareness of sustainable travel after returning home. Founded by Correa, Bee + Hive’s origins lie in his first-hand knowledge developing sustainable experiences.
Bee + Hive only promotes hotels and experiences that give back to the local environment. The association works closely with its members to develop unique travel experiences with sustainability at their core, including preserving and re-habilitating wildlife and ecology, ensuring viable socio-economic projects for the local community and protecting cultural expression.
