Trevor Simsby takes home first place prize of $28,000
(Mesquite, Nev.) – The Nevada Open tournament in Mesquite, Nev. came to a rousing end yesterday with a sudden death playoff to determine the winner. Trevor Simsby of Carlsbad, Calif. and Riley Arp of Scottsdale, Ariz. were tied at -16 before entering sudden death. With a short par putt on the second playoff hole, Simsby took the championship title and first place prize of $28,000 for the 2017 Nevada Open, hosted by Mesquite Gaming, owner of CasaBlanca Resort and Virgin River Hotel.
“This week we saw incredible talent over the three-day tournament and it was certainly an exciting finish,” said Christian Adderson, tournament director for Mesquite Gaming. “We had amazing weather, large crowds and great golf here in Mesquite and we’re already looking forward to next year.”
The Nevada Open ran from Tuesday, Nov. 7 through Thursday, Nov. 9. The 54-hole event allowed competitors to play one round on each of the scenic and award-winning courses – CasaBlanca Golf Club and Palms Golf Club. This year, three amateur golfers made the cut with the overall low amateur, Torey Edwards of Long Beach, Calif., finishing with a -7 for the tournament.
Overall, the event featured a $140,000 prize purse and additional prizes were awarded for the pro-am and amateur competitions. The pro-am, held on Monday, Nov. 6, benefitted Mesquite Junior Golf and featured community and business leaders from southern Nevada and southern Utah paired with golf pros in a shamble format.
